Compact, powerful party speaker!
on June 10, 2021

Anker nails a segment again - I've had party speakers/portable loudspeakers before from other brands, even MAJOR brands, and this thing blows them away for its size in every way.
Battery Life: This thing just goes and goes - I have been able to have entire 4-5 hour parties where this thing keeps going, and still has 2-3 bars or battery available when we're done.
Sound Quality: The sound is crisp, bass is nice and deep, and coverage is very good for a speaker of this size. When getting loud I didn't notice distortion until going to VERY high volumes.
Connectivity: The speaker has charging via USB-A for a connected Smartphone if one device is playing DJ and is dedicated to a fixed location. I had success using this speaker outside in a typical backyard (.3 acre) space where I was throughout the yard with the supplying phone, and connectivity never broke, and music quality was excellent across the yard.
Gripes: Only one - The charging cord for this speaker is a barrel charger, NOT a USB Type C connector... WHY ANKER? With their large cable/charging business, it seems unusual to not use an industry standard tech charging standard to allow this to be charged via USB PD... Instead a standard barrel charger is used, and one of the HARDEST TO OPEN AC folding prongs mechanism I've ever experienced (picture included). Outside of these minor issues when charging, I might pick up a second one to build a full stereo party rig.

Great quality updates from Acer!
on April 21, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981

This notebook is a LEAP for Acer's quality - Particularly on their ChromeOS portfolio.
Design:
The book is heavy, and feels thicker than it should for its size. There was a lot of attention given to heft and the feeling of premium, but the device has almost TOO MANY chamfered edges and almost a fragility introduced from having sharp edges and lots of brushed/polished surfaces. Maybe I just prefer the rounded look and feel of notebooks like the Pixelbook Go or other Chromebooks with a "softer" feel. I didn't get the feeling from this device that I could take it anywhere and use it comfortably, as those sharp edges and shiny parts looked like they'd take nicks and scratches easily, and no one is going to make a snap case for a niche Acer product.
Keyboard/Typing:
The keyboard on this is the FIRST Acer that felt like a premium device - This is AS GOOD or BETTER than my Dell or Apple keyboards on much more expensive enterprise devices. It also rivals premium typing experiences on Dell's XPS line or HP's Spectre series. The SLIGHTLY indented keys and excellent/even travel are the stadards for everyone else. This is the FIRST Acer device that didn't have a flexy cheap keyboard that I've experienced - This is even better than their gaming laptop keyboards!
Performance:
The Ryzen 3 in this device is hard to fully evaluate - I think for MOST ChromeOS use cases it will be perfect. I did find that in running certain Linux apps in VM Containers the graphics performance was mixed compared to Intel-based laptops, which could either be shortcomings in Linux to support Ryzen, or in net lower performance compared to 10th/11th gen Intel kit. Since this is a MINOR use case example, I didn't take any points off for this. Android apps and Chrome web-based experiences were smooth and fluid, so this platform is perfect for most users and use cases.
Battery:
Battery life was good, but not any different than I get from my other ChromeOS devices, so I dont think the Ryzen platform has derived significant benefit.
Screen/Display:
The 1080p display on this device is an EXCELLENT IPS panel, with good color (not calibrated for a specific color space, but looks great with apps and online). Contrast and brightness are similar to other premium business laptops, but aren't super-premium ultra contrast or ultra-bright displays featured on some flagships. This is expected considering this isn't a specialty or ultra-premium offering. The other concern is the MASSIVE lower bezel, where most other midrange and premium manufacturers have moved to 16:10 or 3:2 ratio displays that escew this design trend, Acer seems to EMBRACE it in the name of keeping a 16:9 aspect display employed (I'm sure to keep costs down) but there isn't even a logo or any information on the bezel - Just a distracting dark VOID - And an opportunity to brand or emblazen the device with some style. Just looking at it from a distance, the top and side bezels look quite modern, while the bottom takes the design language back a few years. It makes the entire laptop look like a design from 2016-era...
Overall:
Acers first attempt at premium materials and business-grade specs is an admirable one - Their design language just isn't compatible with it (big bulky vents and excessive chamfered shoulders are out-of-style)- If they can solve some of the aesthetics and come up with a Chrome-first design language, this offering will only get better. As it stands, if you like the way it looks, Its a FANTASTIC offering from them that should serve a broad range of users well at the right price point if the value is there!

Quite the kit for a fast, light, acrobatic drone!
on March 27, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The DJI FPV is really something. Its not your typical drone and I get questions about it whenever I fly it. Not only is the drone itself a unique industrial design, but the overall kit is quite involved when flying, consisting of the drone, the FPV headset, the controller, and the associated parts.
Everything you need to fly is included in the complete kit. The experience itself is pretty amazing, and I’ll try to itemize both the quirks and likes from each of the components, then talk about the flight and use experience later in the review. Lets start with the drone - As I mentioned before, its a unique look - The drone was widely anticipated as something totally new from DJI - It doesn’t look AT ALL like its Mavic or Phantom predecessors. It’s a forward-leaning posture with arms that DON’T fold up yet have an almost wing-like aerodynamic look, and a tall body that seems to be optimized for gimbal positioning and airflow during flight. The entire thing looks like its designed to flow best in a “lean forward” posture, which makes sense for some of the speeds this thing is capable of, but gives it a “grasshopper-like” appearance when sitting on the ground or when idling/hovering in position. The drone itself proves this design by being extremely nimble.
I was amazed at just how maneuverable this device was, although my experience is primarily with larger drones, so this was my first FPV/racing-grade drone experience. I don’t have a lot of experience with DJIs smaller drones, such as the Mavic Mini, but this one still seems like a departure in the maneuverability department.
What also impressed me was the speed and controls capability. This drone is FAST. You’re offered 3 flight modes. Normal, which brings all of DJIs safety/object/obstacle detection intelligence into play and limits flight speed to roughly 30mph. That’s right. You’re LIMITED to 30mph in Normal mode. Thats just the starting point. Sport mode is next, which eliminates some of the restrictions of Normal mode, but continues to practice object/obstacle detection, more in a warning mode. You can crash this drone in Sport mode. As a highlight, this mode has a top speed closer to 60mph. Double the Normal mode speed. I got some amazing footage (attached) in this sport mode over a local lake that’s been reduced in depth for upcoming rains and had some cool things going on. I was able to fly VERY quickly in some cases over the lake and around the shoreline and practice some fast turn maneuvers and quick-swing/drift acrobatics in Sport mode, The final mode is Manual, which disables all of the safety and automation in the drone and gives you the full power of the unit for speed and maneuvers/acrobatics. In this mode you now have the ability to do flips, barrel rolls and make adjustments to the controls to suit your needs. Many will think that it’s the mode you would want to fly on if you have drone flight/acrobatic experience, but this mode is COMPLEX and with NONE of the drone’s helper features, it can be VERY difficult to master. DJI offers simulators to practice with that are REQUIRED to unlock Manual mode, so even they understand that only tried and tested pilots should attempt this mode. This mode also releases all speed limits, and its been documented that some have achieved speeds of almost 80mph with this drone in Manual mode. This thing is noisy, and its motor sounds can be heard on recorded video, but is also VERY pronounced nearby when flying, more so than with other drones I have flown. This drone has tri-blade rotors for speed and as part of the lightweight design, and these are prominently heard and seen in video footage from the drone’s camera. Nothing a little video cropping in post can’t fix, but a little disappointing. On to controls specifically, the controller from this kit is top-notch. Not only does it have an impressive layout and GREAT axis controls, the radio range as it communicates with the drone is amazing. I was able to fly 1km away and was only 1-bar down from full signal strength… This was outdoors and with line-of-sight, but still impressive. The controller also has excellent heft and size - I have big hands and heard from others that the controller seemed HUGE to them. The controller has some interesting tricks up its sleeve for manual mode, including the ability to adjust the tension/tightness of the flight sticks in the back with the included Allen wrench. I adjusted mine a bit tighter to try this out, but found the factory setting good for Normal and Sport modes, while there are many advantages to adjustments based on your fly preferences, this removes the 'return to center’ behavior of the controller that is quite useful for beginners/casual pilots.
On to the really unique element: The DJI Goggles V2 included in this kit are an unusual looking but work fantastically to give an immersive experience to the pilot, and to give a frame to the videographer using the drone to capture unique footage. I’ve got a pretty big head and the straps allow for adjustment well beyond the size of my melon! I’ve also been impressed at their signal range, which is just as good as the connection between the drone and remote controller. One strange thing about this headset is that it works with an external battery. This is accomplished by a USB Type C to 12V DC barrel proprietary 6ft connector cable that doesn’t seem to make much sense. Why not just integrate the battery into the headset? Why not use USB Type C for both ends of the connection so that non-proprietary cables could be used? There’s no attachment mechanism for that headset to the battery, so it needs to be carried separately, the cable run from a pocket or a table nearby, and no other USB Power packs or chargers can be used in lieu of the included battery pack. This kind of proprietary-for-the-sake-of-it approach is mildly infuriating as there is no technological reason for it. Its a shame too, as the headset itself performs beautifully. The only feedback Id give, and this is coming from a large-headed, wide-eyed fellow, is that the shape of the foam on the mask portion of the headset allows light in below my eyes that can be distracting during flight. If you have the ability to try on a DJI Goggles v2 headset before buying, I highly recommend it.
So who is this strange-looking, lots-of-accessories-required drone made for? Its not quite light or nimble enough to compete with the custom racers out there, and its 1-axis gimbal prevents some of the acrobatics from delivering smoothly and creating exceptional content, so its not for content creators specifically, so I’m guessing its a unique attempt by DJI to do what they do best in the mainstream enthusiast market - Create a new category: Drones for people who want a jack-of-all-trades experience, but without the need for mastery of any of them. Impressive flight dynamics, video quality, and quirky output all characteristics of their core brand, but not the end-all-be-all of any one market - So that they attract the laymen of interest in all segments. It is a truly interesting drone and a fun kit to play with - Particularly with the immersion of FPV experience and its excellent range. I just don’t know how long it will be until v2 comes out taking on some of the shortcomings. I also don't know how much I'd recommend this to someone that has $1300 to spend on a great drone, but its the only current offering that bundles the FPV experience and is ready-to-fly right out of the box.

Finally COMPLY tips for my favorite headphones!
on March 22, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I've been wondering if Apple would partner with COMPLY or if COMPLY would just do it for a while. The AirPods Pro are some killer true wireless buds but their seal is the ONE complaint many people have with the design, especially with their ANC capabilities, getting a good seal is the key to true isolation mode.
Finally we have the solution! The COMPLY tips have been trusted by audiophiles for decades now and seem to provide the holy grail of comfort and seal to just about anyone - They even imrpove fit for most users!
These are no exception. I wasn't sure how they were going to work in practice as they need to be able to fit into the charging case which is pretty specific to Apple's defailt bud form. They fit great! I was also worried about these DARK GREY foam tips on my otherwise stylish white AirPods. While its not a great look, it's really not visible once installed in-ear, and the difference in noise isolation and thus noise cancelling is worth it! At one point, I assume COMPLY or Apple looked at white foam for these or something like them, but imagine what happens to white foam after a few days of in-ear use... Yuck!
In all these are part of my AirPods now. They're never breaking up, like, ever...

Excellent toothbrush for Sonicare fans!
on March 22, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
If you're interested in those new "subscription toothbrush" -type models but you're a fan of Sonicare's brushheads and vibration style, this is the toothbrush for you. It brings all of the capabilities of Sonicare to a travel-friendly (or small bathroom-friendly) use case.
The midnight color design is nice and the battery replaceability was a welcome change from my old rechargeable sonicare devices.
If you're looking for rechargeable, and adjustment of vibration pattern or other connected controls, you'll be better suited to a more traditional electric brush. If you like the idea of something like those NEW guys, but you like the Sonicare offering, and are looking for a great travel brush or a new smaller brush for home, this is for you.

A REAL studio mic with lots of built-in features
on March 3, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Q9U is an impressive studio mic. I'm coming from some of Samson's smaller mics, like the Satellite, and I was impressed by the heft, build quality, and output from this new microphone. I feel like I have the perfect studio rig now.
The mic does come pretty bare bones - The mic itself, the mount bracket that's permanently attached, and a foam screen are all that come in the box - You wont get any kind of stand base - That's an optional add-on from Samson but most standard mount mic stands will work as this uses the universal threaded mount size for microphones and arm mounting. The Q9U is USB-Type-C supported, and I was happy to find BOTH a C-to-C cable, and a USB-A-to-C cable in the box, and both were 6ft long! With most mics I've reviewed, you either only get the A cable, and/or they're only 3 feet long which prevents successful integration into a boom arm for real set ups.
The mic mounted easily to my arm, but I really had to wrench and tighten the arms joints as this thing is HEAVY - I think I'll be upgrading to one of Samson's approved arms for this beast. I also had no problem connecting my AT-M51s as monitor for this mic. Works perfectly with the included 3.5mm Audio jack. There is a standard XLR port if you're a real pro and looking to integrate this mic into your non-impostor setup, unlike me...
The device works great with my recording/collaborating/event software, which includes OBS Studio, Microsoft Teams, Audition, GrageBand, and Logic - NO issues with any of these and no drivers required on Windows 10 or macOS. Audio quality was excellent, though I need to spend some time tuning with the available midrange boost switch and testing the built-in pop filtration.
For just a small premium over the entry level price, this thing seems to do an amazing job and is a much higher quality mic than what I was expecting. Really looking forward to events and broadcasting with this clarity.

Excellent flat iron/straightener for the price!
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
My wife was the primary reviewer of our new curling iron, but she had a few key points to make when reviewing and using this for the first few days once she got it out and set up to replace her current flat iron:
- The build quality is premium and much better quality than most in this price range. This resulted in a few improvements in use as well, as some cheaper models tend to "pull hair" where this one didn't.
- Multiple heat settings actually seemed to control heat, where the typical multi-heat models in this price range seemed to be either HOT or NOT.
- This iron gets HOT so if you're looking for a good high-heat iron, this one will do nicely. There are certain types of hair that some flat irons just can't do anything with. This one seems engineered specifically for high curl and coarse hair types.
- This iron has a nice flexible cord, unlike some cheaper models with firmer power cords, this made it easy to navigate around her head while using without worrying about the stiff cord getting in the way.
All in all for her hair type, this was a great pick. Better control, good weight, and great results. This is her new go-to flat iron!

Trusty ol' Block Software... Strange behaviors
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Let me start by saying that I've trusted H&R Block's software with my Tax Returns since the TaxCut-branded days. This is always my go-to software for ensuring that I don't miss any deduction or calculation opportunities, and as a small business owner AND former rental property owner, this has been a valuable piece of software.
With that, lets get into the ONE thing that kept this from being a 5-star review. H&R Blocks software seems to be able to be "tricked" into showing you different refund/owe calculations when you make and correct mistakes. Several times when filing for 2020, I would accidentally enter a 1099 twice, then correct. What's interesting is that my displayed "refund amount" would change from the before duplication amount, to something where more taxes were owed than before once corrected. What this tells me is that there are bugs in the calculation software that seem to present themselves and don't self-correct. I tested this by fixing all of my mistakes in a file, then creating a new file and entering everything correctly the first time, and there was a $140 refund difference.
My advice? This is still one of the best filing advice software products out there. Not much has changed for 2020, but as you're working pay attention to the changes happening in your refund based on what you're doing and don't be afraid to start over in certain sections to ensure your data is correctly entered. I think there are some "number stacking" bugs that don't get corrected on incorrect entries, or the way it calculates certain rules is affected when you back out and re-enter certain data.
One highlight for 2020 seems to be that state tax software seems to download and install more quickly. I appreciated this considering that I don't always have a lot of time to sit down to my annual tax return process and this just made things generally faster. Thanks Block! See you next year!

Good doorbell cam for the anti-cloud crowd
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This Lorex doorbell cam will complement closed-circuit systems installed in homes and businesses nicely. Its not a cloud-connected cam like those from Ring or Nest, but works in a similar way. Its able to record to a memory card and has decent night vision and fair video quality by day. The camera doesn't do well with sun glare on winter evenings where the sun is beaming into the lens. The glare makes videos almost unwatchable, and there would be no way to identify someone during the hour or two where this lighting occurs. Just silhouettes in the glare beam... The playback quality is good, but I didn't get a chance to try any "pre-recorded" messages, but this may be an interesting feature for a small business or office using this system. There was a small light emitted from the bottom of the doorbell, but I couldn't really figure out what this was for - It wasn't enough light to light up the front porch or walkway, and didn't illuminate the door or the doorbell itself, which has a backlit RING button. Not sure what this was for, save for aesthetics.
All in all I would recommend to someone looking for an offline solution that didn't have a larger ecosystem to integrate with.

Without you knowing it, cybercriminals can infiltrate your Wi-Fi network and steal your identity or invade your privacy by accessing your connected devices. Password protection isn't enough anymore.Engineered with multi-layered security, Norton Core™ intelligently protects your Wi-Fi network and an unlimited number of connected IoT devices such as smart TVs, baby monitors, Wi-Fi thermostats as well as your personal devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets against malware, spyware, ransomware, viruses and more.

I am a truck driver and need the best wireless internet for my truck so I can play on my ps4, could Norton be used as on the go?

If you have the ability to hook it up to an AC inverter, I don't see why not, but are you using an Internet Modem for service that outputs to Ethernet? This only distributes an Internet connection, it doesn't create one, so you'd still need service from a provider... Wired service preferably for PS4 play. I wouldn't recommend this for Cellular connections nor would I recommend using a metered cellular connection for gaming.

Is the Norton Core compatible with spectrum Internet service

I'm currently using this product with Spectrum with ZERO issues. It works great as long as they aren't providing you WiFI service - Call Spectrum to ensure that their modem is NOT a Wifi Combo device and that you're not going to get router service from their modem. The Norton Core wants to do all of that. If you have a REGULAR cable modem (I recommend you push Spectrum for the Arris TM1602) you should have a great experience.

what is the expected hours of bulb life?

6000 hrs normal settings, and up to 10,000 hrs on eco mode. Not sure if you'll see that in normal uses, but thats the rating. Environmental factors, such as movement of the device, heat, humidity, dust exposure, etc. all have an impact on bulb life.

From TV shows to movies to games, it’s all available on Apple TV. Enjoy content from iTunes and apps like Apple TV+, Disney+, Netflix, Hulu and ESPN – or use the Siri Remote to find just what you want.* You can even share all the photos you take with your iPhone on the big screen. And it all looks great in HD.

Is the Apple TV4 have the ability to be used as the hub for HomeKit?

With the latest software updates, the 4th Gen (1080P) AppleTV can be used as a HomeKit hub. The 5th gen (4K) AppleTV can also be used.

Can you use any app on your iphone along with the apple TV using airplay or are their restrictions?

Apps that support AirPlay can be mirrored to any AppleTV, and AirPlay Mirroring of your iPhone screen can allow for any iPhone screen content to show on-TV, but there are limits to the experience when doing this, and getting around those requires bespoke support from the app dev.

Good luck!

Elevate your workout with these JBL Free wireless headphones. Their hands-free design lets you control music and make calls with the touch of a button, and the charging case stores 20 hours of backup power to keep tunes playing through your entire workout. These JBL Free wireless headphones use JBL Signature Sound to provide high-quality audio.

How do I know when they are fully charged? I swear I've been looking and can't find anything in the box.

The lights inside the case will all completely go dark when charging the buds is complete. Same for when the case and buds are plugged in - When they are lit white or the rings of the buds are lit, things are charging. This whole light set will go dark in a few hours when everything is juiced up for another 20h use!

If I want to just make a quick phone call, can I only put one on and leave the other in the case while I'm on the call?

I have had success doing this with the right ear (Primary) bud, but they can't be used interchangeably like this... I wish this would work, but the left bud seems to lack a microphone and cannot be paired independent of the right bud. This does avoid confusion that other headphones present where the pairing of an individual bud for each side and the "Paired pair" can conflict when used with the same phone/device the individual ones do - Just one BT identity here.

What is tge range in a 450 ft space

If you're asking whether or not your voice will be picked up in a 450sqft space, I'd say yes indeed. If there are walls between you and the assistant you might need to speak up as if you're talking to someone in the room where its located, but this will be highly dependent on your vocal tone also.

can i unplug it and put it in another room withour resetting it?

Yes - the only time I'd think you'd want to change its config would be a different WiFi Network, or if you wanted to, you could just change the settings using the Google Home app on your Smartphone. You might want to change its location in there too, since it needs to know if you've given it a new room that might also have Chromecast, etc locally.
