Your mileage may vary, but... I picked up both the Google Home and the Amazon Echo because I wanted to see which one was best. Oddly, Amazon Echo pairs better with my work accounts (GSuite/Google Apps for Biz) because Google Home doesn't do that yet. For home automation, Echo can't be beat. For playing podcasts, Echo is on top of it. For answering questions, Google Home allows me to get to my answer a lot faster with better sources. In terms of audio quality, Echo is top dog. Can it hear you from across the room? Yeah, in fact - mine can hear me from outside my office 3 rooms away.
Has it changed my routines? Yep. I love the Flash Briefing. The skills, for now, are mostly useless or "add-ons" to the Flash Briefing. It can read your audio books and Kindle books (and they do a freebie monthly) - but as I listen at 3x speed to most of my audio books, it's not the most helpful thing ever (because there's no speed control yet).
Is it the Computer from the Enterprise? Not yet. It can't perform complex tasks like, "Alexa, find me a 4 or 5-star Chinese Restaurant nearby and make a reservation", cannot call out (hey Skype, where are you?), and cannot send text messages or write emails.
There's some connecting the dots that will have to happen for this to be life-changing, but for now, it's pretty good.

Nest Protect reliably detects and alerts you to the presence of smoke or carbon monoxide in your home. The alarm speaks to you in a calm, clear, human voice, telling you the location of the danger. It also provides smartphone alerts and battery status updates to help protect your home. This hardwired version is suitable for homes with existing hardwired smoke or CO detectors.

Nest's infrastructure is pretty strong - from Security Cams to Thermostats to Fire Alarms. I can test all my alarms from my phone, check they're functioning well, get alerted when there's an issue and I'm away from home, I can see the status of all the sensors any time.

Perfect Smart Home Device, Except For One Thing

Google Home does not currently (as of the time I'm writing this post) work with Google Apps for Business AKA GSuite accounts, cutting out a major portion of the useful functionality. However, in practice - Google Home, especially if you have kids or are otherwise exceedingly curious, is a much better choice for an AI that can actively answer your questions well and completely - including playing animal noises when you say, "What sound does a Cow make?"
As more metadata is mined from the world, Google seems to be in the best position to utilize it.

Fewer Cords, But Obnoxious To Connect After Dark
on August 26, 2016
Posted by: SlamminTunes
from Fort Collins, CO
The Belkin Apple Watch Dock is sturdy, concise, and seems to keep everything snugly connected and charging.
There are two big downsides - first: the Apple Watch dock isn't designed to allow the watch to easily be docked in "nightstand mode" (where it turns into a clock on its side). It's kind of possible, but the sport bands are curly and push the watch away from the charging station. You can kinda finagle it, but mine ended up only getting a 3/4ths charge and disconnected sometime in the night (I had a drained watch by the end of the day and that never happens). Not a major issue to have nightstand mode when your phone is right there, though - the phone is just significantly brighter and more prone to waking up whoever else is in the room with you.
Second: if you're a night owl and go to bed after your significant other and are fumbling around in the dark, it's near impossible to connect your phone to the dock because the lightning connector does not stay in place and wiggles when a connection is attempted. I seriously fumbled with this for 10 minutes for two nights in a row before giving up, disconnecting the dock from its wall cord, going out to where I could see what I was doing without disturbing my wife, connecting it, and going back to bed. Defeats the purpose, and for this reason, I would not recommend this product. Totally aggravating.
The lightning connector does have a height adjustor which is useful for docking with various cases attached. The dock itself is sturdy and hefty, so it's not liable to go flying off your nightstand until you get so frustrated at your inability to plug in your phone that you decide to fling it yourself.

Color laser printers are something of a modern miracle - they let you print color business documents without going to a print shop. For small runs, it's amazing and cost-effective.
The AirPrint functionality is fantastic. Brother printers are super easy to set up and the whole thing was up and running in under 30 minutes.

Does Some Things I Wish My MacBook Did
on July 10, 2016
Posted by: SlamminTunes
from Fort Collins, CO
Full disclosure: I'm thoroughly a Mac guy, but this is a computer I'd easily recommend to friends.
Let's start with the body of the computer: it's a good looking computer with decent heft, but not overly heavy at 4lbs.
The screen is much lighter than the keyboard/base of the laptop, meaning that when you switch to tablet mode or display mode, it's pretty unbalanced (it made me nervous enough to not want to use that feature).
Being used to iPads, I'm not used to the feel of a keyboard and so much bulk in tablet mode, either - and holding a 15" laptop for this purpose is awkward at best. The keyboard doesn't retract and the touchpad is right where your hand wants to hold the thing. It doesn't "latch" into place as a tablet, so I think they're expecting you to have this on a flat surface while using as a tablet. How this doesn't cause a little concern with the spinning 5400 rpm hard drive at the same time is beyond me. Display mode is kinda weird... "for use when sharing the screen with others" because they keyboard doesn't retract in this mode either like some of the chromebooks you might have seen with this feature. Windows seems to know that the laptop has changed configuration and adapts the user interface.
The location of the speakers makes display mode pretty good for watching movies and the audio on the laptop is fantastic. Easily loud enough to fill a whole room and do a decent job as a dormroom or apartment netflix streamer.
The screen itself is fantastic; the touch interface is accurate, without lag, and sensitive - most apps are well-suited for tapping and web browsing was primarily where I saw the most benefit. Editing email was also a bit faster. The screen is beautiful and there's not much bevel. I wish my MacBook screen was this good (and touch sensitive).
The keyboard and keypad are great; the touchpad is good but I ended up having some issues because of how I wanted to rest my hands on the computer. The feel of the keys is pretty satisfying for a laptop and backlit keys are a nice touch.
The number of USB ports (and inclusion of a USB-C port and SD card) make this computer a viable contender for your primary computing platform. A minor annoyance when using the right-side port is the power button being located smack dab where you'd need to place your finger for balance to pry a USB drive out.
I haven't had the computer for very long but I sense the charging cable might be an issue; it's not very thick or particularly lengthy and has multiple points of attachment across the length of the cord (the transformer box is at most 36" from the computer attachment); I'll probably pick up a second. I didn't notice much issue with battery life but I run almost all my electronics plugged in regularly.
The WiFi is blazing fast and stays connected well... the moments I did have some latency were due mostly to Windows annoyances more than anything else. The computer attempts to load the usual bloatware when you first set it up; funny how those things don't really change.
Windows 10 is pretty sweet (my last Windows experience was Vista). Cortana is interesting; I suspect if I had more of my technology base integrated into Windows (my phone, tablets, etc) I'd have a better basis for comparison.
My one lingering complaint about this laptop is the harddrive. 1TB is great, but on a laptop which will be getting jolted from time to time (especially in tablet mode!), I really want to see a solid state drive.
All in all, a solid computer for the price.

Not an iPad Killer; Good Entry-Level Tablet
on May 20, 2016
Posted by: SlamminTunes
from Fort Collins, CO
Full disclosure: I’m a heavy Apple user. I carry an iPhone 6S+ and use an iPad Pro 9.7” daily to do my work. When I need a desktop, I use a MacBook Pro.
Because I’m my family’s “tech support” guy, I always have to keep up with other technology anyway. Acer’s line of tablets seems directed squarely at the "cheaper" iPad competitor slot. For my money, I’d just as soon snag the iPad Mini 4 or Retina Mini for the weight, power, form factor, and battery life. But for an entry-level tablet, Acer’s Iconia One 8” tablet isn’t bad.
The Acer Iconia One 8” tablet is similar in size, weight, and shape to a Kindle Fire. It’s not quite as thick and doesn’t have the same rubbery bumpers. The device is thicker and heavier than an iPad Mini and feels cheaper and more fragile; the plastic coating in particular cracks and creaks as you turn the device around in your hands.
The outside shell is made of plastic; the glass screen extends end to end and connects directly to the plastic case itself. The case doesn’t match the color of the case on the top of the box (which is blue) although you’d probably want to put this in a case to protect it anyway. Turning the device from portrait to landscape mode in both hands, you end up smudging the back camera. There’s one speaker on the lower right corner of the back of the case (as you’re looking at it), which also means your hand will be partially obscuring the speaker when holding it in landscape mode.
Oddly enough after starting the tablet up, after about 5 minutes of use, there was definitely a section of the back panel that was warm to the touch (probably processor or graphics chip). The expandable memory is nice, but considering you could probably keep everything in the cloud anyway, it’s not a huge boon, either.
Speaking of the speaker, it’s not bad; it’s not going to be your primary sound system and you have to max out the tablet for it to even be loud enough with even a small amount of noise. A bluetooth speaker would definitely be required to fill anything larger than a dorm room. I’m not sure if it’s a common thing with Android devices, but when switching from landscape to portrait, the volume button’s volume up and volume down switched. The highlights screen (the “today” or wake-up screen is fine but that screen alone is listed in 24-hour format when everything else (and even the settings page) indicates 12-hour time format.
Running Chrome to do some simple web browsing, the tablet easily got overwhelmed and froze up from time to time. I’m not sure if background processes were happening at the same time, but issues were intermittent. This was especially true on sites like YouTube and Vimeo when ads seemed to derail the process pretty easily.
The camera is about what you’d expect on a $99 tablet; it’s not awesome but it’s not hideous. The 5mp back camera is nothing fancy, but it will get the job done. The 3mp front camera is not good enough to cut it for Skype unless you’re happy looking like an 80’s Bond Villain speaking from your secret hideaway.
Surprisingly good: the voice recognition and transcription. OK Google was able to dictate emails and search very well - I haven’t yet experienced a typo; Siri has gone off the rails at least 3 times today, so in that aspect, something between the software and the mic is doing very nicely.
Unboxing wasn’t nearly as pleasant as unboxing an iPad Mini; the device is contained within a protective baggy, secured in cardboard with most of the components housed underneath in their own little sections. The charging cord is RIDICULOUSLY SHORT and the power adapter pretty bulky. You’d better have a dedicated outlet on your counter to charge this thing with, otherwise you’ll be picking it up off the floor every 2 days or so.
The battery life isn’t awesome; I’m guessing again there’s some bloatware eating the battery, but having freshly charged it and not touched it, it was down to about 70% after 12-15 hours of idle.
The setup of the device was pretty standard, with Acer’s own proprietary software adding a few extra steps to setup. I’m sure Android power users are rolling their eyes about bloatware and all that, but the people I usually help aren’t power users, either. Bloatware or no, whatever the defaults are is what will be installed.
The first update also seemed to load up on extra software; I wasn’t super pleased by all the extra junk that was installed by default (Chinese and Japanese character recognition keyboards, after geolocating me in Colorado and without a prompt? Come on.)
Anyway, all in all, it’s a decent entry-level tablet if all you want to do is check email and surf the web. Google apps are, as usual, pretty solid on it (i.e.: you could probably write your term paper on this with Google Apps if you wanted to). I imagine with an expert helping you, this could be a decent college or small business tablet.

I actually like writing on the Smart Keyboard better than most laptops I've used. Far and above better than the Logitech Create - the only thing it's missing is a home shortcut button AND a shortcut for Siri dictation. Other than that, it's pretty perfect. The keys are nicely balanced and the magnets are strong enough to keep the whole thing very stable.

Be Prepared To Reinstall Windows After 2 Hours

Bought this for a friend whose older Dell of similar specs was no longer functioning well after 5 years.
After getting all the software and printers/office stuff set up, 2 hours after starting it up for the first time, froze on reboot (every time). Couldn't save it and had to reinstall Windows... 3.5 hours later, I could re-do the setup process.
Repeated everything I did the first time, identically, after reinstalling Windows and it worked just fine.
After 7 hours of total set-up time, my friend had their computer back. Gross experience and would not buy again.

Does this device do more than play music on command?

Yeah, it can tell you about the weather, pull up the latest news from various sources (that you select), turn on and off the lights in your house and connect with many smart home devices (locks, garage door openers, and anything you can get to with IFTTT). It can play audio books, read your Kindle books, buy things from Amazon, etc. It can tell you what's on your calendar, it can set reminders, timers, shopping lists, etc.

It's pretty useful all in all.

Can you program echo to speak in desired voice...........eg, could it speak in the voice of the computer HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey? Thank you.

Not at this time. I'm sure there will be (with proper licensing) a Skill for that in the future, though.

No, it doesn't scan or make copies. However - if you have a smartphone, you can easily use the TurboScan app and scan the document in color, and then (if you have an iPhone) AirPlay it back out to the printer easy peasy.

For gaming and schooling, should I get the MSI apache pro 003 or the Macbookpro MGX72LL/A?

I love that the MSI GE60 apache pro 003 has great specs and that LED keyboard amazes me, but I am wondering if it will be good for everyday use, since I do want to use it for school later down the road. Also the 15.6 screen is a plus this Macbook Pro with retina display is great plus I can use it for school and maybe.. some gaming, since I am not a pro gamer. The only thing is that it is 13.3 inches.

So I am confused on which to get.. I mostly want it to watch videos, ocassionally play video games and on the side for school!
The MBP Retina 13" won't disappoint.

Load up Steam and you've got a great source of games. If you'll be lugging around your computer wherever you go, the MBP is a great choice since it's so light.

Plus, burning the midnight oil is hard on your eyes, writing a paper at 3AM is much easier on a retina display.
