Thought these would be "starter" height speakers

Before mounting ceiling speakers and dropping a bundle I decided to give these little speakers a try and I'm glad I did. They sound great and do just what they're supposed to, throw sound up and let it zing around overhead. Don't think I'll be looking for a replacement anytime soon.

Beautiful sound from a small speaker

Nuanced, sensitive, and more powerful than their small size would suggest. These speakers really made me fall in love with music again.

ONKYO TX-RZ800 REVIEW
on November 22, 2015
Posted by: JFSKS
When I finally decided to replace my ten year old Onkyo TX-NR900, I did my due diligence. I started looking at Marantz, then Yamaha, and finally Pioneer. I wanted to avoid brand loyalty and make an “objective” decision. I wasn’t able to preview the RZ800 but could listen to the NR747 (which has the same DAC), the Yamaha 1050, and Pioneer 91 in the same room through the same speakers. After listening to them all I chose Onkyo and I ordered the TX-RZ800. It took just a week to receive it.
My setup is 5.1.2 and it was easy peasy. After I had everything connected, I turned the receiver on and it wanted to update the firmware. That took about 5 minutes then I proceeded with the setup.
AccuEQ took about 30 minutes. I’ve seen lots of gritching about Onkyo no longer using Audyssey and frankly I don’t get it. The system tested the speakers several times. The AccuEQ did a good job judging distances, matched my physical measurements. Not sure about the crossovers, previously I used THX crossovers and may again, but for the time being I am letting it ride, because it sounds great even given my challenging room configuration and acoustics.
I was up and running within the hour.
Audio
I like a simple uncrowded sound stage, so I usually play music in Stereo which is 2.1.
Everything sounds really good. Joni Mitchell “Blue” is stunning. The sound feels more precise and seems to have greater clarity than my previous system (toslink/no hdmi). Anyway to my ear, there is an all around fuller sound. Even the mp3s sound great but most my music is in wav or flac files. Which by the way flac do play to the Onkyo the from the PC via hdmi.
I have BowersWilkins (684 S2) fronts and center, Onkyo Atmos height speakers, Polk Audio bookshelves for surrounds and a Pioneer sub-woofer. This receiver really brings the BowersWilkins to life. I loved their sound before but now I’m in awe.
I push music from JRiver on my PC to the Onkyo and it works great. The Onkyo becomes the Player. I set the TV to duplicate the monitor and usually put JRiver in theater view, it’s easy and prettier than the Onkyo OSD which is very, VERY plain and FYI you don’t even get a basic display via the PC, you do using the NET.
You can also play music from the PC via Ethernet, mine is wired. It took JRiver a minute or two to first “see” the Onkyo but now it’s there and I can select it. It’s just that easy. The problem is using this setup the music is played as mp3, still sounded good but not what I want. You can also pull the music from the PC using the Onkyo controls, the playlists work great.
While working on my configuration I did push some music from Windows Media Player and that works fine too.
I prefer control what’s playing via my PC and JRiver. The JRiver “Gizmo” app also works to select tunes. You just chose the Onkyo in where to play. I’ve used the Android version on both my phone and tablet and it works well. I have not tried the JRiver remote app.
Visual
My video sources are Google Fiber TV, Netflix, Amazon, and the PS3 blu-ray.
The TV is set for 5.1 and works as expected. Streaming Netflix and Amazon also works well and there you are more likely to have surround sound.
I’ve watched two Dolby Atmos movies: Gravity and Mad Max: Fury Road ... impressive. The dog and I were both turning our heads to see where the sound was coming from, very fun. The receiver went into the Atmos mode automatically. I just had to put the disk in the player. Also watched two DTS-HD movies: American Hustle and The Monuments Men for both the surround was pretty subtle but clear and precise.
I haven’t tested DTS:X yet.
The REMOTE is easy and simple I like it, but I use the Harmony One so I’ve been getting that configured. If I were going to use the Onkyo remote I would bemoan that it is not lit, but nothing else is a problem. One thing, if you are using this remote routinely you’ll probably want to turn CEC on, but if you are using a universal remote turn it off.
I’ve used the ONKYO REMOTE APP on both my phone and table and they are different, I prefer the phone version, at least so far. Still learning what the app can do. One caution the app is very quick and responsive, I increased the volume so quickly that the dog ran out of the room. (I’ve since found the volume limiter that you can set on the receiver to avoid blowing your speakers.) The Onkyo remote app also lets me boost the volume to the center channel on the fly and this is appreciated with dialog heavy movies.
Miscellaneous
BLUETOOTH: Paired my phone, simple, easy. Music played to receiver.
My old Onkyo could practically heat the room, but heat has not been a problem with the RZ800. After playing it for hours at a time it barely feels warm. It is in an open cabinet.
Conclusion
So, after watching 6 movies and playing another 20 or so hours of music everything is awesome.

How do hook up the sub?

Just use an RCA cable from Sub Out on Onkyo to the sub-woofer. Two subs are supported.
