Well. Having had experience using tripods as a teenager myself, even though it was several years ago, I would say young people are intelligent enough to be able to figure out how to use all of the ones that Best Buy carries. Most of the full size models are durable and sturdy enough to get knocked around or bumped through use. It might just be a matter of deciding how big the tripod is you want to buy. Teenagers can read the simple printed directions that often are placed in the box this equipment usually comes in when bought in the store. If you would prefer, you could go to the store and check out the selection of tripods they have there. You could also take the teen to the store and check out the selection and ask them what they want to do with it. Then you could make the best intended and suitable purchase for the specific teenager.
