Good Value for a Nice Gaming Rig
on May 1, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Sharp “gaming” design.
* Fast (little bloatware).
* Relatively light-weight.
* Easy access to upgrade memory and storage disk.
* Comes with a neoprene travel sleeve for the notebook.
* Full gaming-optimized backlit keyboard.
Cons:
* Trackpad “click” requires a lot of force/travel.
* Plastic body feels cheaper than a metal case.
This is a relatively good value for a speedy mid-level gaming laptop. The screen is standard HD resolution 1080p) and is easy to see from most viewing angles (IPS). The overall system is speedy and not too bloated with extra software. In fact, it runs the Oculus Rift well enough to be usable, although not many would choose a laptop as a VR rig. The AC charging adapter is mid-sized which makes it a tad large for travel use; not the largest I’ve seen but it’s also not small.
During setup, the trackpad was disabled by default and there’s no touchscreen, so I had to turn the trackpad on with the function key on the keyboard. This shouldn’t be a big deal for anyone buying a gaming rig as they probably know enough to figure it out, too. The speakers are loud enough and clear although not really high fidelity. The built-in webcam works well, too. The full size backlit keyboard has highlights around the gaming-focused “WASD” keys and there’s also a separate numeric keypad.
Really, I have only a few small omplaints. The trackpad’s “click” functions require a firm deep push. Of course, you can just tap the pad instead of actually “clicking” the buttons at the corners. The plastic shell doesn’t really have a premium feeling to it, but this notebook is not the high-end of their series, so it’s not a big deal.
Overall, this is a nice mid-level gaming rig. It does the basics right and is a good value.

Better than a manual pad-type mop but a bit pricey
on April 29, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Lightweight
* Easy to use
* Sufficient motor power
* Adequate battery life
* Refillable fluid bottle and reusable cleaning pads
Cons:
* Could use more pressure on the pads for deeper cleaning
* Easy to “walk away” while spinning so have to control its motion
* Poor value versus similar non-motorized mops
We have terrazzo and tile flooring throughout our home. Vacuuming is necessary for regular maintenance but wet mopping must also be done to get the typical traffic areas and muddy foot and paw prints. We’ve tried everything from manual (Swiffer-type) to motorized (Floor-mate) options and even semi-commercial spinning hard floor cleaners. They all have their pros and cons, so we’re constantly on the look-out for better options.
The Bissell SpinWave Cordless mop is a reasonably good option for fill-in cleaning but isn’t quite optimal for more intense cleaning. The unit is relatively light which is a double-edged sword for cleaning floors; it’s easy to carry from room to room, but the lack of heft means that it doesn’t really muscle in to scrub the floors. It does a better job than the manual mops due to the spinning pads so it’s great for day-to day cleaning, but not so great for really deep cleaning.
There are two buttons on the handle that are easy to see and use; one for turning the unit on and off and the other for manually spraying the solution from the refillable bottle. The battery status LEDs are easy to see and understand, too. The AC adapter is a typical wall-wart type that plugs into a hole on the handle. A docking base would be really nice, since it has a docking tray (to keep the wet pads from sitting on the floor) but you still have to plug the charging cable in separately.
Overall, the unit cleans well enough and is easier to use than a manual spray-type mop for every-day cleaning. The value for the price paid is not the best, and would be better at a lower cost (price reduction or when on sale). The included reusable pads and refillable bottle make the price paid a bit easier to accept since you don’t have to continuously buy new bottles of fluid or replace disposable pads.

Strong Signal and Attractive Looks.
on April 7, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
This is a really nice off-air antenna that is attractive enough to be used indoors. The package comes with several wall and tabletop mounting option, a USB-powered amplifier and plenty of cabling.
The real reason to buy an amplified antenna like this is to get strong HDTV signal for a lot of free channels. My prior antenna was just a cheap set of rabbit ears (see attached photo). I tried both the cheap rabbit ears and the Mohu Beam antennas in the same exact spot connected to the same TV and compared the number of channels that came in strong enough to watch.
I first plugged in the cheap rabbit ears to my Samsung 40” LCD HDTV and allowed it to scan for off-air channels. It found 33 channels of which only a few (13 of 33) came in clear enough to watch. I then swapped out that antenna with the Mohu Beam and ran the same channel scan. This time the TV found about the same number of channels, but nearly all of them (29 of 32) were clear enough to watch.
In short, the antenna looks great but most importantly, it does a great job receiving local off-air HDTV channels. This will definitely come in handy during hurricane season when our satellite TV goes out but we still have generator electricity. And as a bonus, it looks nice, too.

Middle of the road.

Decent sound and comfort top the list as the best features of these headphones. Noise cancellation and switching between devices rise to the top of the worst features. Overall not a bad pair of headphones at this price point, but, if you are looking for something with good noise cancellation these are not the pair for you. Wore to the gym today and could still easily hear everything going on around me. Battery life is good in all situations: listening, on but not in use and standby. Overall not the worst or best just ok.

Great image and features for its size!
on March 20, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Great image quality (brightness, resolution, colors, etc.).
* Very portable (projector itself).
* Good battery life (4 hours - about 2 movies).
* Great connectivity options (HDMI, USB, Wireless, Bluetooth for speakers).
* Nice features (built-in media player, auto-keystone, etc.)
Cons:
* Wireless video doesn’t work with Apple devices.
* Large packing space required (for projector, AC adapter and cords and remote control).
* Weak built-in speaker.
For its size, this is a great portable projector! The image quality is really sharp with nice colors, high native resolution and good brightness. I projected from my iPhone X using a Lightening-to-HDMI adapter and the image was really nice. Like most projectors, this one works best in a slightly darkened room, but the image seems brighter than average for its size. I also put a few videos and photos on a standard USB drive and the projector had no problems playing them with its built-in media player.
There is a standard 5-way navigation control button array on the top of the projector which enables access to all functions; albeit with a little menu digging. The included remote control provides a bit more convenience as it has direct-access buttons for all major function and a few of the more esoteric ones like “PJT Mode” which allows the projected image to be set upside down or reversed for projecting onto the back of a screen instead of onto a wall. There are also buttons on the remote for direct input mode selection. Note that this isn’t necessarily designed as a business projector, so there is no laser pointer on the remote or specific slide-show mode.
The built-in speaker is good enough to get the gist of what’s happening on-screen, but you’d be much better off connecting to either wired (headphone jack) or Bluetooth headphones/speakers.
My only complaint is that even though the projector itself is rather small and portable if that’s all you need to carry (see image comparison with an iPhone X), carrying the remote and AC adapter with cables more than doubles the pack size (see image). If you only need 4 hours of use and can make-do with the onboard navigation buttons, then you’ll be fine with just the projector. If you need to charge it or need direct access to functions via the remote, you’ll also have to carry the other stuff which makes it a lot less “portable.”

Wireless high fidelity with luxurious comfort.
on March 6, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Awesome sound.
* Comfortable fit.
* All-day battery life.
* Noise cancelling works great.
* Simple controls.
* Lightweight.
Cons:
* Buttons could be a bit easier to use.
* Cannot turn off noise cancelling when in Bluetooth mode.
* Max volume is mostly loud enough but could be louder.
* Missing some convenience-focused features.
If you’re looking for luxurious wireless headphones that are comfortable and sound great for all-day listening, you found them! Starting with the soothing British voice announcements (battery life, connection status, etc.) all the way through to the smooth and accurate audio; these headphones will envelop you in the music. I’m no audiophile but I could readily notice the subtle improvements in sound clarity with these headphones versus others I have used; especially Bluetooth headphones.
There are just two very simple controls on the right ear; a power/pairing button and a 3-way rocker switch (slide up/down for volume and press for multi-function). Simplicity is a double-edged sword, though. Hold the power/pairing button just long enough and the headphones turn on or off. Hold it just a bit too long and the headphones switch into Bluetooth pairing mode. The 3-way rocker switch works well enough, but things like checking battery status require you to pause the music and then triple-press that button. I would have preferred a pair of dedicated volume buttons on the left earpiece and a pair of track button on the right, but this is a nit and NOT a dealbreaker. A little texture on the top of that rocker button would have been nice, too. I’m a fan of discrete buttons rather than repurposing them depending on context.
I would say my biggest complaint is that the admittedly great noise cancelling feature cannot be deactivated when using these headphones in Bluetooth wireless mode. The obvious reason to turn off the noise cancelling feature would be to conserve battery power if listening in an already-quiet environment. These headphones are rated at 22 hours of wireless playback with the noise cancelling feature on. If that feature could be turned off, these could potentially last a lot longer on a charge.
While cheaper headphones have convenience features like auto-pause when taking them off your ears, these are just great cans; pure and simple. I have no complaints about the sound (awesome), the comfort (luxurious) or the connectivity (rock-solid). In fact, I had to dig to find anything to mention as cons. These really are incredible headphones that blur the distinction between wired and wireless fidelity.

Great Buds! Case is just OK.
on March 2, 2018
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Sound great!
* Work great for phone calls/voice assistants.
* Fit snugly and don’t fall out.
* Solid wireless connection.
* Great battery life (5hrs plus 2 full recharges in the case).
* Compact carrying case.
Cons:
* Case is not easy to open - especially one-handed.
* Battery status indicators for buds and case are not clear.
* Buds easily fall out of case when the lid is open.
Ok - so the pros listed above are crucial to wireless earbuds and the cons are really just minor complaints, but what good is a product review if both the good and bad weren’t mentioned?
These buds have it where it counts in sound quality, fit and battery life. Rather than compare them to other brands and models, I’ll just say that I really like these buds. So far, the audio has been rock-solid and any disconnection was due to major wireless interference nearby or my phone just being too far away; the same reasons for disconnection with any Bluetooth earbuds.
The case is nice and compact, but that is the only really good thing I can say about it. Firstly, the lid is impossible to open one-handed by attempting to flick the lid open with a finger. Even when holding the case with one hand and opening with the other hand, the lid is really tough to open without accidentally flinging the buds onto the floor. A magnetic clasp would probably have worked better than the typical friction tab. Once the lid is open, the buds rest precariously in their holes on top of springy pogo-pins. A slight tip of the case will send them tumbling to the floor - so be careful. Perhaps a deeper hole or magnets would have held them in the case a little better.
The second thing I don’t really love about the case is the way it shows the battery status. When you open the lid to the case, there is a small LED between the buds that shows the battery status of the pair of buds by color. This LED has a few issues; those who cannot discern color or can’t see the color in bright light will be at a loss. This LED also stays on for only about 3 seconds so if you miss it, you’re out of luck until you can check their status elsewhere (phone’s status bar or bud feedback when inserted in your ears). The case also has another LED to indicate how much of a recharge it can give the buds (their extra 2 recharges). Same issues as the inside status indicator (color, brightness and short duration) but the case’s LED is on the bottom edge so you have to close the lid and quickly flip the case over to see the light which is, again, only on for about 3 seconds.
These case issues are really minor nits because the buds themselves sound, fit and work great and the case is merely a “bonus.” I would definitely not disregard these buds just because of some small design issues with the case, but if Jabra were to improve the case just a bit, these buds would get 5 stars.

Great Sounding Google-enabled Speaker
on December 14, 2017
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
The JBL Link 300 Speaker sounds great and because it has the Google voice assistant built-in, is easy to use. It really packs a punch with clear highs and deep lows for its size. Like most Google-enabled home speakers, it can also connect to phones and tablets as a bluetooth speaker.
There are six (6) access buttons on top of the speaker to supplement the voice-enabled commands. Here is where my first small complaint about this speaker comes in: the button that initiates the Google Voice Commands has a nice indent and is easy to find by touch alone. This is great at night or in low-light conditions when you want push a button but are not looking at the top of the speaker. All other buttons are flush to the top surface of the speaker and have no tactile indication of where they are or what they do. In other words, these other buttons (volume up/down, play/pause, mute, etc.) are really only usable in normal room lighting and when looking directly at the top of the speaker; you can’t really feel for them. My preference would be to at least have a raised dot on each so you can feel for the Voice button’s indent and then count the dots to either side to determine where the buttons are and what they do; first dot to the right of the Voice button is volume down, next over is volume up, etc…
My next small complaint is that there is a white WiFi icon on the front that stays on 100% of the time when the speaker is plugged in and connected to WiFi. While this is nice to know when the speaker is disconnected (by the color change of the icon, etc.), it also is a bright glowing LED at night - not great when you’re trying to sleep. It would be nice if that LED would turn on when the speaker first connects to WiFi and again when commands are initiated but then turn off until there is a status change.
Aside from these two small nits, the speaker sounds great, is compact and attractive. It does exactly what you’d expect it to do; be a (mostly) unobtrusive access point for the Google Assistant and a nice speaker for music playback.

Nice Laptop- Not Great Tablet
on December 5, 2017
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
This HP Envy laptop is nicely designed and reasonably powerful. The touchscreen works well although Windows 10 still isn’t completely comfortable for navigation with finger access.
While it’s a fine laptop for use in normal mode, the design concessions for enabling the tablet mode causes some issues. Namely, when in laptop mode, the lid is not completely stable when touching the screen. When in tablet mode, the whole unit is too big and heavy to easily use as a tablet.
In other words, if you use this as a laptop with occasional touch access on the screen, you’ll be fine. If you regularly want to touch the screen rather than use the trackpad or a mouse, expect the screen to wobble quite a bit (plus needing to clean the screen frequently).
If you’re looking for a good tablet, there might be better options that are strictly tablets or those with detachable keyboards. This HP Envy laptop is not really comfortable with the screen folded back and the keyboard exposed. Plus, it’s not very light when held as a tablet.
The speakers are good enough to get by without having to connect external ones for personal listening. The backlit keyboard is a great feature, but the keyboard backlighting bleeds quite a bit as shown in the accompanying photo.
The included AC adapter is one of the smaller ones I’ve seen and the cables are nice, but there is no real cable management so you just have to velcro the two wires into a bundle when not in use.
This is a handsome laptop with nice specs, but is best considered as a competent laptop and not a dual-mode tablet, too.

Power, Beauty and Easy to Use but not Quiet
on December 5, 2017
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
I look for a few specific features in a good blender:
* Powerful
* Easy to control
* Easy to clean
* Quiet
This Blendtec Designer Series blender meets 3 of these 4 desired features.
1. Powerful - this thing has some serious muscle! While the blade doesn’t look really sharp, it does the job quite well. I followed the included recipe to make Tortilla Soup by dropping in various ingredients and not going out of my way to pre-cut them up. This blender made quick work of turning the large chunks of vegetables into hot soup in only a few short minutes. Bravo and check one required feature off the list.
2. Easy to control - the touch panel has pre-programmed buttons for things like soup and smoothies. One press of the respective icon starts the blender doing what it needs to do. The touch-enabled slider control makes it easy to select a specific speed and the timer display lets you know how long it’s been running. Another bonus for the Blendtec.
3. Easy to clean - I’m a neat freak and prefer appliances that are easy to clean after use. They thought of a ton of nice touches like drain holes in the handle and the bottom of the provided WildSide+ container. The touch-enabled control panel is also easy to wipe clean. There are even easy to access hand holds on the bottom sides to make it easy to pick up and put away the base. My only complaint here is that captive (non-removable) cord doesn’t have any storage or wrap, so you just have to bundle it up with the provided Velcro tie and let the cord bundle flop around the back.
4. Quiet - here’s where the substantial power from feature 1 above conflicts with the desire for a quiet appliance. The Blendtec’s power is great but it’s also quite noisy. The splines of the container shaft match great with the motor housing, but there’s a bit of noise generated while in operation. This is by no means a dealbreaker, but if you’re looking for a blender with power and quiet operation, you might want to look elsewhere.
Overall, this Blendtec blender is a substantial piece of kitchen appliance gadgetry. It’s attractive to look at and matches the look of stainless steel appliances that you may already have in your kitchen. It’s also easy to use, easy to clean and has more than enough power to chop up whatever you put in it… as long as you don’t plan on carrying on a normal conversation with someone nearby.
