Quiet, nice features, good value
on September 19, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Very quiet at low speeds
* Automatic settings that work well
* HEPA and Plasma ion
Cons:
* Buttons are hard to read in low light
* Could be easier to replace filters
* Replacement filters are nearly 30% of the original cost
* No app, Bluetooth or WiFi
TLDR:
(that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)
Instant always makes a good product at a good value and this Air Purifier is no exception. On slower speeds, it is whisper quiet but even cranked up, it’s not very loud. It has some nice features and options that could use a bit of refinement, but are still appreciate. There is no app connectivity, but do you really need that for an air purifier? The replacement filters are nearly 1/3 of the original cost of the unit but overall, this is a substantial value for an air purifier with these features.
Summary:
These days, it’s almost a given that product must have a phone app and be Bluetooth or WiFi -connected (everything is better with BlueTooth, right?). There are numerous air purifiers with that, but there is still a place for appliances that merely serve a function and do it well. This Instant Air Purifier is firmly in that category. Set it to “Automatic” and leave it alone until you need to replace the filter (a blinking orange LED on the top will let you know when). Otherwise, it will do its thing of cleaning your air without need for Bluetooth pairing, WiFi access point linking or App installations.
There is a nice ring of light on the top that signifies the cleanliness of your air. From above, this creates a nice glow around the control panel. You can easily change the brightness of that light or even turn it off completely. Leave the unit in Auto mode and that ring of light will turn off at night and back on during the day. It’s even smart enough to disable the Plasma ion feature at night because that makes the unit nearly silent when it’s off. From the side, the ring of light is clearly a few LEDs in a translucent diffuser because you can see the points of light. More expensive brands might have done a better job of hiding this from view, but again, this unit is a value proposition and a good one at that.
The touch buttons on the top are easy enough to use and see whether the respective settings are on or off. My only suggestion is that the buttons be backlit so that you can find and read them more easily in a dark room.
When it comes time to replace the filter, it’s easy enough but could be nicer. You basically have to flip the unit upside down, rotate and remove the bottom cover, and then remove and replace the filter. I’ve seen other (more expensive) units that you replace the filter by rotating the top portion of the housing and lifting it up and off the bottom to gain access to the filter rather than having to flip the whole unit upside down, etc… This isn’t necessary bad, but could be a tad nicer. Regarding the filter; beware that with all similar air purifiers, the replacement filters are … not inexpensive. This filter retails for about 30% of the initial cost of the unit and, depending on how much work it needs to do to clean your air, you might need to buy two of them each year.
The power cord is long enough and is a simple power cord with no excessive AC adapter, so that’s good. The user’s manual is thorough, too.
Overall, this is a really nice unit with some novel features. It’s not a “luxury” product, but it also isn’t priced like one. What few flaws I noted are really just areas for improvement and not reasons to skip consideration of this air purifier. If asked, I would definitely buy it again.

The Dell XPS 17 laptop delivers powerful performance in an incredibly thin form factor. The stunning 4-sided InfinityEdge UHD+ display enables an amazing screen to body ratio (93.7%) and a 17-inch screen in a 15-inch size form factor. In fact, it’s smaller than 48% of 15-inch laptops. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics feature unique dual opposite outlet fans, that increase fan airflow by approximately 30% and drive cooling airflow in both directions, resulting in more airflow overall and improved skin temperatures. A 100% Adobe RGB display enables you to edit your videos with confidence in their color. 100% of the enclosure is sculpted by a CNC (computer numerical control) machining process. A high precision, machine-milled aluminum chassis creates an elegant design with high build quality that’s stronger and stiffer than magnesium or plastic. A premium 17" touch laptop with a thin and light design.

A Workhorse! Compact, Amazing Screen, Fast.
on September 11, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Amazing UHD Touchscreen with minimal bezel
* Full size and comfortable keyboard
* Fast!
* Great built-in speakers
* Great built-in webcam for Video Meetings
* Fingerprint reader for security
* Great battery life
* Small and light for its screen size
Cons:
* No numeric keypad
* Bulky power adapter
Summary:
This 17” Dell Notebook will definitely be cross-shopped with other Windows notebooks, but probably also with a MacBook Pro 16” (which I also own). The days of Mac vs. PC are pretty much over and you can do more less everything you want on either. You can switch between both seamlessly if your files are on cloud drives, considering that most creative and professional apps work as well on both. So it basically comes down to which package do you like?
The 16” MacBook Pro is no slouch, but this 17” Dell Notebook is faster and has a much better screen in a chassis that just 1/2” wider but otherwise the same physical size! That screen is stunning… full UHD 4k resolution with a bright and accurate color palette. The combination of the huge trackpad and a full touchscreen makes navigation a breeze - especially if you have a lot of apps open at the same time on that high-resolution screen. For greater security and ease of use, you can enable Windows Hello with the camera or the fingerprint scanner; both worked equally well with Windows 10.
I’m a User Experience Designer by trade and spend my days designing and documenting UIs and sitting on video meetings. I threw all of my normal apps at this Dell; the full Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, the full Microsoft Office Suite, etc.. I was able to juggle more than enough to fill up my screen (and day) while also joining live Teams video meetings. This notebook would not slow down or heat up. What more can you ask for?
I only have a few small suggestions for improvement. While the keyboard is full-size and easy to type on, a numeric keypad would be a welcome addition. I’m sure one could be fit in with not too much difficulty. The second is the power adapter; it’s a standard Dell design but USB-C on the end instead of the older-style barrel plug. You can wrap that captive PC-side cord around the adapter body, but the wall-end cord still has to dangle and won’t easily wrap around… at least you can unplug that end if you want to be totally tidy. While the adapter is not as large as other Dell notebooks that I’ve used, it still can’t be called “small” by any means.
Overall, this attractive Dell notebook has a comfortable keyboard, a beautiful 4k screen and tons of power under the hood in a chassis that doesn’t weigh you down or take up a full desk. It’s easy to carry around everything you need and still have room to spare in your bag. While I love my Mac, this Dell notebook is what I’ll spend my days working on.

Compatible and FAST!

I normally like to do a detailed review when I post about a product that I like, but there isn't much to say about this SSD. For a component designed to not be seen again after installation, it looks great. It fits just like you'd expect. It has a great WD warranty. And most importantly, it's fast
Overall, this is a great value for a well-supported product. Highly recommended.

Light, Rugged, Fast
on June 27, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Lightweight.
* Rugged case feels like it can take some bumps easily.
* Fast and compatible.
* Amazing battery life.
* Drain holes for keyboard spills.
* Useful ports.
Cons:
* No touchscreen.
* Bottom-firing speakers are adequate but not great.
* No keyboard backlight.
* Power adapter is large.
Summary:
A ChromeBook is an odd beast. It behaves much luck a tablet but with the familiar design of a traditional laptop. For many people, this is all they need to be entertained or productive. I won’t focus on the ChromeOS itself because this ChromeBook runs it without skipping a beat. Instead, I’ll try to give you a feeling for how this particular ChromeBook stacks up to the other ChromeBook options out there.
When you first pick it up, you’ll notice two things; it’s amazingly light and thanks to the rubber bumper surrounding it, it feels light it can take some moderate abuse without showing it. There are several useful ports on the left and right including a microSD slot. The textured screen back looks nice but in practice is seems to show fingerprints a lot. The speakers are bottom-firing which is OK if you have it on a solid table, but put in on your lap, carpet or even a blanket and the sound really muffles and suffers.
Open the lid and it instantly pops to life from standby. The keyboard is roomy and comfortable with helpful shortcut keys for volume, screen brightness and OS navigation. No backlit keyboard here, though… not surprising given its low price point. It does, however, have drain holes under the notebook so if you spill something on it, it’ll be easier to clean up than most. The trackpad is roomy, too, and works well given that you’ll need to use it often since there is no touchscreen.
The screen is bright and colorful and for its size, does the job well. Also don’t expect fancy things like slim bezels, but at least there’s a useful selfie video camera that performs adequately. I had no complaints about wireless performance it quickly got online and stayed online. Battery life is as amazing as you might expect from a ChromeBook, too. In fact, unless you’re streaming video 24/7, you might only need to charge it once a week! When it is time to charge, the provided brick connects via USB-C on either side. The brick is a bit larger and more cumbersome than I’d like, but at least you won’t need it often.
Overall, on the understanding that the ChromeOS meets your needs, this ChromeBook is an amazing value. It’ll do just about anything you throw at it for a long time. Don’t expect a ton of frills and you won’t be disappointed.

Great Design, Great Monitor for Gaming
on June 13, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Excellent refresh rate even at 4K resolution.
* Convenient VESA mount.
* DDC input switching via command line.
Cons:
* On-monitor controls are difficult to use.
Summary:
Well built and mounts to a monitor arm easy for portrait or landscape use.  Virtually no flicker or tearing in games, even at 4k resolutions.  HDR doesn’t really add much to the experience so if you are looking for that, this may not be your monitor. Plus, depending on your graphics card, HDR may only work if connected via HDMI.
One of the hidden gems of the monitor is the ability to use DDC to change the monitor input channel via the command line.  If you need to hook up several machines this makes it super simple to switch video input depending on which machine you are using.
Thankfully, you probably won’t need to use the control buttons on the monitor often, because they are really obtuse in shape, layout and labeling. They are on the back of the monitor and the icons representing what they do are on the side. Also, there isn’t much in the way of a logical layout - they are just 4 buttons in column.
Overall a good monitor for gaming. What few complaints I have do not prevent a recommendation for regular daily use for gaming or any other task.

Sound OK, Not Universal Fit, Odd Look
on May 22, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Lightweight.
* Good battery life.
* Magnetic charging with provided cable.
* Tactile buttons.
* Sound OK (but not great).
Cons:
* Din’t fit my frames and tended to pop off.
* Cannot fold frames with product attached.
* Proprietary charging cable required (provided, though).
* Button functions are complex.
* Looks really odd.
Summary:
I love always having music playing in the background. Normally I have music in every room of the house when everyone at home is up. If using headphone, I like to be aware of what’s going on around me so I typically wear some sort of headphone that doesn’t completely block my ear. When outside, that is usually a pair of sunglasses with built-in speakers in the sides of the frame. That’s great if outside in the sun, but what about when inside and wearing eyeglasses?
That’s where the JLab Jbuds Frame come in. They essentially transform your own sunglasses or eyeglass frames into music devices. Think of them as true wireless earbuds that mount on the sides of your own frames instead of sticking in or hanging on your ears… just like those sunglasses that I mentioned but instead of being built-in, they mount to just about any frame of your choosing.
In theory, that’s great! In practice, these just don’t live up the promise. They have fixed molded hooks that are supposed to clip onto the sides of your glasses. I tried my regular eyeglasses, my readers that I wear over contacts and even a pair of regular sunglasses. The hooks didn’t fit on any of them securely. That right there is enough of dealbreaker because if they won’t mount on your frames, they cannot really be used. But let’s say they do fit on your frames, you probably won’t be able to fold the sides in with the JBuds attached, either. They also are questionable in the fashion department, too. I’m not sure I’d want to wear these out of the house, but that’s just me.
They’re not all bad. If they do fit on your frames and you don’t mind not being able to fold the sides in with them mounted and you can get past their odd looks, they do work as advertised. They sound OK if slid all the way back so that they essentially touch your ears. They don’t sound great, but they work for background audio. The true wireless aspects functioned as expected in that they paired easily, reconnected easily, and didn’t loose connection during use.
There is a tactile button on each bud which is good, but the function of each button is complex. At least they both turn off by turning off either one, but aside from that, the basic functionality is something you’d really have to memorize. Single press the right button to raise or the left button to lower the volume. Double press the right button to play/pause or the left to invoke your phone’s voice assistant, etc…
Battery life was good but not awesome considering their size and the fact that many other true wireless earbuds at half their size have similar battery life. When it’s time to charge them, you must use the proprietary magnetic cable. It’s nice that the cable can charge both buds at the same time, but if you loose or don’t have the cable handy, you’re out of luck.
Overall, an OK effort for a very niche product, but there is a LOT of room for improvement - especially in the way they attach to your frames. I would much rather use other types of product (like a speaker that rests on my collarbone) instead.

Safe, Precise, Easy to Hold, Long Charge
on April 11, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Blade is comfortable and safe on most body areas.
* Charges quickly and holds the charge for a long time.
* Comfortable and easy to hold.
* Precise trimming.
Cons:
* Provided carry pouch is functional but blah.
* Trimmer guard is a bit large and cumbersome.
* Can only stand up when on its charging base.
Summary:
I’ve already got several hair trimmers and shavers for various uses and frankly didn’t see the need for this product. After trying it out, though, it definitely has some benefits that my other trimmers don’t. The blade design is far more comfortable for trimming face and body areas without pinching or nicking. While it’s not necessarily applicable for ALL areas, it works great for most. The blade design is also much better for precise work and is easily replaceable when the time comes for a fresh trimmer head. Blade removal is easy to do when you want but not easy to accidentally trigger.
The handle is slim yet comfortable to hold and the charging stand is nicely weighted so it’s easy to just pick up for use. The display is simple yet informative with battery percentage and charging status. It’s easy to put the unit in travel mode whereby the button doesn’t toggle the power accidentally. The bottom isn’t flat, though, so it can only stand up vertically when in its charging base. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of. At least the back is flat so you can put it on a counter and it won’t easily roll away.
The blade and head design makes it really easy to do precision trimming and the blade itself is comfortable and safe to use on all but the most, um… sensitive… body regions. There is a nice cover for the blade when not in use that clamps over it. It comes with a snap-on guide with a rotary dial to set the trimming length. Overall, the guide works well, but is a tad bulky and cumbersome when attached - especially given the simplicity of the unit when that guide is not installed.
The kit also came with a carrying/travel pouch. While it seems functional and relatively attractive, it is basically just a cloth bag with a draw string. I would have liked a hard case or something more form-fitting, but it works and keeps all the bits contained.
Basically, this trimmer works great for precise work and cleaning up stray hairs. The guard works but adds bulk and complexity. The base keeps the unit upright and charged. While this may not be the only trimmer you’ll ever need, it will definitely fit a need and keep you looking your best with ease.

Comfort, Fit and Sound Isolation
on March 13, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Stays securely in my ears better than with the silicone tips.
* Still fits in the charging case.
* Blocks more outside noise.
Cons:
* Reusable but eventually must replace.
Summary:
I love the AirPods Pro; they sounds great, the noise cancellation is great and best of all- they just work. But for me, they fall out far too easily with the provided silicone tips. Even if I clean my ears and the tips just before inserting them, they quickly loosen up and slide out no matter what size silicone tip I use.
These Comply foam tips save the day! They fit perfectly on the AirPods Pro and the AirPods themselves still fit just fine in their charging case. Best of all, not only do the AirPods Pro now stay in my ears, they also seem to block out more ambient noise so the Noise Cancellation feature is more effective.
You basically squeeze the foam with your fingers to compress it just before inserting them in your ears. Then when you wear them, the foam expands to fit your ear and holds the AirPods in your ears more securely. The foam is mostly smooth but with just enough texture to hold firm.
In short, they feel great, fit great and make the AirPods Pro stay in and sound great. Just be aware that the foam will eventually get gunky enough that they won’t compress and expand well any more. When that happens, you pop them off and replace them with a fresh set. I still clean my ears a bit before using them, and seem to get about 3-4 months of regular use before needing to replace with a new set. You get 3 sets in the box, so that’s about a year’s supply if your usage is similar to mine.
I was slightly disappointed with the AirPods Pro when I got them because they kept loosening up. These Comply tips have renewed my love of the AirPods Pro and are well worth paying for replacement tips!

Fantastic Sound and Build Quality
on February 28, 2021
Posted by: gadgeTT
from South Florida
Pros:
* Amazing sound and clarity.
* Solid build quality.
* Unassuming design fits anywhere.
Cons:
* Magnetic speaker grill is not very secure or fancy.
* Provided simple rubber feet are not what one would expect for such a high-end speaker.
Summary:
I am not an audiophile and won’t get into frequency response, ability to tune the speaker to a room or any of the technical details that other reviewers will probably be much more competent to talk about. I have it connected to a Denon AVR-X5300H home theater receiver with Martin Logan mains and surrounds. Center channel audio sounded fantastic for everything that I threw at it; from Dolby Atoms UHD movies to just plain old streaming TV through my home theater… all sounded great!
As you can see from the main product photos, this is basically just black wooden box with a cloth speaker griller that magnetically attaches to the front. The speaker grille does its job; it stays put unless bumped and is sonically transparent. This speaker is not a statement in visual design - it mostly just blends into the background and makes great center channel audio. What more could you want?
One of the few things that surprised me is that the box came with tiny clear rubber sticker feet if you want to use them. At this price and performance level, I might expect something a bit more robust or impressive, but they worked. You can put them anywhere on any side that fits the desired placement in your home so that was nice.
Some speakers are also a visual design statement and this are not that. But if you want great center channel audio for just about any source or genre, this speaker sounds awesome.

I have them connected to a Denon AVR-X5300H home theater receiver and what I will say is that these speakers sound fantastic for everything that I threw at them; Jazz, EDM, Podcasts, Dolby Atoms movies and even just plain old TV with my home theater… all sounded great!
As you can see from the main product photos, these are basically black wooden boxes with a cloth speaker griller that magnetically attaches to the front. The speaker grilles do their job; they stay put unless bumped and are sonically transparent. These speakers are not a statement in visual design - they mostly just blend into the background and make great sounds.
Some speakers are also a visual design statement and these are not that. But if you want great audio for just about any source or genre, these speakers sound awesome.

The Nest Doorbell is the battery-powered video doorbell that works with any home. See what’s happening at your door from anywhere and get intelligent alerts about important activity, like when there’s a person, package, animal, or vehicle.* And because there are no wires, you can install it yourself. Nest Doorbell requires the Google Home app and a Google Account – it’s not compatible with the Nest app or the home.nest.com site.

Where can I buy a replacement battery? How much does the replacement battery cost?

The internal battery is not replaceable by the customer. You have to remove the whole doorbell from the mounting bracket using the supplied metal "key", bring it inside and plug it in to recharge it... about every 2-3 months.

And, it’s all done on your own device, giving you complete control over your data, where it’s stored and how it is used. It’s the easy, cost effective way to organize and manage your finances.

Does it extract receipt information into software that can be sent to quickbooks online?

It claims to, although I'm not a QuickBooks user so I cannot verify. The box clearly states that it does this, tough.

Has anyone been able to get the game/chat balancer working properly? I have looked everywhere for a solid solution and have not been able to get it working or find a working example. the game/chat balancer for me makes ALL sounds quieter or louder.

As near as I can tell, this balances the audio between the TOSLINK (optical) input on the USB puck and the audio coming from the USB connection. If you're not using the TOSLINK input, then the switch will basically be useless. Hope this helps.
