The Dread is Gone

What I hate about a TV purchase is not the cost. I don't love spending money, but most of us see the modern television as a "life essential".
At a time when going to theaters is an expensive, crowd-bearing experience, the modern TV - now integrated with our WiFi, cell phone, photo albums, cameras, games, music, video collections - is actually high quality entertainment for relatively less than what a color TV cost 40 years ago.
But I HATE setting up new electronics! It requires the worst that life demands of us: reading and following instructions!
I'm not alone, but apparently Sony has heard the cries of my people. I did it myself; the instructions are mostly pictures, and to my wife's surprise, I can't complain. The assembly is well thought out and user friendly.
The new 55" 4K Smart LED (UltraHD)/HD is amazing, and it practically synced and integrated its own set-up with my WiFi and PC before I even attempted it. It's really hard to find something to complain about. And I'm 66!
I would recommend this to a friend!

what is the footprint of the stand - ie the stand dimensions - not the tv dimensions, I've got those

Until someone actually measures for you, I'm good at estimating. I'd put the length (facing the screen, that's the width) at 24" across the bottom. It protrudes about 7" under the front of the TV, and two legs extend about 8" behind for a total length of 15". If you had an aerial photo of the screen facing left, the stand would have longer legs, but a [ look.

How much space is there under the actual TV? I need to know if I can fit a cable box there, approximately 2 inches high?

Not using the provided stand. It sits really low, I doubt there's even an 1.5" clearance for anything bigger than a smartphone. And even if your box is really slim, it will probably obstruct the remote sensor.
I've decided to use shelves, eventually. A wooden or polymer chest about the size of a small wagon (18"X 30" minimum).
For now I'm just glad all the connectors had long cables to sit alongside the stand.

Can the stand be removed so it can be mounted on the wall ?

You must attach the stand. It's in an inner box.

What type of stand you guys give with this tv and what the material

It's pretty Spartan. It can't look bad because it's too hard to see, but it's simple and strong. It's a one-piece metal bar (about 2cm in dia.) with two brackets that fit in two slots inside the TV. When it sits in front of you, it's hard to even notice it. But the screen is well-secured, and it took 15 minutes to assemble. That includes reading instructions.
