Warning, Does Not Fit Galaxy S7!
on February 26, 2017

Samsung threw a curve with the standard Galaxy S7. Like the S6 the S7 looks flat, but unlike the S6 the S7 screen has is a slight curve down on the edges. Zagg has established a great reputation for producing some of the best screen protectors out there. This is why I purchased the Zagg Invisible Shield Glass, which says on the box it is for the Galaxy S7 (not Edge), but it will not fit properly. Because of the slight curve of the S7 screen at the edges, the Glass screen protector cannot adhere to the edge leaving a halo effect about one eighth of an inch around the edges. From my research, I found this issue has been documented on the web since last spring. Zagg no longer offers this screen protector for the S7 on their website, yet they never recalled the millions of units still out there, nor have they informed the retailers this item will not fit the S7 according to my Best Buy Associate. Zagg now offers the Glass Curve for the S7, which Best Buy does not offer at this time. However, the screen protector only comes in BLACK. The screen portion is clear with black opaque top and bottom that will cover the color portion of the phone. Now if you have a standard black phone, not a major issue. If you have a colored phone, the color of the phone is covered and you now have a black phone. Also, many have complained that the new Glass Curve makes the touch screen less sensitive requiring multiple swipes and harder pressure. Others have complained the edge of the Glass Curve shield will eventually lift from the screen.
There are pros and cons to using a screen protector with today's Gorilla Glass 4. As far as film type protectors, I don't think they are necessary for today's screens, as they reduce the quality of the screen touch and view, and offer no real protection for screen breakage. As for the Glass type protectors, I do believe they offer protection for screen breakage while keeping the touch and view qualities of the screen..
In fairness to BB and Zagg, BB offered to return/refund and Zagg offered to replace with the new Curve Glass when available. I bought my Zagg as part of an accessory bundle and if refunded, I lose my discount on the other items in the bundle. I do not want a BLACK screen protector and it is unknown if Zagg will produce a clear version of the Glass Curve. The Invisible Shield Glass I have now functions, feels right to the touch, does not diminish the sensitivity of the screen, and the halo on the edge is only noticeable when the screen has a dark image or is off. I would only recommend this screen protector for the S7 if you can get it at an extreme discount as it will still protect. I highly recommend the Invisible Shield Glass for any device it actually fits.

Great Value for the features

The number of reviews says it all. This player gives the most for the price. As with all AV equipment now, there are very little that will support older legacy components. This unit only has HDMI and Digital Audio out, as well as Ethernet and WiFi. Also, I have found that any AV components with WiFi tends to have weak reception, and unless your router is close by, expect network connection and speed throughput / buffering issues. This was resolved for me with a WiFi range extender.
Performance of this unit is excellent! This player was a gift and it replaces my 2 yr. old non-WiFi Panasonic, which I thought was good. The Panasonic had some lag time in reading the disc, but once playing was OK. When I hooked up the Samsung, what a difference. No lag time in startup, and the quality of the picture is far superior compared to my older unit. The picture appears sharper and color fidelity more rich, even with standard DVD's. I am quite impressed for this performance in an sub $70 unit.
As far as the apps, this unit has some of the popular ones, but not as many as the more expensive models. So, do your research and make sure this unit has what you require. Some have complained about no HBO Go app. Currently, there are no DVD players I know of that have the HBO Go app. So, if this app is your goal, you'll have to find another device.
This player does lack a display window and is designed to use the remote for easy control. It's basically a small "black box" about 6 inches less than the width of the older players. It appears all manufactures are going to this minimalist style, more for cost cutting I assume. Another cost cutting feature is the shorter non-removable power cord. This cord needs to be at least 6 inches to a foot longer. Luckily I could move my surge protector closer and the cord just did reach.
Bottom line: This player gives great performance for the price. You can't go wrong. If you want 3D, 4K, or more apps, then chose a more expensive model with those features.

Due to space limitations, I have held off in upgrading my current older LCD/Tiff monitor. However the new thinner ISP monitors will now allow me to upgrade from 19" 4:3 to a 23" 16:9. The current sales at Best Buy make now the time to buy. I went to compare Dell, Acer, HP, and AOC that all have width specification I require. Like a TV, I want to compare image quality between the brands. Best Buy had quite a few monitors running with the same picture and the AOC stood out with the best picture. Whether the others were running at the default settings or not, I don't know, but the AOC had more accurate color, brightness, and contrast. Also, My office is bright and the matte screen is a plus.
Assembly out of the box is simple, screw the base to the mount, and slide the monitor stem into the base until it clicks. The base and mount are not the most sturdy, but adequate. If this monitor is placed on a sturdy flat level surface, there will be no problems.
Hookup is simple, especially since AOC supplies 2 video cables, VGA to VGA and HDMI to DVI. This monitor does not have HDMI input. Windows 8 will automatically install the latest driver and the default settings are adequate for most applications. The menu and control buttons are on the back at the right side. They are straight forward and offer many adjustments for those who require calibration. For most users the default, or one of the preset picture modes, will be sufficient. This monitor has built in ECO power settings, but I just use Windows power settings to control monitor activity. Using the monitor with another device is when you would need this ECO feature. AOC supplies a CD with User Guide, Drivers, and Tools. I have not used the CD other than to browse the User Guide, which is limited and to me of no value. Bottom line: The monitor works well right out of the box, truly PnP.
Those complaining about the "thin bezel" not being as thin as pictured on the box, the bezel is only 3/8 in wide and the actual picture area is exactly 23" diagonally. Advertisers always photograph at angles to best accentuate their product. The angle of the image on the box does make the bezel appear a little thinner than it actually is at the scale they are showing. Those complaining about no VESA mounting, AOC makes the same monitor with VESA mounting just a different model number with other extra features, at an increase cost I'm sure. With this in mind, all inputs are on the back and not the bottom, which will require a few inches offset from a wall for the cables. Those who mentioned dead/stuck pixels, this is a possibility with any LED/LCD display and not the norm. My unit does not have this issue.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this monitor. It looks sleek, modern, and performs very well. For the cost and what you get, this is a Great Value.

I recently purchased a Sharp LC70TQ15U HDTV and wanted to maximize its high quality screen potential. Between my Disney “WOW” calibration disc and the posted calibration for the “SQ” on Amazon, I was able to get the picture looking better than out of the box. As with any setup, ambient lighting is the key. Everyone’s settings for the same unit will be different because of the lighting environment and unit differences. The SQ settings on Amazon were not right for me either and required adjusting. I have read a lot of post about whether or not to invest in a professional ISF calibration. Then I read the reviews of the Geek Squad calibrations and they seem to indicate a “hit or miss” as to the quality of the end results. I went back to my local Best Buy and my salesman assisted me with my decision. He informed me the person that does their calibrations is ISF certified and very good. He introduced me to him and after speaking with him, I felt confident he was qualified and he will do a good job.
My scheduled appointment was a week later, which was good, as I need to have at least 100 hours on the TV for it to break-in before calibration. Geek Squad gives a 4 hour window for the scheduled day. The tech called before he arrived to let me know he was on his way and he showed up at the time he said. He brought all his equipment into the house, being careful of my carpet, furniture, and TV. He is polite, courteous, and very knowledgeable explaining what he is doing as he went along. It took just short of two hours for him to complete the job. He then had me play a DVD and OMG! I was amazed at the improvement. Here I thought I had dialed in a decent looking picture on my own. After his calibration this picture was even more amazing. He told me I had a good picture, but there is no way anyone can get it right without the proper equipment and training. My now good looking TV looks even more amazing. I also asked if he made any adjustments in the service menu (not user accessible) and he said no. He told me newer TV’s have most of the color adjustments that were “service menu” only now in the main menu. So everything he did can be reset back to “out of the box” by clicking “Reset”. With this in mind, if you have kids or family members who may change these settings, be it accident or otherwise, please record/document all the settings so you can correct them should they be changed/reset.
I am more than pleased with Geek Squads TV calibration. To me it was well worth the cost and cheaper than an ISF independent professional. My Geek Squad tech is as every bit the same professional with the same ISF training, certification, and equipment. He takes pride in his work and is exceptionally good at it. Remember, your TV is calibrated for a specific room light level. You cannot expect a dark room calibration (like mine) to look good in a sun lit or bright room and vise versa. However, to remedy this, you can do what I did. I set my “User” AV mode with the same calibrated “Movie” AV mode settings and then adjusted just the Backlight, Contrast, and Brightness for my daytime bright room. I just change the AV mode from “Movie” to “User” as required. I prefer weekend football in a daylight environment; I spill less that way.
If you are happy with the way you have your TV set up, do not spend the money on a calibration. If like me, you have invested $$$$ and you know your TV can give more and you want more, do the calibration. Just do a little research before you pull the trigger and understand what you will get and who will do it.

Best TV I have owned

Internet Connectable?Yes
Connected to the Internet:Yes
My two main criteria for a TV are size and picture quality within a $3K budget. Six months ago I had decided on the Samsung UN75F6300, but hesitated then and decided the 60” 1080i DLP I currently have could hold out a little longer. Then I went to Best Buy a couple of weeks ago to grab a DVD that was on sale. Of course I never go in without checking the current crop of TVs on display. Low and behold they had the Samsung UN75H6350 and it was looking good. But right beside it was the Sharp LC-70TQ15U. Both are new for 2014 and this was the first I heard of the “Q+” series. “4K” sets are still too expensive for me. My theater room is large and I sit about 14 feet from the screen, so I will not really see the total maximum benefit of “4K” one can see up closer, then there is the content availability issue. Enter “Q+”, a hybrid 2K unit at a 1080P price that will play 4K media. My curiosity was peaked. I wanted the real estate of the Samsung, but after seeing the quality of the Q+ I had a dilemma. Both units looked good in the store, and by themselves would look great. The salesman had some 4k trailers in 1080P on a thumb drive to demonstrate the up convert of the Q+ and picture quality of their TV’s. Before he started his demo they had the store ad feed running. Looking at this, I noticed during an ad change the now all black screen of the Samsung had noticeably cloudy areas of lighter blacks (dark grays) peppered across the screen. The Sharp also had this affect (as most LED's do#, but to a very much lesser degree to where if you were not scrutinizing the screen, you may not notice it. Then the next ad had an all white background and I noticed the opposite with the Samsung, it had cloudy dirty areas of light grays. The Sharp displayed solid white with no cloudy areas. As the trailer demo “After Earth” started, I noticed both pictures looked very good. The Sharp had better flesh tones and better details in the shadows. Of course this may just be a calibration issue between the two. The Sharp also had the best color rendition and better separation of color. At 14 feet I’m not sure one could really tell if the enhanced resolution of the Sharp would be that noticeable over the larger Samsung screen, but up close #5ft# you can see it. The Sharp has better clarity and definition overall. For me the Sharp has the better picture. I decided on the Sharp and have not looked back.
It has been 17 days now and I am very pleased with this TV. As with any technology there are good and “I wish this is better” things. The picture is outstanding. As with any new TV it does need some adjustments for your room/lighting environment. I found calibration settings for the SQ from an Amazon review and started there. I found these settings made my TV too green and a little too dark. In the “Advanced” settings I could see in the CMS settings where he had too much green and too little blue. I half these numbers to start and that really improved the colors, but still not quite right. I changed the color temp from low to med-low and that brightened up the screen a little and further resolved the green/blue issue. I have a Disney “WOW” calibration disc and that showed the Amazon published specs for the base settings to be right on + or – one point. Unfortunately, this disc will not help you with the advance settings.
Now for some of the disappointments: This TV, as well as all current true “4K’s” at Best Buy, will not play downloaded “4K” MP4 content via the USB port. This port will only play 1080P or less. I found this has to do with the USB port and not the TV’s capability. The only way to currently view 4K content is via HDMI, so you will need a 4K player or a computer with a 4K card. I think even 4K on the YouTube app is not true 4K, but still looks amazing which brings me to my next issue; wireless network connectivity. My TV is in a 2nd floor bonus room over the garage about 30-40 feet from my router. I get 4 bar signal strength on my laptop in front of my TV and the TV only has one bar or no bars, but yet is connected with very poor app performance. I have a 100ft Ethernet cable I rolled out and the apps just blasted off. I did tests and found with wireless I was only getting 400Kbs down #remember dial-up?) in a 15Mbs network. With Ethernet I was getting 15Mbs. I purchased a Netgear 4 port Range Extender; Problem Solved.
Overall, I am very pleased with this TV. The TQ aluminum trim and base design works very well with my setup, which I prefer over the SQ all black, but would have preferred the SQ price. My unit does not have any of the issues few others have reported with dead pixels and flashing. It was perfect for its specifications right out of the box. No damage or issues. It has an evenly lit screen with very little clouding. In fact, the black bands on top and bottom of wide movies are very even across the screen in a dark room with no clouding. As for motion blur, I find the 120 high setting works the best and still maintains the up covert. If you watch sports and see motion blur, you will have to disable the resolution enhance and set the refresh to 240Hz. I do not game, so no observations here. I also have not tried the 3D since this model does not come with glasses and I do not have a 3D player. FYI, 3D mode disables the up-convert.
Bottom line: Buying this TV from Best Buy has been the best experience I have ever had from them or any other TV purchase. The salesman knows his stuff and bent over backwards to assist me without being pushy or aggressive. The free delivery and installation was professional and caring. Best Buy has really improved since my last TV negotiations a few years ago, where I bought elsewhere. For me the Sharp LC-70TQ15U is an excellent semi UHDTV.

It works for my situation

I use it in...:Large home
I need to get a better connection to my new smart HDTV. I have heard extenders are poor and will cut your service speed in half and also negatively affect the entire network speed. Since I can return this for full price if it doesn't work (great policy Best Buy) why not try it. My wireless router is on main floor about 30-40 feet away, through 2 brick walls or two roof lines, depending on how the signal gets to the 2nd floor media room. My laptop works fine in my media room depending where one sits. However the wireless adapter the TV uses is evidently weaker and barely connects to the network. I have a 15Mbs cable service and the TV was only pulling 0.5Mbs. Remember dial-up? Depending on where I located the extender in this room I either got good reception or poor reception from the router. I started as suggested in the installation guide which put the extender in the same room with clear line of site to the TV, but about 20tf from the TV, closer to the router. TV signal strength improved from no bars to 2 bars out of 5. This TV's wireless adapter is really weak as it should have had full strength. I then moved the router closer to the TV ending up on top of my entertainment cabinet adjacent to the TV and near the outer wall on the router side. The extender is getting a good signal there and the TV has 5 bars. The TV now pulls 13Mbs down. Since the extender is so close to the TV now and all my other devices, I decided to try the Ethernet connection to the TV. Better, the TV has 15Mbs down now. Problem solved!
Now for the pain of set up. Netgear tries to make the setup simple (Netgear Genie) for everyone's skill level and in the process makes it harder for those that prefer the manual setup; really hard for those that may not have much skill if things don't work. On initial setup, one cannot just enter the setup by IP address without going through the genie menu first. My WIFI SSID is hidden and before I always connect new devices I unhide it to make it more simple for first initial connection. First, the WPS function did not work with my Linksys router's WPS. Second, the extender will not connect to a hidden SSID, even though all required data via the "Genie" was correctly entered for the existing wireless network. Other devices can have this issue too, but all my other devices once connected and the SSID hidden again will reconnect if powered off and back on. The Netgear extender will not reconnect, period. If the connection is lost then the network's SSID has to be visible for the extender to reconnect. These issues are all annoyances, but do not affect the performance which I am pleased with. Only 4 stars because of the poor instructions, can't bypass the genie, and no way to connect to a hidden network. The other alternative would have been the Netgear Powerline XWNB5201. This would have been required if the extender could not get a good wireless signal from my router. The extender is the cheaper solution at almost halt the cost.
I have had this extender in service for several days now, never lost a connection and continues to provide my networks max speed. YouTube, Netflix, and the web work great.

Installation, Mounting and Calibration

I want to buy a TV, and have it installed, mounted and calibrated. Is that all included in one price or do I have to pay for each separately?
You will have to negotiate this at the time of purchase. Best Buy usually includes standard delivery and setup, but calibration is separate. Try and negotiate it all at the time of purchase. The last I checked Best Buy separate prices for delivery and set up is $70 and Calibration is $250

Good Luck

If I get my TV calibrated, will I have to re-calibrate it if I move?

Geek Squad told me when I had mine calibrated, that technically any TV should be calibrated once a year. In practice my tech advise in 5 years. Calibration is based on ambient room light. If the room lighting where you move is similar to the calibrated room light, then I say no, as long as the TV was properly and carefully handled during the move. The simple answer is, if you do not like your picture in the new place, you will need it recalibrated.

Best of luck.
