You should get in a habit for doing this with all electronics you purchase, especially GoPro's since they are good at fixing bugs and adding new features with firmware updates!

After I did that, I started playing with this camera for the last week. It's a blast to film with, and with the proper settings you can really get some awesome footage! There are more advanced settings in-app, and basic settings on-cam. be sure to check out:
Linear FOV
Image Stabilization (if you are hand-holding this)
ProTune (and respective settings)

This is my first GoPro and I bought it to record 4k video at 30fps. The video quality is great! Unfortunately, after about 40 minutes of continuous recording at 4k 30fps the camera beeps and displays a message, "camera too hot shutting down." I was hoping I would be able to leave this camera unattended and trust that it would record until I turned it off. I think I will have to take this camera back to the store. It is a shame that this camera can't record long videos in 4k without overheating.

This was my first action camera purchase, and so far I have been very pleased with it. The videos are superb! So far I have mainly used it as drive cam, but plan on using it much more for other things. Depending on the setting, the 64 GB card gives you a lot of storage. For driving, I have it set for 720p and have been getting almost 4hrs of video. The only real downfall that I have seen with this camera,is that the battery life is very limited. It starts to suck battery power very quickly, especially if you are using the backscreen to set things up or view what you are recording. Its even worse when you turn on the WiFi . So that would be one of the star deductions I made. The other star deduction is I have not been able to connect to the GoPro Connect app to remotely use my camera from my phone, which adding to that it sucks the battery dry quickly, you can't even use the feature. And directions on connecting to the app are pretty limited, so its been frustrating at the least.

Hey dude.
Be sure to update to the latest GoPro firmware for your cam. (check the bottom of the official GoPro website). Updating the firmware may help solve your connection problem, and if not, then I would also suggest deleting and then re-downloading the app.

As for battery life: The Hero5 is actually the longest-lasting cam of the whole Hero family. (assuming you turn off all extra features like WiFi / Voice Command / Geo, etc). Lot's of videos on youtube showing this. 4hrs at 720p is incredible battery life, and I beleve that far exceeds what GoPro claims for this cam, so I don't think its really fair that you dock it a star for battery life just for that. Hope the firmware update helps you.

Which would you recommend for a first time GoPro purchase?
You can't go wrong with any of the GoPro cameras.
I personally like the Hero5 Session for its small form-factor and improvements over the Hero Session (especially the new Image Stabilization feature). But even the Hero Session is an awesome little cam.

- Electronic Image Stabilization (makes a world-of difference, especially if you are hand-holding this cam while filming)
- Much better image quality (due to a better sensor and a higher bit-rate)
- Voice Control (a feature to turn on if your gopro is ever mounted in a hard-to-reach place or if you want to have multiple GoPro control without a remote-control)
- More FOV / Resolution / FPS options
