The Gear S3 Frontier (non-LTE) is my first smartwatch purchase. I have held off purchasing one the past few years until I felt that smartwatches were developed enough to provide a seamless experience. I have had this watch for several weeks now, and it is a pleasure to use. My wife has had an apple watch for the past year (she loves it), but the frontier is much more suitable for me. I am a watch guy (I own several different style watches: Bulova, Movado, Oakley, Fossil, etc...) so finding a smartwatch that actually looks like a traditional watch is great. Now onto the details:
Pros: - As mentioned, the traditional round watch face looks fantastic and the screen resolution is great. I already have dozens of free watches faces installed to match whatever I am wearing for the day. Always On display is a nice option to have as well. - The rotating bezel is a breeze to use, and I like the tactile feel while rotating. Navigating through the app menus and within the apps is pretty simple. - I personally think the watch is sized perfectly (for my body type). I am 6' 1" and weigh 180 lbs, and the watch is ideal for my wrist. In fact, most of the watches I already own are larger than the gear s3. That being said, if you are 5' 6" and 130 lbs then this watch will most likely be too big for you (do your homework before buying any wearable). - Samsung Pay is fantastic. I love not needing to take out my wallet everywhere I go. I have used the watch to pay at 20-30 different locations and it has worked easily at each location. Seeing the loof on peoples faces when you pay with a watch is fun too. - I have used the fitness features several times so far (haven't tested out all of the fitness tools yet) and they have worked well. Step counting, burned calories, rep/set tracking has all recorded well. I don't know how precise the recordings are but they are at the very least a close approximation (which is good enough for me). - I have had several phone conversations on the watch with no problems. Speaker was clear and the people I was talking to thought I was doing so on my phone. Texting with SVoice also works well. There have been a few times where I had to repeat myself, but that is usually when I'm in a louder environment. - Battery life is better than expected. When I heard 4 day battery life, I assumed that would be with minimal use and everything turned off. Turns out that is a legit statement for regular use. When the always on display is off, I have been getting 4 days no problem with regular use (with gps on, bluetooth on, wifi on). When the watch is in Always On mode, it is between 2 and 3 days based on with watch face you have set. In a world where most of my portable electronics are being charged every night, having to charge this watch once or twice a week is a welcome change.
Cons: - So far the only con is app support. There are definitely great apps to use, but the selection is smaller in comparison to other operating systems. I would expect his to improve over time.
Personally, I'm not looking for my watch to replace my phone. I wanted a watch that will make interacting with other devices quicker and easier, while looking like a quality timepiece. Not having to keep taking my phone out of my pocket while at work, while driving, or while exercising is great. The gear S3 has done that in spades. It does everything I want a smartwatch to do, and it does those things well. You will not be disappointed in this watch.
