Niche use case with unusual installation requireme
on October 7, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This version of the PHYN system installs "conveniently" under a sink and monitors pressure modulation in your water system to detect leaks or other problems across your home water system.
The system achieves this through sensors that are connected to your hot and cold water lines and in detection, certain water use scenarios are performed to help "calibrate" the system.
The challenge with this system is twofold: First, the calibration activity isnt absolute. The system will continue to calibrate for days and weeks and get "better" at recognizing anomalies. For example, my system has been installed for almost 2 weeks, and still falsely reports incidents from normal water use and requires constant education from the user. This human-assisted intelligence is interesting, but seems to be a great deal of work for the value and lack of accuracy.
Second, the system requires under-sink access to standard water lines, in addition to an unswitched AC outlet. This is an almost impossible installation scenario in 99% of homes. I was able to run the power supply to a kitchen outlet throughout my evaluation, but will not keep my current installation scenario. Someone with a basement/garage utility sink might fare better with access to hot/cold lines AND GFCI AC power in a single installation site.
All in all the device seems finicky and gimmicky and has very little opportunity to be installed in most homes without major electrical or water line modification.

Meh. Does what it does... Niche and expensive.
on September 24, 2020

The SELPHY QX10 is an OK dye-sub inkjet. Its small, square prints are novel, sometimes, adhesive-backed, and of adequate quality, but no part of the experience justifies the price of one of these units.
The cartridges and paper are expensive, the print quality is unremarkable, so I don't see the value. The target market for this is small and generally has limited spending power. I'm not sure having spent this much on the hardware such buyers could justify the upkeep cost of special paper and ink rolls.
In short, The quick small prints are "neat", but not worth the massive investment and lack of versatility.

The new standard in Multi-cookers!
on September 15, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Having owned several devices in the Foodi line, as well as an entire arsenal of Ninja-brand electrics in our kitchen, ranging from Blenders to coffee makers, we've been most impressed with the new Foodi SmartXL Indoor grill.
This thing has completely replaced our other air fryer/air crisper and added indoor grilling functionality that is both fast and mess-free.
This machine is also the CLEANEST working grill/air cooker we've used- I also had the opportunity to try the thermometer function, which is intuitive and very accurate. We've been enjoying the grill for chicken, steaks, as well as lots of lower-fat crisping of breaded foods and potatoes.
The device is typical Ninja excellent build quality and the inside cooking area is made of a porcelain coated surface that has easy cleanup properties. The machines cleans up easily on the outside as well, since the entire control panel is a single piece of glass with touch sensitivity. The fan assembly has a washable filter screen that catches oils and grease and keeps the fan and motor area clear of buildup.
This is our favorite new cooking device and it works astoundingly well. We will be recommending this to everyone we talk to about it!

The quintessential wired mouse. A classic!
on September 15, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981

The Logitech M500 series is the quintessential classic optical wired mouse.
The build quality is excellent as is the case with all of Logitech's input devices, but the M500 series is their mid-premium range level, and the build quality here is their standard quality.
Button clicks seem durable and are clearly articulated, and scrolling has just the right amount of tactile feedback.
All in all this is a great USB-A connected mouse for wired use cases where a wireless mouse just wont work. I suspect a USB-Type-C connector version would be a great add to this lineup with Dell's XPS and Apple's MacBook lines no longer including any USB-A ports. Otherwise this is the perfect product (for wired cases).

Great headset for K-2nd graders going remote...
on August 20, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I got this headset for my 1st grader who will be doing school remotely this fall. The headset itself is well-enough constructed, but don't expect gaming headset levels of build quality here. Its mostly vinyl covering over foam on the earpads and headband, with some hard plastics on the headband ends and caps over the drivers/earpieces. The plastics used are strong but seem very basic.
The headset folds up nicely for storage but uses TWO cables for charging (for wireless use) and for wired use (a separate MicroUSB>3.5mm cable). The use of MicroUSB here is expected, but disappointing as even cheaper headphones from competitors are starting to use USB-Type-C as a standard, which makes for much better universal connectivity and charging ubiquity
The headphones fit my first grader perfectly and she's got room to grow into them. The audio quality is excellent and the volume control is perfect - Although I wish it would allow to get just a LITTLE BIT louder as in noisy situations she struggled to hear it clearly and stay focused, even with the volume maxed out in the application and on the laptop, the audio was VERY quiet when I had a listen.
Wireless use is great. Sound quality is virtually indistinguishable from wired, good midtones, but my expectations around bass were limited anyway due to the volume restrictions (not a bad thing at all!). The wireless endurance is very good. My daughter used these for 2 3-4 hour days without running them down, then I charged them up again just to avoid her getting disconnected in the middle of school work. Thats plenty of power in my book and there's room to run them down further!
The built-in boom mic is my favorite part of these headphones. Its the best design I've ever seen for kids who fidget with it. When its not needed (most of their online learning is just audio immersion, with interaction/microphone only needed during teacher meetings/class gatherings online) - The boom mic being able to stow completely away in the headset turning them into normal looking headphones is HUGE. I love the way that works.
My only concern is the MicroUSB port that will likely wear out as its used for both analog audio and charging connection, and the wire frame for the headband and earpieces and how it SNAPS into place to hold the headset open for use. I fear these will be failure points at the hinges or the plastic clips/frame will wear down prematurely, but JLAB seems to build durable kid products so only time will tell.

Perfect Ethernet adapter accessory
on July 20, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Belkin USB-C Ethernet adapter not only works great, but has a simple compact design that goes easily into my travel bag and allows me to enjoy wired networking options wherever I go.
The adapter works great on Mac, Windows, and ChromeOS, so its perfect for those situations where a wired connection is all that's available or what's required (for example during a network set up or testing scenario). I was delighted to see Belkin include a USB-C Power pass-through to allow for single-port devices, such as some Chromebooks and MacBooks, to still be able to charge via AC adapter while connected to the wired network.
In my testing, speeds were excellent and the devices is simply detected as a Realtek 10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter. No fuss set up worked as if my laptop(s) had built-in Ethernet.
Highly recommended as with most other Belkin adapters. Excellent addition to the product line.

Well-made all-in-one designed for value
on July 6, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I was impressed by the DJ4155+ from a build quality perspective. It was packed VERY efficiently in its shipping box, and is constructed out of very sturdy plastic that doesn’t feel flimsy at all. Previous HP AIOs have had thinner and more flexible parts, but this looks like it should hold up well.
Wireless setup was not an issue for me, but other reviewers noted some problems there. It seems to work better on 2.4GHz networks but purports to be dual-band – I had no issues when adding it to my 802.11AC (WiFi 5) mesh network.
There’s one design flaw – Its not a flaw so much as a TERRIBLE value decision. This thing doesn’t have a horizontal paper storage and loading tray – It has a rear top-load paper tray, which presents several problems:
- The paper is out in the open air when loaded, and subject to dust entry and damage of your paper stock while waiting to be printed on.
- The paper hangs over the tray, and can result in warped/creased/folded pages that do not load properly or print with poor quality/damage.
- The loader sometimes pulls more than one page in, or pulls paper in at an incorrect angle, resulting in poor prints and wasted paper and ink when these mistakes happen.
This seems to be the most glaring caution to buying one of these printers. The lack of a proper paper tray makes this hard to recommend.
To balance things out, this is one of the least expensive models from HP that supports Instant ink – This really makes everything better from a value perspective. HP offers excellent prices for 50-100 pages/month and still costs less per year than just a single pair of black/tricolor cartridges. The printer comes with a 2-month trial of the 50 page-per-month plan and the ink included will get you started on this subscription. This is the way to go even if you don’t print much – 50 pages per month is going to get you proactive ink replenishment and total annual costs under $40/year. Try just buying a tricolor cartridge for less than that! – And the Instant Ink cartridges you’ll get by mail are LARGER than even the XL variants of existing HP carts, meaning that you won’t be changing ink as often, leading to better performance during large print jobs where knowing you have the supplies you need matter.
Print quality was very good – punchy color on documents as well as great looking photos – The ink type used in this printer seems to do well even with high quality prints, but the top loading prevents prolonged use as a photo printer, considering how hard it would be to keep photo paper from sticking and jamming. I had this issue several times while testing it and I was using HP photo paper and HP Inkjet paper to evaluate it.
Scanning was great. Surprised to see an auto document feeder in this price range, especially considering that this is targeted to homes where more basic scanning needs are typical. It works well and didn’t have any issues in my tests. Scans are good quality and the scan controls in the HP Scan app are excellent on desktop and mobile.
Mobile and desktop printing was pretty effortless, but I already used other HP all-in-ones, so I was already set up with the right apps and software. Apple’s AirPrint is supported and worked with no problems when testing with my own iPhone and iPad, and the kids’ phones as well. Mobile scanning also worked great if your use case requires that.
For a sub-$100 class, this is a great printer/scanner with one flaw – No paper tray and a gravity-fed rear top loader. If this can be remedied in future designs, this is a tremendous value for home use. Instant Ink capabilities might just be enough to cancel that out for home users who don’t print much.

Sesh Evo – One of the best values in true wireless
on July 6, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Sesh Evo headphones were not expected to be this feature packed for the price – I wasn’t expecting the sound quality or the features and warranty coverage offered by Skullcandy in their latest “true wireless” offering.
Lets start with audio quality – These sound GOOD. They are not AirPods Pro but I found them comparable to other competing offerings in the sub-$150 true wireless category. Great sound that was clear and distortion free, but not the bass depth that some will be looking for, despite their affordable price. I found the replication of sound much closer to true but not punchy. The lack of Active Noise Cancellation was a disappointment, but expected in this price range. The audio quality was so good that I almost expected it as these seem to be swinging for the higher end of the market.
The design and case is great, but the charging/storage case for the buds is a bit large for this category – Not “Powerbeats Pro” big, but definitely larger than other competitors, but this is a well-made case and is still a pocketable dimension. The charging case charges with USB-Type-C so we’re finally in 2020 here with form factor. The earbuds confidently magnetically connect and charged without effort in my trials with them. The bottom of the charging case is also flat, so it stands still while charging, unlike some competitors that use rounded case designs that tend to slide around and roll around while sitting on the nightstand/desk. One of the other unsung heroes of this large case design is Skullcandy including TILE support built-in – You can activate your charging case as a TILE device in the Tile app – Always easy to find – In my opinion EVERY TW headphones set should include this or something like it!!
The buds themselves are a funny shape, with a ovular ‘wing’ and a bulb with silicone tip that fit inside the ear. I had no problem wearing them comfortably for an hour or so in my tests (I’m a large adult with medium/large ears) but my wife and pre-teen daughters all struggled to insert the buds or keep them in their ears even with the smallest silicone tips installed. These are NOT for small-eared folks!
Battery life was on-par for the industry – Several hours (4h in my testing) of listening between charges, and about a weekend’s worth of listening with the case. Excellent kit for taking in the bag on a short trip.
These are a great offering overall – 2 years of manufacturer limited warranty out-of-the-box – No need to buy extended warranties here! Built in locator support with TILE, but NOT for small ears or kids who have trouble with large earbuds otherwise.

Excellent shaver and grooming kit for travelers
on July 6, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The ARC Precision shaver and groomer has excellent build quality. It’s a sturdy screen/foil shaver with an intuitive pop-out grooming blade that retracts into the back of the handheld. It’s charged with a simple 2-prong power cord, but unfortunately doesn’t work as a corded device with instant-on if the battery is depleted. The good news is that its able to recover quickly, with a 3minute quick charge which allows for enough time to shave or trim quickly. A full battery lasts about an hour total, so for a short trip (3-4 days) you could charge this up at home and not carry the cord or accessories if you just need a few touch-up shaves while on the road.
Speaking of trimming, the grooming blade also comes with two adjustable guard devices that work well to set stubble or short beard trim levels much like larger trimmers work. These are functional, but not exactly convenient as they will likely be easily lost as they are both separate components, so keeping the travel case organized is a must. I’m not sure how they incorporate such an adjustable length guard into the unit, but this is a good solution.
The shave experience itself is great. Very smooth and close shave results, and the trimmer works as advertised. No issues keeping my COVID cut under control and keeping my face clear for video calls with my colleagues.
In all, this is a well-made, powerful shaver with excellent trimming/grooming capabilities and a great travel accessory. I would highly recommend.

Good Budget TV that lives up to its category
on June 3, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The 55” H8G television is not an expensive screen – But it purports to pack-in expensive features at its budget price. What I found was a good TV with a GREAT smart interface, but some flaws that would push me to the higher end or mainstream brands first…
The TV itself:
Build quality/Industrial design is excellent here. Thin and narrow bezels really look modern. Very little Hisense branding on the enclosure. (That will be a good thing as they’re not a recognized quality brand). This is a good-looking TV for your living area, or really anywhere. I can see the larger versions being very good buys for a basement set-up.
The VESA mounts are set low on the TV- That’s an important consideration for mounting, as the TV will sit significantly above, not on-center, with the mount hardware.
The legs can be mounted 2 ways for different footprints. This is a helpful feature for shelf-fit installations and was welcome from such a new entrant.
The remote is excellent, and has perfect CEC pass-through for AppleTV control. I was impressed as NO OTHER television I’ve owned has executed this properly. Voice controls were good and basic remote functionality had good reception even when not pointed directly at the TV.
4 Inputs! Finally! How do the budget players get this right and the mainstream brands keep cutting inputs. 4 should be standard.
Also of note is that this TV still has an RF coax jack for an OTA tuner or antenna – There is still tuner logic included in the device, so getting OTA channels or ClearQAM from your local cable company is still an option here.
Picture Quality:
I was really excited by the picture output on this screen, as I’d read that the “Quantum Dot” tech they used would yield a bright, well contrasted, but excellent color image, like more expensive TVs, but for less… Let me sum it up for you – It’s not the best picture quality out of the box, but it can be fixed…
Presets don’t seem to be very calibrated. All showed poor/washed out colors with both AppleTV input content and the built-in Android TV native stuff.
Grays are washed out and splotchy on the screen. Custom settings helped with this.
Custom calibration and settings adjustment helped tremendously, but smooth motion effects are still a mixed experience. Some of the clarity filters cause major image distortion, and I still can’t find pixel-perfect options, as everything is themed or named based on Hisense design. I didn’t get. The picture exactly where I wanted it, but I’m closer now, but really need noise reduction to work better – I’m sure based on other positive reviews that I need to hone my skills in this space.
Audio
Audio is strong, but clarity isn’t what you’d get out of a sound bar, but loud and good for wall-mounting. The device supports Dolby Atmos content, which fared significantly better than generic sources.
Android TV
Bad text quality – Only 1080p or 720 interlaced – Can’t tell – Blurry text, low quality graphics – It was the same throughout settings menus on the device, as they’re mostly orchestrated inside the Android TV interface… Makes me think that the integrated Android TV is not using the native 4K resolution of the device – Why would they include this with such poor visual quality?
The assistant worked well and the apps are great – We’ll have to see how Hisense supports this integration with Android security updates and feature updates as Android TV is about to get some HUGE investments from Google it seems.
The ‘Chromecast built-in’ is an interesting beast – Seems to over-saturate or distort YouTube content when casted, but no other content seemed to be affected. I also can’t tell whether Chromecast content is native 4K – I’d love to know if these built-in Chromecasts and Android TVs will ever support Stadia game streaming also.
Overall this is a lot of TV for the price, and an impressive set for picture and audio output and it comes with the kind of physical design and port selection that should be standard. I’d recommend it but really want to see some improvements on Android TV overall and know more from the manufacturer what kind of support for the smart platform we can expect.

Without you knowing it, cybercriminals can infiltrate your Wi-Fi network and steal your identity or invade your privacy by accessing your connected devices. Password protection isn't enough anymore.Engineered with multi-layered security, Norton Core™ intelligently protects your Wi-Fi network and an unlimited number of connected IoT devices such as smart TVs, baby monitors, Wi-Fi thermostats as well as your personal devices like laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets against malware, spyware, ransomware, viruses and more.

I am a truck driver and need the best wireless internet for my truck so I can play on my ps4, could Norton be used as on the go?

If you have the ability to hook it up to an AC inverter, I don't see why not, but are you using an Internet Modem for service that outputs to Ethernet? This only distributes an Internet connection, it doesn't create one, so you'd still need service from a provider... Wired service preferably for PS4 play. I wouldn't recommend this for Cellular connections nor would I recommend using a metered cellular connection for gaming.

Is the Norton Core compatible with spectrum Internet service

I'm currently using this product with Spectrum with ZERO issues. It works great as long as they aren't providing you WiFI service - Call Spectrum to ensure that their modem is NOT a Wifi Combo device and that you're not going to get router service from their modem. The Norton Core wants to do all of that. If you have a REGULAR cable modem (I recommend you push Spectrum for the Arris TM1602) you should have a great experience.

what is the expected hours of bulb life?

6000 hrs normal settings, and up to 10,000 hrs on eco mode. Not sure if you'll see that in normal uses, but thats the rating. Environmental factors, such as movement of the device, heat, humidity, dust exposure, etc. all have an impact on bulb life.

Apps that support AirPlay can be mirrored to any AppleTV, and AirPlay Mirroring of your iPhone screen can allow for any iPhone screen content to show on-TV, but there are limits to the experience when doing this, and getting around those requires bespoke support from the app dev.

Good luck!

Elevate your workout with these JBL Free wireless headphones. Their hands-free design lets you control music and make calls with the touch of a button, and the charging case stores 20 hours of backup power to keep tunes playing through your entire workout. These JBL Free wireless headphones use JBL Signature Sound to provide high-quality audio.

How do I know when they are fully charged? I swear I've been looking and can't find anything in the box.

The lights inside the case will all completely go dark when charging the buds is complete. Same for when the case and buds are plugged in - When they are lit white or the rings of the buds are lit, things are charging. This whole light set will go dark in a few hours when everything is juiced up for another 20h use!

If I want to just make a quick phone call, can I only put one on and leave the other in the case while I'm on the call?

I have had success doing this with the right ear (Primary) bud, but they can't be used interchangeably like this... I wish this would work, but the left bud seems to lack a microphone and cannot be paired independent of the right bud. This does avoid confusion that other headphones present where the pairing of an individual bud for each side and the "Paired pair" can conflict when used with the same phone/device the individual ones do - Just one BT identity here.

What is tge range in a 450 ft space

If you're asking whether or not your voice will be picked up in a 450sqft space, I'd say yes indeed. If there are walls between you and the assistant you might need to speak up as if you're talking to someone in the room where its located, but this will be highly dependent on your vocal tone also.

can i unplug it and put it in another room withour resetting it?

Yes - the only time I'd think you'd want to change its config would be a different WiFi Network, or if you wanted to, you could just change the settings using the Google Home app on your Smartphone. You might want to change its location in there too, since it needs to know if you've given it a new room that might also have Chromecast, etc locally.
