If you have Amazon Prime you will have access to many TV episodes and Movies but there is also paid content available like new movies and some other TV content.

What's the difference between Amozon Fire Stick and Roku?

No you do not have to join Amazon Prime service for this to work however it does give you access to a lot of content on the device. You can use it to play games, or use apps like Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, Sling, Plex, and many others.
