An OK Experience
on November 6, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
Being a fan and avid user of the Amazon Echo, Dot and Tap, I was very curious to see how Google would execute on a similar experience.
I've used the Google Home for a few days now and my experience has been... meh, just OK.
For starters, I know it's not entirely fair to compare the current version / capabilities of the Home to the current version / capabilities of the Echo... but, Amazon has had almost a year ahead of Google and the skills and abilities of the Home are about where the Echo was a year ago.
As it stands, Home doesn't have the 'Skills' that Amazon offers. I'm having to rely on IFTTT to take care of our smart home devices using the Google Home. I've gotten spoiled talking to the Echo like it's the computer from Star Trek - and Google Home feels like it showed up to the party a year late. The voice response from the Home also reminds me of Siri's earlier days where as the Echo sounds more conversational.
Since Google has their own music service, App Store and YouTube Red - I can't see Google opening the door to other developer's APIs to use other services. Actually, one of my biggest gripes is that I can't use the home as a Bluetooth speaker - that seems like a huge oversite on Google's part.
One cool aspect of the Home is the responsive touch of the top of the device. Amazon's Echo still relies on physical button pressing and radial dial turns. So the Home looks and operates a little more snazzy than the Echo in this regard.
If you're married to the Google ecosystem, then going with the Home and riding out the growing pains might be worth it - but until they offer a service comparable to Amazon Prime where I get cloud storage, shipping, videos and music - I don't think Alexa has any reason to get jealous.

Decent 2-in-1 for Price
on November 6, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I'm writing my review now using the Acer Aspire R15 laptop. Given that, I'm mostly a Mac guy at home and a Win7 user at work, I was really curious to put Windows 10 through it's paces as well as see just how well a 2-in-1 device would work. While I've mostly enjoyed using it, it does come with some drawbacks.
Design
---------
This laptop has a beautiful and minimalist design to it. There's no disc drive, which means the machine can be made very thin - it's no Ultrabook or MacBook in terms of thinness however. The exterior totally comprised of a brushed, gunmetal color of silver - even the keyboard area. The screen is a big and beautiful 1080p resolution that really shines when watching iTunes movies in HD. The keyboard is comfortably spaced out and even includes a smaller 10-key in addition to the typical QWERTY design.
Weight was also something I wasn't prepared for. Using a MacBook Air or iPad at home and an Ultrabook at work has really spoiled me in how much I expect a PC to weigh. This thing isn't NEAR as heavy as some developer laptops I've had to use for work, but it's between 5-6 pounds. That, combined with the 15.6 size, makes this a big kahuna - so do some extra curls at the gym if you're not ready for that kind of weight.
Specs
--------
It's one thing if a laptop is beautiful - but above all else, it has to work. The Acer Aspire R15 that I got has an interesting mix of great and meh specs that equate to a good laptop for a general user and some occasional heavy usage.
Starting with the CPU, it's a dual core i7, 7th gen processor. I was a bit startled to see that it was a dual core and not a quad core. The model I opted for also included 12GB of RAM - so I was able to use Handbrake while multitasking with Edge and Office 365.
As far as ports go, there's a USB-C option, 2 USB 3 ports (1 charging) and a USB 2.0 part. Additionally, you have an HDMI port as well as an SD Card slot - which makes working with photos off our DSLR camera a breeze.
The real disappointment for me came with the hard drive. Sure, it's nice to have a 1TB hard drive, but come on - no solid state drive? I've gotten so spoiled by SSD, PCI-E and Flash drives that working with a platter drive has taken me getting used to - sure, Windows 10 has a setting that makes booting less painful - but reading and writing to the HD took longer than I was used to.
2-in-1
-------
One of the biggest draws for this item is the fact that you can fold it up and use it as a Windows 10 tablet. The 360 degree hinges also support tent mode and viewer mode as well. It's rare to find a 2-in-1 at this price with a combination of other attractive specs, such as the RAM and ports. Tent mode has made using this on the couch a joy and I like the fact that the keyboard doesn't respond when it's folded up, so when I accidentally pressed some keys, the computer thankfully ignored the keystrokes.
Overall
---------
This laptop is more than enough for general usage and with the addition of USB-C, 12GB of RAM and the tablet option - it is nice for even occasional power usage. Acer does hamper the unit down with their own bloatware (I forgot how much I hated having to uninstall it all) - but thankfully, with Windows 10 I was able to make a bootable installation on one of my thumb drives and install a vanilla version of the OS. It runs so much more smoother without McAfee and all the other junk that I'll honestly never use.
If you're in the market for a new Windows 10 PC and you're also looking for something that can be a tablet as well (come on Apple!) then this is a good place to start. Just make sure you do a clean install of the OS if you want to get the best experience possible to wipe all the pre-installed bloatware off.

Decent Router from Linksys
on October 23, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
from Dallas, TX
I was impressed with a previous router from Linksys, so I thought I'd give this one a try. I currently use a Linksys EA9500 for our house as I wanted something that could really push 4K streaming.
The WRT is a decent router and even has some nifty features that set it apart from the EA9500. It's still better than most routers out there today, but I'm still a little partial to the EA9500. One of the main selling points is the ability to use open-source Linux software with this router. I wished I had a need to play with this feature. This alone sets the WRT apart from a router for someone who wants to set-it-and-forget-it. If you don't want the ability to use the open-source option, there might be a better option out there for you.
I also found that going from the 8-gigibit ports on the EA9500 to only 4 on the WRT was limiting. I was honestly spoiled by being able to connect all my gammon consoles, Apple TV and Smart TV to the network with a dedicated line.
The eSATA port on the back of the WRT model is nice if you want to connect a hard drive via a SATA port - but I myself prefer USB 3.0 as it's more prevalent in portable hard drives for connectivity.
PROS:
* Open-Source option for deeper customization
* Tri-Band option helps manage 5GHz traffic
* eSATA ports allow for more connectivity above USB 3.0
CONS:
* Only 4 ethernet ports on the back may require a hub for more devices
* AC speed slower than EA9500
* CPU/RAM is less than EA9500
Bottom line:
This router is a great router for people who really like customizing their home networking setup. It also boasts some additional ports that could open up more connectivity options. While not as robust as the EA9500, this is a solid router and is more than enough for the casual user who only wants to stream content in an average size location.

Much more awesome than expected
on October 2, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
I've never really been a big fan of the LG-birthed design for wireless headphones that included the horse collar apparatus.
That being said, these headphones are yet another homerun from Bose - joining the wired, over-the-ear ones I currently use.
First off, the collar was less obtrusive than I had initially suspected it would be. The ear buds include a small, medium and large size to ensure the best fit.
I was a little dismayed at having to put yet another app on my phone, but I'm so glad I did. As you can see from my pictures, this thing does a phenomenal job at eliminating noise - and you can adjust it based on your needs.
One of my biggest pet peeves with wired ear bud sets is that I end up popping one of them out as I turn my head - not so with this one!
Pros:
-------
• Lightweight and comfortable
• Awesome noise reduction
• Sound output rivals wired headsets in quality
• Great for long conference calls when my 6 year old is playing "police siren" in the house
Haven't really found any cons yet - I will update my review if I find any. For now, do yourself a favor and pick up these guys! The price isn't any worse than you'd pay for a pair of Beats and, quite frankly, Bose knows audio better.

A great 2-in-1 for our house
on September 22, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
I was curious about how well the Bissel CrossWave would be since it's advertised as a vacuum and floor cleaner all-in-one.
Thanks to my 3 year old, I didn't have to wait long to find out - thanks to spilled milk on our tile floor.
For starters, this is much lighter than traditional floor cleaners which is a welcome surprise. It comes with cleaner for hardwood floors and another for multi-purpose projects, like carpet and tile.
It also comes with 3 rollover brushes: 1 designed solely for tile/hardwood and 2 multi-purposes rollers for use on tile/hardwood/carpet/rugs.
The water tank also has markings for water-to-solution mixes for both small cleanups and larger jobs.
One of the best features is the drying tray. I hated that our older carpet cleaner basically had to hang out until it dried. This comes with a drying stand so it can dry and be out of sight at the same time.
It's a bit louder than I expected, but no more than a typical vacuum and much quieter than a typical cleaner.
It cleaned up a spill effortlessly and quickly and the floor was left nice and clean with no residue of any kind. The floor was totally dry after a few minutes.
The tank, filter and roller brush disassemble quickly and painlessly to make cleaning up afterwards a breeze!
Pros:
• Lightweight design
• Vacuum & cleaner combo
• Drying stand and rollers
• Cleaning solution included
Cons:
• Debris and dirty water fill same tank - so expect some wet hair if you have pets
Overall this is an awesome combo cleaner. It's lighter and easier to use than the spot cleaner we had previously and can handle light debris cleanup, meaning the big Dyson Animal can be saved for more heavy duty cleaning! No regrets here!

Finally! The dock I've been looking for!
on August 27, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
I've been looking for a dock that could support both my iPhone, inside it's case, and my Apple Watch. Most of the ones I found online required the use of the Apple Watch and Lightning charging cords and was merely a holder. This one has both built in! Below are my pro's and con's:
Pro's:
* Base is weighted and very sturdy feeling
* iPhone lightning connector is adjustable to work with some cases
* Base includes charging puck for Watch
* Charging puck securely holds Apple Watch
* Uses a single charging cord, freeing up Watch and iPhone cables
Con's
* The lightning connector can be pushed down by the case if you're not careful - my first attempt resulted in my phone constantly buzzing as it disconnected and reconnected.
* Power brick is big, as you might expect, just make sure you have room for a rectangular, portrait oriented power brick.
If there's anything I encounter that changes my review, I will update accordingly. For now thought, this is the best bet for anyone looking for an iPhone and Apple Watch combo charging stand.

Beast of a Router
on June 10, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
First things first, this is a beast of a router in more ways than one. It's not only physically big but it's also a monster when it comes to providing strong wifi coverage.
The Setup
--------------
Setting up the router provided a bit of a challenge because it was replacing an Apple AirPort Extreme that had a much smaller footprint. I actually had to pull my 65" TV more forward on it's stand to make room for this router.
From there, I had to use Linksys' website for setup which wasn't too terribly painful. If you're replacing a router and don't want to have to re-enter SSID's and passwords, you will have the option to name it what you want and set the WPA password what you want. This saved me a ton of time in getting everything connected.
The only real hiccup I ran into was that previously, my AirPort wasn't providing DHCP leases assignments, my U-Verse gateway was. So when I attempted to turn of DHCP leasing from the router - I lost all connectivity and had to reboot the router. Just a warning in case anyone else is using something before the router to handle DHCP leases. When I reactive DHCP leasing on the router - everything worked like a charm.
I've been using this router for over a week and I can already tell that the coverage in my house is more rock solid than ever. No more hiccups in loading pages or streaming videos from Hulu, Netflix or iTunes.
Word of caution - the router is billed as perfect for 4K streaming and I bet it is - just make sure you're ISP plan can support 4K as well. I currently have the 12Mbps internet plan and that's not strong enough for 4K streaming - but it's perfect for 1080p.
Pros
-------
1) Did I say this thing was a beast? It's a beast
2) Rock-solid wifi coverage (2-5GHz channels and 1-2.4GHz channel)
3) Works great with Linksys WiFi Range extender - seamless roaming like my old AirPort Extreme / Express setup
4) No stuttering on streaming video from the web
Cons
-------
1) Setup isn't as silky smooth as my AirPort Extreme / Express setup
2) Smart Wifi App tends to kill the communication with the router (Don't try to look at router settings when streaming video, it'll hiccup)
3)Cost/Size might be more than what most people need for basic or light web video streaming
Overall - I think this is a great router so far. It's about $200 more expensive than my AirPort Extreme but the reliability has been amazing. If you have a large house, need a wide wifi coverage net or plan on streaming anything in 4K - this is the router for you!

Prevent dead zones around your home with the help of this Linksys Wi-Fi range extender. It works with all types of Wi-Fi routers, and it uses multi-user MIMO for speed and efficiency. This Linksys Wi-Fi range extender can be used to create a different access point or to extend the field of the router’s connection.

Awesome Extender
on May 28, 2016
Posted by: cjviscito
My current network and computer setup is entirely Apple. I have a newer AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express running my home network. I was a bit skeptical of adding a non-Apple product not because I'm a snob, but because it would something different in the mix.
I'm glad I made the addition! One downside of the Extreme is that Apple doesn't support WPS setup for anything other than printers. Once I started the setup, I placed the extended near the front of my house where my desktop is. The Linksys website setup confirmed that the distance was perfect - not too far away for degradation and not too close to limit the range of extension.
I replaced a powerline Ethernet kit with this extended and I've had a rock solid connection. I even used the Ethernet port on the extended so my Mac mini is connected to a 5Ghz AC network over wifi as well as Ethernet port. Streaming to my Apple TV has been a breeze!
I really wish that I had the new Linksys tri-band router to try out since it would support seamless wifi use, like my Extreme and Express... But with much faster speeds.

Use the Google Smart Light Starter Kit to control the lights using just your voice. Set up in a snap: just plug in Google Home Mini, screw in the GE C-Life smart light bulb, and download the Google Home app to get started. Then just say "Hey Google" to dim, brighten, turn on and turn off the lights."

Is the bulb soft/warm white or bright/daylight white?

The bulb has 3 settings: daylight white which is a cooler white, medium which is a typical soft light, and evening which is a much warmer, yellowish color.
