Tried a few- This is the BEST!

So first off I am a Best Buy Employee, wanted to be honest about that. I have owned a couple of the current 4k players. I am reviewing this with my Samsung KS8500 Curve 55in Tv. (10 bit with HDR) I had the Phillips and it was a good machine, started having some issues so I checked and Phillips was covering my issue under manufacturers warranty-First Class on their part. I received a full refund and after trying and seeing a few models I decided to upgrade to the Sony. Well I am pretty discriminating about my gear and this is amazing for the money! First off when you pick it up it's got weight- that is a good thing. I was impressed with the Phillips quality and this is just as good. Just with my initial setup with the HDMI 1 running directly to my Tv and the Audio HDMI running to my Denon AVR3300 Command Series AVR. Just plugging in and setting the HDMI'S properly the picture was pretty amazing! Nice to have a plug and play machine for a change. It definitely has more "tweak ability" than the new LG or Samsung 8500 or new 9500! (Price was at the lower end of all too) I run an Atmos system and WOW! I popped in Deep Water Horizon and was blown away. Picture was great and sound was phenominal. So nice to not wait for firmware upgrades for the unit to do what it's advertised to do. I'm still tweaking and fine tuning but am super happy. I'm glad I went with this unit, at the price of $299 it's really a deal. The only player that I've seen reviews of that were better than this was for the Oppo. We don't sell Oppo and that player is almost 2x the price! So definitely make sure you consider the Sony, I love my Samsung Tv but their player just doesn't even get close to this thing. Buy with confidence and remember with Best Buy you have a minimum of a 15 return period. If you have a tv with 4k and HDR this is very easy to justify. Boots up as fast as my other regular 1080 blu-ray and the apps are great! Highly recommended! Waiting for my code for the free DVD's that I'm supposed to get but I am still happy even if I don't get that coupon. Highly recommended!!!!

EPIC!

So after briefly taking a 7000 series for a test drive I had that classic "Is this everything I was looking for?" moment. So utilizing Best Buy's amazing return policy I took it back. In the time it had been since my original purchase this model was released. So obviously in store when 4k content is being played the 8500 looked great! Knowing that at home my content would consist of mostly 1080p material I could only hope that the "up conversion" built into the unit would make everything look better than my 7000. So upon getting this home I played standard HD content provided from my television provider I was pleasantly surprised. I know that this is not a full back lit display but it's ability to dim different zones It stands up quite well to it's $3k counterparts. So I decided it was time to demo a blu-ray and see how that looked- about 2 minutes into "the martian" I realized that I've never seen a tv look so amazing for this money. Absolutely stunning!!!! The reds of "Mars" were beautiful and the black bars at the top and bottom faded into the darkness of the room. Hands down the best blacks I have seen since my Pioneer Kuro Plasma. I stood in the middle of my room with my 7.2 home theatre sound and just had my jaw on the floor. Normally I would start tweaking the picture from the minute I got a new TV but this was perfect! I am going to have the Geek Squad calibrate this unit soon but my initial feeling is that at $1999 I was getting way more than the price reflects. If you are on the fence about whether or not stepping up into this mid/higher tier television just know that your dollar is well spent. To say that if something happened to the tv and would I replace it I answer with a very enthusiastic YES! Run, don't walk to Best Buy and pick up this thing! I only now am a bit curious how the Samsung UHD Blu-ray player will look. Oh, and the HDR is a real deal upgrade, totally worth the couple dollars. Kudos to Samsung and as always Best Buy gave a great price and made me feel extremely confident in my purchase. 24 months of 0% financing helped too knowing that I have a little more time to pay this off. Thank you Samsung and thank you Best Buy!!!!

Smart features.
May 10, 2016
I can honestly say coming from a higher end 1080p LG that has a relatively high rating of most users I find the Samsung to absolutely blow that interface out of the water. I'll be honest I mostly use my "Apple TV" for my "smart features" but when it comes to 4k the Apple doesn't support that- (don't even get me started on that issue) but none the less the Samsung shines with Netflix especially. I've been glued to my remote seeking 4k content on Netflix. The quality is far above acceptable. So in the over-all response to the "smart features" I would say Samsung has raised the bar. The Interface is smooth, fast, and very attractive in design.

Response about cdmi connection:
April 23, 2017
I understand about the pass thru of 4k on my Denon but I am somewhat of a purist in the thought that the best signal is the most direct. I know that I should not see any segregation of signal when ran thru the receiver but I've read on some forums that if you really want to guarantee the integrity of the picture a direct plug into the tv is best. I run most devices thru the receiver and honestly I think the up convert has helped with standard 1080 content. Bottom line is that it's an option to do as I did but not necessarily a big difference. I just had extra high quality HDMI cables and did it this way. Ironically I use a Cinnamon from AudioQuest too- So good call!

LG update
May 3, 2017
So far I've heard the update is not guaranteed. Overall the build of the sony is epically better than the LG and the Menu system is almost embarrassing on the LG. I normally dig their equipment but so far I have seen no reviews that recommend it- in any way. Just something you may wan to consider.
