Well built case to protect your iPhone

Speck Presidio Pro Case for iPhone X and Xs
This case is definitely a sturdy case. The case is well made and fit my iPhone Xs like a glove. In fact, that was my only tiny complaint. It fits so well, that it is very difficult to get on and off. Although, once it is on, not sure why you would take it off. The sides and corners are much stiffer than other cases, explaining the difficulty in installation. However, that stiffness also helps protect you valuable phone. All the holes and button bumps are in the correct locations and work very well. As with other cases, they expose that stupid mute button on the side that gets accidently activated, although the case does help to prevent accidents. The inside of the case is a nice soft fabric that shouldn’t scratch anything on your phone. The back and sides of the phone have a nice rubbery feel that helps get a good grip on your device. The front of the phone is also protected some from a fall, as the edge of the case wraps around the front of the case. I have not tried the drop test, and do not intend to do so, but if I do happen to drop my phone, I feel it will be very well protected.

Tricky install, but worth it
on August 6, 2019

WeBoost Home MultiRoom Cell Signal Booster
I live in a rural area not real close to cell towers. Not horrible, but not great, either. I got the WeBoost Cell Signal Booster to try to improve the connectivity. I received the kit a few days ago, and I have set it up temporarily until I can more properly install it. I have not really fine-tuned it yet, waiting for final placement to do that, but the preliminary results look promising.
The kit comes with everything I needed to install - at least for my testing. Inside antenna, outside antenna, mounting hardware and hex key for both, signal amplifier with power supply, two 15’ coax cables, one 30’ coax cable, a short flat connector cable to use through a window or door, and instructions.
Although the instructions are well laid out and clear, it was still a tricky install, even if a temporary one. The most difficult part was aligning the outside antenna. There is one indicator light that shows errors, but nothing to show signal strength. It’s really too bad, as the process with an iPhone is not ideal. You need to put the phone in Field Test Mode by entering *3003#12345#* and hitting Dial. Tap on Serving Cell Meas and look for rsrp0. Every few seconds the display refreshes, and the line where rsrp0 moves. A less negative number is better than a more negative one, so -95 is better than -115. By a bunch, I guess. Anyway, you need to power off and power on the signal amplifier after each antenna move, and turn off and on cellular each time. Also, your WiFi should be turned off. There is an app called OpenSignal that will point to the nearest tower.
My signal hasn’t changed by very much, but I think it is because I still haven’t tweaked the outside antenna properly. My reason for not giving this 5 stars is not because of the signal, but because there is no easy way to determine the proper direction and elevation to point the antenna due to no meter or sequence of lights. Otherwise, it is well built and comes with most everything needed to install, except maybe a ladder!

Easy setup, limited configuration options
on November 29, 2018

This is a review of the Sengled Element Color Plus A19 LED (3 pack) with hub. Since I already had (and reviewed) the Sengled Element Classic A19 Smart LED Light Bulbs (3 pack) with hub, it may appear that this was an unnecessary purchase, as I already have a hub from that kit. However, I have that first setup at a vacation home, and I wanted something for a spare room at our home that has a color issue. No matter what color white bulbs I put in there, the color looks terrible. Yes, I know it is the pinkish walls, but everything is so darn rosy in that room, I can’t stand it. So anyway, I got this similar setup but with the full color bulbs. Woohoo!
So, on to the review. As with the other kit, installation is a breeze. The bulbs are already paired with the hub, so installation is easy. The hub needs to be connected to you network via ethernet, but can be changed to wireless if necessary. I left mine wired. Since I have another hub at another location, I was curious how they would work together. I was happy to find that it was just as I wanted. Both hubs can be added to the app on the same account, and appear in different rooms. Very easy to switch back and forth between the two homes. I just need to make sure there are no duplicate room names - Master Bedroom in both locations, for instance.
So, bulbs added and configured, now to setup a scene for the effect I want in this color challenged room. Create scene, give it a name, select bulbs - all three in my case. Now, set up devices - brightness and either color temperature (Edison, Warm, Neutral, Cool, and Daylight) or pick a color from a color picker with about a bazillion colors. See included screen shot. Great, except if you want a particular color for all three bulbs. There is no way to select all three and configure them. Each has to be done separately, and if you are picking from the color picker, it is impossible. Either allow all to be configured at once, or make a copy paste function. Anyway, got the colors as close to each other as I could, but didn’t like the results, so went back to trying the Color Temperature of Neutral and will live with it.
Plusses - Multiple hubs on same account works. Works with Alexa, Google, and IFTTT.
Minuses - Unable to accurately configure color of bulbs beyond basic Color Temperature adjustments. No scheduling option built in.

The Streamlabs water monitor gives you the peace of mind that your home is protected from water damage. It attaches easily to your existing plumbing, with no pipe cutting required, and uses ultrasonic technology to measure and detect changes in the flow of the water in your pipes. It's Wi-Fi enabled, so you can check on your home anytime, anywhere using the smartphone app. And real-time leak alerts will notify you if you need to take action. The Streamlabs water monitor is also part of your complete smart home, integrating with both Nest and Alexa systems.

Streamlabs Water Monitor
on November 2, 2018
Posted by: JimS
from Oregon
The Streamlabs Water Monitor is meant to be installed on your main water supply entering your home. I strongly recommend verifying you have a good install location before purchasing this product. It requires WiFi service and 110 volt AC outlet at the install location. It needs to be protected from the weather. Although the installation steps are clear and simple, the actual install is a bit tricky.
I did have a suitable location, and proceeded to begin the install. WiFi was good at the location, so I plugged in the device, downloaded the application to my phone, and got it connected to WiFi. Next, attach it to the pipe using provided zip ties. Finally, attempt to determine the type of pipe it is attached to. Nothing. Removed device, cleaned pipe yet again. Same issue. Removed device, replaced sensor pads on device (they give you spare pads and ties), used sandpaper on the pipe to really get it shiny, and had same results. I called support and left message. No response, so I called them the next day. I got a call back a couple of hours later and spoke with support who had me press on the monitor in order to get the pads pressed firmly on the pipe, and tighten the zip ties. It would start to identify the pipe, then after a few minutes, it lost the connection. I finally applied a couple of clamps and left it this way until they send me more zip ties and pads.
Once connected and pipe identified, you need to turn off all water flow so the device can determine what no flow looks like, then you need to turn the water back on and flush a toilet or run a sink for a little obit so it can determine what flowing water looks like. Then it is configured.
Within the app you have the ability to see how much water has been used today, and eat the Mode to HOME or AWAY. It appears that if you have multiple monitors, they would all appear on this page. Tapping on one of thee locations brings up details for that monitor. This shows the current flow of water in Gallons Per Minutes, and a graph showing the last minutes water flow. Also shown is the room temperature - where the device is located. There are also charts showing the amount used by the day, month, and year, pulse a Comparative Usage comparing todays and yesterday. It is unclear to me at this time what to do with all this information.
But now we get to the good part - letting you know if there is an leak or not. This is set up by device, in case you have multiple monitors. With the Home Mode Leak Alert, you can set it up to learn your normal water usage, and left you if it eats out of the ordinary. This takes 7 days to perform. This is an optional step that was labeled as Beta. I’m a sucker, so I am letting it do its thing. While waiting for this to be configured, you can set up alerts manually. You can set up both Slow Leak Alerts and Major Leak Alerts. First, the Slow Leak Alert will notify you of slow leaks if the flow is over either 0.5 gpm or 1.0 gpm, your choice, and for 5,10,15, 20, 30 or 60 minutes, again your choice. Major Leak Alert gives you a choice of 2, 4, or 6 gpm for longer than 2.5,5,10,15, 20, or 30 minutes. The Away Mode Leak will notify you if any water flows while you are away. The alerts come through on the phone if you are not in the application, otherwise the app shows the alert. Apparently you can’t set up text alerts.
Smart home integration is currently lacking a bit. You can connect it to both Nest and Amazon Alexa. With Alexa, you can say you are home or away - that is it. With Nest, you link the Home and Away on each other, so when one is change, the other also changes. I have the Alexa connected, but not my Nest thermostat, as I don’t want that particular connection. Some other possible integrations would be with SmartThings or IFTTT or, Stringify.
One feature I believe is missing is an option to exclude certain times in the Away mode. This would be so that an automatic sprinkler can be ignored, and you aren’t notified every time it goes off. Also text alerts would be really sweet.
Overall, I am happy with my monitor and am looking forward to more features to come.

Good beginning lighting kit, but limited expansion
on July 8, 2018

This combination of three LED light bulbs and hub is a good starting kit for home automation. The bulbs come preconfigured to be pre-paired to the hub, making installation very simple. After installing the hub by connecting it to your LAN, you can then connect it to your WiFi and move the hub to a more convenient position. The app (Element Home) allows you to rename the lights, and put them into Rooms, where they can be controlled as a group. You can also set schedules, and have a separate Wake Up Time. Pretty basic, really. I was interested in the bulbs ability to be used with Alexa. I added the Sengled skill to my Echos, and began search for devices. It found the 3 bulbs, but not the Room, as expected. I then created a group in Alexa app and was able to control the lights both individually and as a group using my voice.
However, I have a lot of smart home devices already, so I reset the bulbs ( power off/on 10 times quickly does the trick - I use a bathroom fixture with lots of sockets and a manual switch to reset them all at once) and proceeded to add them to my SmartThings hub. They pair fine, and I can control them using the SmartThings app, but I want to use voice, so I deleted the old bulbs from Alexa and had her relearn my devices. No matter what I have tried, using two different hubs at 2 different locations, I have been unable to get them discovered. Maybe it’s me or my setup, but I couldn’t get it to work. So, back to the reset and reinstall onto the Sengled hub. It was super simple to add them back, as you can use the camera on your phone to read the barcode on each bulb. Since then, it has worked flawlessly.
One nice feature of these bulbs is you can dim them clear down to 1% and there is no noticeable flicker. Overall, I am happy with these lights, but wish they would integrate with Alexa and SmartThings better. Also, the hub is limited in what devices can connect to it.

Nice sounding buds that work well blocking noise
on June 6, 2018
Posted by: JimS
from Oregon
I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of my new Sony WF-SP700N Noise Cancelling earbuds before a 3 week trip to Europe, where I could properly test out their noise cancelling capabilities. Unfortunately, I received my headphones just before I returned from that trip, so I haven’t had time to properly test them in a noisy jet environment. I was able to simulate loud, continuous noises I think are similar in my shop, using a combination of a dust collection system, while also having a radio playing in the background. More on the results later.
The case is also a charger with battery for the buds. It is of a reasonable size, but too large to put into most pockets. My buds came with only a little charge, so the first thing I did was plug the charger into a USB port (cable micro USB cable included), and installed the buds into the charger. The charger has labels to say which bud goes where, as do the buds themselves. R goes to R, L to L. No brainer, although you sort of have to wiggle the buds to get them in, as the ear thingy looks to be in the way, but just keep wiggling and they fit great. The charger also charges the buds when not connected to USB. Battery life looks real good so far.
The fit and finish of these earbuds is excellent. The looks are what they are, foreign objects sticking out of your ears, but these look no worse than most, and better than many. They fit my ears perfectly right out of the box, and although there are several other ear cushions and another set of rubbery ear thingies of a different style, I haven’t needed to even try them out. It was awkward inserting the buds into my ears at first, but once I got the proper rotation of the bud into the ear, the rubbery thing slide right into the slot in your ear. Once they were inserted properly, they were the most comfortable set of buds I have yet worn. They also are not easily removed, a nice feature that keeps them in place. I haven’t tried any real strenuous activity like running, but working in the yard and such has shown excellent comfort and the tendency to stay in place and not fall out.
Connecting the buds to my iPhone was a bit tricky at first, as the buds are powered on when removed from the charger. To start the pairing process, you need to press the button on the LEFT bud for about 7 seconds, but after a few seconds, you are audio prompted that the buds have “Powered Off”. Keep holding the button and in a few more seconds the pairing message is audio prompted and you can pair to your phone. However, the Power Off actually powers off the RIGHT bud, so you have to press the button on the RIGHT bud to power it back on. Once paired, reconnects are fast and automatic. Switching between devices is a little tricky because of this quirk, but it's not too bad.
The range to my phone was very good, at least 30 feet. I never got a dropout or stutter. Other buds I have tried will often have drop offs while moving around.
The app that you install on your phone allows you to adjust the sound parameters of the buds.
These include an 5 band equalizer with 8 presets and off, plus a setting for Priority on Sound Quality or Priority on Stable Connection.
These buds are also capable of answering calls, but I have not had opportunity to try that feature at all.
Now for the unscientific results of the noise cancelling features. There is a definite difference in the three settings, Noise Canceling (On), Voice Mode, and Normal Mode (Off). In Off Mode, the only reduction in any noise is minimal, as expected. When the Voice Mode is activated, the voices on the radio come through well, but sound tinny when no music is playing on the buds. This is due to the lower harmonics being cut off, I imagine. When Noise Canceling is activated, the voices almost disappear under music, but are still clear with silence. With the dust collector also running, Off did almost nothing, as expected. Voice mode let the radio voices come through the music and the dust collector. Noise Canceling still allowed some of the voices through but reduced the collector drastically. I could reduce the volume of my music to a lower level and still hear it. I was impressed. Now to test them on my next flight.

Floss Before Oscillating
on May 3, 2018
Posted by: JimS
from Oregon
The Dyson TP04 Air Purifier is an impressive column, and yet blends in fairly well into its environment. It is approximately 41” high with a base of about 8” circumference. It comes almost completely assembled, except for the filters and covers. The design of these is clever in that the two sets are not only interchangeable, but can be installed either direction up - there is no way to mess it up. It does take a little bit to get the covers snapped on, but it was clear when they were properly inserted.
The unit comes with a small remote that would be very easy to lose if Dyson hadn’t designed it to affix to the top of the unit via magnets. Once you connect it to your WiFi, and download the app, you will probably not be reaching for that remote too often. Especially if you also enable the Alexa skill to control your unit. I have place my unit in Automatic mode, allowing it to control the speed and duration of the device itself. There is a graph in the app that shows the environmental conditions for the past several hours, and a weekly roll up of the daily conditions. You can see how the unit came on when the air quality declined, and turned off when it improved. There is also a virtual remote in the app you can use.
Now for the explanation of the strange title. When I first set the device up, I tried all the buttons on the remote. The one that makes the unit oscillate only made it go a short distance one direction, then pause and click, until an error on the display screen of the device showed an error. Nothing in the manual, so I called support. Although it took several minutes (10 maybe?), I finally got to talk with a wonderful lady who helped me. She ran through the list of troubleshooting steps, all which where obvious and had already been done (power off/on, check for obstruction or tape the needs to be removed), until she mention that a coworker had mentioned a possible fix. I was to run a length of dental floss around the gap between the base and the rotating top. As she put me on hold to get one of the devices to look at, I tried the floss trick, and after a couple of good back and forth, it would go part way, then stop. After doing this a couple of more times, it now goes back and for the flawlessly. This should be in the faq’s, as well as the manual.

Router has potential, but too many issues for me.
on April 8, 2018
Posted by: JimS
from Oregon
The Norton Core WiFi router is designed to protect most of your network devices from outside threats, not just PC’s and Mac’s. The box (which is rather odd looking) is installed between your internal network and the internet. It replaces the functionality of whatever was doing DHCP, NAT, port forwarding,
Although my DSL modems does have the ability to go into bypass or bridge mode, I was never able to get it to pass through the request for PPPoE credentials. I finally gave up and left things as double NATed. Another issue is that the IP Adress range that it uses to issue address from is not adjustable. It uses an entire Class B range, 172.16.x.x, with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. That is unusual in of itself, but the addresses it issues seemed rather random. I ran a network scan, and discovered that the Core appears to create a new virtual interface and assign an address of 172.16.x.1 and issues the address of 172.16.x 2 to any device. However, each device still gets the entire mask of 255.255.0.0. This is a configuration that I have never heard or seen before. It appears to work OK, however.
The app used to manage the Core allows you to add people and add devices to them. You can pause the Internet for individual devices, all assigned to a particular person, or all devices. You can also set up blocking and time limit rules for the same groupings.
After having this device installed for about a week, I have unfortunately uninstalled it. It was causing too many weird anomalies that I could not resolve without removing it. I am rating this as a 3 star, as I think it may work for many if not most people, but for at least my network, it caused more issues than it was worth.

Works well but install might be difficult
on March 8, 2018
Posted by: JimS
from Oregon
The Bitdefender Box 2 is a product that is designed to protect all of the devices in your home, including home automation gadgets and other usually not secure appliances. In this regard, it works very well. Getting there was a challenge.
As with most devices these days, the documentation leaves a lot to be desired. There is a single page, double sided brochure that has the steps required to install the Box. Installation of an App is required, Bitdefender Central, which I proceeded to do on my iPhone. You are stepped through activating the Box, and then it is time to decide how you are going to connect the box to your network. They have 2 scenarios, neither of which really explain what is happening, and neither fitting my use. After several calls to the tech support, and determining what this box is expecting, and what it is providing, i was able to get it installed. Here is what I learned.
My network consists of a DSL modem, providing DHCP to my internal network. I have a switch that then feeds other devices, plus 3 Apple Access Points. The Box creates its own network with DHCP. The box must be between the modem and the switch. The modem still needs to provide DHCP, but is only needed to give an address to the external port of the Box. This means that everything internal to your network gets a new address, any forwarding rules need to be recreated, and any non-DHCP devices have to be manually readdressed. Also everything is double NAT’ed to the internet. If you didn’t understand any of this, and you have anything but a simple network, you may have difficulty in getting this installed. It also can provide its own wireless network, but I did not test that.
It has now discovered 66 devices that it is protecting. For IOS and OSX and I assume other operating systems, you can install software that will also protect your device while off your network. The Bitdefender Central software shows all activity, how many threats that have been blocked, and devices that need attention. It discovered that a device is vulnerable to a Denial of Service attack that I assume it is now protecting, but it isn’t clear. It has also blocked 110 links to suspicious URLs from embedded graphics in emails that my wife gets. So I guess it is doing its job.
Overall, a decent product once the original installation is correct.

Works even on a really old opener!
By JimS from Oregon
I tried using a MyQ kit from Chamberlain as that is what I installed at home. My shop had openers that were too old to work with it. I found these and saw they would work. Easy to configure and add to Wink hub. I actually installed them by the push buttons on the wall that are for opening the doors, and wired them parallel to these switches. No need to get out a ladder.

I thought I was reviewing the garage door opener that did work on my old door opener. I had to return this one. I do have 2 others of this type that I am very happy with, just not for older openers.
