I'll get straight down to it. Can this laptop play a graphically intensive game at high settings? The answer: mostly YES. I've tried Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Street Fighter IV, Forza Horizon 3, Watch Dogs 2 and Doom at max settings at 1080p. With the exception of Forza Horizon 3 in above car view, they all played smoothly at 60 FPS. FH3 seems to also do 60 FPS but in this particular above car view there are little random slowdowns that I'm not sure is due to the graphics card, graphics driver, the slower 7200 RPM HDD or something else.
Besides gameplay, this laptop behaves how you would expect it to behave with its given components (Intel Core i7, 12 GB ram, etc). The speakers are okay for a 17" laptop but nothing special. Battery life is somewhere between 1.5 hours (gaming) and maybe up to 4 hours of light interner browsing.
My only problem is the backlit keyboard. The backlighting was broken out of the box. Upon searching Google you'll find that there are numerous problems with Asus backlit keyboards among various models some fixed with a driver update but others needing to be returned to the manufacturer.
Last observation: The outside surface of the laptop is prone to fingerprint smudges that are not easily wiped off. Very irritating.
All in all it's a decent laptop ar a decent price compared to the competition.
