This is my second pioneer app radio. The Carplay interface works very nicely, although the carpal apps are very limited.
The one key piece of info that is not at all clear for new users with iOS 8. You must essentially choose to use the carpal mode (with lightning cable), or set up the system with Pioneers interface cable and HDMI for appradio mode. If you set it up for carplay, you cannot use appradio third party apps such as Waze. This is not at all apparent on Pioneers web site, or any of the marketing material that I have seen. For me, this is relevant because navigation is one of my main uses, and the native apple maps does not do live traffic recalculation, meaning that it can't reroute you or suggest alternative routes based on changing traffic conditions (as you will find in Waze, MotionX, Tomtom, etc.). As of right now, according to my research, Apple is not allowing carplay access to third party navigation apps. Keep this in mind as you are planning.
