Ideal UPS Backup Solution-DVR, Modem and Router
on October 6, 2016

I was looking for a reasonably lightweight UPS that would back up my DVR, Cable Modem and Wi-Fi Router in the event of a power failure. I was replacing a Tripp Lite UPS that had failed. I wanted a lighter UPS than the Tripp Lite as it sits in my TV cabinet and I keep adding equipment. Most UPSs weigh more than 25 pounds and this one weighs only 10--perfect. It has several 6 outlets for backup and surge protection and another 3 outlets for surge only. I am only backing up the 3 items noted, the rest, including my TV are plugged into the surge only outlets. The manual states that this UPS would backup a modem and router for about 6 hours, which is great. Having the DVR attached will reduce this time, although I don't know how much. If home when the power failure occurs, I will disconnect my DVR if I know nothing is being recorded--that gives me 6 hours of Wi-Fi to help me from "suffering" through the power failure. I also wanted a new model and this model fitted the bill perfectly-- first made available to consumers in September 2016! This unit has a 3 year warranty and products made by APC are outstanding! I have bought and used several APC products in my lifetime! I identified the specific product I wanted on line and once I decided the UPS I wanted, I checked the Best Buy website, noted it was in stock at my closest Best Buy store (Bloomingdale, IL), then went to the store and bought it--a ten minute process!

Great Modem!

I have used an Arris SB 6121 cable modem for 5 years and it served me well. Recently, Comcast dropped support for that modem so I decided to upgrade and buy this one. Yes, my SB 6121 still works, but if you have a problem with your service and call 1-800-Comcast, they will blame the modem (they know which modem you have) irrespective of what the real issue is. Why risk arguing with Comcast--rarely do you ever win! Five years is an acceptable life span for a device like a modem, so I bought the SB 6190 at Best Buy in Lombard, IL, and used the Amazon pricing for a price match. The process at the store for price matching and checking out was outstanding. I was in and out of the store in 10 minutes.
When testing my internet connection on DSLreports, my SB 6121 modem got terrible bufferbloat ratings, C- or a D, whereas the SB 6190 typically gets an "A" rating. The speed achieved and quality ratings are about the same -- (download 70 Mbps, upload 10 Mbps) which is the agreed upon speed I have with Comcast and both modems get an A for quality. It appears the latency issue on the SB 6190 is much better, hence the bufferbloat improved rating.
Some reviewers complain that the SB 6190 runs hot--my experience is that it runs a bit warm, but no warmer than my SB 6121.
The SB 6190 has a maximum speed rating of 1.4 Gbps so if I decide to upgrade my Comcast service from my current 70 Mbps, it should work.
Some people like to have their modem include a WiFi router. I believe that is a bad idea and here is why. The technologies are not the same, have evolved differently over the years and will continue to change separately in the future. For example, the latest WiFi standard is 802.11ac, however, a newer technology is due within the next year, specifically 802.11ax. Continuing on the modem side of this thought, my new SB 6190 modem has DOC 3.0 capability but a newer and improved technology, DOC 3.1 is coming shortly. I am hopeful a firmware update on my SB 6190 will be possible but who knows? In short, keep your modem purchase separate from your router! You will be doing yourself a BIG favor.

Works great!

I had zero problems installing the kit. At the remote end, I hooked the device to an un-managed gigabit switch and all the devices plugged into the switch can get to the internet without difficulty. I can now stream video!
My only regret is that no one seems to sell a single add on unit even though the TP-Link web site indicates there is one. Everyone is just selling the two unit kit.

Availability of single unit

The reviewer is correct. Being able to purchase a single unit would be nice but I am unaware of anybody selling them. Very unfortunate.

Didn't have a phone jack?

Most modems do not include telephony support. Why would you buy a modem without verifying it could do what you wanted to do--in your case, handle a telephone over your cable service?

Great idea but to many bugs
By Kibo
I also return my surface book and will look to see what happens with the next release. It!s hard to express how fed up I am with microsoft. They sold us what they called a premium product and they asked a premium price for it and I was OK with that but that is not what I received. Both my HP desktop and my Dell laptop have preformed without any problems out of the box for years. I an no Apple fan boy but microsoft needs to take a hard look at what they are dolng and then look at what Apple has been doing for there customer base.

Review isn't credible with glaring grammar error
May 27, 2017
Your review isn't at all credible when you have a glaring grammar error in the headline of your review. As used, the correct "to" should be "too" or at least that is what I learned in third grade!
