Decent laptop, upgradeable but missing features

BBY cut some corners with Lenovo to bring you a decent Flex 4 at a competitive price. There are five models of the Flex 4 - the 1435, 1470 (this model), 1480, 1570 and 1580. Primary differences are components both in terns of keyboard, screen resolution/size along with processor type and memory. This one has a Pentium Dual Core 4405U with hyper threading (makes it appear as two additional cores to run two extra threads), a NON BACKLIT KEYBOARD FRU PART aka Field Replaceable Unit, a touchscreen 1355x768 resolution instead of the 1920x1080 which the northbridge chip built-in to the Pentium 4405U GPU Intel HD 510 can output via the external full size HDMI, along with a generic 500GB slow HDD at 5400rpm with a meager 4GB of memory albeit DDR4.
I recommend you upgrade the HDD to an 7mm 2.5 SSD of choice along with up to 16GB of DDR4 2133mhz single module dual channel and ranked memory. I bought elsewhere a Corsair 240GB ForceLE SSD (one of the best) along with 16GB of Crucial aka Micron's Best memory. This laptop is really for one who wants to occasionally use this as a laptop, as a tablet-like device and also connected to an external TV, monitor or pico projector along with a good external keyboard and mouse. Consider a good USB hub and perhaps Logitech K700/800 backlit keyboard and laser mouse with your choice of an HDMI device and you are good to go.
I use mine for network penetration testing with VMware Workstation Pro, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Rapid7 tools and a few others including Splunk elsewhere and Office365. So if you are willing to live with these limitations and feel inclined to spend a little more money for upgrades along with installing or paying for that - go for it otherwise expect to spend $900-1100 to get these features. Lastly, if you feel adventurous, theoretically the FCBGA1356 socket type on the main system board cld accept a good Core i3 or i5 but don't try the Core i7 without expecpcting this to possibly overhealt. See these links for more details on the CPU/GPU and part 5CB0L46004 you need at the bottom of the Lenovo Maintenance Manual if you must have the backlit keyboard like my Yoga 2 Pro Ultrabook has.

Decent 2 in 1 and hardware but average engineering
on December 23, 2014

Hello readers,
This is a review by a former Geek Squad Agent. I will focus this review in two perspectives - one in summary for those not technically inclined and another for those who are.
Summary - This is a decent 2 in 1 tablet and/or laptop design. It has a sleek finish and I like the rubber-like feel around and under it. This PC comes with Windows 8.1 (not Pro as this is an upgrade that can be added once purchased via Microsoft) and has a nice touchscreen. There is a gigabit ethernet port for those that need it (like me). The CPU (Intel Core i5), memory (6GB of DDR3L) and hard disk (1TB) is more than enough for most users and wireless connectivity is good. The screen is bright and seems to be a bit flexible which is odd but expected with the design. This model is heavier than many 2 in 1 units by about one (1) lb if the extra weight is an issue (this could be attributed to its battery size, which lasts 9-12 hours of use depending on design. Please be aware that the SD(HC/XC) cards do fit and there is a single USB 3.0 port but the SD card will stick out significantly. This and the lack of a backlit keyboard (Best Buy has this listed as having one is incorrect) make this of average engineering. There is a decent amount of bloatware but some is useful for the average person. Overall, I give this 3.5 stars but I can't give it a four because of the SD card slot and weight above others in its class.
Tech Summary: Do not be misled by Best Buy's specs as they are incorrect. There is indeed an Intel Core i5 with DDR3L memory and a slower 5400rpm 1TB hard disk. The screen is great and battery is great as is described as a four cell on Acer's own support site. There is indeed a gigabit ethernet adapter and a big bonus - the wireless adapter is a Qualcomm Atheros for those who run Linux distros like myself. There is no TPM or any security features and this unit is not upgradable other than to an SSD. Also, as mentioned in the summary - if you need a backlit keyboard, Acer dropped the ball and left it out. There is much bloatware that any technical minded user will likely need to remove. If you are considering a Core i5 model and can live with an SD card sticking out and the extra one (1) lb of weight, this could be a really decent laptop and the flush surface of the screen as a tablet is a plus. This hardware will probably work well with Ubuntu Linux and Windows 10 but I wouldn't count on Fedora or getting virtualization for VMware to work great except for one guest host. Ditch the HDD and replace it with an SSD and the technical could possibly rate this a four.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What color is this exactly? A silver top or black. The title says black but the pictures show silver.

I'd say a dark blue to blackish color. It's more black than anything else.

The specs say NO bluetooth.I can't find any other reviews regarding this issue.Does this mean I cant use my bluetooth headphones?

Yes that is correct. I was annoyed by this as well but you can add one in one of the USB 2.0 slots if compatible with Windows 8. With all of the other features, not a big deal and truthfully - most in this price range with these features do not have this anyway. It's typically those priced $399 an up which have integrated bluetooth, that's typically. I would just add one if it was me and you like the computer.

compatibility for usage in South America

Can we use this computer in Spanish?, with the info in Spanish? is it compatible to be used in South America, Colombia?
That has nothing to do with the computer but with Windows. Yes, Windows 8.1 can be set up for use in Spanish and at first use when turned on it will prompt for language and region (time settings). Are all apps in Spanish, that I do not know and it's unlikely but that's will likely be across the board with all PC computers.

can you play mindcraft on it

I suppose you could but I wouldn't recommend it. You really shouldn't attempt this with any Intel Celeron processor and check your games minimum and recommended requirements. I recommend a minimum of an Intel Core i5 for gaming truthfully and obviously, you'll get more memory and features as well.

What is the maximum screen resolution?

It's typical of other netbooks and ultraportables in its class at 720p approximately. I think it's just above that - maybe 1280x768 if I recall but with a VGA connector on the outside, it's not going to likely be 1080p and to be honest - most streaming content is typically delivered over 720p which is still considered HD. I would presume the HDMI port might allow one to drive it higher with the Intel HD graphics is an external monitor is connected but not with its touch display.

how many hours of battery life on this unit?

some folks felt the battery life was not so great
Please read my review. It's likely 3-4 hours as it has some nice features that drive the battery hard but they aren't as performance related as they are usability related. It's typically 3-4 hours with 5 max if everything was kept to a minimum and Windows services not needed were turned off (if you are a very advanced user and know which ones you can disable). This unit has standard DDR3 not DDR3L but at $249 with a touch screen and a decent Intel Celeron and SD (HC/XC slot) with USB 3.0 and Ethernet port (its hard to complain).

Battery life?

What's the average battery life after heavy and/or light use?
Please read my review for full details. Likely 9-12 hours depending on screen brightness and use of tablet versus keyboard and app/programs. Full details can be found on Acer's support website.
