Terrific indoor strip light
on June 11, 2022
Posted by: BillFromKC
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
This LED strip light set is extremely flexible for indoor installation and usage. The length is perfect for smaller bedrooms and trayed-in ceilings, and looks amazing when the strip itself is hidden behind moulding. It’s bright enough to be the only light source in a room when set to white, and as long as you have an outlet, placement options are nearly endless. The fact that it’s set up with programmable segments also gives you options on how it can be used; I placed it behind some ceiling moulding in my kid’s room and it functions as a very fun night light.
If there was any drawback to the Govee RGBIC LED strip light, it would be that one of the ways it looks coolest - wrapped up on its spool in sound-sensitive mode - is not really an option for usage.
Pairing to the network with the Govee home app is super easy. It also was easy to connect to the Google Assistant.
All in all, the Govee RGBIC LED strip light is something I highly recommend.

Good enough at their pricepoint.
on May 20, 2022
Posted by: BillFromKC
For the price, these are very solid performers. I had both great battery life and good (for the price) audio quality. The charge case was easy enough to use, both charging with from an USB power adapter and for charging the ear buds themselves. Changing the tips was easy enough to do, and the included tips were as comfortable as I remember JVC earbud tips being.
Setup was as easy as it could be; with my iPhone 11, they paired the first time. I was able to re-pair them with my child's iPad pretty easily as well.
Are there any drawbacks? Just the audio quality. While it's good for the price, you don't have to spend much more to get much-improved audio quality from mid-tier brands. Also, as with any earbuds of this style, the individual parts can be easily lost; JVC would be well-served to make an app just for finding these things.
All in all, I can recommend the JVC True Wireless Earbuds for those looking for something inexpensive for children, for the gym, or for situations that you want cheap earbuds that sound good for being at their price point.

Good low-end/beginner headset
on May 5, 2022
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
The Astro Gaming A10 Gen2 headset is a great basic wired gaming headset for the new or budget gamer. The drivers provide clear, clean sound with good highs and decent lows. The headband and ear cups are comfortable for extended sessions of gaming or listening. The microphone is decent enough for voice chat in a quiet environment but will pick up on background noise if your video card is running hot. The removable cable is a nice bonus at this price point, but replacing it will require a TRRRS-type cable, and some devices may not like this connector without the included mic/headphone connection Y-splitter. The inline volume control is also a little annoying as I found myself bumping it. Probably the best feature I found with this headset, however, is you don't need to install any software to your computer to use it properly. This means no bloatware.
If you're looking for something low-end that will work well, this is it.

Great little speakerphone speaker.
on February 12, 2022
Posted by: BillFromKC
from Kansas City, MO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and honest review,
The Dell MH3021P USB 3.1 mobile speakerphone adapter is more than just a great microphone and speaker combination for meetings where you'll be using Zoom or Microsoft Teams with more than 2 people in the room. It's also a terrific desk hub for USB-C and Thunderbolt 3+ compatible laptops, as it allows you to have a single connection between your laptop, your monitor, your USB-C PD-compatible AC adapter, and a pair of standard USB devices (such as a keyboard, mouse, and external hard drive. While it is disappointing that, for the price, it doesn't come with a power adapter or the ability to use this with a Bluetooth phone, it does what it does very well and I had zero issues while testing it.
Unboxing was a breeze - pull a piece of tape and slide the box open. The Dell Speakerphone device was in a plastic protector, and you'll find both a carrying case and an insert with simple instructions and warranty information.
There is a cable integrated to the unit. As I don't have a USB-C PD power adapter that can charge any of my USB-C laptops, I was not able to confirm if the integrated cable was for only your laptop or if it could connect to a USB-C PD power adapter so you could use a longer USB-C cable to charge your laptop. Along with the USB-C port, you'll also find two USB-A ports and an HDMI 2.0 port. Both my Dell and MSI laptops were able to display 4k video at 60hz on both of my 4k TV sets. I was also able to power two external 2.5 inch hard drives (1 WD Scorpio Black 7200 RPM unit, one WD Black Xbox drive) while using the speaker functionality.
So for the speaker and microphones - they're terrific. I was able to walk around my office while having a conversation over Teams and the other party was able to hear me clearly. I also tested the speaker with music, and most things I played sounded decent despite being played back in mono and the lack of bass extension; the audio quality was better than any laptop I've ever used.
As for drawbacks, Dell could have included a power adapter with this for the price they're charging. They could have also designed this with a removeable USB-C cable. Otherwise, it's quite stylish and works well. Also, had this come with Bluetooth so cell phones could be easily connected, this would have been perfect.
All in all, I can recommend the MH3021P for those of you with USB-C laptops who need a docking station or want a speakerphone for skype, teams, or another teleconferencing solution.

Good cooker with design flaws

the Ninja Foodi 14 in 1 Pressure Cooker Steam Fryer with smart lid is a good cooker. You can make anything you'd like it in, from pasta and meatballs to a porkchop that'll be the juiciest you've ever had. The controls are simple to use and everything about this is well designed, except the lid. If you cook things that splatter behind the coil, cleaning can be difficult.
If it was easier to clean, I'd rate it higher. However, as an "it does everything" cooker, the Ninja Foodi 14 in 1 is good.

A very decent pair of noise-cancelling TWS buds
on January 6, 2022
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
The LG Tone Free true wireless stereo earbuds are a solid pair of noise-cancelling earbuds. The charge case features USB-C and Qi wireless charging, analog audio input, and UV-C LEDs for sanitizing the earbuds while charging. Their sound is solid and clear, noise cancelling works, and the feature where you can use a special 3.5mm to USB-C cable to connect the earbuds to an analog source using the charging case is an interesting feature. My only problem is the earbud tips were a little flimsier than I'm used to, meaning I couldn't get a consistently great seal in my ear versus other brands I've used. Otherwise, they do fit well and don't move if you're active and have a solid feature set for the price.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Unboxing and setup:
Open the box and you're presented with a small charge case with a USB-C port on the back. Inside the charge case are the earbuds, with the medium tips already fitted. Under a plastic insert are a USB-C to USB-A cable for charging, a USB-C to 3.5mm/AUX jack cable for audio input, small and large ear tips, and instruction literature.
The charge case is about the same size as the charge case for those white earbuds we all know so well. The biggest difference here is the edges of the case, while smooth, are more pronounced, making them a little less pocketable. Their small size means it's still easy to take with you, however.
The cables are longer than expected; most bluetooth headphones come with USB cables about 3-6 inches long while LG managed to pack in cables about 18 inches long each. Well done in this regard.
The earbud tips are softer than most other brands. While you may find this more comfortable, I found them more difficult to make a proper seal with in my ears.
Pairing the first time is simple. The analog connection is also simple, and works with anything that outputs stereo sound through a 3.5mm jack. Re-pairing the headphones is also more simple than with other earbuds, should the need arise.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Usage and performance:
Audio performance with an iPhone 11 is great, even without the LG Tone Free app. Latency is almost non-existent, sound quality is pretty even overall. The noise cancelling can be enabled and disabled with taps on the earbuds themselves.
The app allows you to change nearly everything about the earbuds - Eq presents and settings, noice cancellation/ambient mode, and touch control enable/disable. Noice cancellation is particularly noticeable, varying between an ambient mode that allows you to hear your surroundings to a noise cancelling mode that nearly blocks out all sounds, from conversations in the same room to a loud TV.
Analog input mode is simple to use, too. Connect the USB-C to 3.5mm cable to your source and the charging case, and flip the analog in switch. The Tone Frees do the rest. Latency while connected this way is also almost non-existent.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Issues:
My only real gripe with these - and all LG earbuds - is the tips don't seal well in my ears. Other people in my family don't have this issue, however. My other gripe is the wireless charging is a little sensitive to some chargers, but it does generally work.
---------------------------------------------------------------
In closing, do I recommend the LG Tone Free Trie Wireless Stereo earbuds? Yes.

WiFi 5, Terrific range, not exactly easy setup.
on December 27, 2021
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
The Winegard Extreme 2.0 High Performance Outdoor Wi-Fi Extender is perfect for those who have large properties and want to cover those properties with a fast internet connection. It uses WiFi5 technology. The unit can work as a network bridge (meaning devices can see whatever is on the other side of the ethernet port) or can isolate the wifi devices to their own set of IP addresses (handy with multiple units and in a setup where you don’t want guest devices seeing your devices). The PoE adapter allows for gigabit ethernet passthrough, a single cable running to the access point eases installation, and PoE is an industry standard meaning you can use PoE switches to power these devices.
So how well does this work? I tested it two ways:
- My property, 200 foot by 1000 foot (approximately 4 acres) installed outside in wireless bridge mode approximately 100 feet from the house (150 foot 5e ethernet cable providing power only)
- My in-laws house, main floor inside, on a property approximately 100 feet by 300 feet, using wired bridge mode (using the included PoE injector)
In full wireless bridge mode on my property, the unit got decent performance overall. Speeds ranged from 130 mbps to 220 mbps, depending on the backhaul used. Speeds at that distance were more stable with 2.4 GHz than they were with 5 GHz. From the access point, I was able to connect an additional 325-ish feet using an iPhone 11 and the 2.4 GHz band; I’m sure some devices could probably reach to 500 feet with this unit.
Using wired bridge mode on my in-laws’ property, I found that the 5GHz signal was solid throughout their house, even with its plaster and board wall construction. Their attic, which was always a nightmare for connectivity, is finally stable with this access point. 5 GHz doesn’t work through the brick, while 2.4 GHz works through the yard within 100 feet of the house.
Setup is the only complicated thing about the Wineguard. By default, it isolates devices that connect to it via wifi and doesn’t allow devices connected to ethernet or the wifi it’s connected to to access the configuration pages. Setting the device to “bridge” mode fixes this.
All in all, Winegard Extreme 2.0 High Performance Outdoor Wi-Fi Extender provides excellent 802.11ac performance in a tight package.

Solid fans, though kind of pricy
on December 18, 2021
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
The Razer Kunai Chroma RGB 120mm LED PWN performance fan 3 pack is a great way to add RGB to a case with either a glass or mesh front panel or a mesh top panel. There is plenty of airflow, the fans are relatively quiet unless they're at full speed, the daisy-chaining feature is terrific if you lack a large number of RGB connector ports, and they come with the rubber anti-vibration mounting hardware instead of standard screws so the fans don't create hum by vibrating your case. The only real drawback is the price for the fans; while I understand that addressable RGB is expensive, these fans are actually a little more expensive than those that come from a certain ship if you look carefully for those other fans; that's where I dinged them a star.
If you already have Razer gaming peripherals, this is the way to go as you will control their lighting with the same software you're already controlling your keyboard, mouse, headset, and other lighting with. In terms of fan quality, they're great and I can recommend them.

Impressive build quality, unimpressive sound
on December 15, 2021
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased opinion.
TL;DR - great build quality across the board, good audio quality for phone calls, low audio latency, poor audio quality for music, and iffy connections for the charging cables. They're a good option if you want Bluetooth sunglasses but, like other brands, they have their issues.
Now for more details:
First, the great. I picked the Starman model and found their build quality to be absolutely impeccable. They have the right amount of flex in their titanium frame to be comfortable, the polarized lenses are made of polycarbonate, and (even though this pair was too small for me) they're comfortable to wear thanks to their light weight, being not much heavier than a pair of cheap plastic sunglasses. Phone calls with HD voice-capable phones and using services like Facebook Messenger, Microsoft Teams, and Apple Facetime sound great. Audio latency was near zero on my iPhone 11, meaning that these are good enough for gaming. Also, unlike other brands of smart glasses, these come with a power brick for charging, which is handy if you don't have any spare chargers from previous phones you owned.
Now for the okay stuff. The speakers in the earpieces of the frame use the same technology that "true wireless stereo" earbuds use, meaning they either each independently connect to your phone or one side connects to the other and then to your phone; what this means is you'll occasionally get a dropout or very slight audio latency on one side. Also, there is no noise cancelling for the mics, meaning that they'll pick up on sounds around you. The gloss finish on the earpieces is also prone to picking up fingerprints and hairline scratches; a matte finish would have been a better option here.
Finally, the bad. The audio quality for music and games is poor, very tinny. The drivers also get too loud and distort easily; I had this problem with bass-heavy hip-hop and jazz especially, but also with 70's/80's rock and pop, classical music, and metal being particularly bad, the drivers making a screeching sound while Kirk Hammett shredded in Metallica's "One". Also, while I get that Bluetooth sunglasses work better with a proprietary charging solution than they do with either a barrel tip, USB-B micro or USB-C connection, at least make the magnetic charging connections stronger so just bumping the shelf the glasses were sitting on while charging doesn't cause a disconnection.
In closing, I'm a fan of these sunglasses but they have problems that need to be fixed in next year's model. Another brand I've used was able to get the audio mostly right, but the build quality and the lenses weren't great. Lucyd got the build quality and the lenses right, but didn't get the musical audio quality right. If you're buying them for making phone calls on the go, they're a winner. They're also a winner in terms of comfort and style. With the audio and charge cable issues fixed, these would be a 5/5, but as they sit, I have to ding them on those two issues. Still, I can recommend these to anyone who's an early adopter.

Simple and adequate protection
on December 4, 2021
Posted by: BillFromKC
from KCMO
I received this product in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
I’ll keep this short and sweet - the LifeProof WĀKE case is made out of plastic that feels high quality, provides simple and adequate protection for drops where your iPad lands on its edges or back, and is easy to install and remove. The fact it’s made mostly from recovered sea plastic is a nice bonus. Keep in mind that you will need a screen protector of some sort if you’re planning on being active or allowing children to use the iPad with this, as it doesn’t provide screen protection. But all in all, I recommend this case for most people with iPads and other tablets that want a simple way to protect their device.

There's no guarantee that ATSC tuners will work with ClearQAM cable channels, and even so, the greater majority of cable providers now scramble all cable channels. Including OTA channels. Because the FCC changed the rules and they're allowed to do this now.

Big Time 3-D problems
By Mike
I am writing to review the “XBR-55X850C”. HOWEVER, I have read multiple web pages that state this problem is happening with all Sony 3-D televisions, in the United States AND Europe, and that customers are not receiving ANY customer service, or any help from Sony whatsoever.
I have called 3 times and have been hung up on each time.
So, if you are looking for a great 3-D experience and excellent SONY customer service, LOOK ELSEWHERE. Sony rolled out an update for this television at the end of November of 2015. After the update, when viewing 3-D content, the display mode function of the current screen is continuously showing the current screen mode of the television. ALL THE TIME. Coming in and out up to 7 times a minute.
So, while watching a 3-D movie, every 5 to 60 seconds, the words “Wide Mode Full” flashes on the screen in the lower left hand corner. It NEVER stops. Sony is aware of this problem, unfortunately, Sony customer service is rude & unhelpful with this issue. They claim that “Sony is aware of this and is working on an update”. When I asked when the update would be released, Sony representatives claim they do not know when this update will be available.
Every Sony representative has hung up on me after not being able to satisfactorily answer the simplest of questions.
Anyone looking for a great 3-D experience, look elsewhere. Sony does not care about this problem. After all, they already have our money.
If you think this is the same old Sony with great products, high standards, and great customer service, THINK AGAIN! This is not your father’s Sony. This is the new, corporate Sony that just wants your money.
Everyone out there looking for a good 3-D T.V. should stick with Samsung. I wish I did. I thought I was “upgrading” from Samsung to Sony.

...things get fixed after they get broken. I have this TV as well, and customer service people have no idea when Android Marshmallow will hit this TV set, let alone any of the other 2015 Sony TVs. Considering the Google Nexus Player got borked by the update though, that's probably a good thing the update hasn't hit yet.

Found it is difficult, not intuitive, to program. Others have said if you loose power all your programming is lost, but we haven't lost power yet so can't confirm. Bootleg Copy of Secret Life of Pets
By Disappointed
About 15 minutes into the movie the volume became muted and a message came on the TV that this was a bootleg movie. An unauthorized copy. Be very careful purchasing DVD's or Blu Ray movies from Best Buy. They just may leave you and your grand children very disappointed as it did our family.

This could very well be your DVD or Blu-Ray player
January 20, 2017
causing your issues. The Film Industry (MPAA and associated groups) are known for their draconian DRM systems, first with DVD and now with Blu-Ray and 4k Blu-Ray.
if your Blu-Ray player isn't connected to the internet, connect it to the internet and update its firmware. That should fix all your issues.

This is the future of WiFi
By neio11
I threw (recycled) away my wifi extenders plus I am now able connect a device with an ethernet cable without having to run cables through the walls because each node has 2 ethernet ports. So for instance, I have one node connected to my modem and an ethernet switch. My 2nd node in another room is connected to an NVR for my security cameras. The speed through the nodes is surprisingly fast. The NVR is capturing HD videos from 3 cameras and it seems to capture fine. The 3rd node is in my living room area. The whole house is covered! Please put a password on your wifi otherwise you'll be supplying FREE wifi for your neighbors. I can have full internet access from 3-4 houses away from my house. I thought installation would be a pain considering you have to setup each node. Well, I shouldn't say "have to" because you don't have to use all 3 nodes. You can use only 1 or 2 and give the 3rd to me. haha. No but setup is a breeze! The only thing is that you have to use a smart device such as a tablet or phone, to do the setup. Velop currently doesn't support PC-based setup but I hope Linksys changes that especially for us "techies"!!! It works with Alexa. You can ask #Alexa what the wifi password is... so they say. I haven't had much success with it yet. It looks clean and neat. It doesn't all those antennas sticking out of it which makes it aesthetically pleasing.
I'm loving so far!

The setup process basically forces you to put a...

...password on your WiFi network. In fact, it's one of three things it asks when you set up the parent node, the other two being "Do you connect directly to the internet or through a modem/router device provided by your ISP?" and what to call your wireless network.

Blazing Speed, Best In Class Performance!
By gadgetguy11
The Linksys - Velop Tri-Band Whole Home Wi-Fi System (3-pack) is packaged in a beautiful & functional box with magnetic closure - it exudes quality! Each Node is protected individually. Just looking at the box, you expect a premium, esoteric product... & Linksys delivers that & more in spades! The shapely Nodes are beautiful & blend with any decorating style.
Simple set-up via the Linksys iOS or Android App. Within minutes, you are ready to go online.
As shown in attached photo, I have 90 wireless devices utilized over 5,000 sq feet / 3 floors: this is a challenging application for high speed Wi-Fi that includes: connected major appliances; BAS ceiling fans & Haiku Wi-Fi connected lights; Wi-Fi Thermostats; Netatmo Wi-Fi Weather Station; 65 Hue Lights; Connected exterior door locks; Wink Wi-Fi connected devices; connected iDevices, Nest & Arlo cameras; iPads; iPhones & computers. Finally, Streaming from 4) Apple TV's; Nixplay Wi-Fi Photo Frames.
And now the Results:
Velop delivers the fastest Wi-Fi speed I have ever experienced and does so consistently! The attached screen capture shows 349 Mbps Download / 23 Mbps Upload. These are WIRELESS speeds!! I pay for 300 Mbps Download / 30 Mbps Upload & our internet service provider generally delivers 300 - 360 Download & 22 - 32 Upload.
Velop is the only Wi-Fi System I have found to date that actually delivers this sustainable speed and does not randomly disconnect the many devices.
High power Wi-Fi requires a high current source. Each of the 3) square white power supplies produce 12 Volt, 2 Amp output! 24VA (Volt Amps) is the highest output of any router I have tested. Better yet, the cable that plugs into each Velop is perfectly angled at the plug so the wire routs neatly through the cable management feature at the base. Brilliant design!
PRO's:
1- Fastest Wi-Fi Speed
2- Easy approximate 10 minute Set-up per hub
3- Velop Nodes are very attractive & blend with any architecture
4- Robust infrastructure yields dependable performance
5- 24/7 Support
6- 3-Year Warranty
7- Easy to use App with great diagnostics
8- Wire Management at the base is excellent & offers a wire free appearance.
9- Three Velop Nodes establish fast Wi-Fi speed across the house on any floor.
10- Expandable: Add an additional Node any time you prefer.
CON's:
1- IP Address range cannot be changed from: 192.***. My 2) existing Apple Time Capsule / Routers had IP addresses of 10.***, but they can be set to different ranges. A different IP Address range requires individually resetting a few devices that previously connected to the other range. For example, each Nixplay connected frame had to manually "Forget" the old Wi-Fi name of the previous SSID, then set up the same name with Velop, even though the Wi-Fi name and password are the same. On 13) Apple Airport Express devices, I had to power down each device to reset it from 10.*** to 192.***
2- IPv6 is not supported as of product release. This is surprising, as my three year old Apple Time Capsule / Router supported IPv6.
3- The first unit set up in under 10 minutes; however the remaining two hubs froze at the same exact place midway every time during set-up. After 6 failed attempts, I held each Node horizontally and kept my hand around it. Surprisingly, this procedure resulted in a virtually immediate set-up! Then I set each Node vertically & it continued to work great.
4- Only one Node can connect to the internet via ethernet. The other Nodes connect to the first Node via wireless mesh connection. I would prefer the option of connecting each Node to a wired ethernet connection. Linksys Technical Support indicated this may be added later as a software update. This would prove beneficial because the Nodes must be located fairly close together (my tests showed less than 40 feet apart at most).
CONCLUSION: My search for the "Ideal" Whole Home Wi-Fi System that consistently delivers 300 Mbps over 5,000 square feet with 90 devices ends here!! I am THRILLED with Velop & give it my highest recommendation!! It has proven to be the BEST ROUTER available for 2017!

Mine gave me IPv6 OOB

and even so, there was a firmware update it applied immediate after setup. I agree that the IP address range thing is annoying though, especially when you're moving from an existing network with static IP devices (NAS, printers, etc.)

Will it work with Hughesnet?

If Hughesnet outputs via ethernet from it's modem, then yes. You'll want to disable the Hughesnet modem's WiFi connection first, and if the Hughesnet modem has things like a file server or print server integrated into it, those features will no longer work.

Can I use them in Jamaica

As long as the Velop system works with channels available Jamaica and you can download and use the Linksys WiFi app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, sure. Jamaica uses the FCC plan with 2.4 and 5 GHz devices if I remember correctly.

What is the height so I can see if it will go under my couches? Thank you Shirley

It's probably 3 and a half inches high - a little bit taller than a roll of Charmin is wide.

I wouldn't necessarily plan on sending it under couches though - it got confused under my platform bed once and shut down, and was a pleasure to fish out of there.

It's not really recommended to leave this TV - or any TV not built for outside conditions - outside. Extreme humidity and freezing temps can damage the unit.

Amazon Fire TV Stick connects to your TV's HDMI port. Just grab and go to enjoy Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, YouTube.com, music, and much more.

Can I plug the Amazon Fire Stick into the DVR from DirectTV. ?

I can't access the HDMI on my tv because of its location. The DVR from DirectTv has an HDMI port. Can I plug the Fire Stick into that and have it work? Thanks.
If it's an HDMI input, then yes. However, you're better off to attach the Fire Stick directly to your TV using the HDMI extender cable or to your AVR if you're using a home theater setup.
