Lukewarm out of the box, tinkerers may see value.

Picked this up about a month ago, open box in "excellent condition" from the Best Buy website. Most of the table was in said condition except for the dust cover which has a huge crack in it, tried to get it replaced via Sony's warranty program and was shot down due to it not effecting the operation of the table, whatever. The stock cartridge is okay, nothing special. It is user replaceable which is what I intended for it even before I bought the turntable, this is where a glaring issue arose. The connections that run from the cartridge down the tonearm to the board underneath are possibly the worst I've ever seen. Cheap, connected too tight, and flimsy. The red wire pulled right off of the connection when I went to replace the cartridge, after trying to solder the connection back on I gave up and ripped the wiring off the board and out of the arm and proceeded to order new tonearm wire with pre-installed terminations. If you like to tinker, know how to solder and don't mind voiding your warranty I'd say pick this one up. The tonearm wiring is a weak link that should be fixed if they produce another iteration, the DAC and software that let you rip your records however is very nice. The software is bare bones but gets the job done. The rips I've made from the turntable since installing the new wiring sound great, and if I ever want to swap the cartridge again I know it'll be easy since the new connections are nice and sturdy.

misinformation out there regarding the presence of a pre-amp...is there one in this model?

Hey Wms,

There is a pre-amp, it's actually pretty good too. Much better than the phono stage on the Onkyo A-9050 I'm using it with.
