This WD My Cloud drive features a 4TB capacity and lets you stream media to compatible DLNA-/UPnP-capable devices or upload and access data on the go via PC, Mac and compatible mobile phones and tablets. Automatic backup helps safeguard your files.

This is NOT a long term storage device

I purchased and installed this unit 2 weeks ago. It works great. But then I noticed that it never stops running. The hard drive is constantly running, constantly making the traditional growling sound that external drives make, and constantly warm since the motor never stops turning. This is not good for durability. For 2 weeks now, the motor has not stopped running. It's on my desk, so even though the noise is relatively quiet, it becomes annoying after hours of hearing it.
I finally contacted WD Tech Support yesterday and received a response from Karl in Service. He said that if I have the remote functionality turned on, the drive will not enter sleep mode and will run continuously. This is its normal function and the only way to stop it is to eliminate the "Cloud" functionality of the unit. Eliminating the Cloud function just makes this unit an over priced normal external hard drive. However, a hard drive that runs continuously 24/7 is not going to last.
Therefore, the Cloud functionality of this device may be a cool novelty and some may have a specific use for it, but it is not practical to be used as a storage unit. Compared to traditional direct connect storage units, this one is very slow due to the wireless functionality. We are willing to put up with the slow speed because of the benefit of the cloud. However, now that using the cloud is not an option, this really is just an over priced, slow storage unit. I really thought it was cool until I realized this. Very disappointed.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

With a 2TB capacity and a Gigabit Ethernet interface, this WD My Cloud external network-attached storage device lets you easily save files via your existing Dropbox or other Cloud account and access them from devices connected to your home network.

Can I download and upload remotely?

I have noticed in other reviews that purchasers of My Cloud are having trouble accessing files from anywhere outside the home network (ie over the internet from remote sites). Is this an issue? Also, the product description states you need to have a Dropbox (or other) account to access your files. So does that mean I'm also paying for a larger Dropbox account just to use My Cloud when away from home? Thanks.
This is not the case. I am accessing my files remotely with no problems both from a cell phone and other computers over the internet. It works great for this purpose. You DO NOT need a drop box for any of this.
My problem with the unit is that by having this remote functionality turned on, the unit does not sleep and the motor runs continuously. WD Tech support told me that if remote access is turned on, the unit has to run continuously. This is a cloud killer for me. The unit will not last if it never stops spinning and working. But, by turning this functionality off, you now have just an over priced and slow (due to wireless transfer of data) storage device. It's a no go in my opinion. If you haven't purchased this, I recommend you stick with a traditional external storage drive. In my opinion, this unit was not ready for marketing as this is a major flaw.
