Solid powerhouse

It has been a good while since I’ve updated my gaming laptop and I was excited to have a chance to pick up this latest ASUS ROG model as a replacement for my last ROG. If you’ve never had a laptop from this line, you have no idea what you are missing!
Right out of the box you can tell it is a solid build. Asus integrated this slash pattern of LEDs on the lid that is very distinctive. From there you open up and find a practically borderless screen that is sharper and has more vivid color than I’ve found on any laptop. That brings me to the speed - oh, the speed!
There’s been a lot of grumbling about specs for one of my favorite newly released games, and I was looking forward to cranking the levels up and seeing what would happen. It performed like a champ, holding on for highly complex simulations with no sweat at all.
There are so many features and configurations you can make with this computer that I did find it a little overwhelming. Inside of the included Armoury crate is a total command center of functions and performance monitors and choose from.
If there was only one weaker spot on this product it’s the audio speakers. I know not to expect too much from a laptop, but these were particularly underwhelming. Thankfully I don’t use them for much and play with a headset.
All in all I would say this is a stellar laptop for gaming addicts and anyone that needs a lot of performance for their work.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Eco conscious and high tech
on January 10, 2024

I’ve been looking for a shower head to replace my apartment standard issue one for quite a while now and it wasn’t until now that I found something both functional and unique. Right out of the box the Hai is super easy to use install and doesn’t require much in the way of tools. There’s a video right in the app that will walk you through each step if you’re nervous about plumbing stuff like I am. Once installed, you turn on the shower and go through the Bluetooth pairing process. You might be asking yourself how the Hai gets power since there’s no plug or batteries. It’s magic, i tell you! There is a mini turbine that converts the force of your water flow into useful energy. The product is very eco focused, and will help you work toward conserving water in the shower. Part of this comes from telling you with a push notification when the water is hot enough for you, and the rest comes from the data insights you get after each shower. The handheld shower head has a simple slider to change the spray from more of a mist to an intense burst, and the hose is plenty long though that I can use it to help when cleaning out my tub. All in all I would say if you’re eco conscious and want a great shower head with intelligent insights, this is the one for you!

Could be great, but a lot of considerations
on November 10, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
I purchased a new vehicle recently and decided it was a great idea to pick up a dash camera to protect my investment. Nextbase was a brand I recognized from online advertising and the advanced features on the IQ 2K sounded like a perfect fit for my needs.
There were a few things, though, that I did not realize prior to trying this unit. I am going to make sure you know all of them so you can avoid any of the frustrations I had.
First thing’s first - the installation process is not simply plug in play. In fact, I’d highly recommend taking this to a professional installer unless you feel secure in routing cables from near your rearview mirror all the way down to your car’s OBD II port or fuse box. Though a handy trim tool is included in the box, most people aren’t going to know the route this cable should take to avoid being visible or potential damage from things like closing your door.
Next, there’s the actual placement of the device. It’s pictured right behind a rear view mirror barely in your line of sight. The reality is that if you have any modern safety technology in your car it too lives behind the mirror and usually has a big plastic cover over it. Said cover blocks your ability to position the camera in a way that is unobtrusive, and i finally had to settle for doing something that would disturb the view from the passenger seat but still be useful.
Finally, there’s all the advanced technology that sells the product over others at this price point. Features like Guardian Mode and Roadwatch AI. All sound great until you realize the manufacturer hasn’t even activated them yet, and there’s a “coming soon” icon beside them. I haven’t seen any indication when they will actually be available.
Finally, one last point of contention. If you want to actually use all these features, be prepared to have a $20 a month subscription (or 9.99 for a light version) or else you have a very expensive device that doesn’t do what you thought it would.
On a positive note, the software is easy to use and the camera really does a great job of capturing everything inside and outside of the car. The g sensor is still too strong even after turning the sensitivity down and treats my exhaust sound as a collision event, but I’ve learned to just laugh when it happens.
I want to recommend the Nextbase but i think all the concerns above make it hard to broadly recommend to everyone. If you can work through all the considerations above, it could be great for you. I’m just not sure it is the one for me.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great case with details that matter
on November 1, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
I probably go through an iPhone case every couple of months because they end up getting grungy or not holding up as well as they should. I was excited to check out this case from Insignia knowing it’s a good value. Little did I know I would be pleasantly surprised to learn it had a couple of standout features that set it apart from the cases I’ve bought so far.
The first thing I would point out is that even cases from the manufacturer seem to dislike accessories attached via the MagSafe, and often times the magnetic pull is not as strong as the phone would be without the case. In my opinion this Insignia in no way interfered and my MagSafe wallet was staying attached better than normal. This is huge since I’m constantly having to make sure it stays on at the gym or in my pocket.
The next feature - again super simple but very effective, is that the buttons aren’t molded into the case and click independently. No more mushy “did it click or not?” feeling when you’re trying to mash the volume button. Instead you get a satisfying click.
Finally; the rubberized frame is pretty slide resistant. My phone usually is sliding around in the passenger seat of my car and for once I’ve not had to chase it down.
All in all I’d say it’s the simple things that sell me on a case and this one checked all my boxes and more. Highly recommended!

Surprisingly easy to type on
on August 25, 2023

I like to joke that I’m pretty fat fingered and the kind of keyboard layouts you find in these kinds of cases are usually my nemesis. I found myself pleasantly surprised at how ‘just right’ the layout and key size were considering the Fire Max isn’t a large tablet.
On a positive note, the keyboard half of the case clicks in with authority and stays magnetized to the Fire Max rather strongly, even while inside my backpack. This is great since you can feel confident that your investment is being protected well.
That brings me to the back part of the case … which i was far less impressed with than the front. The magnets for the back piece are separate; it’s under the guise of being easily removed out of convenience. On a positive note, it does have a folding easel that makes watching content easier. In normal use, though, you’re going to find it laying beside you more than it will be on the tablet. The material is scratchy and the corners make holding the tablet very uncomfortable for anything more than a couple of minutes. I think the design was well intentioned but the execution just didn’t work for me at all.
All that being said, if you anticipate using your Fire Max for productivity, the keyboard is a must have even if you have to deal with the back piece. If you don’t see yourself typing very regularly I would suggest finding a far more accommodating case in a different material.

Beauty is in the details. This beautiful, sleek, and unbelievably lightweight tablet (as thin as a pencil and weighs about a pound) is designed for on-the-go durability with an aluminum exterior and strengthened alumino-silicate glass. For your privacy and convenience, it comes with a fingerprint sensor to unlock your device, making this your all-day, every day, can't-live-without tablet.

All around great tablet with some caveats
on August 25, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
I would start by saying that this is the first time I’ve ever experienced the Fire series of tablets and with this being the 13th generation that is a long time for me not to give something a try. Fortunately the experience right out of the box was a positive one, and throughout the first couple of weeks the Fire Max won me over in many ways.
I have a lot of Alexa enabled home with a lot of smart elements from lighting to fans, as well as my home protection package. The Fire Max immediately established itself as a mobile ‘console’ with the ability to control all of these devices with a touch of a button on the main screen. This has been super handy when wanting to check on pets or just turning off the forgotten light downstairs.
As a productivity device, the Fire Max comes with a full suite of Amazon branded apps - great if you’re already using them, but maybe a learning curve if you’re used to using other operating platforms. In a bit of a surprise, there is a version of Office 365 that proved pretty handy when my work laptop was out of reach.
Battery life has been excellent even under the heavier load of playing games or watching media content. I found myself wanting to do these things more on the Fire than my phone for this reason, and the tablet stays in close reach when I’m at home.
The one thing I did find disappointing was the advertising on the Lock Screen. We see so much advertising everywhere we go that the last thing I wanted to be surprised by is constant marketing while I’m trying to unlock with the fingerprint reader. It’s possible that there is a way to turn this off that I haven’t discovered, but I would rather have opted in than have to find somewhere to opt out later. It detracted enough from my user experience to lower my rating by one star but might not bother you at all.

Incredible sound for any room
on August 23, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
After 10+ years of service from my previous sound bar, I suddenly found myself with a malfunctioning one and starting looking at options. Fortunately I had the opportunity to experience this latest product from Bose and fell in love!
The product is easy to set up right out of the box and includes everything you need for connectivity. I took advantage of the HDMI connection most modern sound bars and TVs support and after just a few settings changes on the TV I was ready to go. One advantage to this setup is that the TV remote controls the sound bar volume, meaning you don’t have to use the included remote unless you really want to.
Setup is accomplished using the Bose Music app which is pretty straightforward. One unique element is the ‘headset’ included that you plug into the sound bar for tuning purposes. Basically you sit in the positions you most frequently use when watching TV and the sound bar picks up that positioning to fine tune your audio quality. I’ve seen this done using your phone with competing products and my only concern is having to remember to dig out this extra accessory if I ever switch rooms or move.
Sound quality is why you buy Bose products and I will tell you this one does not disappoint. Audio clarity is outstanding, with built in boosting for dialogue to help make it come out to the front instead of being muddied by background sound/music. I can say without a doubt this sounds night and day better than the product it replaced and I look forward to many years of use.

Helpful accessory for your Fire
on August 23, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
After many years of using the competition, I had the opportunity to experience the current generation Amazon Fire Max 11 tablet and the stylus pen accessory. One of the first things I noticed out of the box is that the product feels solid and well made, unlike many third party pens I’ve used in the past.
Setup was very simple - all I had to do is put the included battery in and the pen was ready to go into service. It also conveniently magnetizes to the side of the Fire Max 11 and stays pretty well attached. The stylus pen works beautifully with the apps included on the table, even so much as to be able to write directly into the search bar and find websites. It also has multiple levels of pressure sensitivity in case you’re artistic and want to get into the more creative side of things.
In practical use, I found the stylus to be a great addition to the Fire Max when taking notes at work. The handwriting recognition on the tablet works very well for with the pen so I seldom found myself having to make corrections. Crossing out the text with the pen makes it erase, which makes it quite intuitive when you’re trying to keep up in a meeting. After a short time i didn’t even have to think about how I was using it.
All in all a great accessory and one I’d recommend if you want to get the most use out of your Fire.

Premium Home or Small Office Color Laser
on July 7, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
My previous color laser printer was on its last legs when the opportunity to pick up the HP Laserjet Pro 4301 came up, and I would say the timing was quite serendipitous.
One of the things I appreciate most about this model is the completely seamless ability to print wirelessly - and INSTANTLY - from my mobile device. I print a lot of shipping labels for my home business that are generated in email, and they spit out faster than I can walk across the room to the printer.
Setup, outside of one very important detail, was very easy and the HP Smart app makes accessing all of the device functions quite easy. Where I had to remove a point is the complete lack of instructions for where one finds the admin passcode. Without that, configuring the printer is an ordeal that will make you think you’ve done something wrong or lost something from the box. I’m attaching a photo to save you this pain!
The touch screen is far larger than my last printer and is very responsive. Manual feeding for both printing and scanning work extremely well without jamming, and with the speed you’re able to print it would be ideal for a small business with consistent printing volume. You’ll also be able to set up individual user access for each employee.
All in all, if it weren’t for the initial setup pains I would absolutely give this HP a 5 and I do highly recommend it

Versatile, powerful and intelligent!
on June 15, 2023
Posted by: CPWoody
I recently moved into a home with two floors and realized there was value to having a second vacuum upstairs to help keep things in better order. In shopping for something new, I already had heard amazing things about Dyson cordless vacs and they were at the top of my list to try out. I have two cats - which means I have two never ending problems: hair, and litter. Short of glitter, cat litter is the most annoying thing to be tracked around a home and it seems never to stop.
How surprised was I when I opened the box to the Dyson Outsize Cordless Vacuum and saw the attachments were very pet focused! There are special hair removal vanes in the main attachment that keep hair from jamming up the beater brush, as well as a special anti tangle screw design to the smaller head that is perfect for stairs and corners.
One particular feature I like is how intelligent the motor is. It constantly knows if you’re on carpet or hardwood and the dirt level of where you are cleaning. I made a very big mess the first day and without having to change any settings the Dyson spun up and worked flawlessly. Just pull the trigger and off it goes until the job is done! The battery life is more than sufficient for me to get all the way around the loft and my other vac is getting pretty lonely from lack of use now that the Outsize is within reach.
The unit is extremely easy to assemble and clean, has a wall mount that holds attachments, and is a breeze to clean. Bottom line - this is easily a must buy for anyone who has to deal with clean up for pets, kids, or themselves!

Create, control, and champion your playstyle with the new Razer Basilisk V3—the quintessential ergonomic gaming mouse for customized performance. With 10+1 programmable buttons, a dual-mode tilt scroll wheel, and a heavy dose of Razer Chroma™ RGB, it's time to light up the competition your way.

Is it normal for this mouse to make clicking noises when the computer boots up? It clicks as if I were toggling the scroll mode, but I'm not touching the mouse.

I don’t know about whether or not it’s normal but mine does it too. Didn’t even put two and two together until i read your question. It sounds like the clutch on the scroll wheel engaging and disengaging as the power to the USB port changes.
