Best all around Bluetooth headphone.

The Bose QC35 is essentially a wireless version of the QC25 which I found to be one of the best portable headphones due to its insane noise isolating abilities and very good sound quality. Can Bose take this experience further? We’ll see…
The packing box is very clean and straight forward showing the QC35 on the front, Bose logo on the sides and details on the features such as Bluetooth and active noise cancellation on the back in various languages. The packaging opens by sliding out the contents in which inside it the manuals, warranty registration and the carrying case. Within the, you’ll find the micro-USB charging cable to replenish the built in battery that can last up to 20 hours on Bluetooth and 40 hours on wired connection. Also, you have the 3.5mm to 2.5mm cable to provide a wired connection if you do not wish to use Bluetooth or the battery dies altogether. The QC35 is folded up neatly in the main compartment as well as an airplane adapter for receiving audio.
The QC35 in the current silver finish I have is a very handsome and professional looking headphone that will look good on just about anyone and any style. The ear cups pivot and rotate very freely allowing for a very snug and comfortable fit. Headband adjustment has individual clicks to ensure precise extension along with a generous amount of leeway for larger heads. The padding on the ear cups are of synthetic memory foam based leather which feels very soft to the touch around the ears. The speakers are angled to improve comfort as well as creating a more natural acoustic delivery to the ears improving soundstage perception. The inner part of the headband is made of alcantara which is a very luxurious form of suede found in sports cars. This is coupled with the same synthetic leather from the ear cups on the outer headband portion. Like with recent trends, the footprint of the QC35 is pretty much identical to the QC25 despite housing more circuitry inside. Construction is comprised of a specialized plastic that is a glassed-filled resin with metals in common stress areas resulting in a pretty confident feeling headphone in terms of everyday use.
Flicking the power switch to the middle turns on the QC35 in which it will auto connect to 2 previously connected devices. Holding the switch to the far right for 2 seconds puts it in pairing mode in which it is ready to pair. On the right ear cup is the volume up, play/pause, skip tracks, answering and hanging up phone calls and volume down button. Also, there is the micro-USB charging port and NFC ready pairing chip and over on the left ear cup is the 2.5mm port.
It’s usually always the smartest decision to wait and make sure you’ve developed something that you can proudly say is your best effort. I think that is something Bose has genuinely done with the QC35. This is most likely the best all-around portable headphone on the market today for the mass public looking in the premium category. No, it’s not the best sounding or the best looking or the most well-built headphone, however, it scores quite high in all of those categories which makes it such a safe recommendation.
First and foremost is the active noise cancellation capability of the QC35 which I believe is just a tiny bit better than the QC25 particularly in the area of hiss and signal to noise ratio. Now, the eerie silence is even more prevalent because the hiss produced by the electronic circuity is pretty much near or possibly undetectable. This is by far the best active noise cancelling available on the market. This coupled with a very balanced sound signature and a surprisingly open and well-crafted soundstage results in quite possibly the best possible sound experience you can get when outside in moderately to highly noisy environments without having to stick something into your ears. The treble and bass of the QC35 adjusts depending on the volume. At lower volume a happy EQ forms boosting the bass and treble to compensating for the human ears and the fletcher munson curve. At higher volumes, the bass and treble becomes more balanced and in line with the midrange. I primarily listen more towards higher volumes.
Dissecting more into the sound we’ll begin with the bass which is present, relatively even toned and extends pretty well into the deepest notes. It has composure for the most part, but when music gets complicated, it does sound a bit loose and slightly muddy. Midrange here is very nicely presented. Clean, clear and open. Vocals and instruments sound very convincing and the sense of depth is heightened by the sound signature but most importantly the angled drivers creating that acoustical effect that sound is coming to you from in front. Treble is also clear and open, but with a tad bit of grain that only really comes about when the music becomes complex. Overall, the sound is quite simply great and this is over Bluetooth connection. When wired, the sound is a bit more focused and the bass gains a bit more composure. Now, when factoring in the great sound quality along with the stunning active noise cancelling and amazing comfort and neutral and handsome look, the QC35 is hard to fault and has earned my recommendation for those looking for the best all-around Bluetooth headphone.

Stellar All-Rounder
on November 30, 2015
Posted by: Danny
Following in the prestigious heritage of the Everest line from JBL, the Elite 700 sits upon the top of its family of lifestyle consumer headphones. Though not a new type of product, in this day and a age it is still a first from JBL offering a headphone with a well-rounded feature set to ensure these will satisfy your needs in nearly all scenarios.
The packaging is typical of a premium headphone offering that grand appearance once you open the flap to reveal the contents. The Elite 700’s is nicely presented in a cut out. Once removed you can lift the box in which inside is where the zipper carrying pouch is located. This pouch is primarily good for scratch protection, as it does not have any reinforcements to absorb impact damage. Kind of a bummer because when spending this much on headphones you would want a case to truly protect them from everyday mishaps. Beneath the box is the one button standard 3.5 to 2.5mm auxiliary that can allow the Elite 700 to be used passively in case the battery dies. Next up is the micro USB cable to charge and/or sync the Elite 700 to a computer to update the firmware. Lastly, we have the warranty and quick start guide documentation.
The comfort here is excellent for the most part with super plush ear pads that uniquely contour to the back of the ear by raising up slightly. Ear pad diameter opening is also adequate; however, the headband seems to distribute the rather heavier than average weight of the Elite 700 to small area on the top of the head causing discomfort after prolonged periods of use.
On the bottom right ear cup you can find the 3.5mm input jack, the micro USB charge and sync port, as well as the built-in microphone. Turn it over and you will find the power button located on the top and the smart button, which can either toggle on and off ANC or the three levels of awareness mode located on the bottom. Moving over to the left ear cup reveals the volume up button, the play/pause, answer/hang-up phone calls and voice assistant button and the volume down button.
The Elite 700 has a companion app, which can be downloaded free from the App store or Google Play store. Functionality is nice and the way to execute is straightforward and intuitive. You can quickly toggle on and off the ANC as well as configure if you want the awareness modes to activate reversing the mics to let you hear what is going on around you. It can be adjusted for ear independently or in a preset category of low, medium or high or off. You can adjust the frequencies in this EQ area by either selecting from a preset or customizing your own. Moving back, you can disable or enable the auto off feature when there is no music playing or voice prompts and configure what the smart button on the Elite 700 will trigger. Lastly, you can activate TruNote, which measures the acoustical space between the eardrum, and the speaker to ensure the response is optimal to minimize any unwanted resonance and distortions
I am just going to get straight to the point and say it. The Elite 700 is as of today my favorite overall headphone and I never expected them to be. I was merely curious from seeing their kiosk in BestBuy and having respect for JBL as a brand to care what these have to offer as well as I figured “hey, I have a 30-day return window, what’s there to lose?” Well, these are the first Bluetooth headphones I have owned that did not make me immediately want to plug them in to hear them at their full potential. The wireless mode alone is simply excellent. The ANC does take a hit to the sound primarily in the sense of space and dynamics and resolution, but it is more than listenable and when in a noisy environment is absolutely heaven. The ANC ability of the Elite 700 is roughly close to the QC25, but not quite there. With ANC off, these sound great. Because these have a companion app to allow adjustments to the tonal balance, I really cannot say how they sound in terms of a frequency response, but in stock, they sound very neutral with a slight tilt to being warm, very slight. I will just describe the characteristics of each frequency and to start it off, the bass is tight, quick and can deliver a healthy amount of sub bass. It does run out of steam and distort when the sub bass is pushed to high levels that my V-MODA Crossfade Wireless can handle with ease, but overall the Elite 700 has a tighter and slightly more textured bass than the Crossfade Wireless. The Elite 700 conveys a midrange that is open, clean, articulated and offers a nice depth to the point where sometimes I truly cannot believe I am using a wireless headphone. No wireless headphones that I have tried has delivered this level of detail and clarity, none. Treble once again is clean and if I had to nitpick, it is not as clean and refined as say my best portables in this regard such as the Bowers & Wilkins P7 or Fidelio L2. For a wireless headphone, this is honestly quite amazing. When the Elite 700 is wired, they improve slightly immediately ranking them up there with the best portables I have heard in terms of resolution and clarity. From the stellar 15-23 hour battery life, to the nicely designed companion app to give me the ability to tune the sound the way I want to hear the music down to what seems like an exceptional design in acoustical engineering has rocketed these unsuspected headphones to the top of my recommendation list.

Stunning look, good sound.

These are basically gold colored Beats Studio Wireless and Pill 2.0's. Performance wise, nothing has changed. They're just finished in a high gloss champagne gold finish which looks amazing in person. Just a quick rundown of the sound for these products is as follows... The bass is not as elevated as I was lead to believe. They're very well presented in terms of quantity and good in terms of quality. When the volume is pushed hard, they quickly begin to distort thanks to the ANC. Oh yea, the noise cancelling is quite decent on these, but compared to my Bose QC25 there is absolutely no comparison. The QC25 makes me feel like I instantly went deaf. The midrange on the studios is present but a tad bit hollow sounding, nonetheless itis still on the warmer side of the spectrum with a good rendition of the naturalism of the fundamental tone. Clarity is there and everything sounds relatively coherent. Treble is a bit elevated to increase the sense of perceived clarity, but it isn't overbearing so and the overall tuning is energetic and well geared towards modern day music. These will be wonderful for those who crave bass driven music, but they still keep their composure when fed more demanding instrumental music.
The new studios simply are much more improved from the original studios released in 2008. The sound is more balanced and refined and the overall design and comfort is more streamlined and sleeker. Of course, most of know, for the price, there are much better sounding headphones than Beats that cost less or in the same price bracket or of course the ones that cost more. But, these are among the better sounding bluetooth headphones that I have experienced. However, to back up Beats I'd go along and say these offer on all aspects that most headphones fall short on. All aspects are sound, comfort, style, simplicity, efficiency, branding (to some), etc... So while there are headphones that excel over Beats in sound alone, they usually always fail miserably in another category consumers may value...

Is it really... Perfection?

The Sennheiser HD800 is a headphone that exceeded the standard of personal music reproduction at the time of its release back in 2009. And ‘till this day is still considered and is well regarded as one of the best headphones in the world. Senneheiser’s goal when creating this masterpiece was to eliminate compromise and re-invent the core foundation of the headphone listening experience. What a mighty expectation to set and what a courageous task to achieve.
The HD800’s comes stored in a finely crafted cardboard material box with a luxurious velvety felt that cushions the HD800’s inside. Immediately, the presentation given here is that you are dealing with something of epic proportions. There are documentations also included essentially describing the HD800’s technical abilities and the engineering process in detail kind of making you feel even more enthralled and enthusiastic about your new investment.
The HD800’s physical aesthetics are very futuristic and sci-fi and are more designed to showcase its technical ability as opposed to being purely stylish. This is a headphone that entirely favors function over form. The massive ear cups pivot and swivel to accommodate the subtle angles on the head to achieve that perfect fit. The HD800’s ear cups offer the most room that I have personally encountered from any headphone with not only a wide diameter to completely go around the ear, but incredible depth and distance from the speaker. The ear pads are supple, and feel soothing on the skin. Sennheiser calls the material alcantara which is also found in the interior of high end sports cars. The headband frame has been precisely crafted to minimize any vibration distortion caused by the speakers which can channel thru the headband interrupting the equilibrium of the opposing speaker.
The HD800’s speaker design and the fundamental properties surrounding it are entirely unique. From the steel mesh acoustical transparent filters to the exposed and ventilated rear magnet structure, these design cues point towards Sennheiser’s goal to achieve no compromise.
The sound of the HD800’s have been loved and hated, but there’s no denying the surreal sense of clarity and resolution in the presentation, the microscopic detail retrieval capability and the pin-point accurate imaging separation and projection of this headphone. The sounds that emit from the HD800 sound as if they simply appear out of nowhere and you can reach out touch it. However with all of this clarity and detail comes a flaw. A flaw that may not even be a fault of the HD800, but a fault of our human intellect. A fault that may just well be reality. Simply put, the HD800’s are very analytical.
Bass presentation here is stellar with impeccable levels of control and refinement that simple just allows the subtle textures to just flow off into the ambience unaltered by its neighboring notes. This is only bested by my planar magnetics terms of the sense of authority behind the notes while maintaining precision. The HD800’s bass is simply exquisite and is easily the best presentation of bass that I have heard from a dynamic driver.
Holographic and illusive in its presentation is the midrange response. A vocalist can be rendered with such precision and spatial position that it quite quickly becomes an illusion rather than listening to music. An illusion that they’re actually there, in your room but you cannot see nor touch them. The level of fundamental and spatial detail is astonishing and just allows the core of the music to easily and I mean easily be deciphered and analyzed to your heart’s content. Nothing will make the HD800’s trip over itself and render an even slightly confused passage of the most complex song you can find.
The treble is where either what you may want to call a flaw or the basic principles of our human perception coming into play. The HD800’s in terms of measurements are simply unmatched overall. Looking at the frequency response does show a very present, but not necessarily overly emphasized treble response in relation to the midrange and bass. What must be understood is that a treble response that is linear on paper will not sound like so in reality. The HD800’s treble is accurate, but not natural. Accurate in that it is insanely detailed and resolving and helps power the immensely open and wide soundstage that recreates everything in a 3D venue with laser positioning that just redefines what listening to headphones is all about. However, not natural in that it is a bit too much and emphasizes any flaw in the recording and gives a cold rendition of the music if it’s not optimally mastered.
Thankfully, I know the power of an equalizer and with that applied to slightly reduce some of the energy in the treble, I have pretty much found audio nirvana.

Sennheiser sound on the go...

The Sennheiser Momentum is a product series whose goal is to merge the two most difficult attributes in modern day headphones, style and sonic performance. Here before you is the refinement of the original Momentum that started it all, the Momentum 2.
The Momentum 2's packaging is typical of Sennheiser and immediately showcases quality and first class workmanship. Upon removal of the lid, the much reduced in size case is first apparent. The cable is mostly similar to the first iteration but no longer does it have the steel constructed in-line microphone and controls. You then get your typical quick start guide and Sennheiser's 2 year warranty registration booklet. Here is where the Momentum 2 simply outclasses nearly all headphones immediately. Not only do you get a protective zipper case, you also get a pouch. Nowadays the trend for such expensive headphones is to only include a pouch which is a slap in the face for such a costly investment. To even go further, Sennheiser includes foam to help keep the integrity of the pads composure while folded up. Now that's what I call quality packaging. And yea, folding, the new Momentum's can now fold which is nothing new in this day and age, but hey better late than never.
The Sennheiser Momentum is simply gorgeous to look at. It's a very simple design at heart, but it's so well executed and tastefully down from the stainless steel arched headband, the glistening holographic Sennheiser logo and the stitched leather on the top of the headband. The ear pads are entirely redesigned and are soft to the touch. Finally, these can be safely called over the ear headphones thanks to the much larger in diameter opening of the pads in comparison to the previous iteration of the Momentum. The headband is essentially the same and maintains that fashionable low profile design that keeps the uniformity of the arch close to the head and reduces the bulge effect of larger headphones. Here we see steel reinforced folding mechanism that grants the Momentum 2 the ability to collapse down upon itself for storage. This should fare much better than something from the Beats Studio or Solo series with their plastic construction.
The beautiful sculpted sound signature that I lusted over in the previous Momentum is thankfully unharmed. There's something about the level of refinement and soothing spark to the attack of the Momentum signature that is all too addictive. It's a very forgiving sound that still showcases the refinement that Sennheiser is all too well known for.
The bass is very linear from 20hz to 250hz creating this sense of ease to the presentation. Immediately apparent over the previous iteration is the tighter control of the attack and the more precise rendition of decay resulting in one of the best bass performances that I have heard, period. It doesn't quite reach that last bit of laser tight composure of my planar magnetics like the Hifiman HE560, but boy does it deliver a dynamic slam when the music calls for it. Integration into the midrange is seamless like with the previous Momentum, but now due to the quicker pace the bass to midrange bleed that occurred when the bass became too complex in the recording that sometimes flawed the original momentum's has vanished.
The midrange presentation is sonic gold. Sennhesier just simply knows the foundation of the music and the tonal balance required to reproduce all of the information recreating a true to life experience. Vocals, guitars, pianos or whatever instrument lies in this frequency all have this robust composure that remains grain less and endlessly smooth with incredible low levels of harsh transient that also induces vocal sibilance. Overall, the midrange is quite linear with a slow descending slope into the lower treble which highlights the lower midrange and restores the natural heft in the sounds in that region. The level of detail rendition is also simply stunning maybe due to the heightened level of treble over the first Momentum or just a superior transducer at work.
The treble is very articulated, but most importantly more in-line with the music in terms of emphasis. The first Momentum simple was too subdued here and resulted a closed in soundstage that reduced the sense of speed and clarity of the music. The Momentum 2 raises the treble just enough to revive the harmonic decay in the upper stratosphere, but not cause them to be too bright for their intended use. This welcoming improvement in the rendition of the treble music grants the Momentum 2 one of the biggest soundstage performances that I have yet to hear from a portable headphone. The stage is larger in width than it is depth, but it's very satisfying to hear.
In summary, Sennheiser has listened to the feedback from its consumers and reconstructed the Momentum both physically and acoustically to better adhere to their goal, uncompromising mobile performance.

Blingtastic audio!

First of all, these things look incredibly epic in real life. Pictures don't do them justice. I was expecting them to look cheap because it is plastic with shiny gold paint on it. Boy was I wrong, they look like they are made of actual gold. As a result of this convincing appearance be aware where you wear this when going outside.
Comfort and build wise they are quite tough and rugged, but still plastic. They're not as indestructible feeling as a pair of V-Moda M-100's or Beats Pros or some predominantly metal headphones. They're very comfortable thanks to their giant ear pads that conform to the ear once they warm up. Also, due to their plastic design, they're light and don't wear down at the top of the head.
Sound quality wise they're quite clear, spacious and clean. However, for my taste, the bass is too heavy being that I'm an audiophile and own countless headphones even some costing $1,000. After a bit of EQ to tame the bass, these sound quite good and easily better than the Beats Pro and all of the other Beats I've heard once they're EQ'd as well. To the demographic these are targeted to, the sound signature will please them in their stock form.
Overall, these are really a nice pair of headphones. One of the best looking pieces of technology I've seen while still offering functionality and not being purely form. I recommend them!
