Having flown a DJI P3 Pro for almost two years several things about the updated P4 caught my attention:
1. 20MP 1" sensor
2. lens array that can be focused
3. variable apertures from 2.8-11
4. Improved flight times through higher capacity battery
The front, rear, sides and downward facing object avoidance system is icing on the cake.
Opening the box you find that the necessary parts are neatly packed in a reusable dense foam case with carrying handle and latch to keep it closed.
Updating firmware through DJI Assistant loaded on your PC or laptop took only minutes. While reading over the owners manual I charged the batteries having, bought a second battery along with the drone.
The next day I was ready for a short 1 battery test flight. After confirming Home Point I launched the P4P and it hovered at about 15' as if it were on a pole. My P3P cannot do as well. Though the tap to focus procedure is kind of pain being able to focus the camera is a good thing. photos in dying afternoon light looked fine as did the 4k and 1080P video. Second test flight was to check evening shooting abilities. Hello Crashed Ice Tour. From a safe distance the drone launched flew and landed without any issues and the photos and 1080P video looked very good considering the only lighting was street lighting and the flood lights used at Crashed Ice event.
Flight time was 15:11 when landed and motors off. Pretty good for using only 50% of the high capacity battery. After the batteries go through their break-in period I anticipate typical flight times in warmer weather to easily be in the 23-28 minute range depending on circumstance.
A great drone for any one interested in photography or videography who wants to explore new points of view.
There's a lot more to take into consideration with a flying camera before you even take it out of the case to fly starting with your FAA registration. Do it.
Then set about dealing with trying to not crash into utility wires, trees, buildings, more trees, unexpected wind gusts, keeping a watchful eye for territorial birds and clearing a flight plan if you're close enough to an airport to have to make the call.. Then there's local, county, state and federal park regulations.
Even with glitches along the way I believe the P4P is as good as it gets for an obtainable consumer drone that can deliver amazing photos and videos.
Put one on your bucket list. Quick, before DJI introduces the P5 :)
