Straightforward Thermostat with some smarts
on March 26, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
The Honeywell T9 is the latest Honeywell smart thermostat to hit the market. It also comes with one remote sensor to get temperature, humidity, and motion information from another room in the house. Additional sensors are sold separately that allow for multiple rooms to be monitored.
First of all, installing a thermostat is not as straightforward as other smart home projects can be. In my case, with a home that was built fairly recently, it was straightforward enough, but older homes or those with more complex wiring may find that it is a bit daunting. I would highly recommend checking your existing thermostat for a “C” wire, if you don’t have one, it is going to involve using the included C wire adapter to get it working. Installation will involve powering off your HVAC system, removing the old thermostat being sure to map which wire went where, potentially stripping wires back a little, pushing the wires into the new mount, attaching the mount to the wall, pushing the thermostat on to the mount, and powering everything back on. And probably painting and patching your wall where the old one was.
The thermostat has an understated design that will fit into most homes. The flange means that it looks like it comes out organically from the wall, instead of sitting like a wall wart that just comes straight out of the wall.
After getting it on the wall and powered up, it will run through a setup wizard and get connected to your WiFi. Surprisingly, it supports 2.4 and 5ghz wireless, which is welcome if you have a lot of interference. For me, I am using 2.4 for most of my utility devices as the better coverage from 2.4 is more important to me. Be sure to install the app and create an account. The app will find and register the thermostat, and you are ready to go! At this point you can pair the included sensor, or wait for another time.
If you have an existing Honeywell thermostat, you are going to feel right at home. All of the options that Honeywells have had for years are right there and the learning curve is almost zero. Using the app or the thermostat, you can set modes and schedules, fan options, and room priority. The touchscreen is responsive enough, but I found the viewing angles to be odd on the display. Looking down at it causes the screen to wash out, and since many thermostats are below eye level, it means leaning down to really get the best view of the display while using it.
As for the “smarts”, this thermostat is what I would consider semi-smart. It can use geofencing if you trust that kind of thing and can be connected to Alexa or Google assistant. There is no integration for Apple HomeKit or Siri as of the time of this review, although it may come later. It has remote sensors that can prioritize rooms or give priority to active rooms, and there are a lot of schedule options. Beyond that…it doesn’t do much. You can’t see how often your HVAC was running or get recommendations to make your home more efficient. I would like it to track when the system was running, so I can see that maybe if I adjusted the temperature a little during the times it is running the most I can make my home more efficient, but it doesn’t seem to have that feature.
One thing that you may like, or hate, is that unlike Nest, this thermostat isn’t acting as a remote information gathering sensor for Google. If you are completely into the Google ecosystem this may not bother you, but if you are more of a skeptic, this may be a big advantage to the Honeywell. Additionally, it comes from a company that has been making sensors and controls for years, so it is likely to be a reliable device that will serve for a long time.
Overall, the Honeywell T9 is a decent smart thermostat that has a very low learning curve. Keep in mind that installing it will be a little more involved than most smart home devices, but when done you will have more control over your home HVAC system from home or afar. If Honeywell added some features to track system usage so you can make more educated decisions on your system schedule and see the impact of changes, it would be an excellent device, and I hope those features are added in the future.

Powerful WiFi 6 Desk Spider
on February 14, 2019
Posted by: Keyan
The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 is the latest and greatest home router from ASUS. It features the latest WiFi standard, 802.11ax, or WiFi 6 as it is being branded now to simplify WiFi generations for consumers. It is a router geared towards gamers and power users who want the fastest wireless performance as well as some new wired LAN features that are less commonly seen in consumer devices.
To get the obvious out of the way, it’s huge. With antenna it is about 11 inches square and looks like a dead cyborg spider from your favorite dystopian sci-if movie. It is a matte black with satin metallic copper accents. Many of the pictures make it look like the accents are a red or orange color, but they aren’t. Given those possibilities the copper looks better….for a dead cyborg spider. On top is a big heat vent and a full RGB backlit ROG logo that you can customize in the UI. It’s OK, but I would really have liked to have the colors be sensitive to system load or something instead of 6 options that are just colors and flashing patterns and don’t relate to system activity. Personally, I’m not a huge RGB fan, so I turned it off. After a short assembly project to attach all 8 antennas, plug it in, push the power button, and it’s ready to go…
After powering up, it advertises the default wireless networks. Connect to them with just about any device, head to the address listed in the quick start paperwork, and you are off to the races. I actually did the initial setup using an iPhone…. For some reason my PC on a wired connection using Edge just pulled up a blank screen. Chrome worked fine, but something to keep in mind if using Edge that it might not work and the router is fine, it’s just the Edge browser.
Mine used an odd private IP range out of the box of 192.168.50.0/24. You may want to change that to match your old home network if you have any devices that had static IPs. After changing that and matching the SSIDs and pass phrases to my previous router, everything started connecting. I did have to reboot my ISP’s modem to get it to play nice and work with the router.
For wired connectivity, there are interesting options. 4 local 1 gigabit ports, one 1 gigabit WAN port, and one 2.5 multigigabit port are on the back. In addition, there are two USB 3 ports that can be used to connect a hard drive to use as a NAS, a USB printer, or a cell data USB modem to provide WAN redundancy. The multigigabit port is interesting for things like a high performance NAS. Unless you are into custom building PCs though you may not find a lot of uses for it.
If you are a gamer who is really picky about ping times, this router has some interesting options. For one, it will ping servers for some of the major games for you and let you know which ones are the best right now. It is also constantly running a ping and giving you general internet latency (the time it takes for a packet to go round trip) and jitter (the difference in round trip times between pings). Another feature is that you can set a single device on your network to having gaming traffic sent through a “GPN” that provides an optimized path to the servers for some games. For a fee you can enable it for more than one device.
Finally, the wireless connectivity. With 8 antennas this router offers 1 2.4ghz 4x4, and 2 5ghz 4x4 Wifi 6 or 802.11ax radios. It can use the array for universal and explicit beam forming, and also supports the latest tricks in WiFi frequency manipulation that allows for multiple hosts to use the same channel at the same time instead of only allowing one host to communicate at a time….provided you have end hosts that support it. Coverage is about the same as the ASUS RT-3100 it replaced and it covers the inside of a 5000 sqft home with three levels well despite being located in a den near an outside wall instead of centrally located. Signal stability seems to be good as many of my smaller 2.4ghz only devices work well in random areas of the house. The two 5ghz bands give you the flexibility to have one channel only used by devices that are latency sensitive like gaming consoles, while having other devices that might be streaming on another channel. Another advantage is that you can have one channel for your WiFi 6 (ax) clients, allowing them to operate at full speed with all of their advanced features while relegating older clients to the other channel. This does bring up a point though about this router – it is a premium device at a premium price as it supports the latest WiFi standard, but most if not all of your devices are not likely to support it when the standard is still new and some smaller devices like WiFi plugs and sensors may not put in WiFi 6 radios for years, opting for older and cheaper technologies. Since WiFi 6 requires a hardware radio change, only through replacement of older devices will you be able to take full advantage of this router.
ASUS has also gotten into the WiFi mesh system trend in home wireless where multiple wireless routers (or access points in they would be as mesh nodes) are chained to each other wirelessly to extend WiFi coverage in large homes or homes that structurally are difficult for a single router to cover. Since this router has 2 5ghz bands it can manage a mesh even more effectively, especially if the other nodes also have tri-band radios, although that can get very costly. I do like that ASUS has extended this “AiMesh” feature into almost their entire product line, even older routers now can be part of the mesh, giving life to older devices when a new one is put into the mix. Of course, mixing older access points and radios with new ones will result in an impact to performance for your devices.
For security, this ASUS router has many of the features that the top tier ASUS routers have had for a while, including built in IPS and malicious site blocking. The site blocking is a very useful feature that will block bad links you (or a family member) might get in an email, or if you mistype a common URL and there is a malicious server camping out on the misspelled site name. It can also do some DoS attack mitigation and detect if there is malware on one of your devices that is trying to reach back to its command and control server or send out your data. It also supports several guest networks so you can give your guests access to your internet connection but not the rest of your network.
Overall, this is a feature rich router that has excellent coverage and supports the latest WiFi standard, making it a solid choice for gamers and enthusiasts who want the very latest. For the average home user, many of the features are probably overkill and with consumer WiFi 6 (ax) clients only starting to come to market, it will be a while until most users can leverage everything this router has to offer. With the new WiFi 6 routers hitting the selves, the price on the older WiFi 5 (ac) routers are likely to fall, providing a good chance to pick up a very capable router at a lower price that will be more than enough for most users and homes. If you want an ultra high performance router that will support the latest standard well into the future and can convince your significant other (if you have one to convince) into accepting a cyborg desk spider, this is a solid choice.

Good performance for the price.
on December 6, 2018

These Insignia headphones are a solid performer from Best Buy’s private label brand. Sound quality is good and with the over ear hooks they stay put when running or doing other exercise. As a pair of true wireless headphones they have decent battery life and connectivity seems to be good. The microphone is not terrible for taking a quick phone call either. Battery life is solid and the recharging case is handy and easy to use.
One thing to keep in mind is that the ear buds are really good at sound isolation. Most outside noise is blocked. While this is usually a good thing, if you are outside running or riding a bike, it can be a hazard. Fortunately, these can used with only the right ear in, or by using the smaller ear tips so the seal is not as tight, although that affects sound quality.
A couple of things pull these back from perfect - the charging case can be a little finicky, with the right ear fitting well, but the left one pops up and won’t charge until the lid is closed on the case to push it into position. Also, the touch controls sometimes don’t respond, or sometimes react when just attempting to adjust the ear bud in the ear.
Overall, these are a decent set of wireless ear buds at a non-premium label price and should be considered for active users who want a secure fit and good sound quality.

A capable vacuum that is close to ideal
on October 10, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The Shark ION MultiFLEX F80 (IF281) is Shark’s latest entry into the handheld cordless stick vacuum market. As an owner of an older cordless stick vacuum by Dyson I was interested in how this compared and if it could match or exceed the performance of the other vacuum.
Opening the box was a bit of a mixed bag – on one hand, there are the two included Li-Ion batteries for the vacuum, which is vey nice when vacuuming a large area. Shark claims the two batteries can power the vacuum for 80 minutes…..but that is using the hand vac and not the power head. Expect around 20 minutes of run time per battery with the power head on and using the boost mode occasionally for stubborn debris. The batteries have a handy 3 bar power gauge in them so you know how much charge is left. On the other hand, outside of the power head, the included accessories leave a lot to be desired. The “charging dock” is just a pass thru for the included AC adapter and not a separate charging point, which means you can only charge one of the two batteries at a time. The crevice tool is ok, and there is an upholstery brush that has some lint brush type short bristles. Missing from this kit is any kind of crevice tool with a soft bristle brush (great for cars and leather seats), or a power head for the hand vac mode for cleaning stairs and furniture. My other stick vac came with both, and at this price point I expected a little more from this kit.
A couple of other feature notes – the power head has a lot of rollers in it, and even headlights! The trade off is that for a stick vac it is very large. You might find that it can’t fit into smaller corners like others in the market can. The size of the head also somewhat limits the other cool feature of this vacuum, the flex option. With the press of a button, the stick releases in the middle and lets it bend to go flat under furniture and other hard to reach places. I found it useful to get under things like an entertainment center, but the head was a little tall to get under a couch and low chairs. If you fold the flexible part all the way over it will lock and the entire unit will be free standing, which is extremely convenient and very clever.
I do really like that this has a push on and off button instead of the trigger that has to be held down like my other vac, and has two modes for carpet or for bare floors.
So, how does it perform? I found suction and cleaning to be pretty good, and it could pick up larger debris more reliably than my older stick vac. It is also VERY quiet compared to the other stick vac. One big difference is that the shark seems to be using a lower RPM motor with a larger surface area impeller instead of the ultra high speed impeller that Dyson uses to force air through their root cyclone system. The result is that more air moves, but at a slower velocity, than the Dyson stick vacs. This makes it much quieter with suction that feels about the same. Since this vac does not have the dust separating power of Dyson’s cyclones, it uses progressive filtering to clean the air before it leaves the vac. Air enters the bin area, where larger particles are separated, before being pulled through a screen filter, then into a foam filter, and finally through a final filter at the exhaust. The foam and final fine filter need to be cleaned regularly (recommendation is monthly) with clean water. I found that pet hair often finds its way wrapped around the screen filter and needs to be pulled off manually when the bin is cleaned, which is pretty frequently as the bin is not huge. Since the motor unit has to be separated from the stick and power head to empty, it is handy that the power head is free standing.
Overall, this is a very capable cordless stick vac that has some advantages over the competition in terms of run time, power head performance, noise, and flexibility. The vacuum system itself is more traditional, with two filters that will need regular cleaning, vs the advanced system found in Dysons. Finally, the lack of a couple of essential accessories at this price point make the overall value of the vacuum feel a little less than perfect.

New stabilization is the real deal, great camera
on October 3, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The GoPro Hero 7 Black is the new top of the line action camera from GoPro. In the age of cell phones GoPro finds itself in something of an interesting position. GoPro, like many other camera companies, needs to convince you that carrying – and purchasing – a dedicated camera is worth it. The Hero 7 Black tries to do just that by providing capabilities and features that no cellphone – or other action camera – can match.
The major feature that GoPro is touting on the Hero 7 Black is the new hypersmooth software image stabilization, which provides image stability that previously was limited to a dedicated gimbal. For the most part, it works, and saves you the cost and bulk of having another piece of hardware. It also has the advantage that it works underwater and in any conditions the GoPro can handle. There are some limits to the video resolutions that can use hypersmooth, but the most popular ones are covered. Personally, I found 2.7k/60fps/Linear to be about the perfect setting for general video taking. On that mode the hypersmooth is extremely effective, with the camera able to handle a remarkable amount of shake and still keep the jitter out of your video. It can’t quite compensate for all motion as well as a mechanical gimbal, but the image is actually more natural feeling to me, it has just enough motion that it feels natural and doesn’t have the almost dreamlike floating effect that gimbals create.
The Hero 7 Black can go all the way to 4K/60 with hypersmooth, and also offers other modes including super slo-mo and hyperlapse, a stabilized time lapse that is a lot of fun for capturing movement through space or around objects.
Other features include a live streaming function that uses your cell phone to provide the data connection. It also has GPS, and a new super photo mode that does in camera image enhancement with HDR. My review includes both a pic without and with the HDR enabled, and it does a good job of managing high contrast situations and increasing color without making the image overly flat without natural contrast. The GoPro also responds to voice commands, which is very helpful if you have the camera in a position where it is hard to reach or your hands are full and not able to get to the camera. It can also connect to your smartphone or tablet wirelessly to view and copy media, and GoPro offers some decent editing software to do some quick edits.
It has only two buttons, one is the shutter, and the other is the power and mode selector. It also has a capacitive touch screen to navigate settings and provide additional control. One note, if using the camera in or around water, the screen can sometimes pick up contact that you aren’t making and it can sometimes get a little crazy. There is a screen lock feature to stop this unintentional input from registering.
Since this is a GoPro, there is an entire ecosystem of accessories to mount the camera to, making it far more capable than your average point and shoot for capturing action shots and going into extreme environments.
The package includes the camera, “the frame” which clamps the camera in a tight frame case that has a quick mount included. It also has two adhesive mounts (one flat and one curved) to secure the camera to a helmet or other hard surface. Additionally, a USB A to C cable to connect to a PC and to charge the camera is in the box. The included directions are simple picture directions to show you how to get it out of the frame, charged, and telling you to get the app for your mobile device. You’ll have to go online to learn more about your camera.
As this product is new to market, there are a couple of quirks with the software that should be worked out soon, one of which is when the camera is turned off shortly after turning on, it takes a while for the camera to actually shut down, sometimes around 10 seconds.
The largest drawback to the GoPro is the battery life. One trade off for the remarkably small package with all of this technology and intense image processing is that the battery is small for the task being asked of it. There are some things that can be done, such as turning off some of the in camera processing and only activating the wireless functions when needed, but you are going to want to invest in extra batteries to record a full day of adventures. Fortunately, the batteries are not terribly overpriced as is often the case for cameras.
This little camera is pretty expensive, but it does pack an impressive number of features in a compact, rugged, and waterproof (to 33ft) body. Since it can go places your cell phone can’t, or you wouldn’t want to put it, the GoPro Hero 7 Black still fills a unique need and it is hard to find another product that can do everything it can do. The hypersmooth stabilization is a real revolution in in-camera software stabilization and allows for the creation of ready to use video right out of the camera or live using the live streaming function.

Complete grooming kit with a powerful shaver
on August 16, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The Philips Mutligroom 9000 kit is the most complete grooming kit I have seen for home use. The kit comes with a vast number of combs and different cutting heads for different purposes. The heads include a precision blade, wide blade, medium width, nose, body, and even a shaving foil. All of these are packaged in a nice rubberized case to keep the kit together either in your cabinet or on the go.
The combs come in a variety of sizes, all of which are clearly marked. There is even an adjustable one if you want to pack for travel and don’t want to take all of the parts with you. Some of the combs are for the wide head, and others are green and marked for body. The two body combs are the same depth as two of the face combs, but are a different color so you aren’t using the same one on your face as you may be using for other areas of the body.
Cutting performance is excellent with the blades cutting through hair cleanly without any pulling or pinching. The stainless and rubberized body of the shaver is the perfect size and shape for me to have full control while shaving. They also resist clogging when cutting through dense hair. The variety of combs and shaving heads mean this one body can do everything you might need.
Couple of quirks – the shaver body says it is a 7000 series, and so do the directions, but the kit is listed as a 9000. I would assume this is due to either a marketing change or a way to delineate that this is the ultimate kit with a huge number of blades and combs. The other thing I found odd was that the charging cord feels very stiff, almost like plastic. It’s not supple for flexible at all, and given the quality of the rest of the kit even down to the case, it feels oddly cheap. Hopefully it lasts and does not fail as the shaver will be useless without it.
Overall, this is a complete kit for someone who is interested in shaving hair on the face, head, and body, and would be a great tool for someone who feels that in order to sell the house you have to trim the hedges.

Great sound, simple to use, nice build quality
on August 11, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The Logitech Pro headset is a no-frills headset focused on sound quality and long wear comfort. Suitable for PC or console gaming, the headset provides excellent sound quality with minimal distortion, even during heavy action.
The headset comes with a long 6.5’ (2m) cable with an in-line volume wheel and mute slide toggle. The cable is an extremely high quality braided jacket type that is very flexible and should last for a lot of travel and use. It also comes with a Y cable if you need to break out the cable for a microphone input. For my use I don’t need a cable this long, when using it off of an Xbox controller for example the cable is very, very long. It would have been nice to have a cable wrap or even Velcro to manage the cable, sadly all that is included is a twist tie. I put mine in a cable turtle and that keeps it nicely under control. The rest of the box includes the detachable boom mic and a set of micro suede ear cups if the leatherette ones aren’t to your liking. The mic is not a flip up to mute type, you have to use the slider toggle on the line or a software control to mute.
As this is an unpowered headset, some features from powered headsets will need to be done with apps or your console. The volume wheel controls all of the audio coming into the headset, so you will need to manage game to chat ratios and mic monitor using your PC or console. Also, there is no active noise cancellation with this headset. On the positive side the lack of a battery makes the headset light and it is always ready to go. It does a good job of sound isolation without full active noise cancellation.
The build quality feels solid, with a soft touch finish on the ear cups, deep memory foam ear cups, a band that is steel and easy to adjust, and a pretty strong clamp to the head band. I am glad the ear cups are deep – with the clamping strength it would be uncomfortable with thin pads, but as it is I found it to be very comfortable to wear this headset for as long as I wanted to keep playing.
For my testing on the PC, I did a mix of music and games, and the headset performed well at both tasks. Music was well balanced and games were clear and important sounds were easy to pick up on.
I also tested this headset on an Xbox One using the headphone jack on the controller. This also worked well, with some games that are known for positional audio such as Overwatch really sounding great using Dolby Atmos for Headphones (more on that later). Voice comms were also clear. Other games like Skyrim were really detailed, with the harsh cling of weapons being drawn and the boom of spells detonating being well relayed. Even soft sounds such as the quiet whisper of a conjuration spell being equipped were clear and easy to pick up.
One thing to note with the marketing for this headset that kind of bothers me – the headset by itself is not surround sound. As it is an unpowered analog headset it has no surround processing. You need to use a software surround virtualizer like Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones to get virtual surround sound. Windows Sonic is in all current Windows 10 builds and the Xbox One, Dolby Atmos for Headphones can be purchased optionally and used on up to 10 devices PCs or Xbox consoles. If you don’t have a software option for surround sound, you are left with stereo sound.
Overall, this headset features excellent sound and build quality and a price point that is on target for an unpowered analog headset of this type. I would recommend it for a gamer or someone wanting to get a better sound experience than cheap headphones or ear buds.

Good no frills gaming mouse
on August 4, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The G305 gaming mouse by Logitech is a no-frills entry level gaming mouse for people who want to use the latest sensor technology but don’t want to pay as much as the premium gaming mice. The mouse is wireless only and uses a replaceable AA for power – which is handy as it is easy to get it going again when the battery dies. Logitech advertises a very long battery life for this mouse using their newest sensor technology and there is a low battery indicator that tells you to swap out the battery when it does get low. One note – you must download and install the Logitech Gaming software to use all of the features of this mouse.
As far as performance, this mouse performs well. The up to 12,000 dpi sensor technology in the G series optical mice is impressive, and honestly I would recommend anyone who spends a decent amount of time in spreadsheets or especially diagramming using a mouse purchase a gaming mouse for those uses as well – the high quality sensors make those jobs much easier.
One limitation on this mouse is the number of buttons. With only two side buttons and no horizontal scroll, you are limited to 6 buttons. One nice feature though for Logitech G mice is the ability to map one button to “G-Shift”, which allows the other buttons to perform a second function when the shift button is also held down. I personally map the mouse wheel button to this function, and then map the other buttons on the mouse to other things I use regularly.
For ergonomics, this mouse is pretty compact and can be used in either hand, although the side buttons are kind of awkward for lefties. It’s actually a great travel gaming mouse – not too bulky or heavy, and completely self-contained with a slot under the back for the receiver to go.
I would recommend this mouse for a PC user who wants to step up the sensitivity of their mouse, for a gamer on a budget, or for a gamer who wants a compact option to pack with a laptop for travel. The lack of buttons is a limitation on this mouse, but the sensor and the simple battery replacement are both nice features.

Excellent Keyboard for users who want feedback
on August 4, 2018
Posted by: Keyan
The Logitech G513 with GX Blue keys is a mechanical keyboard built for gamers or for people who really want a satisfying and noticeable mechanical click and feedback from their keyboard. The keyboard is compact for a full sized keyboard targeted towards gamers – no extra rows of keys on the sides or along the top, which along with the metal deck and raised keys makes this a very clean and non-pretentious gaming keyboard. The RGB lighting is great – vibrant and with a huge number of customization options to meet any gamer or keyboard enthusiast’s style.
The keyboard is heavy and sits firmly on your desk surface, perfect for intense gaming and it exudes quality at every turn. The thick braided cable (with a split to optionally connect to your PC to enable the pass-thru port for a gaming mouse or other accessory) should last for lots of LAN parties or just daily use. The keyboard also has swing out feet if you want to incline the deck. The G513 also comes with a memory foam wrist pad and extra keys with a key puller if replacing keys or moving them around is your thing. Both the wrist pad and the key puller/keys are missing from the less expensive G512 – if those are important to you then the G513 is the perfect choice.
The keyboard is extremely responsive (Logitech advertises 1ms response time) and I could not detect any issues with inputs using it normally. It is possible when quickly cycling a key to release and actuate it again without the click by not letting the key travel all the way back up – but the results are inconsistent, most presses are registered while a few others aren’t. This isn’t the normal use case for the keyboard but if you are a gamer who likes to very rapidly tap/cycle a key you should be aware that the keys can respond in this way.
For gamers, the F keys can be remapped and macro/custom keys assigned using Logitech’s G Gaming software. Just be aware that it has no dedicated G keys, the F keys are the only option. For some this may be a plus – as I mentioned before the keyboard is very clean and sophisticated, but for others who want dedicated keys for those functions there are other options by Logitech and the other keyboard manufacturers in the market.
The G513 comes with three key options now – the Romer G keys have a no feedback silent key and a tactile bump feedback key option. The GX Blue keys (which the keyboard I am reviewing has) are new to the G513. They provide both a very solid tactile feedback and a distinct click as they are pressed. This keyboard is loud, there no doubt about it. The key clicks are louder than a mouse click and if you bring this guy to a LAN party or to a gaming convention they might chase you out. If you have housemates in a smaller space the result may be the same. In my den with a door it’s not a problem for the rest of the family, but be aware that this keyboard is loud and mechanical sounding. That said, the feel of the keyboard is great. They tactile feedback and the sound make for a very satisfying typing and gaming experience that has been lost with many cheap membrane keyboards over the years. Gamers should note that the key press force and the travel distance for these keys is higher than the Romer G options – for those who feel that a light key with short actuation distance gives them an advantage then this may not be the best option.
Overall, this keyboard is great if a solid mechanical feel and sound is what you are looking for in a keyboard. The features and style are excellent, and I am really enjoying using it.

Huge, but does what you expect it to do

The Philips Airfryer XXL is an excellent air fryer that prepares crispy food quickly and easily. Like all other airfryers, this one uses convection to make food crispy. Unlike a traditional convection oven, the airflow is faster and more focused, and the food is held suspended on an open grate above the bottom of the cooking surface, allowing air to flow all around the food quickly. As the food warms up, the oils in the food are released into this airflow and excess is captured in the bottom of the fryer, which then coat the food and "fry" it, giving it a crispy texture.
Philips has an advanced airflow system that allows for a very even cooking of food in the fryer. This model has two analog dials, one for temp and one for time, which can be set in seconds and you are ready to go. There is no preheating required like a traditional oven, and the rapid convection airflow makes it cook faster than traditional oven baking. I found a reduction in time of about 1/3 over oven baking things like tater tots and chicken nuggets, at a slightly lower temperature. There is a guide included to help give some directions on cooking temps and times for various common items. Since the food is held up by a thin grate, you don't need to turn it to get the entire surface of the food crispy, although if the basket is full (like a pile of tater tots or fries), you will need to cook for half of the time, open it up, and stir the contents over a sink (to allow small particles to drop there instead of into the fryer, where they will burn and smoke) to ensure that everything gets crispy. I would also suggest that if you are loading breaded or food with small particles to load it over a sink and gently shake the basket to get those particles out before starting to cook. Doing this left the fryer very clean after cooking. When it comes time to clean up, it can be hand cleaned easily or all of the removable cooking parts can be put in the dishwasher, although they take up quite a bit of space.
Speaking of space, this model is huge. It says XXL, and they mean it. It’s larger than an Instapot. This is designed for a family or household that is feeding multiple people most of the time. Just be prepared to make space for this thing on a counter or in a storage area when it’s not in use.
Overall, this airfryer is excellent with space to cook a variety of foods. It works well and is easy to use and clean up.

$30 for a piece of plastic that broke.
By CmdrJones from New York, NY
Bought this in October when I bought my iPad.
It developed a crack within a few days, apparently because it installed and removed it a couple of times when I was applying a screen protector.
The other day it developed another crack that left a piece of plastic sticking out by the volume control. It's completely useless.
Emailed Belkin, they said I had to call, so I called. Spent 34 minutes on the phone and discovered they wouldn't replace it without a receipt.
I pointed out that I could send the thing to them (how would I have gotten it, right?) but, no.
Have to say I didn't expect a protective case to break, silly me.
So, the design or materials used thing are defective and I'm out $30.
No more Belkin products for me.
December 28, 2013
If you bought it from Best Buy they should be able to reprint your receipt, or you can get it from your reward zone/my BestBuy history if you have an account.

Should've been a Day 1 edition...
By kjk91
I like that it has a 1TB SSHD and comes with the new elite controller, but this really should've been a Day 1 edition for the next gen consoles. ESPECIALLY since with the xbox one you have to download all games onto the console even with a disk format compared to a direct purchase from the xbox store. I've had to uninstall and reinstall games over and over just to play a game that I want to because I have about 4-5 core games that I keep on there that I play regularly. 500GB HD on a next gen console is frustrating especially when we had it on the xbox 360.
Overall, I am thinking of getting this if only for the extra hard drive space to store games. If I can't trade in my old xbox one, I may be waiting to get this until the price drops and just dropping $100 on an external hard drive.
In regards to your space concerns
October 6, 2015
You know that you can just plug in an external HDD to your xbox one and store games and apps there, right? Just go get a portable external HDD, plug it into the back, and tuck it away behind your xbox and store your games on that.

This is a ok deal..

I think this should of been day one edition .. This is good for people that are just getting a xbox one but also for hard core gamers for just the elite controller . I was going to get it but not worth it and in my opinion this isn't the best upgrade ever I think that will be when they make a slim ..
New focus since Day One
October 6, 2015
The focus of the Xbox team prior to the launch of the XBO was as a media hub of which gaming was just one function. Unfortunately they miscalculated the effect that focus would have on their most vocal and dedicated fans. Since then they have rededicated their focus to gamers and gear heads who appreciate the options of a hybrid SSD and the elite controller. It's actually pretty remarkable what they have done in 2 years in terms of feature enhancements to the console and this new line of Elite console versions and accessories that are focused on the gaming community.

Perfection
By Keyan
The Xbox already has one of the most well designed controllers out there, and this one refines it to perfection. Everything about this exudes quality, from the high end packaging, to the case, to the controller itself. It is a joy to hold and you immediately get a feeling of quality and fit and finish that is unparalleled in Xbox controllers. All of the interchangeable parts lock in magnetically, no friction tension parts to wear out, no wondering if it is going in the right way, they just lock into place and are secure but easy to remove when you want to customize the controller. The long throw sticks are perfect for driving games or other precision uses, and the two profiles allow for on the fly switching of sensitivity, a great feature for running around and then switching to a lower sensitivity mode for careful aiming. The mappable under paddles mean you can map buttons that would normally take your thumbs off of the sticks to your other fingers. The hair trigger locks are great, I tend to set the right one for hair trigger and the other for long throw for aiming.
I also like that this controller, like all of the other Xbox controllers, just uses two AA batteries. Sealed in batteries means that you can't just swap in new ones and keep going - and when they eventually wear out, it means a new controller. I use high capacity rechargeable batteries in mine. It also comes with a nice long braided USB cable if you need to use it wired.
This controller allowes for you to customize it exactly to your gaming style and it is the ultimate Xbox controller. Recommended for gamers who are looking for the very best and are willing to pay the price for this controller.
No I wasn't paid
October 29, 2015
Oh no, someone likes something on the Internet, they must be paid for it! No, I spent my own money on the controller and am just that impressed by it.
I did realize after posting that I didn't say anything negative and I was waiting for a comment like this to come along. If I had one negative it is the soft touch finish on the controller. It makes it feel great in the hands but it shows fingerprints if there is any oil at all on your hands, so it will need a wipe down with a microfiber cloth to keep the oils from breaking down the finish and to keep it from looking nasty.

Works but 3.5 HD is not very snug.
By RSS060609
The speed is great but the drive sits in the case pretty loosely.
Agreed
October 30, 2015
I found this too. I've had this with other enclosures by other manufacturers too, the solution I have found is to go to a hardware store and get a package of the "extreme" all weather heavy duty Velcro, cut a couple of small pads out of the "soft or fuzzy" side of the velcro, and stick them to the far end of the HDD that goes into the enclosure (over the platter area if you know where that is) - do not stick it to any exposed circuit boards or directly over the motor in the center of the platter area of the drive. That will act as both a sound dampener and it will fit in there very snugly. Makes the enclosure quieter and the drive won't rattle around.

The Smart Cover for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is constructed from a single piece of polyurethane to protect the front of your device. The Smart Cover automatically wakes your iPad when opened and puts it to sleep when closed. It folds into different positions to create a stand for reading, typing, or watching videos. And it’s easy to remove, so you can snap it on and off whenever you want.

It's a Smart Cover...
By Keyan
It does exactly what you would expect it to. As some others have mentioned it slightly overlaps the edges of the Pro - this is by design as Apple seems to assume you are going to also get the silicone back cover. With the back cover it fits perfectly to form a complete cover for the iPad Pro. One nice change in this generation is that the Smart Cover will magnically lock to the back of the iPad when it is folded open - although I don't like that my hands are against the felt the entire time it is flipped open as it will probably get dirty over time. I usually just pull it off when I am using the iPad and want it out of the way. The cover has a nice feel that matches the back shield cover. Overall it is exactly what you would expect. It and the back shield add up to a ridiculous price though, coming in at about $110 for little more than scratch protection.
Slight correction

It's closer to $120 for both covers....

Can only do what the source can output
July 29, 2016
A 4K monitor, just like a 4K TV, can only run at the resolution the source device can output and is also potentially limited by the cables used between the devices. An Xbox cannot output 4K yet - only the Xbox One S will be able to output at 4k, and it will require that any devices between the TV and the Xbox (such has a receiver) support 4K, along with the cables between components.
As someone who owns this monitor, I can tell you that it supports 4K just fine, and performs very well.

Love it.
By solat152
Its great. Setup was easy. I have a 1070 in it right now. The 1070 will play just about anything at 1080p with ultra settings. Don't use the amp as a docking station or you will hinder performance in games. Looking at youtube videos you can expect to attain about 70 to 85 percent of the cards power. Still its better than the 970m or 980m. The locking mechanism is really bad though. Hard to open and when you do it makes a sound like you broke it.
Why no docking station
August 1, 2016
Looking at the riser card and how this registers to the system, I'm pretty sure the USB portions of the Amp have dedicated conductors in the cable, meaning they will be on a separate path from the 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes that feed the graphics card. It shouldn't make any difference in game performance at all. What source did you find that indicates otherwise?

can you play any games of xbox with only a 4g hard drive

Yes, you can play just about every game, I think the only one that might not work is Halo Reach if you want to play Co-Op mode as it requires a hard drive to be present. It's a bug but I am not sure if it is fixed. You will be limited on what downloadable content you can store on the console and there is not enough space to install games which lowers their load time and stops the optical drive from spinning. You can either add up to a 16gb flash drive (make sure it's a compatible version) to the console for more storage or add the 250gb harddrive for $130 later.
