Amazing build and quality for the money...
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
My wife was the primary reviewer of our new curling iron, but she had a few key points to make when reviewing and using this for the first few days once she got it out and set up to replace her current curler:
- The build quality is much more premium than most curling irons in this price range.
- The heat settings seemed to actually do something on this unit instead of some where they seemed to have no effect on the output heat.
- This iron gets HOT so if you're looking for a good high-heat iron, this one will do nicely.
- This iron has a nice flexible cord, unlike some cheaper models with firmer power cords, this made it easy to navigate around her head while using without worrying about the stiff cord getting in the way.
All in all for her hair type, this was a great pick. Better control, good weight, and great results. This is her new go-to curling iron!

Trusty ol' Block Software... Strange behaviors
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Let me start by saying that I've trusted H&R Block's software with my Tax Returns since the TaxCut-branded days. This is always my go-to software for ensuring that I don't miss any deduction or calculation opportunities, and as a small business owner AND former rental property owner, this has been a valuable piece of software.
With that, lets get into the ONE thing that kept this from being a 5-star review. H&R Blocks software seems to be able to be "tricked" into showing you different refund/owe calculations when you make and correct mistakes. Several times when filing for 2020, I would accidentally enter a 1099 twice, then correct. What's interesting is that my displayed "refund amount" would change from the before duplication amount, to something where more taxes were owed than before once corrected. What this tells me is that there are bugs in the calculation software that seem to present themselves and don't self-correct. I tested this by fixing all of my mistakes in a file, then creating a new file and entering everything correctly the first time, and there was a $140 refund difference.
My advice? This is still one of the best filing advice software products out there. Not much has changed for 2020, but as you're working pay attention to the changes happening in your refund based on what you're doing and don't be afraid to start over in certain sections to ensure your data is correctly entered. I think there are some "number stacking" bugs that don't get corrected on incorrect entries, or the way it calculates certain rules is affected when you back out and re-enter certain data.
One highlight for 2020 seems to be that state tax software seems to download and install more quickly. I appreciated this considering that I don't always have a lot of time to sit down to my annual tax return process and this just made things generally faster. Thanks Block! See you next year!

Good doorbell cam for the anti-cloud crowd
on February 16, 2021
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This Lorex doorbell cam will complement closed-circuit systems installed in homes and businesses nicely. Its not a cloud-connected cam like those from Ring or Nest, but works in a similar way. Its able to record to a memory card and has decent night vision and fair video quality by day. The camera doesn't do well with sun glare on winter evenings where the sun is beaming into the lens. The glare makes videos almost unwatchable, and there would be no way to identify someone during the hour or two where this lighting occurs. Just silhouettes in the glare beam... The playback quality is good, but I didn't get a chance to try any "pre-recorded" messages, but this may be an interesting feature for a small business or office using this system. There was a small light emitted from the bottom of the doorbell, but I couldn't really figure out what this was for - It wasn't enough light to light up the front porch or walkway, and didn't illuminate the door or the doorbell itself, which has a backlit RING button. Not sure what this was for, save for aesthetics.
All in all I would recommend to someone looking for an offline solution that didn't have a larger ecosystem to integrate with.

The improvement we wanted but didn't expect.
on December 29, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
The new Bridge 12.3 Pro + is a plus in every way conceivable.
It has a better layout of keys, improved even-ness to backlighting, USB Type-C charging, and a MUCH improved touchpad to it's predecessor.
This is finally a TRUE converter for your Surface Pro 4,5 (2017), 6 or 7 into a full-on Laptop.
There are a few quirks:
- There is no FN-Lock feature, so if you need ALT-Fx capabilities in terminal emulators and other apps, this keyboard cannot supply it. The F-Keys default to their media/control functions and there's no way to change this. The only way to use Fn keys is to hold the Fn key while pressing. Unfortunately, Alt-FN is also the trackpad power toggle, so Alt-F4, for example, won't work. This is only a hinderance for several old business apps, so this will only affect certain use cases.
- The keyboard is NON-functional in BIOS or during Windows Setup. This will only affect a limited number of use cases, but was problematic when trying to use the keyboard to help my Daughter set up her new Surface Pro 5. I ended up going back to the keyboard cover during setup and config, then setting up the Brydge unit afterward again.
The battery life, even with backlighting is WEEKS of regular use. This thing is an unexpected new version with every improvement imaginable so its a FULLY RECOMMEND from me!

Excellent blue filter and screen protection!
on December 29, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
My daughter uses her phone way too late into the night. She loses sleep with it. It keeps her awake. I've been looking for a solution beyond setting her night mode/blue light compensation in iOS directly, as she notices this and turns it off.
I applied this new filter to her new iPhone 12 Mini, and I was able to see a dramatic difference in her late-night screen time right away. Using the phone for a little bit at night is OK, but this allowed her to still get tired and sleep well after using it. Not only that, but it's an excellent tempered glass screen protector. Despite Apple's claims, this screen is scratchable and VERY breakable, and these protectors help keep that beautiful screen looking new, and preventing harmful blue light from affecting sleepiness and sleep patterns.
An excellent product that performs perfectly.

The best spot cleaner we've ever owned!
on December 29, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
Finally! A cordless pet stain remover that WORKS and WORKS WELL!!
This Bissel not only has excellent agitation capabilities, but holds the right amount of solution and can clean a pretty good size area with one bottle. The battery life is excellent, and lasts for an entire house of spot cleanups (a norm in a house with a puppy or a small dog who still has accidents, not to mention the messes that the kids make!). It comes with two bottles of solution to get you started but the price isn't bad for replacement solution.
We've used several other spot cleaners and canister steamers from "the other guys" and they all failed or leaked within the first 3-6 months. This one is made extremely well, but also has the right components to avoid failure, including no hose or canister separation like some others.
All in all, this is THE spot cleaner I will recommend from now on.

Decent natural sound, strange design...
on November 30, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
These AUSounds headphones sound great. Let me start there.
The audio output was excellent from something with such small drivers, and mids, as well as high frequency sounds were crisp and clear. Bass was a little on the light side, but that's what I expect from this price range, and I thought it resembled many "reference sound" tunings I've experienced in the past. There is support for AAC and SBC codecs, but not Apt-X which seems to be reserved for higher price tags. The Noise Cancelling is active, and worked great in my trials, though I question the target market with a product like this (ideally for runners, other workouts) where ANC tends to be less popular. I wasn't able to get a "hear-through" mode working to use the ANC to enhance hearing the environment while music or media played, which I thought would be more important to runners than the cancellation iteself.
Lets talk about the design of these headphones... A "behind the neck" band that seems to be going the way of the dodo with the advent of "true wireless" buds these days, even when ear hooks are involved - I didn't think anyone was still pushing this design which screams: "I'm from 2014!" The real issue I have with the design is twofold: First of all, the control buttons are on these "nodes" on the ends of the neckband instead of inline on the way up to the ears - Other brands mastered the "behind the neck" design by making the battery and inline controls part of the flow from earpiece to neckband, and any bulges were smartly aligned with a single flowing "curve" from one ear hook or bud to the other. These headphones have a neckband with two large bulges on the front, then a thinner ear-bound cable that protrudes in a different direction from each bulge to the ear hooks (and eventually the buds themselves). On top of this strange looking design, the control buttons (on the right end of the neckband) are placed on the INSIDE of the neckband. You know... Against your NECK instead of outward facing where they could be pressed while being worn. This led me to halfway disassembling my setup each time I wanted to make an adjustment until getting used to the button layout. Not ergonomic nor natural.
The second design "why" comes in the form of the earbuds themselves. While I love the ear hook and bud design in general, I found the magnetic feature, where the two buds could be held together around the user's neck when not in use, to be a strange design choice thanks to the wired ear hook design and the fact that the buds will connect with one another, but then hang twisted due to their weight and the hooks not sitting against your chest. This was a strange feature to adopt on headphones with such a strange design. Still puzzled by that one.
The headset comes with a microfiber pouch for a case, which can contain the included USB Type C charging cable also - Its an A-C cable, which I understand since most laptops and charging devices are still USB Type A, but I would have appreciated a USB-C to C cable just as much, being a Dell Precision and MacBook Pro user myself where USB-A ports are a thing of the past.

An excellent, yet thick, alternative to Apple's KB
on November 10, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
I've had a Logitech keyboard folio, in addition to Apple's keyboard product, for every iPad Pro I've owned (my current one is my third, and the first of the "new" 11" form factor). This keyboard folio works perfectly with the NEW iPad Air 10.9 (2020 design) as well as the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro 11" - Which I own. This thing is made tough with strong polycarbonate frame and keyboard, but its covered in a soft-touch, textured, almost fabric-like material, giving it a woven finish. Its very reminiscent of some of Google's cases for the Pixel line in finish, as its gives the impression of fabric, while still being plastic and looks like it would hold up to dirt and debris pretty well.
As I mentioned, the frame is strong, holds the iPad securely, and (unlike the Apple solution) protects the sides and corners of the iPad.
Not only does the folio hold the iPad snugly and securely, but it also attaches the "Smart Connector" to the keyboard portion through the tablet case, so this folio uses Apple's native connector for Keyboard power and connection. This is a RARE find in 3rd party accessories and shows how closely Logi must have collaborated with Apple to develop this. They've done this before, but seemed to abandon the practice in the past few products, so I'm thrilled to see it back in such a comfy and slick form factor.
The folio also has a "flap strap" which magnetically secures it closed, and can also be folded back when in-use to stay out of the way and clasps both to the keyboard to hold things closed, and to the back of the tablet case to keep things tidy while in active use. This also provides a safety to the Apple Pen, which charges on top of the iPad Pro and Air, and is held on by this strap when closed. Speaking of that, the Apple Pen docking to the iPad Pro/Air is fully supported by this case, another rarity in some 3rd party folios.
This thing is thick as the keyboard is a bit bulkier than Apple's style-defining Magic Keyboard for iPad, but its also significantly more protective. This is now my go-to case for the iPad when I'm going to be on the road in harsh conditions or when traveling using it regularly on planes (Once that becomes normal again) and when camping where I bring the iPad as my only computer because its battery can hold up and I sometimes need to connect to the office when getting away.

Finally! Decent charging in-vehicle!
on November 10, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
With all of that DC current available in a vehicle, restricting the built-in USB charging to 5W was always troubling to me. These modern phones charge like tablets, and people use their tablets (and even small laptops) in vehicles all of the time. Plus, in the car, when my phone battery is about to go, I want a fast charge on a short trip usually - Thats where this product serves a divine purpose.
This thing is about the same size as other DC plug chargers out there, so I'm assuming its taking advantage of recent development in GAN charger tech. This outputs enough wattage to charge a small USB-C-based MacBook or iPad - But can also charge two modern iPhone or Android smartphones at full charging speed. This means quick top-ups while on the road. Exactly what today's tech consumers need!
In my tests my iPhone XS Max was charged quickly, and I was able to charge both my iPad Pro 11 (2018) and my 2020 MacBook Pro 13" with the unit (separately, not at the same time). The iPad charged normally with the adapter. The Mac was able to maintain its battery charge, but did not receive battery charge during the connected session, as 36w isn't enough to charge the MacBook Pro (and I think only 29w is made available to it due to Apple charging settings). My PixelBook Go experienced a similar phenomenon, which is still a feat, avoiding bulky AC inverters and carrying large bulky power bricks on road trips.
It will slow charge large devices and fast charge small devices. An excellent accessory for both quick top-ups and road trip power.

Excellent traditional wired security system
on November 10, 2020
Posted by: GadgetGuy1981
from Lebanon, OH
This SWANN kit gives you everything you need to hard-wire a complete indoor/outdoor solution that doesn't rely on the cloud, and can store your recordings on premises for those looking to avoid trusting your footage and home/personal perimeter activities to one of the cloud-based security companies and whomever they might be acquired by as the industry consolidates.
This kit is pretty deluxe - everything you need to install the included 4 cameras in the box. It took me a while to arrange the cameras in installable places that gave me the visibility coverage I needed.
I started with the outdoor cameras. These were lightweight, small footprint and EASY to mount! They have great positionability with their ball-mount, and very flexible applications due to a small base. Some of them are mounted to soffits, some to side walls of the garage doorframe, and other places as needed in both inverted and upright positions.
The cameras themselves are pretty incredible with both heat detection (which worked well in my tests - Particularly in the darker areas of my yard when objects got close enough) to better motion sensing than I experienced with competing cameras that these SWANN models replaced. Night vision was just OK, as it sets off a white light when used, and doesn’t use IR and the siren-like alerts seem like a good deterrent but likely won’t get a lot of use in my use case, since we’re hardly ever in a position to catch someone live and need to scare them off the property. Our use case is more to have a recording of what happens in case there is an event...
The included WiFi indoor camera is of less interest to me, as constantly recording indoor activities is more or a niche interest for most, but in testing, worked well to track movement and has a magnetic base for some “interesting” mounting options. It connected well to my WiFi, even when 40+ft away from the router and with several walls between. It has excellent video quality and much easier placement/movement since it only requires powered outlet connectivity. It does NOT work with the DVR and really is just an add-on product and doesn’t work with the rest of the products at all. Requires a mobile device and app to operate. It's an odd inclusion.
The DVR itself has 1TB of storage, which sounds like quite a bit but higher end systems are coming with 2TB these days, but I’ve never needed more than 1TB without a desire to hoard old video data beyond 2-3 weeks for some reason. In the “security” use case, 1TB will meet your needs. If you’re looking at this from a “nosy neighbor” or “surveillance” use case, more storage will be needed to retain footage over time, but why would you really want to do that unless you have a business case? The DVR connects easily to any HDMI display, and can be connected wirelessly to the network via the included USB WiFi dongle, which allows for flexibility for installation away from the business or home router where a display can be accessed.
The included wiring and mounting hardware converts the required power and data connections to the cameras into a very thin, pliable wire that can be tucked into siding, and slips under/between door seals nicely to ease in the process of routing outdoor cameras back indoors. Fishing this wire through walls is much easier than bulkier wire sets required by some of the competition. There’s also plenty of wire included to drive connectivity to the DVR from all of the out points of the cameras.
I didn’t add the system to my Google Home/Nest setup, as I wasn’t sure what the value add was there and there’s very little mention of it in the instructions or on SWANN’s website. I assume there is just voice command abilities as I have read nothing about having the ability to view these camera feeds on Nest Hub devices or Chromecast, which would be the only valuable use. I dont do Alexa at all, so no way to check on that.
This is a comprehensive traditional digital security system. The reliability and video quality of wired closed-circuit connections can’t be disputed but the wireless guys are catching up fast. This system will definitely meet your needs if you know what you’re getting into installation-wise. An excellent system overall!

Re-create the movie theater experience with this BenQ projector. It provides 2200 lumens to deliver a 15,000:1 contrast ratio even in bright rooms, and it produces 1920 x 1080 HD resolution to capture every detail of a scene. This BenQ projector has dual HDMI ports, so you can connect HD devices.

I currently have this projector and it has developed a problem with overheating and shutting down. Last night it shut down every 20 to 30 minutes. Is that a common problem with this model? Is there a fix?

I've only been using for about 5 weeks but haven't noticed significant heat at all.
The general tips I give for this are to make sure that your mount is not enclosed (box mounts are terrible for heat) and to ensure that its mounted a few inches from the ceiling.

If mounted against a drop ceiling in a basement, perhaps installing a fan in an adjacent panel to pull warm air away, or to blow in fresh cool air would help.

Also be sure that you're not blocking any of the vents in a mounted scenario - These puppy's gotta breathe!

Its possible to add another wifi extender

yes! In fact you can add any WiFi extender to this network that's compatible with AC networking, but you'll get diminished speed and additional network utilization with extenders. The COVR extenders have their own backhaul to connect to one another, but the COVR extenders are difficult to find alone. Your local Best Buy might carry them.

Is the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 13.3 compatible with the Wacom Bamboo Ink pen?

I'm unsure if the digitizer tech is Wacom compatible, but based on the fact that the pen is unpowered I would assume so. The S-Pen included works "OK" for basic note taking (if you're right handed or use your stylus with an elevated hand) but palm rejection is non-existent and the advertised tilt tech is basic at best in real-world usage. Maybe this can be tuned in settings, but the nice feature is that the pen is self-contained. A Wacom pen would NOT fit in the S-Pen silo.

I read online that there seems to be an issue with the webcam not being detected. Have any of you had any problems with the webcam not responding?

The webcam for this model supports Windows Hello and works well from my usage this weekend having received the laptop Friday. I know that when the new Windows release came out this spring, some older WIndows Hello drivers caused Webcam detection problems so maybe a previous release had problems. Seems to be working fine now.

Is this an LTE laptop? I have At&T and looking for something I can use when traveling.

This is NOT equipped with an LTE radio. Almost no consumer notebooks are capable of this. You will have better luck shopping business notebooks from Lenovo/HP/Dell with built-in LTE. Some models, like the upcoming Surface Pro (due out this fall) will have LTE connectivity based on the non-LTE version that came out this summer. There are a few others but AT&T doesn't directly carry any LTE capable notebooks anymore on my last check. MOST LTE-capable notebooks sold without the carrier will work with an AT&T SIM provisioned to the right settings.

Does this have Wireless-A or Wireless-AC? Product features says you can connect to AC, but specs state that it's Wireless-A.

Wireless AC is the current standard for Kaby-Lake level notebooks. This is the latest standard and this notebook has it. Wireless A is an early standard from the late 90s/early 2000s involving 5GHz radio signal at VERY low speeds and range. Most even semi-modern network cards also support this older standard but most for-sale notebooks and tablets and phones today support the current 802.11AC standard as well!

Is the screen anti-glare/matte display?

The screen is glossy. There is an anti-glare tint to the glass, but it is reflective - Samsung counters this uniquely by offering an extra-bright and vivid "outdoor mode" - So for a glossy touchscreen you'll be better off with this one than others, but it's not an anti-glare screen. Almost NO touchscreen laptops are!

Listen to music hands-free with this LG wireless headset. It lets you answer or ignore a call with voice commands, and the wireless earbuds charge when they're resting inside the neckband, ensuring they're ready for use. The neckband of this LG wireless headset provides vibration alerts for incoming calls and texts, so you'll never miss a message.

I just received my Tone Free headset and the right ear bud does not work when I'm listening to my music, watching a movie or even when I talk but the manual said when talking left will only work. Both ear buds ONLY work when I am on youtube. Is this right

If you unpair the device and re-start pairing and only pair the MASTER identity of the device your audio issues should subside.

Only the LEFT earbud has a microphone. The RIGHT one is just there to ADD stereo when available through A2DP/APTX protocol.

Can I answer the phone with the earbud only, with the neckpiece?

With just one earbud, if its connected and paired as a single earbud this will work simply by pressing the button on the earbud.

The neckband doesn't do anything without the buds. Just charges them and helps facilitate signal between them when worn.

How do I pair this thing?

1. Fully charge the TONE Free unit with both earbuds attached.

2. Before removing the earbuds, turn the neckband switch ON then wear it around your neck.

3. Detach each earbud and insert them in the appropriate ear.

4. Hold the LEFT earbud's button until you get a tone and audio queue that its ready for pairing...

5. Go to your Bluetooth settings on the target device and look for "HBSF110 Master" and follow the prompts. ONLY PAIR THE MASTER!

6. Follow all of the prompts then you should be able to use it as an audio output device as with any other bluetooth connected peripheral (different based on the type of device you have. Enjoy!
