Good value for basic home wifi

One Saturday my old router finally kicked the bucket. Since I only have a Roku for TV service without wi-fi I've got nothing. Did some quick browsing and came across this one. I have been a big fan of Linksys/Cisco for years so this was my first choice.
Plenty of throughput for both streaming and using my tablet at the same time. For the price range it's great. I love that you can set up a guest login as well so you don't have to change your password every time you let someone login.
Setup is about as easy as you can make it. Just pop in the CD and follow the prompts. There is an option for more advanced users but most will probably do just fine with the CD.
The only con with this router is signal strength in a crowded environment. If you live in an apartment complex with several other routers in the same building you can get quite a bit of interference. I mostly noticed it when playing games on my tablet. If you are in a single family house you should be fine. Not sure what the max range is but I have no dead spots in my 2bd apartment.
Overall I like it. No major complaints and like I said above, I've been a fan of the brand(s) for years. Maybe not for the hardcore gamer or super hd streaming but works fine with my Roku, tablet and laptop.

When in the future more features are added, will I be able to update my existing Home somehow or will it require buying a whole new unit?
Similar to the Chromecast, updates will be automatically downloaded to the Google Home. There may be occasion when a major update requires the user to download and install using the app. For the most part it will update itself with new features as they are added. You should not have to buy a new device.

I have elderly parents and would like to consider this for them to remind them to take medication and contact uber/lyft for transportation. Any advice please?
Unfortunately, the Google Home does not support reminders at this point. The work around for that would be to add events to the Google Calendar which it could read off when requested. It doesn't just announce the event without being asked what is on the calendar. Since it only currently works with a single account and the account's main calendar it could be an issue if there are two people using it. The Google assistant on a smart phone supports the reminder feature though. So that may be a solution. I'm sure the feature will be coming but it currently is not available.

I have backed up a defective linksys router with the backup configuration it had. Will it import correctly into a new linksys router?
Probably not unless it is the same model and software version. Backups are generally only good for restoring to the original device. Trying to install on a different one may cause strange behavior or failure. If it loads at all.
