Excellent wireless mouse that checks all the boxes
on January 30, 2018

from Sacramento, CA, USA
Logitech has been one of my go-to brands when it comes to computing accessories and they've always seemed to offer a variety of different mice to cater to different needs. Personally, I had switched back to wired mice almost 100% due to inconsistent performance and sometimes unpredictable battery life or connectivity issues with wireless mice in general (regardless of brand). So, I had high expectations when it came to using what Logitech refers to as a gaming mouse with "Lightspeed" wireless technology.
First off, from a build quality perspective the G603 has the typically Logitech build quality, which is good. Like some of their other wireless mice, it can run on either one or two batteries, which gives you some options to adjusting the overall weight, without resorting to actual weights.
As a gaming mouse, you would expect certain features such as adjustable DPI and multiple programmable buttons. The G603 checks the boxes on both, without going overboard as it has 6 programmable buttons. There is also a combination switch on the bottom that toggles between OFF, LO and HI speed USB reporting rates, which requires use of the included USB Lightspeed dongle. If you connect using Bluetooth, you're basically always in LO.
Going back to the buttons, the 6 buttons are the typical left and right buttons, the mouse wheel as a button, a button below the wheel, plus two buttons on the left side commonly used for Back and Forward. As is the usual case, you'll need to install the Logitech Gaming Software for maximum customization options. LGS sometimes also includes firmware updates although I did not run into one with the version I installed (8.96.88)
As for DPI, you can customize between the range of 200-12000 dpi. Even for non-gaming use, this can be very valuable when having to deal with multiple mousing surfaces when on the go.
The only connectivity issues I had with the G603 seemed to be Bluetooth-driver specific, so probably no fault of the mouse itself. As a wireless mouse, it performed as well for me as a wired mouse and battery life has been a non-issue, which is refreshing.

Great indoor/outdoor fully wireless camera system
on November 18, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The NETGEAR Arlo Pro 2 is available in multiple configurations. The VMS4230P configuration is basically the Arlo Base Station (VMB4000) plus two of the Arlo Pro 2 cameras.
This is not my first experience with the Arlo product line, as I have the Arlo Q camera. So, I'm familiar with (and already use) the free cloud video recording, as well as the upgraded service plans that are available.
Because I am already an Arlo user, the Arlo Pro 2 was even easier to set up than it already would be. I basically fired up the Arlo app, then followed the simple instructions to add the Arlo Base station and Arlo Pro 2 cameras to my account.
Once added, I noticed that the Arlo Pro 2 cameras feel nicely constructed and had better video quality compared to my Arlo Q, all while running off of battery. The Arlo Pro 2 cameras are designed for indoor or outdoor use though, and include outdoor mounts that magnetically attach which allows you to orient them with infinite adjustability around a 180 degree axis.
Similar to the Arlo Q, I was able to set up motion-activated recordings that could be viewed remotely, and the motion sensitivity seemed to be accurate in my experience.
While the cameras can be used outdoors or indoors, the Base Station is designed to be indoors. It connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and also includes USB ports for connecting a USB storage device for recordings (in addition to the cloud).
The Base Station also includes a siren that can sound at up to 100 dB; since I already have an alarm system, I don't really have a use for that, but it is nice to know I can remotely trigger it on if the need ever arises.
Overall, I found the Arlo Pro 2 system (VMS4230P) a nice addition to my home automation with lots of flexibility when it comes to camera placement and usage. The free plan works good for me, so other than the initial investment there is no additional cost. I've had the system in place for about two weeks now, and the camera batteries are still at 98% each, which is great.

Pour wine without removing the cork by using the Coravin Model Two wine system. The durable needle pierces the cork so you can pour, and then the cork reseals when the needle is removed to preserve the remaining wine. This Coravin Model Two wine system comes with two capsules that let you pour up to 30 glasses of wine.

System actually works, and changes drinking habits
on October 29, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Coravin Model Two Wine System purports to give wine lovers the freedom to pour any wine, in any amount, without removing the cork. It is able to do this by using a thin needle to puncture the cork and draw wine, that when removed allows the cork to naturally reseal itself. It also leverages argon gas to reduce the chances of oxygen entering the bottle during use, which would lead to oxidation.
I've been using the Model Two for close to a month now, and it does seem to work as expected. In the past, I would use different wine stoppers when a whole bottle is not consumed, and while it did help, there was a change in taste days or a week after opening. With the Model Two, I have been moving between 5 bottles and the taste seems the same in the month since starting.
The Model Two is relatively easy to use, especially since you no longer need to use a corkscrew to remove the cork. Supposedly it isn't expected to work well with synthetic corks, but a few of the bottles I've used it on have synthetic corks and seem to be fine.
I believe each argon gas capsules is supposed to be good for 15 glasses each, but I'm still on my first capsule. I don't drink a full glass of wine each time, so that could be the reason. Replacement capsules are a little under $20 for a pair, which doesn't seem too bad.
Overall, the Coravin Model Two delivers on its promises, and really has changed the way we enjoy our wine collection.

Great sound w/noise cancellation and latest codecs
on October 29, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
Even though "true wireless" headphones are in the spotlight, companies are still releasing traditional wireless headphones that are connected by a wire. While not as glamarous, they typically have longer battery life and provide a more stable connection, probably due to larger antennas.
The Sony WI-1000X Wireless Noise Cancelling Stereo Headset is of that design, and brings what appears to be the latest and greatest to the table. First off, from a design-perspective the cushioned neck band is noticeably more comfortable than most. Two complete sets of earbud tips are included so you should be able to find the right fit. Raised buttons on the inner sides of the lower band are easy to find by touch
As Bluetooth headphones, they connect to any Bluetooth device similar to most. Sony does have a mobile app "Sony Headphones Connect" which makes the pairing process slightly easier, but its main advantage is being able to adjust various sound settings. It also pairs with multiple devices so you can switch between devices without having to re-pair each time, with it reconnecting to the most recent device upon power on.
On the iPhone, AAC is usually the codec used, which as usual sounds pretty good but latency with AAC is a little high which you notice watching videos.
On supported devices, such as my Google Pixel XL with Android 8.0.0, all of the latest codecs are available including aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC. I can typically hear the audible difference between AAC and aptX, but this is my first experience with aptX HD and LDAC. In use, all of these codecs do make a difference over AAC (and especially SBC), and also help with keeping the audio in sync with video, due to the lower latency, essentially matching wired performance. LDAC seems to be the preferred codec.
Besides the previously mentioned earbud tip assortment, a microUSB charging cable and carrying bag are included, but no charger. Also interestingly, there is a microUSB to 3.5mm cable which basically turns this into a wired noise canceling headset, which is the other way to avoid the Bluetooth latency issue on an iPhone.
The most important aspect of this headset is the noise cancelling feature. By leveraging a microphone to monitor outside sounds, the noise cancelling uses the reverse waveforms to essentially remove the outside sounds. Noise cancelling works especially well in environments like an airplane especially in conjunction with a proper fit of earbud tips.
On phone calls, call audio goes through both earbuds which is nice, as some sets only send phone audio to one.
Overall, I really enjoy the sound signature of this headset and the noise cancelling works as expected. The battery life so far has been very impressive, as well as the connection stability.

Great Projector for Work... and Home
on October 15, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Epson Pro EX9210 projector is from Epson's line of Portable Projectors for Work. This means it is designed for easy set up and portability. The EX line does not compromise on capabilities however. The Pro EX9210 uses a 3LCD design (as opposed to DLP) with a native resolution of 1920x1200, aka WUXGA. It also advertises a brightness of 3400 lumens, which makes a noticeable difference in lit conference/meeting rooms.
It has two HDMI inputs (one is MHL-enabled), plus VGA and even composite inputs.
It has a single USB A port which can accept USB storage devices, or the included Wi-Fi adapter. The included adapter supports 2.4GHz only, and you can either use it to connect to the projector directly, or to have it connect to an existing wireless network. The Epson mobile app, iProjection, is used to do the former and seems to work well for showing photos from your device, for example.
At work where I typically use projectors with a 1024x768 native resolution, there obviously is a noticeable difference compared to the EX9210. But it even seems to do the basics better, with better automatic keystone correction, for example, and a quicker cool down when it's time to pack it up and go.
Even though this is from the "Work" line, as opposed to "For Home," I found it worked just as well for watching movies. Whether using a laptop or a streaming stick, the video quality is top notch. The EX9210 actually has a built-in speaker as well, although it is probably designed more for presentations and webcasts, rather than movies.
A wireless remote control and a carrying case round out the included accessories.
Using this projector at work is noticeably better than the other projectors, and I'm doing my best to keep others from swiping it for their presentations. At the same time, it seems to work very well at home for movies, even though it isn't designed for that workload.
Overall, I recommend this projector as it definitely makes an impression.

Exactly what I'd expect from a Bose product
on October 15, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
The Bose SoundSport Free wireless headphones are Bose's first foray into the true wireless headphone market. They are also my first true wireless set; I have plenty of Bluetooth/wireless speakers and headphones, but none of the true wireless type.
Being a Bose product, I expected a certain type of sound quality and reliable performance.
As far as sound quality goes, it was exactly what I expected. The "Bose sound" is definitely not "flat" or "reference quality." It tends to add more punch to the audio, not unlike that Loudness button that you always wanted to use but were a little embarrassed to admit you enjoyed.
Most people are interested in hearing how hard it is to connect, and stay connected, to true wireless headphones, since they tend to have smaller antennas and/or are more susceptible to interference.
For iOS and Android, there is a Bose Connect app which makes pairing easy, as well as provides a mechanism for updates.
The SoundSport Free can actually pair to multiple devices, although of course you can only use it with one at a time. The documentation says it can be paired with up to seven devices; so far I have them paired to four and it is easy to connect to a different device with a push of a button.
Speaking of buttons; the left earpiece has a single button which tells you what device it is connected to, and can be used to switch to another device. The right earpiece has three buttons for play/pause/skip, plus separate volume buttons.
In practice, all worked well. The bluetooth connection worked surprisingly well. I actually appreciate the ability to use a single earbud, for spatial awareness.
A couple things to note. You can use these for phone calls, but phone audio only comes out of the right earbud.
Also, Bose does not publish specifications, but from my Google Pixel XL it appears that the SoundSport Free only supports the SBC and AAC codecs. AAC does sound better than SBC, but still suffers from noticeable latency when trying to watch a video, for example. I really wish aptX or LDAC was supported; it's unclear whether that is available via a firmware update or not.
The overall design is a bit on the larger side of things, although it doesn't really bother me. Multiple StayHear+ Sport tips are included, and they really do a great job of keeping the earbuds in place and ensuring a good seal for best sound quality.
Finally, the included storage/charging case keeps the earbuds safely stored and charged at the ready. When you power them on, the battery level is reported. When connected to iOS, it also reports the battery level. Google is supposedly adding this to Android soon, but in the meantime you can also see the battery level in the Bose Connect app.
Overall, I am very pleased with the overall sound and performance of the SoundSport Free. Connections seem rock solid, and the sound quality is what I expected. I appreciate being able to use just the right earbud to maintain spatial awareness. The battery life has been good as well, and the charging storage case makes it easy to avoid losing them or finding them out of juice.

Great performing vacuum proves cordless works
on October 15, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
Having used corded vacuums all my life, there were three main concerns when it came to a cordless vacuum: power/effectiveness, runtime, and weight. All of these are directly related to the fact that you are working off of a battery, as opposed to constant electrical power.
The Shark IONFlex 2X DuoClean IF251 Cord-Free Ultra-Light aims to address all three of these concerns head on.
First, it advertises more suction power than what I assume is their primary competitor in this space. The DuoClean part of the name refers to its ability to pick up both fine dust and large debris on carpets and floors.
Second, it again advertises a longer runtime against the same competitor, and achieves it by including a second battery and a separate charging dock. This is a smart design choice in my opinion because it gives you the longer (combined) runtime, if needed, but reducing the amount of battery weight that needs to be moved at one time.
Which touches on the third concern of weight. The design of the IONFlex seems to balance the overall weight so you don't notice it as much. And again, by providing two batteries you don't have the penalty of moving around twice as much battery when you need the longer runtime.
In practice, I found that the IONFlex works as well as advertised and successfully addressed the concerns I had.
The vacuum seems powerful enough to get the job done; in fact, it practically pulls itself along with you simply steering it or slowing it down to concentrate on specific areas.
Little touches like multiple LEDs make for easy vacuuming within dimly lit (or unlit) areas.
It maneuvers very easily and can get underneath most low pieces of furniture without any issues.
Similar to our corded Shark Navigator, you'll want to empty the dust cup container often for best results.
I also like the ability to use the IONFlex as a handvac for the cars.
Overall, the freedom provided by the cordless IONFlex is refreshing. It's nice to be able to just pick it up and go, and not have to worry about holding a power cord and relocating it multiple times. The separate outboard charger means I always have a battery charged up and ready to go, although each battery seems to last longer than I expected.
A 5-year warranty (2-years for the battery) is great piece of mind, as well.
For anyone wondering, the main difference between the IF251 (this model) and the IF252 is an additional cleaning accessory.

Highly recommended ergo mouse alternative
on September 29, 2017
Posted by: RonM
from Sacramento, CA, USA
Logitech has been one of my go-to brands when it comes to computing accessories, but to be honest it has been at least a decade since I've tried to use a trackball. So, I was definitely curious how the Logitech MX Ergo Plus Wireless Trackball performed.
First off, from a build quality perspective the MX Ergo Plus meets and even slightly exceeds my typically high expectations from Logitech. Even though you aren't moving the whole unit around like a mouse, it still feels well built. In addition, the adjustable ergonomic angles (more on that later) are provided by a nicely weighted magnetic metal plate in conjunction with other embedded magnetics. All of the other buttons, wheel, and trackball itself also have the expected tactile feel.
Now, the biggest feature touted is the ergonomic design. With the previously mentioned magnetic metal plate, you can have the MX Ergo sit pretty much flat, or by at a 10 degree angle. The Plus model, which is sold exclusively by Best Buy, adds an additional base that results in a 20 degree tilt.
I've been using a split ergonomic keyboard for years, and I really liked using the Ergo Plus in the full 20 degree angle, as it felt like my hand is resting at a natural angle and state. The trackball itself feels precisely controlled by my thumb, and there is a button that alternates between two dpi settings for even more finer control.
Also previously mentioned, a wheel is located between the two buttons for both vertical and horizontal scrolling, as well as middle-click duties.
Logitech also provides their optional software, Logitech Options, that allows you to customize button actions. It is optional in most cases if you're happy with the default settings.
The Wireless component is via both Bluetooth or Logitech's Unifying receiver, which is included in the package. In practice, it worked well for me.
Other items of note. The built-in rechargeable battery is charged via microUSB; cable, but not charger, included. Also, it is capable of being connected to more than one system with a button to toggle between systems. The Logitech Options software also offers a feature to share information between the two systems, but I didn't try it out.
Overall, I am very pleasantly surprised with how quickly I adjusted to the MX Ergo Plus. I'll be using it with my notebook by the couch from now on and definitely recommend it if you want an ergonomic alternative to a mouse.

Powerful and definitely built to last
on September 11, 2017

My wife and I were somewhat familiar with the Vitamix brand but when it came to blending duties, typically thought products like bullet-this and ninja-that were good enough. After using the E310, it's amazing how much of a difference there is.
But let's begin with appearances and first impressions. The E310 has a very straightforward, industrial design with an on/off switch, a speed selector knob, and a pulse switch. All controls are large in size. The base has a very hefty weight to it, which exudes the feeling that it is built like a tank and will not have any issues within the 5-year warranty period. The included 48-ounce container also feels sturdy and has a rubber cap that clamps on. This makes it much easier to attach and remove in a hurry without having to worry about a threaded cap.
When it comes to use, this thing has power. With 10 speeds to choose from, it seems to make fine work out of anything you throw in it. A tamper is also included, but the piece that attaches the tamper to the blender for storage is apparently optional.
Optional does seem to be the key word here. Vitamix offers quite a few optional accessories ranging from blend-and-go type container cups to the previously mentioned tamper holder.
Overall though, you do get everything needed to perform effort-free blending with something that looks and feels like it is built to last. It is also engineered and assembled in the USA, if that is something that appeals to you.

Excellent convertible notebook with a great screen
on July 30, 2017
Posted by: RonM
The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365) is a 13" convertible laptop with Dell's InfinityEdge display. Dell says it is virtually borderless; when it first debuted on the market that might have been true, but as we've seen on smartphones there are devices out there with little to no border/bezel now. Still, a border/bezel of about 5mm is nothing to scoff at, and does result in an overall smaller footprint.
This particular model is outfitted with 16GB RAM, a 512GB SK hynix SSD, and the aforementioned 13.3" InfinityEdge touch display with a resolution of 1920x1080. (There is a model available with a Quad HD+ 3200x1800 resolution.) Even though the Full HD resolution doesn't quite match Apple's Retina resolution on the 13.3" MacBook Pro, I still find things sharp enough. One of the first things you notice after using the display for awhile is it's awkward adjustments to brightness levels. According to Dell, this is by design as part of the Dynamic Brightness Control (DBC), to aid with battery life. They have provided a utility that can be downloaded to disable/enable DBC. While it is a little annoying, I have left DBC enabled because I really enjoy the battery life.
Speaking of battery life, it is refreshing to be able to use the XPS fairly regularly for three days on a charge. This is light use along the lines of browsing the web and using most of the default power settings which aggressively hibernates the notebook after idle. It is aggressive enough that most of the time after opening the notebook, you have to press the power button to wake it from hibernation.
A fingerprint reader is located on the right side and makes it very easy to login to Windows 10, due to the Windows Hello feature. Speaking of Windows 10, it ships with Windows 10 Home, not Professional.
The touch display also supports an active stylus. I didn't purchase the Dell stylus but instead used it with the Wacom Bamboo Ink Smart Stylus, which apparently supports both the Wacom Active Electrostatic (AES) protocol as well as Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP). It seems like only AES works with the Dell. In practice, it works pretty well; maybe even better than the stylus on the original Microsoft Surface Pro. It does feel a little awkward holding it in the tablet mode, but at least the keyboard keys are disabled automatically.
Although only one of the two USB C ports is labeled as a Thunderbolt 3 port, I was able to get video output out of either port, using a third-party passive adapter.
A few little annoyances include difficulty opening the notebook, the fact that it only ships with Windows 10 Home (it really should ship with Professional), the webcam location at the bottom of the screen, and how long it takes to come out of hibernation (approximately 40 seconds).
Still, I really like the display, the fingerprint reader for easy login, the active stylus support, the soft touch carbon fiber palm rest, and the overall battery life.
