Excellent dual-camera rig for ride sharing drivers
on January 27, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Rexing V2 is unique as it offers a front and rear view for inside/outside capture of video as would benefit those with liability risks both inside and outside their vehicle while operating, such as ridesharing drivers or taxi operators.
The Rexing v2 is well built, comes with good mounting gear for the windshield and car power adapter. A hard-wiring kit for permanent installation into the car’s power system is offered separately by Rexing.
The cameras work independently but can record simultaneously in 1080p/30fps and store to a UHS-I microSD card. If y9ou opt to record from only one camera, 2160p (4K UHD) recording is supported at 24 FPS. I assume eventually the “unicorn” model will support dual 4K24/60, but simultaneous recording to media might be the bottleneck here.
Video quality in my testing was good, stable, and color reproduction was good for a camera of this caliber and price range. Rexing is regularly lauded on dash cam forums and social communities as the camera of choice.
The V2 seems to be the top-of-the-line choice, offering dual camera capabilities with no feature compromise.

The M50X Legend Lives wire-free!!!
on December 22, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
These are incredible. A few "audiophile" buddies of mine swear by the AT M50 and M50x's - And after trying theirs, Ive been a bit ruined on headphones... They made my current over-ear headphones seem artificial, and lacking in mid clarity... But I put up with it because my former cans were wireless/wired switchable. Something I didn't think I'd ever see from a purist like the M50x... And if I did, surely it would be a compromised sound quality being wireless.
I was proven wrong with the M50xBTs - Not only is this EXACTLY what I'd hoped for in getting the perfect pair of wireless headphones, but the folks at AudioTechnica refused to compromise on audio quality in going wireless. These support APT-X and AAC codecs, and are finely tuned to be consistent (at least to my ears) between wired and wireless experiences... But still offer a wired experience when charge depletes, or a copper transfer is desired by the user.
Speaking of charge, they're rated at 40h of battery life... Ive only used them for a week when I had time, and I've yet to deplete them.
Absolutely perfect. Worth every penny. It gives me hope for the world when high-quality, uncompromised products are still available.

Good true wireless buds - Sweet spot for the price
on December 22, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Finally - True Wireless headphones that work well, sound decent, and deliver a useable set up, including pretty good battery life, without breaking the bank.
Sometimes its not the big names that make the best stuff - Especially when audio quality is subjective and comfort and fit matter more than driver range for most mainstream listeners.
JLAB makes a number of wired and wireless audio products, and as much as their product range is diverse, so goes their audio quality. Fortunately these buds sound pretty good, with decent clarity and some bass - But these are NOT Bose or Harman-Kardon level... Good enough for runners or casual listeners who just wan decent streaming quality.
In my testing, the buds stayed connected well, and connected well to each other, I had a few mishaps on an airplane, but those environments tend to be a problem for many true wireless products, so not really a fair test.
The charging case recharged them fully for 3-4 full charges throughout my 4 days of testing - one full case charge lasted my entire 3-day business trip and flights to/from. The buds fit well in their case and I didn't have an issue some reported online with fit in the case preventing proper charge for one or both buds.
All in all these are IMPRESSIVE for the price, and great for general use - Id highly recommend these for non-audiophiles

This is such a simple device... Why didn't they think of this before?
Samsung nailed it with the simplistic form factor of this SmartThing... Small enough to go into the small pocket on jeans of a child/tween where it wont irritate them, but also big enough not to get lost easily.
My wife carries it in her purse to keep it from being lost. Helps locate it throughout the house even!

Nice bulbs with lots of uses. Unintuitive app.
on November 23, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981

These SengLED Element bulbs are fantastic as regular LED bulbs. The color change function is a nice add on and leads to fun decorating and setting a mood in an all-SengLED-lit room. The app and controls however leave a bit to be desired.
The bulbs are very bright and seem to be competitive with the name-brand bulbs with similar features, and enrolling bulbs with the hub was a breeze. Very simple.
The fallout happens when you want to customize rooms, change configurations. Or even switch between room-based, and individual bulb customizations... The app is very low quality and clicking through this seems more like back-end config than UI. Very administrative, not user-focused. Also I have yet to figure out how to integrate into Google Home, and I’m not an Alexa user.

Linksys has finally nailed the "Mesh Network"...
on November 17, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I've tried and reviewed 3 different "Velop" systems from Linksys now. They were all excellent. This one is the opus.
I've evaluated roughly a dozen or so "Mesh" and "Extender" networks in the last few years, this being the new trend as homes get larger and WiFi requires additional ubiquity and devices in the home grow to outnumber the people residing in them...
The Velop Tri-Band (Gen 2) is on a whole new level. Mostly because Linksys realized something about its users... That only the primary node of the network needs to sit on a shelf/at a desk/on a surface at all.
The Linksys Velop system has performed perfectly as a replacement for other mesh systems I've tried in the past. Unlike other systems, Linksys still allows for advanced settings, such as IP address range for the internal network, and the ability to set advanced functions, such as port forwarding. Some of it's competitors were more basic, but by no means is the Linksys set up wizard, or the mobile app complicated.
The setup process was so simple that end-to-end it took about 8 minutes. That includes unboxing, plugging in the main node, powering them all on, and setting up the network nodes with settings. Its extremely intuitive and easy in the app. Linksys has hit a home run here.
Coverage wise the devices work well. Performance is much better on these new Tri-Band devices than on their "Dual-Band counterparts, so they'll use a special "backhaul" bandwidth at 5GHz range to control and connect the mesh. In the end, performance was excellent even at the furthest reaches of my 2500-sqft home, as the Tri-Band version might be a differentiator for higher speed use cases (I have 200x10 basic service with Spectrum) or larger homes nearing the stated "4500 sqft" mark. One of my applied use cases for this system is keeping my 5GHz network strong throughout the house as I'm now streaming in 4K and 1080p to 3 unique televisions and both Google ChromeCast and AppleTV units facilitating the streaming. Gone are the days on my traditional wireless network where the remote apps or the streams themselves would cut out or degrade quality, as they just weren't close enough to the single router to get a signal sufficient for their bandwidth demands... This particular premium mesh network eliminated this issue completely, while other competitive mesh networks improved, but didn't fully resolve the issue.
The network also behaves nicely with smart home devices - Other mesh networks gave me problems with my smart doorbell, robot vacuum, and smart thermostat with regard to staying connected. With the Velop systems there appears to be enough of a network abstraction that the devices properly see it as ONE NETWORK and the nodes don't seem to fight over connection to their nearer devices as was the case in other systems. I can't recommend this enough, and if cost is an issue, check out the dual-band counterpart as its 80% of the performance with 100% of the features.

Excellent Mesh System with Excellent Mobile App

Coverage wise the devices work well. Performance isn't peak, as these aren't the "tri-band" devices, so they'll use bandwidth within the standard 2.4 nd 5GHz ranges to control and connect the mesh. This will have a slight (not significant for most uses) performance impact compared to a Trim-Band mesh, where a third "backhaul" band exists just to facilitate the inter-node communications. In the end, performance was excellent even at the furthest reaches of my 2500-sqft home, but the Tri-Band version might be a differentiator for higher speed use cases (I have 200x10 basic service with Spectrum) or larger homes nearing the stated "4500 sqft" mark.

A nice, but oversized Chromebook - For no reason!
on November 7, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Acer brand itself seems to pride itself on just how bulky it can make a device. The Spin 15 Chromebook is no exception.
Lets start with performance: This thing is snappy, loaded my Google account in mere seconds on the first sign-in, and updated itself within the first day to the latest ChromeOS with NO INTERVENTION FROM ME! This is where computing is going - Fast, simple, just work please!
The controls and interface are simple, and ChromeOS is going through some cosmetic changes right now to make it more touch-friendly, and this will benefit touchscreen, 360 hinge devices like this the most! Its a laptop when you need it, and a (VERY LARGE) tablet when you need that too!
On to the physical characteristics...
The body on this thing is WAY oversized. If you're concerned at all about portability, this thing is NOT bookbag friendly. Its about the frame-size of a 17" notebook PC. Its pretty thick, and heavy, and the screen has ungodly bezels. On a touch device, a ¼ or ½" bezel is welcome to give the user some surface to slide against, or even hold the screen while interacting, but these things are well over 1-inch in size and make the device unnecessarily large. On top of that, a device this size should have a full keyboard with numeric keypad. While this isn't common on Chromebooks, this body shape and size almost demands it - Just TONS of bezel on that screen makes this keyboard strangely small and out of place on the huge body.
The system is so massive, I don't see a great use for folded-back, touchscreen computing, unless its for kids playing a touch-game together, or people jointly enjoying a movie in tent mode.
All in all the form factor aside, this is a sharp Chromebook for the money, and Acer continues to impress with nice Chromebooks.

Non-premium vac with Premium power
on November 7, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The only thing that keeps this vacuum from competing with the "big boys" is build quality. Bissell makes "good" vacuums that are constructed of flimsy plastic and don't seal as well as their 2x price competitors. The bright colors are a little obvious too -
I love the big head brush on this, and the suction is good - We admittedly only have one pet, but hair is hair and its everywhere... And don't let anyone tell you kids don't shed as bad as dogs do!
We used this for a few weeks before fully deciding how to review. It did the job, but just doesn't feel as substantial as some of the other vacs we tried. It's true that you get what you pay for, but this one is a good deal if styling and maneuverability aren't worth paying twice as much for in your book...

I wasn't ready for how awesome this thing is!
on November 7, 2018
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Let me start with this. This mouse was totally unexpected. In no way did I think going "vertical" would change my comfort and productivity this much.
I was already a steady, daily, all-day user of Logitech's MX series mice on all of my devices, but now the MX Vertical pairs to them all and is my "one stop shop" for pointing devices on the desk.
This mouse has excellent resolution for graphics work, the level of control you get with the vertical orientation is AMAZING and the button/wheel layout is perfect. It will honestly take you all of 5 minutes to get used to it. You'll just never want to go back to anything else.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Logi opt for USB-Type-C charging for this one... Really modernizes the thing and eliminates my last USB-Micro B connection needed! Thanks for jumping to 2018 with that one!
The construction of this mouse is top-notch. Excellent, modern, attractive industrial design that only looks a "little weird"... But once you use it the looks won't matter. It actually looks great on my desk AND changes everything. Most special orientation devices are gaudy and awkward looking. This just looks like a mouse and fits right in with my MacBook Pro or My ThinkPad.
The only real complaint is that no side/horizontal scroll functionality is available out-of-the-box. I'm sure this can be customized in the Logi Options software, but from the start, none of the buttons nor the wheel support scroll orientation changing or tilt functionality - In Graphic arts and Spreadsheet jockeying, you'll need it. Bad.
I'm already telling everyone to get one of these. Best improvement in mouse dynamics in YEARS!

Can a VPN be installed on this router?

You can configure VPN passthrough in the web interface. I don't think the mobile app allows for configuring this.

The left bud needs the right bud to function. I find this to be true on most true wireless setups.

Is this Linksys -Velop compatible with Verizon Fios equipment? Everything does not work with Verizon - Fios equipment.

If Fios gives you a wired connection from a modem that provides IP service via Ethernet, these should work fine. The issue is whether or not Fios lets you disable their own wireless equipment, as you would only want the Internet connection from them via Ethernet/wired, and their wireless equipment either removed from the chain or turned off. This might be an issue if you use wireless TV receivers and other specialty equipment also - Check with your provider.

xfinity internet range extend in house?

I'm not sure what your question is, but let me take a guess - You have XFinity Internet from Comcast, and you want better WiFi range than the folks at Comcast provide... This product will help, but will only work properly if you have Comcast disable their WiFi service and just go wired from their modem to your Velop/Linksys system. Should be no problem, I know lots of people with Comcast service that enjoy these types of solutions.

Will this system directly plug into my century link router? Also, is the system compatible with the century link service? Thanks

If CenturyLink is providing you WiFI, this won't work - If they provide you an Ethernet connection out of the back of their modem, then this should work normally. If they provide both, you'll want to cancel the wiFi services of the CenturyLink before using this as it will cause interference with this solution. Tell them you JUST want Wired Internet Services and you'll provide your own WiFi gear. If that's a problem, they can help you with what you'll need to change/replace to make that happen on their end.

I have Netgear Nighthawk router and extender. Can I just plug these in to boost my Wi-Fi?

These would replace your NightHawk with a 3-piece solution. Where your Nighthawk is a cool-looking, stealthy router and wifi hotspot, one of these nodes would connect in its place and the other two would go throughout your house where Wi-Fi is GOOD and repeat that signal so that wifi is good EVERYWHERE. If the Nighthawk isn't covering the whole house (mine didn't either) then this is the way to go for the best in coverage. I've used 3 Velop systems (I'm a reviewer for BestBuy) and they're all excellent and solving this problem.

This is an ultrasimple and powerful system that uses only one Wi-Fi network name and password to give you seamless and secure Wi-Fi. And leading-edge security lets you block content and easily pause the Internet for dinner or homework. It works with all Internet service provider supplied equipment and speeds, and its simple app-based setup will get you up and running in minutes.

Trying to find a system that works in a house over 4000 sq feet. WiFi extenders didn’t work. Have a Spectrum WiFi router. What router is compatible w/Spectrum that I can use with mesh system. Do nodes just plug in? Will be used for iPads and phones only.

For a house that size, I'd say go for the Tri-Band system. Also tell Spectrum you don't want their wifi anymore... Get a regular Cable modem from them and hook up the Velop Tri-band main node to that modem - Then plug in the remaining two nodes halfway across the house from the router and base modem - Don't put them too far or they won't get the source connection. That's typically the problem with extenders is that people put them where they NEED coverage, instead of where they can GET coverage. Once the remote nodes (totally different than extenders BTW) are connected, they'll bring that WiFi signal to the harder-to-reach areas. I have used/reviewed both the Dual and Tri-Band Gen 1 and Gen2 Velop systems, and they are the state of the art in simplicity and coverage.

Without you knowing it, cybercriminals can infiltrate your Wi-Fi network and steal your identity or invade your privacy by accessing your connected devices. Password protection isn't enough anymore.Engineered with multi-layered security, Norton Core™ intelligently protects your Wi-Fi network and an unlimited number of connected IoT devices such as smart TVs, baby monitors, Wi-Fi thermostats as well as your personal devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets against malware, spyware, ransomware, viruses and more.

I have dsl. Will this work with dsl?

Yes! Just ensure that your DSL provider doesn't provide router/Wifi capabilities on your DSL modem - If they do, have those disabled and ensure that you're getting your ISP IP to the Core router. If you need help with getting that, their tech support should be able to do this, or replace your modem with an appropriate one.

Was just advised by Norton rep (have Nighthawk 1900/r7000 + Ubee Spectrum modem & current Norton Internet Security Premium) that I should "ADD the Core to my Nighthawk for enhanced security". Is this correct? So I'd connect Core to modem AND Nighthawk??

No - Your Nighthawk would be replaced by this. Trust me as I used to have a Nighthawk 1900 - This is a better router, supports easier QoS, and the security features on this device are better protection if you ONLY use this as your router. Also, push Spectrum for a better modem- Get the Arris TM1602.
