Amazing DLP Home Theater Projector for the price!
on December 31, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This BenQ projector is an amazing value! Definitely competitive with home theater projectors costing 2-3X what it does offered just months ago.
DLP technology is coming a long way and prices are falling - But this is the first projector I've used in my home that could replace a basic LED TV for the same spend!
In my basement setup, the projector shines bright (2200lm to be exact - A little less in eco mode, but still as brilliant as my older projector's full-bright mode!)... Offers 3-D capabilities also (I didn't know about this one until I started playing with the options and reading about it... Only requires basic polarized glasses - Kept a few pair from my last 3d theater trip and they worked great!)
This thing is also TINY compared to most home theater projectors - Its lighter, and mounts much more easily as a result.
It offers 2 HDMI inputs which is standard for this category... Most people use an HDMI splitter to the source cabinet then multiple items can share the primary input port. Even without this, I was able to easily hook up my AppleTV and Xbox to the device for native switching.
Games looked great on the display and I didn't notice any lag that seemed different from my TVs. Motion was smooth and clear for a front-projector, and color was AMAZING compared to my experience with this class.
Good zoom, I'm using it at about 80-ish inches on my basement wall. There was room to grow this in other settings, but I'm only ~7ft back with the mount, and I have installed constraints by way of shelving and cabinetry around the screen area.
All in all this is a great unit for the sub-1K class. Great brightness, color, and image controls. Would love to see more HDMI inputs, and a tilt function to the lens, but these are likely upmarket from this range of price. BenQ is really up-and-coming in this segment, and 3D was a nice surprise!

Good trimmer with OK shaver... Good Battery!
on November 1, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I've used quite a few Norelco products for personal grooming over the years, but this one is the most interesting - It offers fine trimming, adjustable guarded trimming, and shaving in one device. The system is also quite simple: It consists of the trimmer itself, a charging base and power cord, and a single adjustable trim guard.
The trim guard attaches durably and offers several levels of cut using universal guard levels common in trimmers and clippers. Using the device without the trim guard works great for precision trimming and shaving, but the shaving is a bit unusual, and only works somewhat, as its required method doesn't work well for an entire face shave.
I attempted to use the shaving function with and without shaving cream/gel and in either scenario, it lacks a closeness required to feel fully shaven. Its almost a "stubble control" shave rather than a clean shave. It requires long strokes to shave completely, which aren't as possible on the smaller areas of the face. I also found that it was only really effective if pushed against the "grain" of hair, which again is challenging in most facial shaving scenarios.
The battery life is exceptional, as I was able to use the device daily on a weeklong trip with no incremental charging, but based on your use your experience may vary.
All in all, its a good product with an OK shaving use case. Not the integrated solution I'd hoped for, but a good and versatile trimmer nonetheless.

Diverse chopper with easy cleanup and use
on October 29, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This chopper has some interesting functions - While it chops and dices vegetables as expected, we've also used its specialty blade to chop up block cheese for recipes.
This chopper does a great job, is marginally noisy (a product of its size and materials used to manufacture it), and requires that any vegetables or objects going in for chopping/dicing/mincing be cubed up into 2"x2" pieces before prep. To some, that means pre-chopping then the machine's just doing the fine work - Seems duplicative, but that's what larger food processors are for. This is for getting vegetables and other ingredients fined down to appropriate size for mixing, soups, etc. It does this job well. I was delighted that it worked for cheeses as we recently broke our trusty cheese grater and a recipe called for shredded block sharp cheddar. We weren't ready. The Viva saved the day.
Overall this is a great processor with lots of uses for its size and very simple cleanup. Definitely a good addition to the kitchen arsenal in the mid-range.

An "OK" AC Router trying to get in on Mesh trends
on October 28, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
D-Link makes good routers.
This router is a good router.
D-Link sees competitors coming up with brilliant MESH network concepts, so they wanted to get in to the business buy creating the COVR system. Just to clarify - this is NOT Mesh wifi - Its a ROUTER and EXTENDER setup.
The product lit and package tout "Parental controls" - What they really mean is "site blocking by MAC address" - No scheduled access, device group pause, or usage quotas that are STANDARDS in everyone else's parental controls on Mesh setups. Again, this is NOT a Mesh setup, but its definitely trying to compete with them, albeit poorly.
Don't get me wrong, the included base router is a BEAST! Has excellent controls for a traditional router, and coverage is great. If you live in a house like mine where your router location isn't central, and you've previously required "MESH" setups to distribute Wi-Fi well throughout the house, this router MAY work well for you, but don't expect the "Mesh" level of coverage or consistent speed across your square footage.

Pour wine without removing the cork by using the Coravin Model Two wine system. The durable needle pierces the cork so you can pour, and then the cork reseals when the needle is removed to preserve the remaining wine. This Coravin Model Two wine system comes with two capsules that let you pour up to 30 glasses of wine.

Elegant Aerator and Pouring Accessory!
on October 28, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
We love wine in my house, but we don't always entertain and sometimes we want just a glass. Getting a quality Aerator without corking is a welcome change to our typical wine wasting ways.
The product is EXTREMELY well constructed, works flawlessly on different bottle sizes, and is easy to operate once you get the hang of it.
The pour rate will be correctable with a different high-flow needle offered by Coravin. Smart stuff since different pour rates might be a preference, but at this price both should probably be included in the package.
I wish a better carrying case/storage case was made available for the device. The included bottle sheath works OK for storage of the aerator, but they make hard cases and I'd pay a little more to get one with my kit.
Overall this is an interesting product that works perfectly and should last a long time based on exceptional industrial design and quality.

Great Design, Compact with BIG Sound!
on October 28, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I'd never heard of this brand before, but I want to see more from them now! This thing produces ROOM FILLING sound and great range!
The speaker is small, has really nice semi-retro controls with brushed brass accents, and is HEAVY but what I thought was cabinet heft must also be partly due to magnets inside driving deep bass and crystal clear highs... This is an elegant, well built cabinet that contributes to the amazing output of this device.
I wouldn't call this thing a "Bass blaster" but that's not the intent here - Its a "reference sound" that you get - Rich, full mids and lows, with precise and crisp highs that (to me) deliver also. The bass is rich and detailed, but is not so deep that it gets muddy. The midrange is good, but most speakers this size get a little mud in the middle, and this one is better than most.
The power cord was surprisingly a standard 2-prong cord which means replaceability isn't a problem should it be damaged, and the power supply is fully integrated into the main box. The other nice thing for global travelers such as I am, is that the box includes a standard US and an EU AC plug.
Overall this thing is QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY! Sound, packaging, industrial design, and battery life are all excellent! Its an unusual form factor for portable Bluetooth audio, but if its your style, the output won't disappoint!

Great brightness! Quiet! Split Screen!
on October 4, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I've used many EPSON projectors from their higher business lines, and some of their more basic units.
When it comes to presentation/business projectors, this is a VERY nicely equipped model. It has audio, but its the kind of audio quality you'd expect from a 1W integrated speaker.
The bulb seems pretty strong - VERY bright, even in window-lit and fluorescent-lit rooms. It really shines in a darkened room, but I found the default brightness to be too much for such a scenario. The ECONOMY setting works better for dark conference rooms (or windowless rooms where the lights are cut for a presentation). This will also inadvertently extend the bulb life to over 10K hours!
The unit itself is quite small and portable and has BARELY NOTICEABLE fan noise. This thing is quieter than any other I've seen or tested.
Considering the segment its produced for, the 1280X800 native (or pushed to 1440X1050) resolution is adequate and typical for the use case. Setting this thing to 1280x720 and using it with some movies was actually quite good also. I had good motion and picture quality when using it for movies, but likely not the state-of-the-art if your goal is a value projector for your basement projector rig. The replacement lamps for this unit run between $40-60 though and with potential 10K hour life, its not unheard of to use this as a permanently mounted entertainment screen, as long as you've got alternatives for audio and 720p resolution is your goal. (again, it looks really good and works well for what its capable of).
I enjoyed playing with the split-screen function (multi-input) which would be useful in a conference room scenario where room-based technologies and local presenters wanted to share the big screen. Maybe in multi-camera video conferences or the like.
In short this is a great, good looking business projector that's portable and durable. Has some interesting differentiated features, and works as intended, as well as offering lifecycle costs well below some of its competitors.

A perfect upgrade from the WRT series for gamers!
on September 27, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
With the KILLER technology built-in, this router can prioritize and ELIMINATE latency with an appropriate KILLER-equipped network card in a gaming PC or laptop. Otherwise, its very similar to the WRT3200ACM released late last year by Linksys. Like its blue sibling, it has FANTASTIC wireless coverage and easy app-based manageability with the Linksys app and is DD-WRT capable, but I'm unaware of any other firmwares that offer the KILLER capabilities in the stock ROM.
I had the opportunity to test the router's eSATA port with an older WD Studio for Mac drive, and I was BLOWN AWAY by the drive read/write performance (I also had decent performance from USB 3.0 drives connected to the more traditional USB port on the router).
The industrial design on this is identical to its WRT3200 predecessor, but the solid black actually seems MORE at home in an office as well as near the gaming center.
All in all if you're looking for a specialized gaming router, this is the one to have now, especially if you have KILLER capabilities on your rig.

Great camera with great HomeKit integration
on September 27, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The Omna 180 was a snap to set up! Its smaller than I thought it would be and has a VERY sharp 180-degree coverage area. The motion detection works very well in my testing, and the video is crisp and clear.
This wouldn't make a great nanny cam, as its industrial design is clearly that of a camera, but is great for keeping an eye on a house during the day, where pets and other happenings need to be checked in on.
Setting up the device and app was a VERY quick exercise and HomeKit integrates Siri and other iOS-centric features seamlessly as part of the same setup as the app.
The audio quality when using the two-way communication is limited, but this is NOT a primary use case of the device. I'd love to see a comparable outdoor camera as this would be a great security device for outside the home also.

"Me-too" KabyLake flipbook with the usual features
on August 20, 2017
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Summary:
While Samsung excels at premium materials and AMAZING screens, this notebook falls flat based on some current "standards" it doesn't completely ignore, but its doing them wrong...
Out-of-box Experience:
This notebook is well packaged, and definitely has premium packaging. Unboxing was a snap, and the notebook itself immediately feels premium in the hand. The only unusual happening was that there's a slot in the package for the S-Pen, but the pen was shipped inside its silo in the notebook. Otherwise there were no issues and the notebook is packed well.
Body/Design/First Impressions
I'd seen this notebook on the display shelf at Best Buy, and when in-store, it didn't impress me. Perhaps this is because its an unassuming design, or that it appeared to be a $1100 laptop made of plastic, but its also likely that its a VERY standard/simple aesthetic. It wasn't until I held the laptop myself that I realized this thing was MADE OF ALL METAL!! In store it seemed plastic but upon getting my own I realized its just two different tones/adonization of Aluminum (or a similar-feeling alloy). The palmrest area and keyboard surround are a black metal while the outer body is more of a "Platinum" or "Pewter" color. The proportions of this machine are what I'd expect from a 13"-class machine in this day, and the layout of the screen/keyboard/ports/etc. are where I'd expect them to be.
Screen:
This is a Samsung premium notebook - Of course the 13" screen is GORGEOUS!! The colors are vibrant and the color profiles are adjustable in the included Samsung settings app. This thing has an outdoor mode that JUST WORKS. Even in the sunshine.
This really is the sweet-spot for convertible notebooks. 12" devices are just a bit too small, and It seems that with the right bezel-reduction techniques these things make both great NOTEBOOKS and usable TABLETS when folded backward. Samsung clearly understands this well and the Notebook 9 Pro is no exception, but the screen bezels, while perfect on the top and sides for being slim but grippable when in tablet mode, leave MUCH to be desired on the bottom/hinge side. This thing is almost 1.5" wide at the bottom, and it KILLS the whole style of the notebook. With what these guys are doing in Chromebooks and the Galaxy S phones, you'd think they'd nail a new look for screens that wasn't so fat-bottomed! If this were in support of a bottom camera, or some other new-fangled sensors/telemetry devices, or even LTE radio antennae or something I'd be all in. Alas, its just a fat empty bottom bezel.
Ports/Slots:
One of the other areas of note is the port offerings on the device. As per anti-Apple regulations, this device is thin/slim and nice and light, and offers full-size USB 3.1 ports (two actually, and on the SAME SIDE! - albeit pretty close together, keeping anything but standard size cables and thumb drives from being employed simultaneously). There IS a USB Type-C port as well, but in someone's infinite wisdom, its NOT THE CHARGING PORT!!! Instead we're given a paltry, skinny, thinnest-one-not-made-by-ASUS sized DC connector that's just BOUND to break and screams I BELONG ON A CHEAP ENTRY LEVEL NETBOOK! Even the Chromebooks made by Samsung charge via USB-C - How can their flagship notebook skip this? Of course the Type-C port CAN be used for charging, but no AC adapter is provided for this. I've actually been using a Targus 3rd party charger to do just that, and the battery charging is just as fast and less likely to be snapped off. The other problem is that there's only one Type-C port, and its NOT THUNDERBOLT compatible! That's right, a $1000+ premium notebook does NOT come with the Thunderbolt standard compatibility which excludes this notebook from HUNDREDS of peripheral uses and docking capabilities... Pro?
The machine DOES come with a full-size HDMI port, twin USB-A 3.1 ports, a headphone port, and a mIcro-SD card reader. The micro-SD card seems to make sense on Chromebooks, tablet form factors like Surface, and cheap laptops, but why don't these PRO laptops include full-size SD card readers as they did just a few short years ago? That standard hasn't and WONT change for video and photo professionals... One of the targets of these PRO systems... What gives? This isn't a Samsung-only complaint.
Pen/Inking:
One of the most marketed features of this device is its included S-Pen... Samsung's famous-on-mobiles pen/ink platform that offers stow-away pen functionality with 4096-level pressure sensitivity and tilt detection inking. I tested the pen functions RIGHT AWAY when setting up the device, and Samsung has included a nifty automatic inking interface for their own apps that support it. No nice integration with standard ink functions which work well enough, but one thing I observed amongst all of the pen apps (Microsoft AND Samsung) was that palm rejection is NON EXISTENT! I'm left-handed and this is a NON STARTER for me! Also the pen is thin and semi-rectangular instead of round, making it small to hold in your fingers in typical writing posture unlike the excellent pens from Wacom, HP, Microsoft and Dell. This pen slips around in my fingers and its button is awkward to use for eraser functions, etc.
Specs:
The 7th Core i7 processor in the 9Pro is fast. I loaded software and pushed hard with CorelDraw, Affinity Designer, Video streaming apps (Hulu, Netflix) and other browser activities simultaneously and it was AT LEAST as good as my other 'Kaby Lake' i7 experiences. There are two shortcomings in the specs and those are storage options and RAM. Since this is a hard-soldered RAM board, only offering 8GB at this price seems silly. EVERY ONE COMPETITOR offering similar pricing for their flagship 13 is doing so with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM (Ahem, HP/Dell)... At least offer a "souped up" model for a few hundred bucks more!
Conclusion:
The nifty S-Pen, that doesn't deliver, being the stand-out "Pro" feature makes me think this very good looking little guy has no market with which it will satisfy, especially since Sammy seemed to forget the other pro features (Thunderbolt, Full-size SD card, creator-ready specs for storage/RAM) that would have made this a MacBook Pro 13 killer. While I'm being critical of THESE features, it is a solid, VERY fast, very good looking and working notebook with a vivid screen, beautiful and tactile backlit keyboard, and typical, professional looking styling with a very sturdy all-metal and rubber chassis. This will do well for right-handed students to take notes and have a mid-grade laptop experience, but competitors will offer more bang for their buck, and pros looking for a photo or video editing mobile solution or even a creative apps runner should look elsewhere,

Re-create the movie theater experience with this BenQ projector. I currently have this projector and it has developed a problem with overheating and shutting down. Last night it shut down every 20 to 30 minutes. Is that a common problem with this model? Is there a fix?

I've only been using for about 5 weeks but haven't noticed significant heat at all.
The general tips I give for this are to make sure that your mount is not enclosed (box mounts are terrible for heat) and to ensure that its mounted a few inches from the ceiling.

If mounted against a drop ceiling in a basement, perhaps installing a fan in an adjacent panel to pull warm air away, or to blow in fresh cool air would help.

Also be sure that you're not blocking any of the vents in a mounted scenario - These puppy's gotta breathe!

Its possible to add another wifi extender

yes! In fact you can add any WiFi extender to this network that's compatible with AC networking, but you'll get diminished speed and additional network utilization with extenders. The COVR extenders have their own backhaul to connect to one another, but the COVR extenders are difficult to find alone. Your local Best Buy might carry them.

Is the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 13.3 compatible with the Wacom Bamboo Ink pen?

I'm unsure if the digitizer tech is Wacom compatible, but based on the fact that the pen is unpowered I would assume so. The S-Pen included works "OK" for basic note taking (if you're right handed or use your stylus with an elevated hand) but palm rejection is non-existent and the advertised tilt tech is basic at best in real-world usage. Maybe this can be tuned in settings, but the nice feature is that the pen is self-contained. A Wacom pen would NOT fit in the S-Pen silo.

I read online that there seems to be an issue with the webcam not being detected. Have any of you had any problems with the webcam not responding?

The webcam for this model supports Windows Hello and works well from my usage this weekend having received the laptop Friday. I know that when the new Windows release came out this spring, some older WIndows Hello drivers caused Webcam detection problems so maybe a previous release had problems. Seems to be working fine now.

Is this an LTE laptop? I have At&T and looking for something I can use when traveling.

This is NOT equipped with an LTE radio. Almost no consumer notebooks are capable of this. You will have better luck shopping business notebooks from Lenovo/HP/Dell with built-in LTE. Some models, like the upcoming Surface Pro (due out this fall) will have LTE connectivity based on the non-LTE version that came out this summer. There are a few others but AT&T doesn't directly carry any LTE capable notebooks anymore on my last check. MOST LTE-capable notebooks sold without the carrier will work with an AT&T SIM provisioned to the right settings.

Does this have Wireless-A or Wireless-AC? Product features says you can connect to AC, but specs state that it's Wireless-A.

Wireless AC is the current standard for Kaby-Lake level notebooks. This is the latest standard and this notebook has it. Wireless A is an early standard from the late 90s/early 2000s involving 5GHz radio signal at VERY low speeds and range. Most even semi-modern network cards also support this older standard but most for-sale notebooks and tablets and phones today support the current 802.11AC standard as well!

Is the screen anti-glare/matte display?

The screen is glossy. There is an anti-glare tint to the glass, but it is reflective - Samsung counters this uniquely by offering an extra-bright and vivid "outdoor mode" - So for a glossy touchscreen you'll be better off with this one than others, but it's not an anti-glare screen. Almost NO touchscreen laptops are!

Listen to music hands-free with this LG wireless headset. It lets you answer or ignore a call with voice commands, and the wireless earbuds charge when they're resting inside the neckband, ensuring they're ready for use. The neckband of this LG wireless headset provides vibration alerts for incoming calls and texts, so you'll never miss a message.

I just received my Tone Free headset and the right ear bud does not work when I'm listening to my music, watching a movie or even when I talk but the manual said when talking left will only work. Both ear buds ONLY work when I am on youtube. Is this right

If you unpair the device and re-start pairing and only pair the MASTER identity of the device your audio issues should subside.

Only the LEFT earbud has a microphone. The RIGHT one is just there to ADD stereo when available through A2DP/APTX protocol.

Can I answer the phone with the earbud only, with the neckpiece?

With just one earbud, if its connected and paired as a single earbud this will work simply by pressing the button on the earbud.

The neckband doesn't do anything without the buds. Just charges them and helps facilitate signal between them when worn.

How do I pair this thing?

1. Fully charge the TONE Free unit with both earbuds attached.

2. Before removing the earbuds, turn the neckband switch ON then wear it around your neck.

3. Detach each earbud and insert them in the appropriate ear.

4. Hold the LEFT earbud's button until you get a tone and audio queue that its ready for pairing...

5. Go to your Bluetooth settings on the target device and look for "HBSF110 Master" and follow the prompts. ONLY PAIR THE MASTER!

6. Follow all of the prompts then you should be able to use it as an audio output device as with any other bluetooth connected peripheral (different based on the type of device you have. Enjoy!
