I use the Chromebox on my TV
on November 24, 2014
Posted by: modalsystem
My Logitech Revue with Google TV stopped working after 3 years so I decided to buy a Chromebox.I really enjoyed using my Revue as buggy as it was and will never understand why Google could not have just stuck with Google TV and made it work properly and marketed it properly.Oh well.I am able to use my Logitech K700 keyboard/with trackpad that came with the Revue with the Chromebox also.To use it with my Chromebox,I got the Logitech Unifying Reciever. It did not work right away.I connected the Unifying Receiver to my laptop then downloaded the software for it on my laptop from the Logitech website and it paired with the K700 keyboard right away. Then I plugged the unifying receiver back into my Chromebox and the keyboard worked.Only took a few minutes.I love the K700 keyboard and only have to change the batteries about every 8-10 months.
Once I got used to surfing the web on TV with a full qwerty keyboard with the Revue, there was no way I was giving up that feature. The lack of a web browser is why I ruled out a Fire TV or Roku.I tried the Fire TV and loved the quickness and high quality streaming it had.If it had a web browser,I would have kept it.Is it too much to ask for a internet connected tv device to have a fully functional internet browser???Why do amazon, google, apple and roku seem to not understand that some people like having access to the internet on an internet connected TV device?
So I got a Chromebox, which is not really marketed for TV use,but unlike fire tv/apple tv/roku is a device that actually lets you watch any internet video or TV show(such as free Hulu) on your tv.How ironic that if you want to watch online TV shows(such as free Hulu) on your TV,you have to buy a device that is not really marketed for TV use.Truth really is sometimes stranger than fiction.I am not sure who is at fault for this, but I don't see why the media content companies and device manufacturers can't work something out.Sites like free Hulu have advertising anyway,so why annoy people by forcing them to cast or connect the content from a pc/smartphone/tablet?Why can't they let them watch using just the streaming device and its standard remote already connected to their TV?
I also considered getting one of the obscure brand android tv devices available on amazon but decided on the Chromebox as it could serve as a backup computer also.If anyone has used both,I would like to hear your opinion on how they compare to the Chromebox.
Here are the pros and cons of using the Chromebox on my TV so far:
Pros
-It plays any online video/TV show on my TV(including free Hulu)Every website that I have used on my laptop works with the Chromebox. It opens up the entire internet to your TV with a fully functional web browser.
-It's an extra computer for $150.It's quick and works smoothly.
Cons
-Video streaming picture quality with Chromebox is noticeably worse on my TV than it was with my Revue or my LG smart Blu ray player, especially for Amazon Video.I use to use my Revue for Amazon Video.I use Netflix on my blu ray player.Unfortunately,I made the mistake of buying a blu ray player without Amazon Video,so I may have to replace it with another one that has it.I would then use my smart blu ray player for Netflix and Amazon Video and use the Chromebox for everything else.
Note:When I first connected this to my TV,the text size on web pages was way too small.I adjusted this for TV by going to Chromebox settings>show advanced settings>web content and adjusted font size to very large and page zoom to 150%.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Tracfone+magicjack =home&cell phone for $10 month
on October 12, 2014
Posted by: modalsystem
I use an LG android tracfone and pair it with the magicjack app and it is a money saving machine. The magicjack app gives you free calls on android/apple phones/ tablets/iPod touch wherever you have WiFi,and I get WiFi almost anywhere in my area.Whenever I make a call the phone gives the option to use the magicjack or tracfone dialer which helps you save tracfone minutes. The more I use the magicjack app over WiFi,the more tracfone minutes I build up as any unused tracfone minutes carry over when I add the $20 tracfone card every 3 months.Lately,I have even been able to place calls with the app over 3G on my phone, but it works better and is free over WiFi.I turn the 3g data off and use WiFi as much as possible.
I use magicjack for $35/year($3/month) for my home phone service and have the app set to use my home phone number. When someone calls me at home it also rings my cellphone and tablet if I am connected to WiFi.Because of the app, I only need minimal tracfone talk/text/data for $7 a month( I buy the $20 tracfone card every 3 months which adds 180 minutes/180 texts/180 mb's data) for rare occasions when i don't have access to WiFi.So I get home phone service and cell phone service for $10 a month.
If you don't have or want to use a cordless or corded home phone, you could pay even less than I do using the tracfone/mj app combo. Here's how:
If you used the free version of the mj app with an android tracfone with triple minutes with the $20 tracfone card, you would get almost unlimited minutes wherever you have WiFi and 60 tracfone minutes/60 texts/60 mb's data/month for when you can't access WiFi for $7/month.The free app version gives you a number that has an asterisk at the beginning and end.
For $10 a year(.84 cents/month) extra, you can choose your own regular U.S. number for the app making your total cost for phone service about $8 a month.
As of now,I prefer the tracfone/magicjack/magicjack app combo for $10/month because I still like to use a regular cordless phone at home to give the cell phone a rest .Very happy with tracfone and magicjack service.

Home phone for $3 a month+free mobile calling app
on July 15, 2014
Posted by: modalsystem
I have been using magicjack for 5 years and have used all 4 versions of the device. You need a high speed internet connection to use this device. The magicjack GO includes 1 year of phone service. After that it is $35 a year($3 a month). It also includes use of the magicjack app on your android or apple phone or tablet,as well as on an ipod touch or kindle fire hd.I use the magicjack app on my android phone and tablet and get free phone service wherever I have a WiFi connection.
The magicjack app is ideal for mobile phone plans where you have limited talk minutes. It is also ideal for when you can't get a cellular signal but can get WiFi.If you get WiFi almost anywhere like I do, you can also use the app on a mobile phone with no phone plan at all and use it as a free WiFi phone. If traveling out of the country, you can call back to the U.S. or Canada for free with the app or device.Magicjack to magicjack calls are free worldwide.
Unlike other free calling apps, the magicjack app allows you to connect with almost any landline or mobile phone in the U.S. or Canada for free, not just other people with the same app.
I have the app set to use my home number so when someone calls my home number it also rings on my mobile phone and tablet as long as they are connected to WiFi.
Many tablet/ipod touch owners are unaware they can use their device as a free WiFi phone. It works like a speaker phone and if you want a private conversation, just plug in earbuds/headphones as the mic will still pick up your voice. No special headset needed.I actually prefer to have longer conversations on my tablet with lightweight headphones for comfort as well as the microphone and speakers having better sound quality than a cellphone or cordless home phone.
I use prepaid minutes on a tracfone android mobile phone for rare occasions when I am away from home and don't have access to a WiFi connection. My total phone bill for all phone services comes out to about $10 a month(magicjack and magicjack app for $3 a month and tracfone with minimal minutes for $7 a month). The more I use the magicjack app over WiFi,the more tracfone minutes I build up as any unused tracfone minutes carry over when I add a $20 tracfone card every 3 months.Very happy with magicjack and tracfone service as both have worked well for me for several years.

Pay less for home phone and cell phone.

I just started using the new magicjack plus after also using the previous two models. The new plus has even clearer call quality and also includes use of the magicjack app using the same number as your magicjack plus home phone service. The magicjack app can be used on apple or android phones and tablets.I use it for free phone service on a kindle fire HD.If I have a wifi connection,I get free phone service with the magicjack app.I use a tracfone cellphone for rare occasions when I am away from home and don't have access to wifi.My total phone bill for all phone services comes out to about $10 a month. The new magicjack plus includes six months of service. After that it is about $30 a year($2.50 a month) or you can save even more if you sign up for a five year plan for about $100($20 a year or $1.67 a month).Very happy with magicjack and tracfone service.I would take all reviews with a grain of salt, including mine, considering that magicjack is a company that is disrupting the profit margins of the bigger phone and cable companies and I suspect some of the online reviews are from people with different agendas who don't actually use magicjack.Try it out for yourself and I think you will be happy with the results.
