Excellent Next Generation Cooker
on October 31, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
In the world of cooking trends one of the most popular today is immersion, or Sous Vide cooking. Immersion cooking works by circulating hot water around food sealed in bags with as much air as possible forced out of the bags. This allows for food to be cooked at a lower temperature for a longer period, trapping juices and other flavoring in the food and allowing for every even cooking. Instead of overcooking the outside of the meat to the get the middle done, immersion cooking gently warms the entire piece to one uniform temperature. Meats cooked this way are often then finished by quickly searing on a hot skillet or grill to get the look, flavor, and texture that most people find appealing.
Anova has emerged as one of the leaders in the area of Sous Vide cooking with an excellent set of first generation products that appealed to different levels of users. The new Anova Precision Cooker is the next generation of cookers from Anova and sits in the middle of their product offerings between the nano and the pro. This device has more power than the previous generation – up 100 watts to 1000 and moves 8 liters of water per minute. It is also noticeably smaller. Not quite as compact as the nano, but offers more power, more water flow, a stainless steel skirt, and WiFi connectivity. It is also waterproof against splashes, which is important when dealing with pots of water.
Anova cookers, unlike some others, have manual touch controls with a display or app control. The display shows things such as the current temp, remaining cook time, and other details. Personally, I like this over requiring an app and a smart phone to work. As a WiFi attached device, it does have app control that can be run from anywhere, even if you are away from the house or out of range of Bluetooth. The app offers control over the cooker as well as a large selection of crowd-sourced recipes. For testing, I tried the basic bone-in skin on chicken breast with the middle option for doneness (150.1 degrees for 1 hour). When selected, the app will automatically send the target temp and time to the cooker and away it goes! The chicken was seasoned with salt and pepper and placed into ziplock bags. I used the water displacement method to get the air out – just leave one corner of the bag open and submerge the rest, working the air out of the bag before sealing it just above the water line. Be sure to do this in a different pot or before preheating the water! It heats up water pretty quickly and then holds it to that .1 or so degree of variation. One thing to note – this model does make more noise than the nano or some other brands. Many cookers sound like an aquarium pump, but this unit makes a bit of a higher pitched motor noise. With the higher water volume motor and smaller size, the motor has to move faster, and this changes the pitch and noise level a bit. It’s not terrible and blends into the background in a busy kitchen, but if you hear a bit more motor buzz that is expected for this model. I clipped the bags to the sides of the pot and it’s time to cook! After an hour in the hot water bath the chicken was done and the sear finish was done using a cast iron skillet and canola oil. The chicken was extremely juicy, the texture was good (not mushy or overly chewy) and the finish on the skin was crispy. The seasoning could have been heavier and it will take some trial and error to dial in the cooking/finishing method and the seasonings to taste.
Overall, this is a great product and has the power and features to please anyone who is looking for a next level up immersion cooker or to get started with cooking this way.

Good suite but not quite perfect
on October 21, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
Adobe’s latest consumer suite is here in one bundle for a discounted price for those who want to do both Photo and Video editing. Adobe is promising several new features for the hobbyist or digital scrapbooker, and in this review we’ll run through a few of them and see if they work as advertised.
First, a bit of background, I’m not a professional photographer or content producer, but I have been editing videos and photos for years using software such as Lightroom and video editors from some other companies, so I know my way around exposure and editing suites. I have cameras beyond a cell phone to test a variety of photo types and video formats with this new Adobe Suite.
My PC is a Core i7 9700 with 16gb RAM and a GTX 1080 and all solid state drives, it’s not a slow machine and we’ll see how the new suite performs as we dig through it.
One thing that strikes as soon as you install one of the two products, either Photoshop Elements (PSE) or Premier Elements (PE) is that when starting either app you are presented with a launcher page with suggestions, tips, and guides on how to use the tools. This is a nice way to show new users (or returning users) how to get the most out of the new features in the suite. The only caveat here is that if you didn’t buy both products, you might see things that will be for PSE or PE and not for the product you own…another advantage of the bundle.
First we’ll take a look at Photoshop Elements 2020. Adobe is claiming several new features, such as automatic subject selection that then allows for things like background replacement, adding depth of field blur, and other nifty effects. It also has a number of automatic and manually tunable corrections, along with effects and several filters.
The guided modes are really useful for new users, and some of the automatic corrections actually do a really decent job. For example, in two clicks I took a picture that had a washed out bluish tone and made it have proper colors and much better clarity, just using the automatic levels and remove haze options. (Before and after attached to the review)
Unfortunately, I found the automatic subject selection to be wildly inaccurate. This has always been the bane of photo editors and shows the one area that our human brains are still better than a machine – we can instantly tell what the subject of a photo is and where it ends, but the automatic tools here leave a lot to be desired. It frequently missed the mark and included areas well outside of the subject or would miss things like small gaps around arms, cut off ears, or the feathers of bird in flight against a monotone blue sky. Since this is a key feature that a lot of other effects need to work correctly, it brings down the entire suite that it doesn’t work very well.
One area that this suite really shines and has been an Adobe feature for a long time is the ability to “photoshop” an image and remove blemishes or unwanted elements from a photo..or even entire people. The spot healing brush is here in its full power, just brush over something you don’t want and it will usually completely vanish. If there is something it has more trouble with, the clone stamp tool is also available to help copy other samples from your photo (such as grass, sky, or skin) over the area you want to make disappear, and it will be gone.
This bundle also includes Premier Elements 2020, which is designed around video editing. The suite is pretty straightforward with some helpful guides and different modes for users of different skill levels. To really test it, I pulled out some really old, horribly grainy and underexposed video from over 10 years ago and let the auto enhancements and noise reduction go to work. They actually did a pretty good job of pulling up the details and reducing the grain and the end result was better than what was there before. I also tested it against modern 4k footage from a new camera and 2.7k 60fps footage from an action camera. Both resulted in clean and well produced video. Exporting is easy, with presets designed to match most of the desired output formats (4k, 1080p HD, etc)… But exporting is slow. Most of the rendering is software only, so while my CPU fan is cranked to full speed, my fancy GPU is sitting around doing nothing, which is sad. Some other effects, such as shake reduction, take an incredibly long time. Running shake reduction on a 2min 20 second 4k video at 30fps took over 40 minutes! The end result was kind of weird too, with almost wave like ripples in the video or sudden moments where it got very soft, even in parts of the video that weren’t shaky. Some other nifty features are the ability to reduce the fishbowl effect from action cameras and some powerful corrections for consumer software. It also has a good library of transitions for making those family montages to subject everyone to at Christmas.
Overall, this is a very capable suite for most hobbyist home users. A couple of misses around the subject auto selection in Photoshop Elements and some very slow effect and rending times in Premier elements keep it from a perfect score, but for users looking to do more with their photos and videos than can be done on a smart phone, this bundle is a good value that will provide a lot of useful tools.

Awesome Active
on August 14, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
The Jaybird Vista true wireless earbuds are a fantastic option for active users or people who want a compact set of earbuds that offer good battery life, excellent sound quality for their size, and a useful app for tweaking the equalizer.
Opening up the package reveals an almost impossibly small charging case with a handy lanyard tied to it. There is a small zip-lock bag with a USB C cable and 2 additional sizes of ear gels (one without the support wings, and one with larger wings) to fit in many sizes of ears. They are made of a soft and flexible silicone, and the medium size that was on the earbuds when they shipped worked fine for me. They are comfortable after a long wearing session and they don’t move at all when used for activities or just sitting. The small size also worked fine for less active use and is even more comfortable over time. Changing the gels was actually easy, just lever it off using the “wing” part, and put the next one on starting at the ear post and it actually snapped into place as it is fitted over the back. The gels sit at the entrance to your ear and seal off outside noise, but do NOT sit into your ear canal, which makes them much more comfortable. Another awesome feature is the level of dust and waterproofing on these. The IPX7 rating means they could be submerged in a meter of water for half an hour…practically this means that they are sealed from sweat, sand, dust, and rain getting in. You could rinse them off if they get really dirty and be just fine. I wouldn’t swim with them though as they aren’t earplugs.
After a quick charging of the case, I connected the headphones by opening the case, pushing the button, and connecting them in my phone’s Bluetooth settings. After this pairing process, just taking them out of the case turns them on and they connect to your device. Simple, no need to power up one bud, make sure it connects, then power on the other one, the order the buds are removed doesn’t matter and they just pair up to your device and go. You can also use either bud as a solo device, getting twice the battery life out of the pair and keeping one ear open to be more aware of surroundings. The magnetic connection to the charging case is Apple-quality “magical” here – just get the earbud near its spot in the case and the magnet guides it in for a firm connection to guarantee charging. No mushy connection or fiddling to make sure charging is happening.
Downloading the app is essential – there is a note on the case lanyard that a firmware update is required, and it seems pretty important to do the update to ensure proper operation. Remove the earbuds from the case so they power on and connect, fire up the app..it picked up right away that the buds needed to be updated and it was done. The app is also where the equalizer settings can be configured. Out of the box, they are set to “flat”…which is pretty flat. Jaybird has a set of EQs and also curates a list of other really good ones. You can either find one here that suits your taste or make your own. I found “Smooth” by Loud & Wireless to be a pretty solid EQ for my taste. The EQ is persistent even if not using the app. The app mercifully does not require you to create an account or give up any personal information unless you want to.
The sound quality from these is great and the connection is solid, even to my older Bluetooth 4.1 phone (the earbuds support up to 5.0). I have used them next to my wireless router and the connection stays strong. The press button controls could be a little better, what they do can be customized in the app, but pressing them means pushing pretty hard into your ear and if you don’t get the angle right it causes pressure in your ear canal. On one hand, it prevents accidental button presses when inserting or adjusting the earbud…but on the other it can be a little awkward to actually use. There is also no option for an outside sound pass-thru using the mics to carry sound from outside into the earbuds in the event you want to be more aware of what is going on. That feature probably takes more battery life, but it would be nice to have and other earbuds at this price point offer it as an option. Also the sound quality of the mics could be better – earbuds in general often have a hard time picking up a mouth that is far away, and the waterproofing means that quality will suffer a bit here. These are earbuds designed for the active listener, and phone calling is a nice to have but not a strong feature of this set.
Those minor quibbles aside, the Jaybird Vista is a very good choice for true wireless earbuds, especially for active users, and are highly recommended.

Frame rate junkies only
on June 27, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
If you are a frame rate junkie looking for an ultra fast refresh rate and support for Freesync/G-sync with a clean style, this is a monitor to look at. My review score is based on that audience. If you are not looking for extreme frame rates, I would look for a more appropriate option.
A quick note before the rest of the review - this monitor WILL work with G-sync as long as it is connected with display port to a 10 series or higher GPU running current drivers. It will not autodetect as a G-sync display though and it has to be forced using the Nvidia control panel. Once enabled it works fine. A future driver update may have it show up as certified as it is very new at the time of this review.
In the box is the display, the stand, a VESA adapter plate with screws (Apple, take note), a power cord, display port cable, USB cable, manuals…and a power brick. I hate power bricks. This one isn’t huge, but it’s really too bad the power supply isn’t integrated into the display.
I really like HP’s new super thin bezel design, it looks clean and this thing doesn’t scream overdone gamer rig. It looks super classy on a desk. It has a single RGB light that also has a “task lighting” bright white mode. It can also be shut off, which is how I have it. I also like the stand a lot. It’s minimalist and the up and down action is super smooth. It also allows for an easy tilt of the display. It does NOT support rotation for the display, not that you are probably planning running an ultra high frame rate display in portrait. It also has a spot to hang a headset which is a nice touch. There are no speakers, but there is an analog headphone out. It also has one DisplayPort 1.2 and two HDMI 2.0 ports. There is also an integrated USB hub with two ports, and hooking it up allows for control using the HP Omen command center instead of the menu in the display.
As this is a FHD TN display without HDR, you won’t get the nice high pixel density of a higher resolution panel or the color subtlety and depth of an IPS or HDR panel. This display has one thing in mind. Refresh rates. The panel supports an insane, blistering 240hz refresh rate. If you have the graphics card to drive it you can actually see so many frames it can change how you play. It’s just sooooooo smooth. Combined with the sync options to avoid stutter or tearing, it changes your expectations of what gaming can be. Colors and contrast are all fine on this panel, the viewing angles are pretty narrow though, especially vertically. I also found that going to the 3rd highest response time (the 4th option puts the panel into overdrive, stressing it) is important or else it ghosts noticeably.
Honestly, this panel leaves me conflicted. My other monitor is a 4K IPS panel that is 60hz. It is a much nicer “daily driver” as the colors and pixel density make it good for so many tasks. This display is focused on one thing and one thing alone – frames per second. Getting over 144hz (the most common speed before the 240hz came out) in FHD already takes a monster of a video card in modern games with higher detail levels and going even higher feels like diminishing returns over better resolution. Unless you are playing games where ultra high frame rates matter and you have the rig to drive this many FPS, I would personally go with a panel with better color depth and resolution. If you are the type of gamer this display is aiming for, it is an excellent option and I recommend it.

Good Choice for Gamers and Power Users
on June 19, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
This PC is hitting a sweet spot for gamers who want a good value and solid performance in most of today’s games at full HD but don’t want to build their own PC or spend hours tweaking settings. If you are into overclocking the CPU and memory to get every ounce of performance out of your PC, you are still better off doing a custom build. If you want a relatively compact PC at a fair price that is very capable for gaming today and has components that can be easily upgraded for the future this PC should be on your list.
Open the box, and there is the surprisingly compact case in a plastic bag with handles. Pull it up and out, get the power cord, and you are ready to go. There is also a very basic HP branded optical mouse and keyboard in the box…they are fine, but not gamer grade.
First, the case. I REALLY like this case. Clear tempered side panel, clean lines, push button side panel release, and RGB LED lighting that isn’t crazy. Using micro ATX means that this case is smaller than most and it’s classy enough to fit in most homes. Inside, it has a removable air filter, two slide out drive bays for 3.5” drives, and space for a radiator on the top if you want to go liquid cooled some day. There is also a support for full length cards. A couple of notes – there are no 5.25 bays on this thing and no optical drive of any kind. Also, the slide out drive bays are tool-less, to remove a drive you squeeze the tabs, pull out the tray and gently pry the side rails open away from the side of the drive, there are 4 pins that go in where screws would traditionally go to hold a drive in place. The drive bays do have 4 screw holes for mounting a 2.5” drive (such as an SSD), but you will need your own screws for that. One nice touch is that the vacant bay does have both power and SATA cables run to it. Other case notes, it has two USB ports, a headphone/headset jack, a mic input, and the power button inset in a cutout wedge on the top of the case. One of the front USB ports supports higher output power so you can charge a tablet or other fast charge a device on it.
The power supply is unremarkable, a 500W bronze efficiency part.
A single 80mm rear exhaust fan rounds out the system support mechanicals of the unit.
A 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive is included, which is OK for a system in this price range. I have the PC set into an under desk space, and I found that the drive created a very noticeable resonance hum from the drive motor. Combined with the noise from the drive head clunking around, it was overall pretty loud. Keeping with the price point, the part is adequate, but spinners are what they are and many users will want to replace this with an SSD as one of their first upgrades.
The motherboard is a micro ATX board with OMEN branding. It has two RAM slots, two M.2 slots (both occupied, one with the NVMe primary drive and one with the wireless card), and an unused header for liquid cooling if that is in your plans. The NVMe on my system is a 256gb Western Digital part, and it is just ridiculously fast. I’m blown away with how fast NVMe is. It is almost like loading things from system RAM, the PC can boot in as little as 5 seconds to the Windows 10 login screen. The RAM slots allow for dual channel if both are occupied. On this model only one is in use with a single 16GB stick. More on that in a minute. The board supports two SATA drives and the cables are provided and run to the drive bays. The south bridge is an Intel H370 part..which means no overclocking of the CPU and RAM. It’s a solid part that doesn’t have to manage a lot since the board is limited in connectivity, but this is not a PC for overclockers. The back panel has one 10gb/s USB A port, one 10gb/s USB C port, 4 5gb USB A ports, one gigabit Ethernet port, and three analog audio ports. Finally, a single PCIe slot is there for the all-important GPU.
The CPU is a 9th gen Core i9-9700. It has 8 cores and no hyperthreading. As it is a non-K variant, it has a slightly lower top clock speed and again no overclocking ability, carrying the theme in this box that while it has solid parts that gamers will use, it isn’t designed for the overclocking crowd. Personally, it doesn’t bother me as I am not a benchmark junkie and don’t like to run my system on the edge of stability to get a few more FPS. This part is more than adequate for 99% of users.
The system RAM is one area that I wish HP had done better. A single 16GB stick labeled as HyperX Fury is included in the system running at 2666mhz (1333mhz actual). DDR memory sends data on the up and down portions of the clock signaling, so the advertised speeds are always twice the actual clock. 16GB is plenty for almost every user and gamer, unless they are doing extensive ultra quality video editing, CAD modeling, or running several Virtual Machines, so that isn’t the issue…. The RAM has a very high CAS latency at 19. Even though the RAM’s clock is running at 1333mhz, and the faster the clock the less the effective latency is as well, it is still very high and offsets the benefits of the higher clock speed. It is also a unique part number, HP26D4U9D8ME-16X. Since this is just a single stick and a unique part number with an oddly high CL of 19, it’s almost impossible to find another one that matches to enable dual channel memory access. Dual channel allows the CPU to use both RAM sticks as a pair and greatly increases memory bandwidth, which is important to feed that i7 CPU. It is almost like HP is using a lower quality yield of RAM from Kingston’s HyperX line that has to have a higher CL clock to run. I looked all over the HP shop, and even HPs parts store, which states that the RAM is not orderable there, trying to find another stick to no avail. If you want dual channel, you are basically throwing out this part and getting a new RAM pair for the system. I really wish HP had included two 8GB sticks, even of the higher CL RAM, so it was running in dual channel or at least allowed customers to easily buy a second stick. Another note that shows that this is a bit more of an “as is” box – the system BIOS does not allow for XMP to be enabled for the system memory. XMP is a technology that allows the system to clock the memory to a maximum clock the manufacturer has specified as stable. While the H370 chipset on this board supports it, it cannot be enabled here. In fact, the system BIOS is pure vanilla HP, with none of the options enthusiasts enjoy. While not unexpected from a support and warranty perspective, it just reinforces that most of the performance is in the parts and not in tweaking on this box. This will likely cause you frustration though if you buy higher performance RAM – almost all RAM is marketed with the faster XMP numbers and not with the “standard” clock speeds. If you want to replace the system RAM, find the manufacturer specs and look for the “SPD” or JEDEC table to see how fast the memory can run in your system. For example, I did replace the HyperX stick with a dual 8GB set with a CL of 15. While that memory says it can go to 3000mhz, it is capped in here at 2133 as that is the top JEDEC spec for it. On the H370 the maximum XMP speed is 2666mhz, so the lack of XMP support is leaving some performance on the table here. Even at the lower speed, this RAM actually benchmarked faster than the included single stick since the CPU could leverage dual channel and the CL 15 meant that it had a lower effective latency even at the slower clock speed.
Finally, we are on to the GPU. This GPU is an HP manufactured GeForce 1660 Ti. It has 6GB of GDDR6, and is remarkably small as a half length card. On the back is a dual-link DVI, DisplayPort, and HDMI port. The 1660 is an interesting card, it is the new Nvidia Turing core without the ray tracing bits, and runs about as well as a GTX 1070. It has some other add ons over the 10X0 cards, like hardware video encoders, that make it a really powerful part for the price. If you are gaming at full HD and looking for high frames per second, this card can do that and it allows this system to really perform above its price point. If you want to push into 4K gaming at 60fps or higher, this card may fall short, but considering how much the GPU alone costs to get to that goal, this system is a good value.
Once powered up, the fan noise from the system is low and not annoying at all. When ramped up playing a game the fans become a little more audible, but since most gamers have a headset on it’s not noisy enough to be a problem. There are no whines or weird fan resonance noises, it just sounds like air moving as a white nose.
Performance for the system is very good for the price. For most gamers, this will meet their needs with room to grow and the case allows for easy upgradability when the time comes for new hardware. Running several benchmarks show good numbers despite the weakness of the RAM in this system. The new 9th gen Core i7 and the new 1660 Ti really shine here. Fortnite averages about 110fps in the game on Epic settings at 1080p.
On a whim, I priced out a similar system if I had built it as a DIY project, and came out to almost exactly the same price with an inferior case that didn’t have LED lighting or wireless, making this system a solid choice that isn’t ridiculously marked up over the consumer price of the components.
This is a very capable system at a reasonable price for a gamer or power user who is looking for an off the shelf system that doesn’t require all the work and research for a DIY system. The case is a highlight of the system, along with the NVMe, brand new i7, and the GTX 1660 Ti. HP could have done better for gamers by having a system BIOS that allowed for a few more options, especially XMP support for RAM, and by selecting a better memory configuration for the system. Overall, I recommend the system and plan on using it for quite a while!

Finally. The G502 has wireless. Logitech has long had nearly perfect right handed gaming mice, and now the G502 has been updated offer the top of the line wireless experience – HERO Sensor, Lightspeed engine, adjustable weights, and optional wireless induction charging using Logitech’s POWERPLAY gaming mat (mouse pad), which is sold separately from the mouse.
Like all Logitech G products, the packaging for this mouse is solid and mostly recyclable cardboard. In the box is the mouse, a high quality braided cable for charging and data if a wired connection is preferred, a small clamshell container that holds the receiver, an adapter (in case you need to use the cable to move the receiver away from interference or closer to the mouse), and the weights.
The fit and finish are great, the rubberized grips are comfortable, and the buttons are positioned well. Everything has a premium pro-grade feel that you would expect from a mouse of this caliber. The mouse isn’t the lightest wireless mouse you can buy, due to the physical limits of a larger righthanded mouse with multiple buttons, but for me a few grams of weight don’t matter. Depending on your use case, the included weights can make the mouse heavier or adjust the balance point, so you can tune this thing for whatever you prefer. To add weights, just push down on the seam at the bottom of the thumb rest, and the magnetic door will open right up. The inside is slightly rubberized to hold the weights in their spots. Same goes for the rear circle – push on the back of it and it will flip up. It can take more force than you might expect to get the circle to come up enough that you can get another finger under it and pull it out. Under there is a place to hold the receiver and the 4 gram weights can be added inside of the circle piece. This circle is also the part that gets replaced when the POWERPLAY mat is used to enable the induction charging feature. If the induction adapter is added, you cannot use the 4gram weights anymore as the adapter has no spaces for them. The wheel has the ability to either have the classic feel or with the push of a button the wheel unlocks and will spin freely, allowing for rapid scrolling.
The lightspeed 1ms wireless and the HERO sensor make this a serious mouse for any application – from gaming to productivity to photo editing. Features like the DPI shift allow the mouse to go from a higher DPI to a precision tool with the press of a button. The G-shift feature allows for a secondary mapping of every button to be applied when the G-shift key is held down, which lets you have up to 20 different commands mapped to buttons. The G-hub software also allows for macros to be mapped to a key, so the options are virtually limitless with this mouse.
The mouse also supports RGB lighting – there are two zones, one of them being the G logo, and the other being the settings lights. For maximum battery life you’ll probably want them off, but if using the induction charging or wired (or you just like lights) set them to anything you want using the G-hub software.
Overall, for me, this is about as perfect as a gaming mouse can get. The right handed ergonomics are top notch, the performance is great, and it has plenty of buttons to meet just about any need, from gaming to productivity.

A lock that does it all
on May 17, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
The Lockly Secure Pro is one of the latest and greatest smart locks on the market. This version is the deadbolt version, there is another that can be the latch for your home if your door doesn’t have a deadbolt and you don’t feel like drilling holes (or the door isn’t compatible with a deadbolt). This lock does it all – local Bluetooth connectivity and control, control over the web via the included micro hub, pass code with a unique security feature, and most convenient of all, fingerprint. If all else fails it also has a key. All of these features come with a hefty price tag to match.
Opening the box reveals a well organized set of manuals and parts. Critically, there is a card that contains the initial access code for the lock. DO NOT LOSE IT. If the lock is reset this is the only way to register and start programming it again. The quick start manual is a kind of a joke…it basically says get the app, and oh yeah do the little job called installation. The installation is the lengthy part and you might as well just start there. I had an existing deadbolt that I removed to install this lock – fortunately the drill holes were all compatible. Unfortunately my old lock had a decorative surround that this lock did not cover….so a repaint of the entire door was required as the old deadbolt was put on and painted around. A few hours later and it was time to install this thing. The installation was pretty straightforward and went along with the directions just fine, with one exception. At the point where the control box (the part with the batteries on the inside of the door) is being screwed to the mounting plate, the directions call for the data cable to be hooked through a little cable management hook on the back of the box. If you do this, it will come out at nearly a 90 degree angle and is too thick to get the box to mount flush to the plate. The plate should have a channel for the data cable to help with this. I ended up instead not using the hook and tucked the cable down the left side of the box where there is some space. Doing that let me mount the control box flush to the plate.
The lock itself is nicely finished and classy looking, the outside is heavy and metal, while the inside control box is painted plastic to match. The outside lock is pretty large with the screen, it definitely lets someone know that your house is equipped with some smarts. Combined with a smart doorbell you have a powerful combination of features that can increase security and convenience depending on the situation.
Not including the door repaint, it took about an hour to install the lock and get ready to set it up. First, install the app on a phone and set up an account. The account setup asks for minimal information, and nothing on your location, which is important as you may not want your address to be linked to your account if it is hacked. Along these lines, I would have liked an option to enforce two factor authentication via Email code for every new device that tries to log in to your account. As it stands there is just an email verification, but not an ability to keep someone from hacking your account and using the app on their own device. Use a strong password. By default, the app also doesn’t require authentication to the app when opening the app if the phone is unlocked, so depending on your level of paranoia you may want to enable that feature too.
After getting an account set up, it’s time to initialize the lock and start having fun! Put in 3 of the 4 (included) AAs, and while putting in the 4th hold down the program button while putting in the 4th. The lock will beep and do a quick self test to figure out which way it is installed in your door. After that, follow the directions in the app to add the lock via local Bluetooth. Once the lock is set up you can then set up the included WiFi bridge (which looks like an Apple phone charger with a tail sticking up, pretty tiny and discreet) and the included door sensor if you so desire. The bridge is an extra part that some locks don’t come with…what it does in this case though is allow for much better battery life than other locks. By using AC power to power the more power hungry WiFi connection, this lock can use low energy Bluetooth only, preserving the battery.
While the lock does allow for adding passcodes and fingerprints using only the lock, program button, and the front keypad, it is much easier to add those using the app. One quirk is that the app has two modes which can be seen in the upper left of the app. If there is a cloud, the app is connected to the lock through the hub and over the internet. If there is a Bluetooth symbol, the app is connected to the lock directly via the local Bluetooth connection. Many of the settings and adding new passcodes, fingerprints, etc can only be done in local mode. Tapping on the symbol will change the mode. Connecting and switching modes will likely lead you to realize another quirk about this lock… it beeps. A lot. Every time a connection is made (or the mode switched) it beeps twice. When commands are sent, more beeps. The beeps kind of start to drive you crazy when setting up the lock and changing settings. I wish there was a way to limit the beeps.
Unlocking the lock can be accomplished via the app, or locally. The keypad is one of the key innovations here - 4 circles containing the numbers in your passcodes and other numbers are presented. This allows you to enter the code and even if someone watched you they wouldn’t be able to tell what you code is. Just tap the circles that contain the numbers and it will open. It’s ingenious but might be hard for some people to understand. Fortunately this lock also supports fingerprint unlocking. Train the lock much like fingerprint ID on a smartphone, and unlocking is just a matter of setting your finger on the sensor. The lock claims that it can’t be fooled by a lifted print, and hopefully that is the case. As a last resort, the lock can also use a physical key. It also has contacts on the bottom where a 9V battery can be used to power up the lock in an emergency if the main AAs have failed. To lock the lock, use the app, the mechanical deadbolt, the key, or just tap the screen when the lock is unlocked and it will lock.
Overall, I am pleased with this smart lock. It seems to work well and the fingerprint unlock is incredibly convenient. At this price it should be perfect, and a couple things keep it from a completely perfect rating – the cable routing and thickness issue, combined with the incessant beeping when using the app, are both drawbacks that keep it from perfect. I would still recommend the lock for anyone looking for a top of the line smart lock that can use just about any method to control, even just a finger.

Quality wireless charger
on May 13, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
Wireless charging is the new-ish way to charge many smart phones. Instead of fumbling for a plug (and eventually wearing the port out), just set your phone on the pad and ding! like magic your phone starts charging. This charger from Belkin is a quality entry that has several safety features that will protect your phone and the charger, in addition to a higher wattage output that will speed up charging to most phones. It works fine through semi-thick cases and does seem to charge the phone up well without a lot of waste heat. The charger will also detect if your case has metal that might interfere, or if some other metallic object is placed on it so it won’t heat up things that aren’t actually a phone. If something did somehow go terribly wrong, Belkin has a $2,500 replacement guarantee to replace a device if it was damaged by the charger (very unlikely, this isn’t a no-name budget device).
In the box is also an AC adapter and a short 3 foot micro USB cable. I am a fan of the adapter being included, many chargers at lower prices don’t include the adapter, and you need a higher output adapter than the one included with most phones to power up a charging pad such as this. With an included adapter, you know the charger is getting the proper input wattage instead of guessing that one you have around is going to do the job. I do wish the cable were longer, a 3 foot cable can rarely reach to the top of a nightstand, so you may need a longer cable to make it work. The included adapter does help offset the higher price of this charger vs. some of the competition at lower prices.
The pad is a little thicker than others, but it can deliver 10W and doesn’t have a fan. An unobtrusive white light will glow when a device is placed on it successfully, or a red light will come on if an incompatible metal object is placed on the charger.
Overall, this is a very capable charger from a well trusted brand. It will charge your phone rapidly and safely and not try to charge things that are not phones. The included adapter ensures that the charger is getting the proper input voltage and helps offset the higher price. You are likely charging a phone that costs several hundred dollars, maybe even a thousand dollars, so skimping on a budget charger doesn’t make a lot of sense, and this charger is a great option.

A good idea hampered by Bluetooth
on May 2, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
Airfly, in concept, is pretty simple – take a device that only has a wired output, and convert it to Bluetooth so you can send the audio to headphones, or speakers, or other devices that can receive Bluetooth. Switch gamers looking for a wireless option, gym goers who want to use Bluetooth headphones to connect to equipment, or people who want to send audio from say a projector to a Bluetooth speaker may be in the market for something like this.
The transmitter itself is nice – a single button with an LED backlight is in the front, and the top has the mini jack connector and a micro usb (no USB C, sad) port for charging. The quality of the included mini jack cable, micro USB cable, and the transmitter seem good – the Airfly is not cheap brittle feeling plastic, and as a bonus there is a pouch to carry it all in. Charge it up and you are ready to go. The Airfly lasts about 8 hours before needing to be charged, which is long enough for most uses, and it is nice and compact.
Pairing is something of an interesting affair. Since Bluetooth was really designed for the transmitter to be a “smart” source device with a screen, you kind of have to guess what is really going on between your receiving device, such as headphones, and Airfly. Press the front button down for 10 seconds and it goes into pairing mode, flashing amber and white, and then put your device into pairing mode…and with a little luck, the two pair up. I found that doing this around other devices in my home made the Airfly not sure what to pick up, for example, my TV kept asking if I wanted to send audio to the Airfly, while my headphones were out in the cold. My suggestion, pair the Airfly and your receiving device as far away from other devices as possible so the Airfly doesn’t grab the wrong thing.
Once paired and plugged in to your source device…it works. Sound quality is good. But you will find that your experience will vary depending on the capability if your receiving device and what you are using it for. With the exception of AptX low latency, Bluetooth audio has a noticeable lag between when the sound is generated and when it is processed and outputted by the receiving device, such as headphones. For music and casual gaming (I found Zelda Breath of the Wild to have a tolerable amount of latency) it works fine. But for video, more intense gaming, and other time sensitive uses, the lag is noticeable and maddening. Lips are out of sync, action sequences have hits that land late, and it’s just a mess of late sounds. Airfly does support AptX low latency, which largely addresses this, but you need a receiving device that also supports it, and those are harder to find. Additionally, since there is possibly no display on either device, you may not know which mode it is in or have a way to change the connection to AptX LL. AptX LL is also more lossy, so sound quality takes a hit.
Over all, the Airfly does what it is advertised to do, but the limits of Bluetooth limit the device. If you feel that how you will use it won’t be affected by the latency, then this is a good quality transmitter once it gets paired to your receiving device. Just be aware that uses involving video or where audio timing is important the limits of Bluetooth really hold back the potential of this device.

SSD on a Budget
on April 9, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
This review will be in two parts, one an overview of SSD and a review for a PC user, and the second part where I think the QVO line shines best – as a fast external drive for a gaming console.
First, a quick note, this SSD needs a standard 2.5” SATA laptop bay to work correctly. It can also work in a desktop, so long as it can accept a 2.5” drive or you have an adapter kit. Many laptops now have physically smaller PCIe or SATA m2 drives (or are completely integrated flash that is not user replaceable) and this drive will not fit in those laptops.
Now, on to the review. Solid State Drives (SSDs) are the latest in large storage technology. Traditional hard drives use a spinning metal platter and a mechanical read/write head that moves across the platters to read or write data, kind of like a very small record player. These mechanical components wear, make noise, and take a lot of power to keep running. They are also very sensitive to being jostled or taking damage when dropped. All of these things are bad for portable computing. They also have the disadvantage of the time it takes for the read write head to find the data on the platter. When files are scattered on the drive, this problem is even worse, and can lead to a performance drain on your system while all of the data is fetched from all over the drive.
SSDs solve many of these issues by using chips instead of the platters, and they have no moving parts (hence the solid). Their major drawback is that over time the chips will wear and won’t be able to flip between a 1 and a 0, so they will eventually wear out. As anyone who has heard the click of death in a failed traditional hard drive knows, drive failure will happen to any technology eventually and you should always have backups.
The Samsung QVO line uses a new type of process to make the flash chips that store the data on an SSD. This process is cheaper, but ends up being a little slower, especially on write speeds. For most home users, especially those looking to add a spark to older laptops by replacing their old and slow spinners, the limits on write speeds are not likely to be very noticeable and the lower cost will be welcome instead of sinking more money into a more expensive drive that the system and use cases can’t really max out.
In laptops, this drive will certainly make a huge difference if upgrading from a spinning hard drive. The high data rates and lack of seek lag will result in an older laptop that feels new and fresh and will gain some longevity. It can also help offset a system with less RAM as it can find a deliver data so much faster to the system. More RAM is always better, but again if looking to add life to an older system, an SSD can help, and minimizing the investment in an older system is always welcome and that is where the QVO line really shines.
Now, on to a different use case. These SSDs are perfect for throwing into an external hard drive enclosure and using with a gaming console as a secondary drive. Consoles have data transfer limits and don’t do a lot of rapid writing to drives, so the limits of the QVO line are less apparent and their lower cost is a big benefit. Currently, I have a 4TB external 5400rpm spinner attached to an Xbox One X, so it already has the benefits of an external drive, but does this SSD make it even faster? The answer is yes, in most cases. To test, I copied some test games to the SSD, unplugged it, and did a full system restart and measured some load times for games off of the external spinner. For the SSD test, again, I reloaded the console to clear the memory and measured the load times. Some games, like Fortnite, took about as long to load to the menus and lobby, but I was consistently the first player on the launch island and there were no issues with late texture pop-ins, muddy textures, or late game object loads. Other games really showed an improvement. Skyrim SE, which is a very “fetchy” game due to the huge item and graphic assets, saw a performance gain to the menu and loading a save, and was generally more snappy with fewer loading hitches while wandering. Forza Horizon 4 was a massive improvement, nearly half the time to the main menu (42 seconds vs 1:10), and loading into the game was somehow insanely quick, 25 seconds vs 1:29 on the spinner. I know Horizon is joining an online session, so I think some of the delay on the spinner was the matchmaking, but still, it’s clear the SSD really gives a big benefit to the game.
If you are looking for the lowest price in an SSD with enough performance for most home users, the new QVO line should be something that is considered. These drives are ideally positioned to breath new life into older laptops, budget PC builders, or as an add on external drive for a gaming console.

$30 for a piece of plastic that broke.
By CmdrJones from New York, NY
Bought this in October when I bought my iPad.
It developed a crack within a few days, apparently because it installed and removed it a couple of times when I was applying a screen protector.
The other day it developed another crack that left a piece of plastic sticking out by the volume control. It's completely useless.
Emailed Belkin, they said I had to call, so I called. Spent 34 minutes on the phone and discovered they wouldn't replace it without a receipt.
I pointed out that I could send the thing to them (how would I have gotten it, right?) but, no.
Have to say I didn't expect a protective case to break, silly me.
So, the design or materials used thing are defective and I'm out $30.
No more Belkin products for me.

If you bought it from Best Buy they should be able to reprint your receipt, or you can get it from your reward zone/my BestBuy history if you have an account.

Should've been a Day 1 edition...
By kjk91
I like that it has a 1TB SSHD and comes with the new elite controller, but this really should've been a Day 1 edition for the next gen consoles. ESPECIALLY since with the xbox one you have to download all games onto the console even with a disk format compared to a direct purchase from the xbox store. I've had to uninstall and reinstall games over and over just to play a game that I want to because I have about 4-5 core games that I keep on there that I play regularly. 500GB HD on a next gen console is frustrating especially when we had it on the xbox 360.
Overall, I am thinking of getting this if only for the extra hard drive space to store games. If I can't trade in my old xbox one, I may be waiting to get this until the price drops and just dropping $100 on an external hard drive.
In regards to your space concerns

You know that you can just plug in an external HDD to your xbox one and store games and apps there, right? Just go get a portable external HDD, plug it into the back, and tuck it away behind your xbox and store your games on that.

I think this should of been day one edition .. This is good for people that are just getting a xbox one but also for hard core gamers for just the elite controller . I was going to get it but not worth it and in my opinion this isn't the best upgrade ever I think that will be when they make a slim ..
New focus since Day One
October 6, 2015
The focus of the Xbox team prior to the launch of the XBO was as a media hub of which gaming was just one function. Unfortunately they miscalculated the effect that focus would have on their most vocal and dedicated fans. Since then they have rededicated their focus to gamers and gear heads who appreciate the options of a hybrid SSD and the elite controller. It's actually pretty remarkable what they have done in 2 years in terms of feature enhancements to the console and this new line of Elite console versions and accessories that are focused on the gaming community.

Perfection
By Keyan
The Xbox already has one of the most well designed controllers out there, and this one refines it to perfection. Everything about this exudes quality, from the high end packaging, to the case, to the controller itself. It is a joy to hold and you immediately get a feeling of quality and fit and finish that is unparalleled in Xbox controllers. All of the interchangeable parts lock in magnetically, no friction tension parts to wear out, no wondering if it is going in the right way, they just lock into place and are secure but easy to remove when you want to customize the controller. The long throw sticks are perfect for driving games or other precision uses, and the two profiles allow for on the fly switching of sensitivity, a great feature for running around and then switching to a lower sensitivity mode for careful aiming. The mappable under paddles mean you can map buttons that would normally take your thumbs off of the sticks to your other fingers. The hair trigger locks are great, I tend to set the right one for hair trigger and the other for long throw for aiming.
I also like that this controller, like all of the other Xbox controllers, just uses two AA batteries. Sealed in batteries means that you can't just swap in new ones and keep going - and when they eventually wear out, it means a new controller. I use high capacity rechargeable batteries in mine. It also comes with a nice long braided USB cable if you need to use it wired.
This controller allowes for you to customize it exactly to your gaming style and it is the ultimate Xbox controller. Recommended for gamers who are looking for the very best and are willing to pay the price for this controller.
No I wasn't paid
October 29, 2015
Oh no, someone likes something on the Internet, they must be paid for it! No, I spent my own money on the controller and am just that impressed by it.
I did realize after posting that I didn't say anything negative and I was waiting for a comment like this to come along. If I had one negative it is the soft touch finish on the controller. It makes it feel great in the hands but it shows fingerprints if there is any oil at all on your hands, so it will need a wipe down with a microfiber cloth to keep the oils from breaking down the finish and to keep it from looking nasty.

The speed is great but the drive sits in the case pretty loosely.
Agreed
October 30, 2015
I found this too. I've had this with other enclosures by other manufacturers too, the solution I have found is to go to a hardware store and get a package of the "extreme" all weather heavy duty Velcro, cut a couple of small pads out of the "soft or fuzzy" side of the velcro, and stick them to the far end of the HDD that goes into the enclosure (over the platter area if you know where that is) - do not stick it to any exposed circuit boards or directly over the motor in the center of the platter area of the drive. That will act as both a sound dampener and it will fit in there very snugly. Makes the enclosure quieter and the drive won't rattle around.

The Smart Cover for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is constructed from a single piece of polyurethane to protect the front of your device. The Smart Cover automatically wakes your iPad when opened and puts it to sleep when closed. It folds into different positions to create a stand for reading, typing, or watching videos. And it’s easy to remove, so you can snap it on and off whenever you want.

It's a Smart Cover...
By Keyan
It does exactly what you would expect it to. As some others have mentioned it slightly overlaps the edges of the Pro - this is by design as Apple seems to assume you are going to also get the silicone back cover. With the back cover it fits perfectly to form a complete cover for the iPad Pro. One nice change in this generation is that the Smart Cover will magnically lock to the back of the iPad when it is folded open - although I don't like that my hands are against the felt the entire time it is flipped open as it will probably get dirty over time. I usually just pull it off when I am using the iPad and want it out of the way. The cover has a nice feel that matches the back shield cover. Overall it is exactly what you would expect. It and the back shield add up to a ridiculous price though, coming in at about $110 for little more than scratch protection.
Slight correction

Can only do what the source can output
July 29, 2016
A 4K monitor, just like a 4K TV, can only run at the resolution the source device can output and is also potentially limited by the cables used between the devices. An Xbox cannot output 4K yet - only the Xbox One S will be able to output at 4k, and it will require that any devices between the TV and the Xbox (such has a receiver) support 4K, along with the cables between components.
As someone who owns this monitor, I can tell you that it supports 4K just fine, and performs very well.

Enjoy desktop gaming power on your Alienware laptop with this Alienware 452BBRG graphics amplifier, which supports most full-length, dual-wide PCI-Express x16 graphics cards. The 4 USB 3.0 ports provide room for additional accessories.

Love it.

Its great. Setup was easy. I have a 1070 in it right now. The 1070 will play just about anything at 1080p with ultra settings. Don't use the amp as a docking station or you will hinder performance in games. Looking at youtube videos you can expect to attain about 70 to 85 percent of the cards power. Still its better than the 970m or 980m. The locking mechanism is really bad though. Hard to open and when you do it makes a sound like you broke it.
Why no docking station

Looking at the riser card and how this registers to the system, I'm pretty sure the USB portions of the Amp have dedicated conductors in the cable, meaning they will be on a separate path from the 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes that feed the graphics card. It shouldn't make any difference in game performance at all. What source did you find that indicates otherwise?

How does it stream tv shows is it like normal tv where you can watch what ever you want and just pay a bill once a month?

You pay 99 cents in most cases to rent a TV show. The selection is more limited than full cable, and you will be charged for whatever you watched at the end of the week just like any other iTunes purchases.

Can I play the AVI videos on my computer through Apple TV on only MP4s through itunes?

The movies must be in MP4 format and part of your iTunes library. There are many video converters that can do this for you easily.

Can I use windows XP with this unit

all my OS's are XP will this work with this unot???
Yes the only requirement is that iTunes is running if you want to access content on your computer. Otherwise the Apple TV is completely independent and does not need any computer.

Can I play a DVD in my PC or Mac and stream it through Apple TV? And, if so how?

No, the movie needs to be a file on your computer, not a disc in the drive.

Can you hook up extra storage box that's not microsoft to xbox 360?

Instead of buying the extra microsoft x-box storage, can you hook up any external hard drive to the xbox to increase the storage beyond 4 gb?
You can put up to two 16gb flash drives (as long as they are compatible, a quick internet search will give you a list of compatible drives) to any xbox for additional storage. These do not need to be xbox specific, but you do need to make sure they have good enough performance for the xbox to use them.

As far as hard drive, you can't just hook up an external hard drive to the xbox. Since you mention 4gb, I assume you have the new version of the xbox. The only Hard Drive that works with this xbox is the official MS accessory. The housing and connector shape are proprietary, so you need to get the official one.

does the xbox 4gb have internet browser and do you need to pay for it, and the for what features you gotta pay??

No, no Xboxs have an internet browser.

You need an xbox live Gold level subscription (now $59.99 a year) to play online multiplayer games, stream netflix, have access to demos and other exclusive content, and use the new ESPN features.
