Nikon D800 DSLR Camera Body:Features a game-changing 36.3 megapixels resolution and FX-format sensor for professional photographers who demand superior speed and performance and end results of the highest quality. Combine it all with a powerful EXPEED 3 image-processing engine to render levels of photographic texture, nuance and detail that rival some of the best studio cameras. Plus, HD movie mode shoots at 1080p Full HD for spectacular videos. Although identical to the Nikon D800E in every other aspect, the D800 applies the full effect of the optical low-pass filter to prevent false color and moiré for consistent performance in all shooting situations.Memory card sold separately.

Deciding between 5DMkIII or a D800? read

I was deciding for months between a 5d MkIII and a D800, and played with both until I finally decided - and haven't regretted it since. For the same price as a 5dMkIII with 24-105mm lens, I was able to purchase a D800 with a 50mm prime and 28-300 super-zoom lens. I've been a long-time Canon user but this camera convinced me to switch. Notwithstanding your own skills, the dynamic range and number of pixels are two major criteria for image resolution/quality. High ISO of Canon is definitely cleaner, but you have to consider how often you will be in a situation that you need such ISO levels. (i.e. light, flash, tripod, etc.) Make sure you have fast memory cards, great lenses and a deep digital storage set up. You will not regret this camera - which is bordering on medium-format level IQ.
Two things that you should be aware of:
1)the LCD displays a touch on the greener side, which is NOT a reflection of the actual image: remember that the LCD is only PREVIEW. shoot RAW and you will have complete control of color gamut.
2)you may experience some lubricant oil droplets on the sensor. I suggest you go search online to read about it. (i have seen two small droplets at f22 - and will wait until i have >2000 images before i get it cleaned)

What's great about it: Depth of control, packed with features, plenty 'o pixels, dynamic range
What's not so great: steeper learning curve than MkIII, LCD color accuracy is misleading
I would recommend this to a friend!

Fantastic walk around lens

I have this for my D800. This is a fantastic super-zoom lens for an FX DSLR. The image quality isn't at the same level as narrower zoom lenses (75-300mm) or primes, but that's just being picky. For most people, your sill will limit you more than this lens. Great for traveling and a walk-around lens. Grab a 14-24mm and you're done! Also, go to DxOMark for a comprehensive review of this lens. And don't forget, if attached to a DX, then expect 1.5x crop factor and range (42-450 mm equivalent).

nikon lens

when buying a Nikon lens in 28-300mm for my d600 how do I know the lens will be an fx lens??
Go to sources like Nikon, DxOMark (or similar) and verify whether the lens you are interested in (under specs) is an F-mount and FX lens. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is definitely an FX lens.
