To be brief, the button layout is pathetically bad. There is no story to speak of, no characters to mention, mission progression is the worst aspect of the game.
Best Parts: Fighting giant monsters is fun, and the online is decent (though no one really plays this anymore)
Worst Parts: Missions are generally broken up 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 and then 2-1...and so on. You have to beat a whole section, that is 1-1 through 1-3 for instance before the game saves. So if you lose at 1-3 lets say, you have to start ALL over. And the game is really bad at telling you how to complete an objective, so a lot of times you'll lose and not know why but still have to repeat 1-1 and 1-2 all over again for NO reason.
What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Everything
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
