Good Scanner for Family photos-Ok for photographer

This is a decent little scanner. It does a great job of saving/archiving family photos. Its very fast. The software prompts you to name each batch which helps keep things organized. Most importantly set up and use is very simple.
It has good construction and can quickly and easily be taken apart for storage/transport in its box. The software is simple and easy to use, It does have some advanced settings if you want them. It has three different modes for different scanning. The software lets you pick which mode pops up when you press the scan button on the scanner. 1st mode is Fastfoto which is for quicly scanning batches of photos. Its simple but limited to 300 or 600 dpi JPGs saved at ~60% quality. 2nd mode is Epson Scan which will scan batches but gives you a bit more control with more DPI settings, JPG/TIFF/PDF settings, and grey-scale/color settings. The 3rd mode is document scanning and will build you PDFs of scanned documents. This thing can scan a page in less then a second.
As a photographer the quality is good for family photos and will meet the needs of most people. The colors are accurate and contrast is good. For professional photography purposes the scan quality is decent. At 100% on a 1200/600/300 dpi tiffs there is noticeable blocking. Each 8x8 section of pixels is slightly different so there is a bit of a checker pattern in certain areas of contrast. Most scanners do this. My Nikon film scanner does this but its about 70% less noticeable at 100%. For most people this will be a non issue. For professional photographers they will notice it but they are in the business of making prints not scanning them. If they do make a scan its of film which this does not scan. So its probably a non issue for them unless they are restoring client photos. Still would like to see this minimized.
This is a review for the Epson FastFoto 640 that I received free of charge to do a beta test and review.
