Nice but Get the Geek Protection
on December 15, 2016

I wish I had bought the camera at Best Buy with the Geek Protection. I bought it at a small camera shop. I have had Nikon cameras for over 30 years and this one seemed like a lightweight alternative to hauling the pro camera for essentially, snapshots.
After waiting months for the camera to be released, it came in just as we were leaving on vacation. I took a few shots at home and it worked okay, so decided to take it instead of my pro gear because we were hauling an extra dog. After 75 photos the battery was low and wouldn't charge (it just drained what little charge was left in it). Used the iPhone the rest of the trip. When I returned home, I took it in at barely a month after purchase and couldn't exchange it. It was sent in to Nikon for a warranty repair to the main circuit board and also the auto focus.
If it had not been under warranty the repairs would have cost $496. Yeah, same price as list and no it wasn't a replacement. The serial number told me that. Why they fiddled around with taking it apart instead of just replacing it is beyond me. On top of all that, the charging cord went in with it, since we didn't know if it was the cord or the camera with a problem. The cord that came back with it wasn't the Nikon cord. It was a cell phone cord with a tag on it from a cell phone provider. Now I am waiting for Nikon to replace the cord.
Moral is, get the Geek Squad protection on this one.
The Photos are decent and the camera is lightweight. Don't expect it to be a replacement to pro gear by any means.
Get an extra battery and a wall charger you can stick the battery in to charge. If your are used to charging your camera in the car with an USB data port or in the backcountry with a battery pack or a solar panel, it won't charge. It pretends to charge and after the 3-5 hours of charging, the battery is deader than a door nail. Get plenty of extra batteries and charge them in the front country. The camera guide is very specific about not using any other charging device especially cell phone chargers or cords.
Get the Geek protection.
Take your cell phone if it has a camera. Or take a backup camera.
