A bonfire amidst a dark night ...

Dark Souls III, at this point, needs no introduction - it's challenging, absorbing, punishing and rewarding. If you're reading this then you've probably already played Dark Souls III and are looking for some guidance through its dark and dreary depths. Thankfully this strategy guide is a loyal companion that will give you just that: guidance. Before continuing further, it is worth noting that this book is more like a reference manual, at least in my opinion, than a full on step-by-step walkthrough. Sure, the walkthrough is the largest part of the guide but part of the excitement of Dark Souls III is the exploration and the many mysteries, treasures and surprises you will find therein. As such, the guide does a good job at keeping the aforementioned sensibility alive as best as a, well, strategy guide can.
In addition to having a hearty walkthrough, useful maps and boss strategies, the book also features reference sections for weapons, items, enemies, NPCs and the like - essentially, there isn't a stone that remains unturned. This particular edition is hardcover and has a nice aesthetic appearance that will certainly appeal to those that enjoy these type of "collector's edition" guides.
All-in-all, I am very pleased with Prima's venture into Dark Souls III that I would recommend highly to anyone that feels a need to have such an item.

An Underrated Gem
on March 30, 2016

Resident Evil 6 makes it debut on the Playstation 4 and, while it's not a new title, the game itself is a must-have for any Resident Evil fan. Yes, it's true that critics upon its initial release didn’t receive the game warmly yet it was, nevertheless, a hit amongst fans and, really, who would you rather listen to? Combining elements from both Resident Evil 4 and 5 into a great amalgam of different characters and playing styles, Resident Evil 6 really gives the player a diverse experience that is as rewarding as it is challenging.
For those uninitiated with the title at all, Resident Evil 6 plays similarly to Resident Evil 4 and 5 while, thematically, it ties together a lot of loose ends from the aforementioned games. In other words, you can expect a mixture of horror and action gameplay with a strong emphasis on atmosphere as a whole. A split-screen couch co-op mode is available that is a blast to play with a friend or loved one although the single player mode is just as engaging so, either way, you'll be having a good time. This particular edition of the game has been given the HD treatment and it shows - the graphics are excellent considering they are from a generation ago and the frame-rate increase is flawless.
Overall, Resident Evil 6 is a great conclusion to the series thus far (as we're all waiting with bated breath for Resident Evil 7, no doubt) that will satisfy the expectations of anyone who enjoyed Resident Evil 4 and/or 5. A highly recommended addition to any horror connoisseur’s collection!

A Solid Portable CD Player
on January 31, 2016
Posted by: StygianNocturne
In this day and age, portable CD players aren't as in vogue as they used to be but they, nevertheless, still serve a purpose. I am one of those music listeners that enjoys reading through the lyric sheet and absorbing the artwork of an album when I listen to it for the first time and this Insignia CD player has come in handy for that time and time again. In short, anyone who doesn't have a sound system they can exploit while listening to a CD will find this item to be quite useful.
This portable CD player comes with the standard features one expects from this kind of device - skip protection, volume control, bass boost and the like. It's made of a sturdy plastic, resilient to the wear and tear carrying it in a backpack would potentially cause it otherwise (something I can attest to from personal experience). While there is a bass boost, there aren't any other audio options available which would have been appreciated since I generally like to "tweak" the sound as much as possible. Thankfully, however, the inherent sound of this Insignia device is clear, concise and robust, at least from the experience I have had listening to predominantly "heavy" albums; I expect that the sound will be balanced for most music genres, however. Also, the battery life is pretty good - this device won't be eating your double A batteries left and right or anything, but it is a good idea to keep a few handy anyway.
Simply put, this is the best affordable portable CD player I could find on the market a year or so ago and I've yet to have any issues with it. Had I the option, I probably would have given this CD player a 4.5 just because I would liked to have had more audio options but that's just a personal gripe, really, which is why I rounded up and give it a five. After a year of frequent use, I can say that this is a durable, reliable CD player that is recommended to anyone with a need for one!

A Welcomed, Powerful Return

The Slipknot family experienced a considerable amount of hardship between the releases of All Hope Is Gone and this album, The Gray Chapter, with the death of the band's late bassist Paul Gray (#2) and the exit of renowned drummer Joey Jordison. Since Slipknot is more about being a collective whole as opposed to individual personalities, the loss of a part of a collective is a difficult thing to overcome, if even such a thing is possible, but thankfully Slipknot defied the odds. A long-time in the making, The Gray Chapter finally came to us in 2014 (no less than six years after All Hope Is Gone) and the band is arguably stronger than ever. While different Slipknot fans have different favorites, of course, I think the musical progression and sincerity of the group is undeniable. There's never been a "sell-out" record or an endless stream of releases that sound alike - each Slipknot album stands on its own two feet and has a unique sound within the construct of the band's easily identifiable sound. As such, The Gray Chapter is another chapter (no pun intended) in the band's career that doesn't quite sound like a past album although it's, you know, still quite obviously Slipknot. With that being said, however, seasoned fans will be happy to hear that a few of the tracks here really remind one of the unadulterated aggression featured on the band's first two albums; likewise, fans that appreciate the more "refined" approach of Vol. 3 and All Hope Is Gone will have much to salivate over as well.
It's difficult for me to pick highlights on this album because I like literally every track and have gone through different phases with them. When I first got the record I was naturally hit hard with tracks like Custer and The Negative One as well as the more accessible The Devil In I and Killpop (what a great song title, by the way). With more listens, however, the middle-part of the album really came alive, for instance, and I began noticing musical nuances that I didn't before, such as the melodic solo in Nomadic and the beautiful textures in Goodbye. In short, this is an album that will reward the listener's time and energy with renewed excitement and vigor because there's really a lot happening here musically and emotionally.
If you're familiar with Slipknot and enjoy their work, The Gray Chapter is a "no brainer" purchase. If you're not familiar with the band but are interested in their work, this is a good album to get because it features the various characteristics that make Slipknot who they are as well as adding some new musicals ideas that "old school" fans will certainly pick up on. Either way, The Gray Chapter is an excellent album independent of the catalog its a part of just as it's a quintessential piece of Slipknot's defined yet ever-growing legacy. Highly, highly recommended to anyone with an ear for heavy, sincere music!

The Immortal House Of Hammer!
on January 31, 2016

While there have been a few Hammer film releases on blu-ray within the past couple of years, we haven't been given a nice set until now. Much debate could be had as to which Hammer pictures should or shouldn't have been included here but, seeing as the set is branded with "volume one", it gives us hope that more are on the way. Either way, I am personally thrilled that Dracula Returns From The Grave was included here because it's definitely one of my favorite Hammer titles. Anyway, these four films are excellent introductory pieces to the Hammer canon and aesthetic that could easily get the uninitiated initiated.
Since many readers here will already be familiar with these timeless films, the main concern is probably the quality of the transfers. Myself, I fully admit that I was a bit skeptical because these are older pieces that generally were ignored insofar as special transfers and print clean-ups were concerned but, rest assured, the transfers included in this set are pristine. Even though I had already seen all four of these movies on VHS or DVD before I got this set, the transfer quality here was so spectacular that I felt like I was watching each film for the first time. If you're into buying blu-rays because you want exceptional picture quality, you can't go wrong here! All-in-all, this is a great set for any Hammer fan and I look forward to the next one with high anticipation!

From The Co-Op Perspective ...
on January 20, 2016
Posted by: StygianNocturne
Resident Evil Revelations 2, a sequel to a game originally only released for the Nintendo 3DS, sees the Resident Evil series finding a nice balance between the old and the new. The gameplay mechanics themselves as firmly rooted in the series from Resident Evil 4 onward, although the overall atmosphere found throughout Revelations 2 is firmly rooted in the sentiments of the first couple of games. As such, this game becomes a winner for old and new fans alike.
Since I played through Revelations 2 strictly in the cooperative mode with my wife, I will write about it from that perspective. The set-up is ideal for one person who's more well-versed in gaming than the other because the first player controls the main offensive character while the second player operates the secondary character, meant to enhance the environment for the first. This can be done through the shining of a flashlight or even the pointing of a finger, although the second player isn't only relegated to such activity as they, too, can fight, albeit with less options, and explore the terrain for items. Overall, the game really compliments a dynamic that doesn't require two gaming experts so the speak, which is something my wife and I found particularly enjoyable. Like many "couch co-op" games, the screen is horizontally split so that each player has their own half of it.
Revelations 2 takes place in episodic form, as well, switching between two different pairs of characters each time. Each team has particular strengths and weaknesses that you will get to know as you progress through the game. Both teams can each carry items for one another that can be passed as long as the players are close, with inventory expansion options available if you're one to fully explore the virtual environments you're amidst. With that said, the game generally rewards exploration with useful items so it's highly recommended that you make your way through every possible nook and cranny.
I feel that Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a great experience overall, and is one I look forward to playing through alone at some point, just to compare that with the co-op mode. The isolation the island setting gives off is very effective, the enemies are foreboding and the progression of the storyline definitely keeps you on your toes. Overall, it's a solid horror gaming experience that is worth investing in if you're looking to play a game alongside somebody. Oh, and as a bit of a hint for uninitiated players, just because you can't see something doesn't mean it can't kill you! Good luck.

A Masterpiece, Plain And Simple.
on January 19, 2016
Posted by: StygianNocturne
From Software, the Japanese company responsible for Bloodborne and the renowned Dark Souls series, has a reputation for releasing games that aren't particularly easy, at least compared to the bulk of the competition. As such, going into Bloodborne with the expectations that it's a casual, happy-go-lucky sort of game is the wrong stance to take because it's as challenging as it is consuming. With that in mind, however, it is worth noting that I do play video games in my spare time for the purposes of relaxation and escapism mostly. I don't play competitively and wouldn't consider myself to be any sort of exceptional gamer and, yes, I still enjoyed this game immensely (and even beat it for that matter).
Since the difficulty seems to be the main concern about Bloodborne, at least for those uninitiated, I'll address it now. This game, despite the plethora of challenges it throws your way, is fair; nothing in Bloodborne could be interpreted as "cheap" - if you die it's because you did something you shouldn't have or didn't do something you should have. Traits like patience, perseverance and awareness are wonderful internal allies to nourish during Bloodborne, as I can certainly attest to from experience, for they will make it more, how to say, congenial perhaps.
Bloodborne, as a whole, is a remarkable game. Once I started playing it I really couldn't stop and devoted all of my free time to it until I beat it and, guess what? I started playing it again immediately afterward for a second play through, haha, which is not something I do often. Needless to say, it's an immersive game that is difficult to put down once you get the hang of it. The gothic atmosphere present throughout the entire game is absolutely impenetrable, its aura being so thick that you'll really lose yourself amidst its depths quite unwittingly. The gameplay itself is very intuitive, the control schemes and general playability are all first-rate and the storyline is wonderfully vague, giving the player a chance for his or her imagination to run wild for a change.
Overall, Bloodborne is a masterpiece of contemporary gaming that should be experienced by anyone with an interest in exceptionally crafted games. It's challenging, it's uncompromising and it's rewarding beyond measure once you figure it out - believe me, when the big and bold "PREY SLAUGHTERED" appears on your screen for the first time you'll feel a true sense of triumph, guaranteed! Sure, you may only seen one of those for every ten or twenty you see of "YOU DIED" but its worth the plunge, again and again. Recommended with utmost certainty!

A Glorious Foray Into Survival Horror
on January 19, 2016
Posted by: StygianNocturne
The Resident Evil series is undoubtedly one of the most well known horror-themed video game franchises around. This particular collection - Resident Evil Origins - is of special interest to fans new and old alike because it encompasses the beginnings of the series all together. Resident Evil Zero is a prequel to the first game and Resident Evil is a remake of the original game that came out for the Playstation many, many moons ago.
Those that are familiar with the series from Resident Evil 4 and beyond may be a bit surprised at the game format present here. Instead of having a somewhat shooter-like gaming mechanism, both games in Resident Evil Origins utilize a fixed camera perspective that changes based upon where your character is in an area. As such, the controls and the direction you need to pursue to navigate change depending on your location, which is a bit different from the behind-the-back point-of-view employed in the newer games of the series. At any rate, those familiar with the "old school" Resident Evil will have no trouble adjusting here and neither will new fans, due to the modernized intuitive control scheme added to the collection.
The atmosphere of both of the games is very thick, giving gamers an absorbing and sometimes heart-racing experience that is a delight ... at least, if you're into that sort of thing. The graphics, despite being from games originally released over a decade ago, are exceptional and the remastering job done on Origins is spot-on. Sure, the visuals aren't going to look quite as nice as in a game like Bloodborne but, considering the age of both of the titles contained here, they are actually quite impressive and immersive, moreso than you may think.
Overall, I recommend Resident Evil Origins highly to anyone interested in the series at large or horror video games in general. The atmosphere present is awesome, the gameplay and puzzles are intelligent and the experience is one that isn't easy to walk away from. All-in-all, these games are memorable and are worth more than just one playthrough each. Enter the survival horror, indeed.
