Very Necessary

The battery life is good, 18 minutes of flying is a lot time in the air when you think about it, having a couple extra batteries makes having the Karma Drone easier and more enjoyable. If you pack the backpack that the drone comes standard with you can fit up to three batteries comfortably, one in the drone and two along the sides.
I highly recommend purchasing at least one extra battery.

Great Drone for A Beginner
on March 7, 2017

To start I've never owned a drone that has been more than a Walmart $50 that a crashed 10 mins into owning it.
I've been waiting for the re-release of the Karma Drone "though the name makes it sound sketchy" my drone arrived and instantly I took 1 hour to charge the battery and went thru the setup process.
The drone remote comes with a little tutorial and as a person who enjoys video games the controls are pretty strait forward. The remote itself is pretty cool it's android based and downloads maps of where you are and shows you where the fly zones are. Also will need to update your software in the remote and drone this can be done while the remote is connected to wifi.
So after the hour charge I took it out to a local park that has a lake, I found a area that was clear and relatively flat. I proceeded to setup the drone "added the propellers" when you power up the drone it will connect to the GoPro remote which is handy as well as it will connect the camera automatically.
The drone comes with the features of auto take off and land/return to home so the drone will return to you at the push of a button.
I proceeded to fly about 19 total
Mins before the drone told me to return home and it showed I had about 2 mins of flight time left which wasn't too bad considering how fast I flew as well as I recorded video the entire time.
Some features that aren't really talked about are
The drone has the ability to fly and pan around you and it will focus on a center point and video 360 degrees. The timer that shows available flight time is nice. It also has a built in GPS and if the drone is out of view it will show you on the GoPro remote where it is on the map.
I won't even mention the karma grip it's awesome other than it's a little bulky to maybe mount on a helmet. But it takes very smooth video.
For someone who's just wanting to film things here and there and enjoy some scenery as well as they want to have some smooth handheld video the Karma drone is great, folds up very nice and comes with a hard shell backpack. A extra battery is $99 and I believe it's worth it once you've flown about 40 mins you realize that's a lot of video to edit.
The drone does lack some features that the enthusiast is going to want, such as the sensors to detect impact, but my opinion if you keep it in view and stay aware of your surroundings with the karma you'll be alright.

Take aerial shots with this GoPro Karma drone. Its Karma Stabilizer lets the included HERO5 Black action camera capture shake-free videos, while the Karma Grip provides reliable stabilization for handheld and mounted filming. The game-style controller with an integrated touch display makes Karma easy and fun to fly.Fly Responsibly:Before takeoff, update all software and firmware, and read the instructions thoroughly.See the FAA website for registration requirements and information about flying a drone safely: https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/. Amazing products

First, let me clarify something. Best buy says the maximum range on the Karma drone is 3200 ish feet. Not completely true. There is a setting in the Karma remote that allows you to disable the "safe" distance option.
I have personally flown the Karma successfully about 5600 feet (a mile is 5280 feet) before it decided to automatically return to the take-off point. And by the way, it was very cool to see it autopilot itself the entire way back to me. Once the drone is back in range of the remote touching any stick will allow you to resume control.
So on to the main part of the review:
The Karma drone package is by far the best deal for the majority of people. For $1100, you get the drone itself, battery, gopro hero 5 black camera ($399 value), gopro stabilizing stick (actually very cool in and of itself, $299 value), and a few other attachments.
The camera of course can be used separate from the drone; and let me tell you, that camera is very cool. It is waterproof to 30 feet without a case, can be voice controlled, touch screen (with on screen editing functions), and of course video that rivals more expensive camera systems.
The handheld stabilizer is much more useful than I thought it would be. It, along with the hero 5 internal antishake mechanism, result in a butter smooth picture even while hiking, mountain, biking, etc. Let me tell you, it makes a huge difference watching footage during mountain biking without and with the stabilizer. Without the stabilizer footage can be nausea inducing. WITH the stabilizer, it was like watching the star wars speeders flying between the trees.
And guess what.... the Karma drone WORKS PERFECTLY! Yes, that's right, none have fallen out of the sky since re-release.
I'm getting about 18 minutes of battery life. However, the Karma will return to you with about 2 minutes of battery remaining, so expect about 15 minutes of useful flying time. (Let's see, 18-2 = ... well you get the idea)
The battery charges to full in an hour. I bought two extra batteries and will buy an extra charger once they become available.
Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. It's really the drone purchase that made the most sense for me.
Hopefully this helped!
