Well rounded solution for a variety of uses
on July 28, 2016
Posted by: Keyan
This monitor is a good solution for someone who enjoys different types of games, but also wants an excellent monitor for desktop applications, video, and photos. Some monitors have faster refresh rates or response times, but many of them use a TN panel instead of an IPS panel. TN panels are known for their ability to get a deeper black than an IPS (which have what is known as IPS glow, a faint backlight bleed through due to the physical design of the panel) and their ultra fast response times and high refresh rates. They have drawbacks in color accuracy and the vibrance of colors, as well as viewing angles. That makes a TN panel a better possible solution for very dedicated first-person shooter players who value every frame their video card can make. For many users, a monitor that functions well for several different applications makes more sense, and this is where an IPS panel such as this one shines.
This display does have some gamer-centric features, such as multiple input options, a crosshair overlay, FPS counters, and timers. It also supports AMD's freesync technology which aligns the screen refresh with the final rendered frame from the video card. I'm a little disappointed this display doesn't support Nvidia's G-sync technology as I am driving this monitor with a GTX 1080, but it's also not a deal breaker feature for me as I'm not fretting over getting every single frame out of my video card. If I were, I would have chosen a high refresh lower resolution display, such as one of the Full HD 144hz TN panels. It also has easy access to several presets that are defined for various game types.
The menu system is easy to use, with a small joystick type controller and several dedicated feature buttons around the back right side of the display. The buttons alternate in a triangular shape, which makes it easier to know where you are when sliding your finger down between them when controlling the display. The stand also very flexible, with integrated height, tilt, and rotation to fit a variety of people and situations. It also has integrated cable management for a clean look.
The picture quality on the display is great. Text in 4k at this PPI density is sharp and edges are perfectly rounded. Pictures and video really pop at 4K on an IPS panel. It's great for digital photography work as you can see so many more pixels off of a high megapixel DSLR, it's like looking through a window into your photograph. Another perk for photo/video editing is that it has a preset for sRGB, which is very accurate out of the box for working with photos that will be going to print.
In games with rich color pallets, such as RPGs, the IPS panel also shines with vibrant and dynamic colors that really immerse you in the game. I noticed no tracing or other signs of slow pixel responses on the display. The matte anti-glare finish on this display worked very well in my sometimes challenging den to minimize reflections.
Overall color uniformity is very good as expected from a modern IPS panel, and I only noticed a slight variance in brightness on the bottom corners when looking at the center of the display (if you move your head to be level with the corner the variance goes away), which is expected with an edge lit IPS panel, and is much better than others I have seen. Under normal usage conditions (not solid gray screens) it's not noticeable at all. All pixels on this display appear to be working, I wasn't able to see any dead or stuck on pixels or subpixels on the display, which is very good for a 4k high density panel.
Overall, this display is a great choice for a multi-role monitor that will serve for gaming, photos, videos, and normal desktop tasks such as web browsing and document editing. It does everything most users will need very well.

Works great with a GTX 1080
on June 20, 2016
Posted by: Keyan
This is a great option for boosting performance on Alienware systems with a compatible port. The GTX 1080 FE fits right in and works great with the latest mobile drivers installed from NVIDIA. Huge performance boost in games and it keeps the GPU heat out of your system, which should extend the life of the components and lowers fan noise from the laptop to only the CPU fan. It also adds 4 USB ports, so it is a kind of docking station. If you know that you are always going to have the cable connected when at your main work space, the hub can be useful for external hard drives and such to reduce desk cable clutter. The unit is very big - with the rather inflexible cable in the back it probably takes up at least 18" of depth and certainly makes a statement on a desk. I was able to hide it down in a desk cubby, but for many you need to realize it is going to be a substantial part of the look of your space. It does have one of the light up Alienware heads on it that has a full channel LED allowing for it to be controlled by the AlienFX software that also manages the laptop lights, or can be shut off too. One last quirk - with it connected the sleep and hibernate functions won't work anymore. All you can do is shut down or restart the PC.

Dizzying
on June 20, 2016

I just paired this with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier for my Alienware laptop, and it is absolutely insane. This card fits perfectly and runs great. Running Fallout 4 with everything set to the max at 60 fps 1080p (limited by vsync to monitor refresh rate) no matter what is going on in the scene. Works great, runs quiet, the boost on this card is nuts, when idle in the AGA it is running at something around 130mhz, but when a game comes on it jumps to 1800+. Since the AGA is just the card, a front fan, and the power supply, it runs cool and quiet. Overall this card is amazing and the price point is very aggressive for a card of this performance level.

Best back shield I have owned...but expensive
on April 11, 2016
Posted by: Keyan
As a long time user of third party back shields on iPads this is by far the best one I have owned as Apple has finally joined in on making a first party one, and it should be for the crazy price Apple is asking. This combined with the Smart Cover is $120 for basic bump, scuff, and scratch protection. It is well constructed and fits the iPad perfectly. The inside is lined with felt and the outside has a nice feeling if somewhat slippery silicone finish. It also has the benefit of being just s little thicker than the camera bump, protecting that from being banged and dragged across things. It has a black ring around the camera opening which should limit odd reflections from coming into the camera causing unexpected lens flares.
Overall it is a really nice cover...but the price is very high for what you get.

The Smart Cover for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is constructed from a single piece of polyurethane to protect the front of your device. The Smart Cover automatically wakes your iPad when opened and puts it to sleep when closed. It folds into different positions to create a stand for reading, typing, or watching videos. And it’s easy to remove, so you can snap it on and off whenever you want.

It's a Smart Cover...
on April 11, 2016
Posted by: Keyan
It does exactly what you would expect it to. As some others have mentioned it slightly overlaps the edges of the Pro - this is by design as Apple seems to assume you are going to also get the silicone back cover. With the back cover it fits perfectly to form a complete cover for the iPad Pro. One nice change in this generation is that the Smart Cover will magnically lock to the back of the iPad when it is folded open - although I don't like that my hands are against the felt the entire time it is flipped open as it will probably get dirty over time. I usually just pull it off when I am using the iPad and want it out of the way. The cover has a nice feel that matches the back shield cover. Overall it is exactly what you would expect. It and the back shield add up to a ridiculous price though, coming in at about $110 for little more than scratch protection.

Excellent next-generation capable router
on March 21, 2016
Posted by: Keyan
The Asus AC3100 is a great router for home or small office use. As with most Asus products, the router has a ton of features and the coverage is really good. Due to the location of the den in my house I have the router in a far corner, which is not the ideal placement, but this router provides solid coverage for the entire house. Performance on both the 2.4 and 5ghz bands is good, and wired performance is also very fast.
This router also has a number of security features beyond the typical password - it can automatically block bad sites, and it can also watch your internal hosts for signs that they have been compromised by malware and block them from sending information to command and control servers on the internet. In addition, it has a number of parental control features for limiting content that devices on your network can get to - this is very granular and you can assign different rules to different devices, so you can block the kid's tablets while maintaining your own access. You can also control the time of day the internet is available for a given device. It also has an application traffic analyzer to tell you what applications are going over your network and how much they are using. It can also go full big brother and allow you to monitor site usage and even mirror the traffic that is going through the router to one of the wired ports to then put into a packet "sniffer". Overall, these are features that are generally found on enterprise class devices, available for your home. The options can get a bit overwhelming if you don't understand what they do, but fortunately the router has a security guide that can walk you through turning on the key protections to help keep your home network secure.
If you are into gaming, the router can also do some quality of service functions to prioritize gaming traffic on your network, of course when it hits the Internet it's back to a free-for-all, but at least the kid's netflix won't squash your online multiplayer on your home network.
This router can also do some AC Wave 2 features, such as Multi-User MIMO, which allows for up to 4 devices to communicate simultaneously on the wireless network. As of the time of this review the MIMO-MU firmware was still in alpha release and I don't have any MU devices to test it, but at least it has some future-proofing capability in the radios as long as ASUS keeps up the firmware releases on it.
This router is very big - with the antenna on it it's nearly a foot wide - but that also helps dissipate the heat and provides a wider antenna array for beam forming. One odd thing is that the USB 3.0 port is on the front of the device - handy for accessing for portable drives, but if you are planning to use a large external hard drive you will have to wire it rather oddly to plug it into the front of the device. The back has a USB 2.0 port, but that is much slower. In my case I use a gigabit hard wired NAS. On that note - you can aggregate the first two network ports into a 2 gigabit etherchannel if you have a wired NAS with port aggregation capabilities.
The router is also very futuristic looking with a series of hard angles. I do like that you can push a button on the front to turn off the LEDs. Just note that it will take up a chunk of desk real estate and has a rather distinctive look while doing so.
Overall, this is one of the best home routers on the market today and I highly recommend it for advanced home users and those with larger spaces that need solid coverage.

Perfection
on October 27, 2015
Posted by: Keyan
The Xbox already has one of the most well designed controllers out there, and this one refines it to perfection. Everything about this exudes quality, from the high end packaging, to the case, to the controller itself. It is a joy to hold and you immediately get a feeling of quality and fit and finish that is unparalleled in Xbox controllers. All of the interchangeable parts lock in magnetically, no friction tension parts to wear out, no wondering if it is going in the right way, they just lock into place and are secure but easy to remove when you want to customize the controller. The long throw sticks are perfect for driving games or other precision uses, and the two profiles allow for on the fly switching of sensitivity, a great feature for running around and then switching to a lower sensitivity mode for careful aiming. The mappable under paddles mean you can map buttons that would normally take your thumbs off of the sticks to your other fingers. The hair trigger locks are great, I tend to set the right one for hair trigger and the other for long throw for aiming.
I also like that this controller, like all of the other Xbox controllers, just uses two AA batteries. Sealed in batteries means that you can't just swap in new ones and keep going - and when they eventually wear out, it means a new controller. I use high capacity rechargeable batteries in mine. It also comes with a nice long braided USB cable if you need to use it wired.
This controller allowes for you to customize it exactly to your gaming style and it is the ultimate Xbox controller. Recommended for gamers who are looking for the very best and are willing to pay the price for this controller.

Works well, one thing to note
on August 2, 2015
Posted by: Keyan
These enclosures do what they are supposed to do. Transfer speeds are very good over USB3, basically as fast as having the drive internal. The metal cases allow heat from the drives to dissapate. The metal cases are my one concern though - if you have them sitting on edge as they are designed to go on a hard surface like a desk there is a LOT of sound transfer. I have them in a shelf and the amount of noise transfer was enough to be distracting. You can hear the drives humming and they rattle and clatter when the drives are going. Fortunately the fix was simple, I just cut a piece of rubber shelf liner and put it under them and now they are as quiet as I would expect them to be. That would be the one improvement I would make, rubber feet on the bottom of the cause would avoid this issue entirely.

Powerful Mobile PC
on July 27, 2015
Posted by: Keyan
This laptop is a beast of a machine. It's no ultrabook - this is a machine built for performance and it is thicker and heavier than your typical laptop. Depending on your use case, the tradeoff is more than worth it. For me, it was finally time to replace my 6 year old custom built desktop. My life now isn't as conducive to sitting for long hours in front of a desktop and I was finding that I didn't get much use out of my PC because of it. This laptop can replace all but high end dedicated gaming desktops with ease. It has a well sized SSD for boot and for you to use for other apps you want to load quickly - the 256gb size is good for this type of use. It also has a 1TB spinning HDD. 1TB is pretty typical for most laptops with spinning HDDs in laptops, but this one spins at 7200 rpm, making it a higher performance drive like a desktop would typically have.
The CPU is also more similar to a desktop than a typical laptop. Most laptops that have Core i7 processors have slower speed CPUs that are only a dual core with the ability to run two threads for "4-way processing". This laptop has a true quad core i7 with dual threads for "8-way processing". It can also ramp up to a higher speed and has a larger local cache, which allows the CPU to fetch commonly used data more quickly. The 16gb of RAM is enough to easily run the most demanding applications.
The graphics on the laptop are impressive. The GTX 970M can run most games very well, and if you really need full desktop class graphics this laptop can be hooked to the Alienware graphics accelerator which allows for a desktop graphics card to render graphics. The 970M has 3 gig of GDDR5 and can also support CUDA acceleration for highly parallel non-graphics applications, such as photo and video editing. Many of the step down tier of laptops I looked at that have discrete graphics processors and dedicated memory only use DDR3, which is much slower for graphics applications.
A final note on the graphics - the display on this laptop is amazing. At a higher resolution than a Macbook Pro it is crystal clear with great color and contrast, and it has touch support.
The audio on this laptop is also very good with a Creative Sound Blaster audio controller. This does lead me to my one major concern - the first copy of this laptop I received had a defective headphone jack. After going through support it was determined that it was physically defective and the entire motherboard would have to be replaced. I decided instead to just exchange it for a new one through Best Buy. Moral of the story - always check all ports for proper functionality even if it isn't a port you are going to use often. The second copy works flawlessly and the audio is crisp without any background hiss or other noises from the system bus, as you would expect from a Creative audio controller.
The laptop came loaded with minimal additional software on it, it comes with software to create recovery media and do some data backup and to control the case LEDs and custom keys.
One final note - for all of its size this laptop does not contain an optical drive.
Overall, this is a very powerful and feature packed high end laptop that can replace all but the most powerful desktops and you can take it places. The graphics and display, along with both SSD and spinning hard drives, are the major standout features of this laptop. The only caution is the quality control - make sure that all of the ports are working before your return period is up or else you may be shipping it off to Dell (Alienware) for repair.

Phone ruined.
on June 3, 2015
Posted by: Keyan
I don't write many negative reviews but this case has a major design flaw that renders the waterproof design useless if it failes. This flaw meant my phone got ruined. Waterproof doors should always have a secondary locking mechanism to prevent accidental opening when being used in the water. At some point, despite periodic checks by me, the door came open in my pocket and water got in and killed my phone. It was never even submerged for longer than a minute but it is completely dead now. I should have recognized this before trusting the case with my phone, but I trusted the design and the claims of waterproofing to mean the door would stay put. An expensive lesson.
A simple change to the door to incorporate a sliding lock to prevent the door from being caught by a pocket lining or anything else and coming open would prevent this from happening. It is extremely disappointing that after going through all of the waterproofing checks outlined in the manual and feeling confident in the case to keep my phone protected during some brief use in water that it failed and as a result my phone was destroyed.
Other than that the case is fine, I found the screen cover to decrease accuracy and responsiveness somewhat but not enough to to make the phone unuseable.

$30 for a piece of plastic that broke.
By CmdrJones from New York, NY
Bought this in October when I bought my iPad.
It developed a crack within a few days, apparently because it installed and removed it a couple of times when I was applying a screen protector.
The other day it developed another crack that left a piece of plastic sticking out by the volume control. It's completely useless.
Emailed Belkin, they said I had to call, so I called. Spent 34 minutes on the phone and discovered they wouldn't replace it without a receipt.
I pointed out that I could send the thing to them (how would I have gotten it, right?) but, no.
Have to say I didn't expect a protective case to break, silly me.
So, the design or materials used thing are defective and I'm out $30.
No more Belkin products for me.

If you bought it from Best Buy they should be able to reprint your receipt, or you can get it from your reward zone/my BestBuy history if you have an account.

Should've been a Day 1 edition...
By kjk91
I like that it has a 1TB SSHD and comes with the new elite controller, but this really should've been a Day 1 edition for the next gen consoles. ESPECIALLY since with the xbox one you have to download all games onto the console even with a disk format compared to a direct purchase from the xbox store. I've had to uninstall and reinstall games over and over just to play a game that I want to because I have about 4-5 core games that I keep on there that I play regularly. 500GB HD on a next gen console is frustrating especially when we had it on the xbox 360.
Overall, I am thinking of getting this if only for the extra hard drive space to store games. If I can't trade in my old xbox one, I may be waiting to get this until the price drops and just dropping $100 on an external hard drive.
In regards to your space concerns
October 6, 2015
You know that you can just plug in an external HDD to your xbox one and store games and apps there, right? Just go get a portable external HDD, plug it into the back, and tuck it away behind your xbox and store your games on that.

I think this should of been day one edition .. This is good for people that are just getting a xbox one but also for hard core gamers for just the elite controller . New focus since Day One
October 6, 2015
The focus of the Xbox team prior to the launch of the XBO was as a media hub of which gaming was just one function. Unfortunately they miscalculated the effect that focus would have on their most vocal and dedicated fans. Since then they have rededicated their focus to gamers and gear heads who appreciate the options of a hybrid SSD and the elite controller. It's actually pretty remarkable what they have done in 2 years in terms of feature enhancements to the console and this new line of Elite console versions and accessories that are focused on the gaming community.

This controller allowes for you to customize it exactly to your gaming style and it is the ultimate Xbox controller. Recommended for gamers who are looking for the very best and are willing to pay the price for this controller.
No I wasn't paid
October 29, 2015
Oh no, someone likes something on the Internet, they must be paid for it! No, I spent my own money on the controller and am just that impressed by it.
I did realize after posting that I didn't say anything negative and I was waiting for a comment like this to come along. If I had one negative it is the soft touch finish on the controller. It makes it feel great in the hands but it shows fingerprints if there is any oil at all on your hands, so it will need a wipe down with a microfiber cloth to keep the oils from breaking down the finish and to keep it from looking nasty.

Works but 3.5 HD is not very snug.

The speed is great but the drive sits in the case pretty loosely.
Agreed

I found this too. I've had this with other enclosures by other manufacturers too, the solution I have found is to go to a hardware store and get a package of the "extreme" all weather heavy duty Velcro, cut a couple of small pads out of the "soft or fuzzy" side of the velcro, and stick them to the far end of the HDD that goes into the enclosure (over the platter area if you know where that is) - do not stick it to any exposed circuit boards or directly over the motor in the center of the platter area of the drive. That will act as both a sound dampener and it will fit in there very snugly. Makes the enclosure quieter and the drive won't rattle around.

By Keyan
Slight correction

It's closer to $120 for both covers....

Can only do what the source can output
July 29, 2016
A 4K monitor, just like a 4K TV, can only run at the resolution the source device can output and is also potentially limited by the cables used between the devices. An Xbox cannot output 4K yet - only the Xbox One S will be able to output at 4k, and it will require that any devices between the TV and the Xbox (such has a receiver) support 4K, along with the cables between components.
As someone who owns this monitor, I can tell you that it supports 4K just fine, and performs very well.

Love it.
By solat152
Its great. Setup was easy. I have a 1070 in it right now. The 1070 will play just about anything at 1080p with ultra settings. Don't use the amp as a docking station or you will hinder performance in games. Looking at youtube videos you can expect to attain about 70 to 85 percent of the cards power. Still its better than the 970m or 980m. The locking mechanism is really bad though. Hard to open and when you do it makes a sound like you broke it.
Why no docking station
August 1, 2016
Looking at the riser card and how this registers to the system, I'm pretty sure the USB portions of the Amp have dedicated conductors in the cable, meaning they will be on a separate path from the 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes that feed the graphics card. It shouldn't make any difference in game performance at all. What source did you find that indicates otherwise?

Asus AC 3100 Black vs AC3100 88U

Whats the difference between the two? besides the color of the antenas? I've read the 88U was designed for gamers and has 1024-QAM technology... would the 3100 black also match the hardware? or as a gamer, should I buy the 88U. Thanks
The biggest difference is that the 88U has an 8 port switch in it and supposedly some kind of additional gaming optimizer - not sure what though as the 3100 also has gaming quality of service features. Honestly those are mostly marketing fluff anyway - your latency is going to come once the traffic hits the internet, not on your internal network, unless you are truly bottlenecked by your home internet connection speeds and need to prioritize gaming traffic over streaming video and such. The radios and processors are identical between the two. Personally the extra ports and added cost just aren't for me - and this thing is already big enough and unique enough looking without red highlights on the antennas.

Anybody else having disconnect problems?

My 5G wifi connections are always fast and stable but for some reason regular N connection keeps disconnecting then connects every 10 minutes about. Anyone else having that problem?
Update the firmware, it helps. I have also noticed some disconnects with an older laptop, but things like ipads and such seem to be stable on the 2.4ghz band. I think it has to do with the drivers on the older laptop in my case. You can try limiting the channel width on your 2.4ghz band to just 20mhz, it's slower but so is 2.4 anyway. Limiting the channel width can help with older devices and narrows the chance of interference causing a device to disconnect.

How much is monthly bill ?

There is no monthly bill. You do have to have your own service provider to provide internet services to the router though, which will likely have a fee based on the providers in your area and the one you choose.

How do you adjust the stand?

I couldn't budge the one in store.
Just use the top of the display for leverage. It takes some force, which is a good thing since you don't want it shifting when using it as a touch screen.

How do I stream netflix on my iPad through apple tv?

The Apple TV has its own netflix app, you don't need to use the iPad. In fact, there is no way to use the iPad to stream Netflix to an Apple TV since you would never need to. Just register your Netflix account in the Apple TV and it will access your queue etc.

Can you use a wireless or bluetooth keyboard with AppleTV

I would like to use some sort of keyboard for data entry and websurfing. Is this possible
No. It does not have a web browser in it, so you cannot use it for web surfing anyway. There is very little data entry to do, about the only time you need a keyboard is when putting in a wireless passcode or searching for a movie. You can use the Remote app from Apple on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, which will bring up the keyboard on that device when you are in a text field on the Apple TV.

Can you search and view the web using Apple TV like a regular browser?

No, it does not have any web browser functionality. It is basically designed to stream your iTunes library from your computer, rent movies, and access a few streaming services like Netflix.
