Linksys RE6500 Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender: Improve signal quality and fill in the dead zones in your wireless network with this extender. Plus, an audio jack on the back of the extender lets you plug in your speakers and listen to music from your wireless devices, like smartphones, tablets and computers.

Doesn't work when you set up security

Setting up the range extender is no problem. Plug it in, click on Linksys Extender Setup when you see it in your network. My DVD player (what I use to watch Netflix) connected no problem and signal strength improved from 20% to 80%. I then found out that if you connect to Wifi this way, it's not a secure connection. That's when the trouble started.
Connected the RE6500 to my computer to set up the Wifi protected access. Entered my router passcode. Checked my DVD player, and signal strength dropped back to 20%. Spent a lot of time on my own trying to see if I set it up incorrectly. Finally gave up and called customer support. They tell me that the extender is on WPA2-Personal. I'm not a techie. This apparently means that the extender sends out a signal on a secure mode under this protocol. Customer support says my DVD player is probably not compatible with this and to check the DVD firmware. I checked the settings on my DVD player--it has WPA and WPA2 security protocol. In a nutshell, if you want secure Wifi access, the RE6500 may not be compatible with your device. Don't know why it should be that difficult. Returning this thing tomorrow.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
