Best wireless noise cancelling headphones around
on October 24, 2016
Posted by: OhDickey
So, I've had a few sets of cans lately. I've had the Beats Studio 2.0 Wireless. I've had the Bose QuietComfort 35s. I've had the Beats Solo 3.0 Wireless. And finally I settled on the brand new Sony 1000X.
First and foremost, the fit and finish on these headphones is phenomenal. I have yet to see another set on the market in this price range (sans Senheiser) that can touch Sony on build quality. It hits all the markets. The plastic keeps the weight down. The metal head band gives an air of sturdiness. The leather ear cans give really nice tactile feel. And the leather ear pads are well balanced in between firm and soft.
Next, the noise cancellation on these is off the charts. I loved the NC in the QC35s, but this is another level in my view. The NC, here, is much better at blocking out conversation. Can any headphone truly block out voices? It's almost impossible. But the 1000x is a veritable isolation chamber with how well it does in that regard. There is that ever present faint hissing sound, but it's hardly noticeable.
I particularly like the ability to raise my right hand to the right ear piece and cup it and allow for conversation to take place. What a fantastic little addition to the cans. Further, I've had good luck so far with the ability to filter through voice (noticed this working well in a subway and on a train so far). It's not perfect, but it works well when the voices are somewhat clear.
The comfort level on these cans has been great. It blows the two Beats products out of the water. The Solo 3s, with the really freaking awesome W1 chip, just did not ever feel good on my ears. But that's me. I do not do well with on-ears (especially with tighter headbands like the Beats). The QC35s are probably the most comfortable headphone on the planet, but these really do come close. I'd give the edge to the Bose, but I think the 1000x beats it in just about every other area imaginable. I've worn them for extended time periods and I've never once gotten ear fatigue from them. That's a testament to the time and effort that Sony put in developing these.
Battery life has been as advertised so far. Maybe a bit more. Getting around 20 hours or so a charge when used wirelessly. I have yet to ever use the cable since I have an iPhone 7+ (and, thus, no headphone jack). The Beats Solo 3 bests these, here, but only due to the utterly amazing W1 chip. That somehow enabled the Beats to get 40 or so hours of charge. Something I could never even get to since I returned the headphones after about 30 hours of use (I think the battery said it was only half way drained!). But I'm not going to dock the Sony for "only" 20 hours. That's still more than enough time for most any flight (and air port waiting),. And much more time than I'd need for my weekly commute.
Finally, the sound quality on these is really good. This is where these shine. They are not too base heavy like the Beats. They don't sound tinny and harsh like the Bose. The mids are utterly superb. Easily (easily!) the best out of that group. I think that the soundstage is also the best in the group as well. I have no trouble picking out various instruments and other bits and pieces. I think my biggest disappointment with the Bose QC35s was the overall sound. It just sounded harsh to me (the mids were also completely muddled out somehow).
Is this worth the $50 premium over the Bose and the $100 premium over the Beats? Absolutely. It's no question to me. This may be the easiest choice I have had to make for headphones in a long time. I'm glad that I saw these were available (I purchased them late last week on the first day that my local Best Buy had them in stock) before the return period on the Beats was up (yay for 30 day no questions returns!).
Highly, highly recommended.

Great buy when on sale.

So, the price on these has dropped quite a bit. A while back, these started out at $370. I had no interest in spending $370 on a pair of wireless Beats. I had tried them on back then and they were very comfortable, but it just wasn't happening.
Fast forward to the 50th Anniversary sale. Best Buy had these on sale for $199. Now, at that price, I was very interested. There's something about the range of $150-250 that is the sweet spot for me with headphones. I cringe at paying higher and I tend to be disappointed with cheaper headphones (not counting earbuds in this since the Jaybird X2s and the new Bose Soundsport Wireless headphones are both solid -- particularly the Bose -- for working out and activities).
But I digress. I ended up purchasing these in Titanium (although I think I may make an even exchange for a sexy Matte Black pair). Picked them up a day or so after they were ready. Immediately you notice how well the packaging is. This is pretty meaningless, but the display is quite nice. The hard case they come with is really quite solid and seems to protect them well (I also can stick a pair of earbuds in the case as well as a charging cable) during travel.
Putting them on, I immediately remembered just how comfortable the headphones were from when I tried them on ages ago. The ear covers are soft and plush and the headband is just the right amount of snug. A lot of work went into this. I have what you'd call a big head, and I notice no pinching or overt tightness at all. These remain comfortable after hours of listening (I've done upwards of four hours in one sitting, now). The build quality seems to be decent. Solid plastic and metal hinges. There were some old complaints about this, but I haven't noticed anything concerning yet.
The sound quality on the headphones is solid. A perfect fit for the $150-250 range. Obviously the sound profile with the Beats typically is best for bass-heavy tracks. Hip hop and rap sound exquisite coming from these headphones. Heavy rock does as well. However, I've not noticed much of a washing out of the highs and mids. I still get a fairly full sound profile on jazz tracks and indie rock tracks that I wasn't really anticipating with these. It's a pleasant sound for sure. Audiophiles probably will be able to pick the sound apart a lot more than I can, but I am very much pleased with what I have heard thus far.
With all of that said, I would only recommend these in the $200-250 range when on sale. I cannot picture paying $370 for these. Nothing in the package would justify that cost. But it appears that the $250 price point may be a fairly permanent switch for Best Buy (and likely other retailers other than Apple Stores). At that price? I think it's a very good buy. There is enough offered to the user in terms of build quality, comfort, and price to justify paying somewhere in the range of $200-250.

the best wireless ANC headphones you'll hate
By bd43274
these headphones are fantastic...and they're also infuriating. sony has managed to make a great sounding pair of bluetooth ANC headphones with some really useful features, but somehow they managed to ruin the party with poor hinge design. i'll explain.
pros:
-sound, sound, sound. these come well tuned right out of the package, no external EQ necessary. not for bass-heads, but certainly not lacking either. powerful, punchy, and crisp. i recommend the Gladiator soundtrack, track 3 'The Battle' for testing. you won't regret it.
-comfort. not bad at all, comparable to probably their biggest direct competitor, the Bose QC35.
-ANC. noise cancelling *almost* on par to the QC35, which to say, it is pretty good.
-intuitive touch features. these are actually really handy and easy to use. my favorite is probably the 'hand over right cup' to immediately attenuate the sound and pipe in the outside world. very cool.
-battery life. again, on par with the QC35, which is a respectable 19-20 hours, with no cable and ANC on.
cons:
no minor cons...see below.
deal breakers:
-hinge creak. wow. not so bad at first, but after about a week, every movement of your head or jaw causes an audible creak/click. barely hear it during loud music, but put on something soft and it is impossible to ignore.
long story short, only you can decide if the hinge creak bothers you. it didn't bother me at first, but now i can't *not* hear it. for an MSRP of $399, this type of thing is inexcusable. i will of course be exchanging my pair in hopes that this is just a defective pair, but i have a friend who is experiencing the same thing with theirs. we shall see..

I have absolutely none of the hinge creek you seem to have. Sounds like you got a bad unit. Have not seen that referenced in any review online, either.

With no wires in the way, Bose SoundSport Wireless Sports Earbuds keep you moving with powerful audio. Perfect for exercise and running with a sweat and weather resistant design and StayHear+ tips designed for comfort and stability. The Tile app makes your headphones easy to find if they ever go missing.

Why does it state that it's coming soon and currently not available when I purchased a pair from Best Buy not too long ago? No Best Buy in the whole country has a pair?

Bose has had an issue where the headsets have been defective and have been glitchy when getting wet with sweat. Apparently, Bose has created a fix and now has quite a bit of backlog. They have been replacing user headphones (mine were just sent back for this) with the updated design.

What is the max. range available (feet, yards, etc.) between the BOSE Soundsport wireless headphones and the Bluetooth device that their paired with?

In the gym, I get easily over 30 feet (I tend to leave my phone on a machine when I am going to grab paper towels and cleaner to wipe down).

When will this product be available?

Bose currently has a backlog on these for sure. I don't know if you've looked around on the internet, but they have had an issue with sweat and causing these headphones to lose connection or stutter a bit. My black pair had this issue. Bose ended up updating the design to prevent this. Apparently, they completely solved the problem and are now replacing defective units under warranty. They have a 6-week turn around time for replacements and, unfortunately, it appears that there is very little retail stock right now with the updated design.
