Needs more horsepower, DLNA compatibility

It's a neat toy, since you can stream to it from Chrome and other apps on various devices. But it gets more difficult to make it work as you stray further from the GoogleSphere, since it does not support the DLNA standard that many other streaming sources use. The other problem is that the video is choppy at times despite a solid wireless connection. They use pre-optimization tricks for some of the content but if the content you want isn't lucky enough to get that treatement, the Chromecast has to work a lot harder to play it, and can fall behind. I think for everyday streaming, the money would be better put towards a more powerful box, perhaps the Chromecast Ultra, or a Roku, or smart Blu-ray player. I still use my 10 year old Sony PS3 for heavy streaming.

Worth the extra $$ over base model

I bought this as a replacement for another 5.1 receiver that recently burnt out. The previous two 5.1 receivers I have purchased were the entry-level models of a different familiar midrange brand. This time I decided to buy a Yamaha, mainly because the height of their receivers is lower than the others and fit better into my TV stand, allowing more room for ventilation, which in turn will hopefully help this one to last longer than 5 years. So I went in to buy the base model which was on-sale, but ended up buying this model - the next one up in the line - because of its network features. I have now been using it for a few weeks and am very pleased with its performance. The power rating is lower than my previous one, but it must be a more honest rating since it is every bit as powerful driving four large speakers and a large center speaker. Beyond the basics of good sound though, I am really happy with the ease of setup and use, with an on-screen display that overlays on the HDMI signal so that it is really usable, a more readable and informative display on receiver itself, and many flexible and handy features for tailoring your inputs and sound modes, etc. to be just how you want them. Some of that comes on the base model too, but when you add in the network/Wi-Fi features this one has, it really completes the package with a great deal of added value. I love the flexibility of being able to use wired Ethernet (since I have it) or Wi-Fi and the ability to easily tune hundreds of internet radio stations on either the on-screen or front panel displays, or from a phone or tablet. In fact you can easily control many of the functions of the receiver from a device over the network. I even found an app for my Windows phone! And you can send music to the receiver over Bluetooth, or listen to music from it on Bluetooth headphones. If that's not enough, you can also stream music to it over AirPlay from ITunes or DLNA from Windows or other Media Players. One more thing - The remote control is very nice and easy to use, with fewer, larger buttons than my old one. Overall, I think this is one of the best purchases I have made in years and is definitely worth the extra money over the base model.

What's the small port on the device for?

Well, for one thing, you can connect an optional wired Ethernet adapter to it.

Been watching this for 2 or 3 months now. Price hasen't budged. Has anyone got or seen this on sale? Really like it and check weekly but frustrating it never goes on sale. Even $350 and I'd pull the trigger.

If you've been watching online, try going into a store. I found a better price on it in the store than what was posted online.
