Nice wireless set - Getting what's paid for...
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This is a nice, simple wireless pair from Logitech, who is really covering the whole range of products these day - This Mouse/Keyboard combo gets the job done well and consistently, but there are a few things that keep it from competing with more premium sets:
- Key feel and travel - This is a "chiclet-style" keyboard, as are most basic sets these days, but the key travel and feel are akin to a very cheap laptop keyboard, with lots of key wobble and unsteady center "capture" of keys - Just makes it hard to type fast and ensure that all keys are registered - With slower typists or typing use cases this probably wont be an issue.
- The build quality of they mouse seems solid enough but a bit more weight and "heft" would have helped it feel more premium - Tracking was good and the magnetic top hatch for battery changes and cleaning will bode well for maintenance access for the tiny mouse - If this thing were bluetooth (I believe Logi makes a variant that is) it would make an EXCELLENT travel mouse! As a desk mouse its OK for the dorm room or kid's/parents PC - Not for enthusiasts or people that care about ergonomics.
- The keyboard is very light and is composed of solid plastic save for the top of the keyboard where the batteries are stored - Under a VERY flimsy gray plastic door that spans the width of the keyboard there is also stowage for the USB dongle and an unusual empty space that the door fills in when inserted - I think on other Logitech models there is a Smartphone slot there - Why was it omitted on this model? Why just fill it in with a plastic insert? Strange design choice if re-using form factors and chassis across products.
- My last observation is simply one of value vs. premium as well - If this mouse and keyboard set supported UNIFYING- Logitech's programmable/pairable USB receiver tech, I'd be giving it 4 stars regardless of the issues above - Instead it comes with a pre-programmed USB adapter that can't be paired to other Logitech devices nor can either of these devices be added to a UNIFYING receiver - Now I know UNIFYING is typically reserved for the higher-end Logi devices, like the MX series and this is priced WAY below these, but this would have skyrocketed the usefulness of both components - Being able to separate them and pair the keyboard with a nicer MX or Triathlon mouse while using the mouse with another receiver for travel use would have been perfect for me.
Maybe these affordable sets just aren't for me - But I'd recommend this to a friend with a college-bound kid, a Kid's room AIO PC, or older parent just looking for the basics.

Interesting heating feature added to a loud mixer
on October 26, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This must have been an interesting protopype - A hand mixer with a hair dryer attached.
The Oster HeatSoft is just that - A relatively standard hand mixer with a blower for hot air where the mixer arms connect that can warm hard butter or soften cream cheese used in some recipies.
In practice, the mixer itself is a bit louder than competitors, but works well and has good variable controls that seem well constructed, save for a few other quibbles of its design -
- The beaters/mixing wands themselves are longer than most (since they have to connect through the air mover) and they are more difficult to insert properly.
- The heater is basically a hair dryer that blows warm/hot air at the mixing area - Strangely it only seems to blow air from the back side of the vented area - It seems like this would limit its ability to warm things in a mixing bowl. Turning on the warmer adds a hairdryer-like sound/noise to an already noisy operation.
Overall an OK mixer for the money, but the heating feature adds noise and build complexity with mixed results.

Lots of Ports and Connectivity - Not small enough
on October 10, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Platinum USB-C Dock is a great addition to the "Port Desert" that is the current line of 2016-2019 MacBook Pros - But it almost resembles a docking station rather than a port hub.
I like that the dock is cabled so that it can be used on either side of the 4-port MacBook Pros (13 or 15") without orientation difficulty, but it seems like kind of a large device considering that its competitors have fit almost this same number of ports on devices half the size that can directly attach to the MacBook.
In testing the port connectivity was good, and the SD card reader had good read-write response, and I was even able to boot to an external USB thumb drive with the hub, and didn't notice any performance issues. If you're looking for a large, well-built docking station-like hub for your legacy/traditional ports, this is a great device to use!

Forget about vacuuming for up to a month. The Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty XL combines the convenience of a self-empty base + IQ Navigation total home mapping for complete, efficient cleaning with the performance of Shark suction and self-cleaning brushroll. After each cleaning session, your robot vacuum automatically empties into the bagless base, which holds up to a month of dirt and debris.

Shark steps up to the Self-Cleaning Cleaner!
on September 30, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The new Shark IQ series had me interested from the start - Already an owner and user of two other "Robot vacuums" from the "other guys", but not yet knowing the joy of the self-cleaning bot vac, we decided to try this one out. Our comparisons between this and its competition vary, as our other robot vacuums are both the high-end, and low-end models from the largest maker of these devices...
The Shark IQ handles multiple floor types well - Our first floor transitions from simulated hardwood, textured vinyl, to thick carpet throughout its sprawl, and this Shark model has the task of keeping it all debris-free! The biggest advantage for us was the vacuum's ability to empty itself automatically mid-clean, as thanks to a small dog and a 5-year-old in this house, debris is plentiful and sometimes overwhelms the incumbent vacuum before half the job is done.
The IQ base does a great job at clearing the unit for continued operation, and has a very intuitive clearing mechanism for when we need to empty it into the bin. I"m impressed at how much more convenient this makes the system in general. (The literature makes it seem that you can go almost a month between bin dumps, but in reality, in my house, this is a weekly clearance.)
The vacuum itself does a good job of cleaning, and with the app you can program multiple-pass routines and other special functions, but it's not quite as effective in single-pass cleaning as it's competitors, some of which are twice as expensive as this unit however...
My only complaint is the barrier technology Shark has decided to employ- With the robot you'll get a "roll" of this barrier "tape" to deploy throughout your floors where you don't want the vacuum going - We use the laser-based barriers from the competing vacuums to keep our robots out of the desk area in my office for example - Barring the devices from becoming entangled in the extension cords, surge protectors, and computer cables therein. This barrier product seemed to sit OK (its very heavy, magnetic-seeming rubberized stripping) but its not adhesive-backed nor does it have any other way to be fastened down - And unlike the laser-based barriers of the competition, this stuff gets moved, kicked, tripped on, etc and didn't hold up in my home office. I'm not sure how I'll keep this vacuum out of my office's sensitive areas as there is no alternative nor is there an improved/enhanced version of this barrier anywhere to help.
Great vacuum that solves the key problem with robot vacs (capacity) but with a horrible barrier solution!

Excellent compact blender and drink toolset!
on September 30, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
First let me say that the NutriBullet system I evaluated was one of the most versatile and compact systems of its quality level I've ever reviewed or owned.
The system started as a smoothie-focused product but this seems to be one of their forays into a multi-purpose blending system. The kit includes two cups (24 and 32oz) for smoothies/shakes/individual portions, and a VERY large half gallon (64oz) main blender pitcher which, while plastic, seemed VERY durably constructed. We've had no issues with the hardware since starting to use the system almost a month ago almost daily.
The smaller cups have a separate blade/blend attachment that is constructed well, but also come with flip-cap lids for personal use on the go. The 24oz container also has a nice handle for use as a travel mug.
The real highlight of the build quality seems to be Nutribullet's new base/motor assembly. It is heavy and has good suction cups for surface stability, but also has some of the NICEST membrane-style buttons I've ever seen on a blender in this price range. I wish some of the higher-end brands could copy this button material, which seems like it will hold up better than the shinier membrane-type buttons on other devices. In fact, I wish this type of material was the new normal for lots of devices (slow cookers, air fryers, etc)...
The machine was loud, but not excessively and was about on-par for other blenders we use/evaluate. Blending was smooth and fast, but not exceptional when compared to competing blenders we also own.
All in all, if you're looking for a blending system, for the price this is a VERY nice unit with lots of attachments and uses. It will require lots of storage for all of the parts, but seems to be a reliable device that will serve you for a long time though a lot of uses.

Big machine suction power* but with cord-free versatility. The Cyclone V10 Animal Pro bagless cordless pet stick vacuum has a 40% bigger bin than the previous V8 Absolute model and up to 40 minutes of fade-free power with the soft roller cleaner head (in Suction mode 1). The new torque drive cleaner head removes more dust from carpets. The soft roller cleaner head removes fine dust and large debris from hard floors. The Cyclone V10 Animal Pro cord-free vacuum quickly transforms to a handheld vacuum for quick cleanups, spot cleaning, and cleaning difficult places.* Suction tested to ASTM F558 at the flexible inlet.

The new v10 is the perfect all-floors portable!
on September 17, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Having owned and worn out a Dyson V6 over the past several years, we knew it was time for a replacement, but we weren't ready for the improvements that had come to the Dyson cordless family!
The V10 Cyclone / Animal Pro is improved in every way, even over the existing V10 products! The enlarged canister is not only higher capacity, but the issues with opening and dumping the canister over previous generations seems to be completely resolved, with the canister now dumping forward instead of below the unit. The "scrubber" inlcuded in the process also makes cleaning out the chamber much simpler.
The attachments are plentiful in this bundle, which includes a motorhead for multi-floor use which worked great on our carpet and hard floor combo areas (about 50% of my house is hard floors and the rest is carpet, so having a decent all-in-1 head was great. We used the hard floors head on several occasions to remove dust and dirt from floors like the kitchen where a dry-mopping is sometimes required. The other included motor head is more of a furniture/drapes/stairs head with a more narrow coverage, which was great for cleaning the stair carpets in my home.
Suction is even better, and now power levels can be set and maintained without manually choosing the overdrive button from the older models, and battery life seems much improved. The choice of heads, and the primary head's features for pickup were a big difference in the system's ability to pick up larger items, and clean dusty surfaces more thoroughly.
The included wall mount is an easier-to-use setup, with the vacuum just sliding in from above now (no more awkward, spring-loaded attachment).
All in all this was an improvement in every way. We use our new V10 daily and its definitely set a gold standard for vacuums in our home.

A big improvement in SPECK styling and protection!
on August 22, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I'll start with the fact that I've not been a fan in the past of SPECK's design language - But I've always had tremendous respect for the cases build quality, and protective properties... The GRIP cases seemed ugly to me, and the Candy Shell cases were loud and shiny, and were hard to keep nice looking due to the scuffs and skids of daily use.
This new PRO case solves both problems - Durable, stylish matte finish, still thin and rugged as I expect from the Presidio line, and this all leads to better styling overall.
The phone fits tightly in the case and there are no flexible areas that allow for dust/dirt/moisture entry. The phone still works with all chargers also, so no functionality is hindered which is a problem for other rugged cases.

Typical SPECK aesthetic, some finish issues...
on August 21, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
SPECK products are normally very polished and clean designs. If you’re into their “ribbed” grip cases, they can be some of the best on the market. Their cases do a great job of preventing phone damage from drops, while avoiding the bulkiness of their core competition. This new Presidio GRIP item is no exception. Thin, grippy, rugged.
The finish on this case is a nice matte, almost rubber-looking finish with texture even between/before/after the trademark “GRIP” ridges, which aren’t QUITE as gaudy on my all-black case as they can be on other more contrasting styles.
The fit is perfect, holding the phone tightly, but easily removable, and rigid enough to not feel line those cheap silicone cases that the phone can practically flip out of. Not this case at all.
The only issue I could find, besides the design which is more of a style choice, is that my particular case had lots of exposed “seams” in the body, where the sonic weld lines from the case being molded together from multiple halves and such were clearly visible and simply sanded down/polished smooth in production - This is something usually observed on knock-off cases that aren’t genuine, though I’m sure mine was genuine since I received it from Speck products directly. Just a minor fit-and-finish issue, probably what keeps the cost of this case lower than others I’ve priced, but nevertheless a company like SPECK known for its finish quality surprised me with these little spots where I could see the body and silicone liner seams.
This case is however super durable and will be in my rotation for a while it seems.

Fast, Quiet Prints, But "Value" Build Quality
on August 10, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This printer delivers exactly what small businesses need - a small-footprint, fast B&W document printer with quiet, economic output.
The issue I had with this particular LaserJet Pro was the build quality. The access doors and paper trays seemed flimsy and at times required "wiggling" to open and close - The flimsiness of the paper guides was a constant struggle when loading with paper, and the access door to the toner cartridge felt like it could break when opening repeatedly. This construction seems more like this is a cheap inkjet printer vs. a business LaserJet.
]Aside from this poor build quality, the print output is crisp and sharp. Pages feed well and noise is very low. The printer kicks out fast prints and seems to be able to handle large documents. The catch tray for output seems to not be built for large jobs though.
I haven't used the printer enough yet to get an idea on toner economy, so stay tuned for follow-up on that front.
Good HP print quality and speed, increasingly shoddy build quality with clear influence of their value consumer products.

Awesome Gaming Mouse with HUGE Customization!
on August 10, 2019
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Logitech is my go-to for productivity accessories. The " G HERO" line of gaming devices is their premium gaming series. This G403 mouse definitely fits the bill.
The tracking surface on the mouse is very smooth, works great on bare tables or mousepads, and the tracking resolution being adjustable and switchable with software controls works great. Players of shooters and SIM games where scope or fine precision needs to be combined with faster/macro tracking will love the ability to toggle tracking resolution and configure custom toggling range in the software.
The mouse also comes with a weight that can be added to the mouse to give it more "heft" or "swing" when using it - I prefer a heavier mouse to give me more control and precision when using it. Being able to add weight really helps. I only wish the weight was a BIT heavier - It only made a marginal difference. Also the package almost hides the weight medallion in the packaging material. I had to go back through the box to find it when I realized it was included. I was "underwhelmed" with the difference it made, but it does make a difference.
The software experience was good, and I was glad to see full RGB customization of the wheel and logo backlight, having the ability to match the device to the red backlight of my Acer Nitro 5 rig.
All in all if youre looking for a wired USB mouse for gaming and general use, you can't go wrong with the HERO G403

Re-create the movie theater experience with this BenQ projector. It provides 2200 lumens to deliver a 15,000:1 contrast ratio even in bright rooms, and it produces 1920 x 1080 HD resolution to capture every detail of a scene. This BenQ projector has dual HDMI ports, so you can connect HD devices.

I currently have this projector and it has developed a problem with overheating and shutting down. Last night it shut down every 20 to 30 minutes. Is that a common problem with this model? Is there a fix?

I've only been using for about 5 weeks but haven't noticed significant heat at all.
The general tips I give for this are to make sure that your mount is not enclosed (box mounts are terrible for heat) and to ensure that its mounted a few inches from the ceiling.

If mounted against a drop ceiling in a basement, perhaps installing a fan in an adjacent panel to pull warm air away, or to blow in fresh cool air would help.

Also be sure that you're not blocking any of the vents in a mounted scenario - These puppy's gotta breathe!

Parental controls on this D-Link whole home Wi-Fi-router let you set up parameters for every child in your home.

Its possible to add another wifi extender

yes! In fact you can add any WiFi extender to this network that's compatible with AC networking, but you'll get diminished speed and additional network utilization with extenders. The COVR extenders have their own backhaul to connect to one another, but the COVR extenders are difficult to find alone. Your local Best Buy might carry them.

Is the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 13.3 compatible with the Wacom Bamboo Ink pen?

I'm unsure if the digitizer tech is Wacom compatible, but based on the fact that the pen is unpowered I would assume so. The S-Pen included works "OK" for basic note taking (if you're right handed or use your stylus with an elevated hand) but palm rejection is non-existent and the advertised tilt tech is basic at best in real-world usage. Maybe this can be tuned in settings, but the nice feature is that the pen is self-contained. A Wacom pen would NOT fit in the S-Pen silo.

I read online that there seems to be an issue with the webcam not being detected. Have any of you had any problems with the webcam not responding?

The webcam for this model supports Windows Hello and works well from my usage this weekend having received the laptop Friday. I know that when the new Windows release came out this spring, some older WIndows Hello drivers caused Webcam detection problems so maybe a previous release had problems. Seems to be working fine now.

Is this an LTE laptop? I have At&T and looking for something I can use when traveling.

This is NOT equipped with an LTE radio. Almost no consumer notebooks are capable of this. You will have better luck shopping business notebooks from Lenovo/HP/Dell with built-in LTE. Some models, like the upcoming Surface Pro (due out this fall) will have LTE connectivity based on the non-LTE version that came out this summer. There are a few others but AT&T doesn't directly carry any LTE capable notebooks anymore on my last check. MOST LTE-capable notebooks sold without the carrier will work with an AT&T SIM provisioned to the right settings.

Does this have Wireless-A or Wireless-AC? Product features says you can connect to AC, but specs state that it's Wireless-A.

Wireless AC is the current standard for Kaby-Lake level notebooks. This is the latest standard and this notebook has it. Wireless A is an early standard from the late 90s/early 2000s involving 5GHz radio signal at VERY low speeds and range. Most even semi-modern network cards also support this older standard but most for-sale notebooks and tablets and phones today support the current 802.11AC standard as well!

Is the screen anti-glare/matte display?

The screen is glossy. There is an anti-glare tint to the glass, but it is reflective - Samsung counters this uniquely by offering an extra-bright and vivid "outdoor mode" - So for a glossy touchscreen you'll be better off with this one than others, but it's not an anti-glare screen. Almost NO touchscreen laptops are!

I just received my Tone Free headset and the right ear bud does not work when I'm listening to my music, watching a movie or even when I talk but the manual said when talking left will only work. Both ear buds ONLY work when I am on youtube. Is this right

If you unpair the device and re-start pairing and only pair the MASTER identity of the device your audio issues should subside.

Only the LEFT earbud has a microphone. The RIGHT one is just there to ADD stereo when available through A2DP/APTX protocol.

Can I answer the phone with the earbud only, with the neckpiece?

With just one earbud, if its connected and paired as a single earbud this will work simply by pressing the button on the earbud.

The neckband doesn't do anything without the buds. Just charges them and helps facilitate signal between them when worn.

How do I pair this thing?

1. Fully charge the TONE Free unit with both earbuds attached.
