HDD bracket FAQ
on June 1, 2017
Posted by: Ahmad
A lot of people asked/confused about the 2.5" Bracket and that it is not supplied with the laptop. That is not correct. The attached images show the two brackets and you only have to provide the HDD screws to fix you drive into these brackets.

Another Quad Core Ultrabook

I tried this laptop as I thought this is a good alternative to the expensive Dell XPS 15 for cheaper price. but cheap does not come without drawbacks and here they are:
-BUILD QUALITY:
Although made from aluminum, it is not the toughest laptop and sure does not rise to today standard set by (Apple and Dell XPS). It has a lot of flex which makes it lighter and that's an advantage for some, but for me having a little bit additional weight is OK if this will lead to better build quality (Sorry but I was always comparing it to my old TANK Lenovo Y50). My other point was the hinge, although it is better than the Flex5 that I tried as well, it was still wobbly when I used it on a train/bus and I can understand that this is 2 in 1 device but for me this wasn't a priority. Keyboard on the other hand is GREAT!!! beats everything from PC laptops and IMHO way better than the butterfly keys from Apple. Touchpad is ok.
-PERFORMANCE:
There was nothing to complain about considering the price range, but even If I went for the top of the line one (which wasn't available at BestBuy that time), there are still a lot of things that I wish they have offered. First having one memory module soldered on the motherboard will leave you with the option of adding one module which should not exceed 8GB as what I was told by Lenovo experts (16GB max) the XPS15 can go to 32GB with two modules up-gradable. Second there is only one option GPU which is 1050 with 2GB, they could have added at least 4GB option.
One more thing to add, I don't know why Lenovo went with 2133MHz memory speed in 2017 when almost all Quad Core laptops come with 2400MHz speed.
-CONNECTIONS:
There are only 2 standard USB3.0 ports and 1 USB C with 2x thunderbolt and that's it. if you are a creative content creator you will miss the SD card reader.
Bottom Line:
For me, I would pick a gaming laptop (BestBuy speciality!!!) over these two competitor (XPS15/YOGA720) any day, but that's just me. But if I was about to pick one of them, I would go for the XPS15 as for the extra $400 - $500 (from the 4K model) I will get:
-Way better build quality
-Better battery life (with 97WHr configuration)
-Best PC laptop touchpad
-4GB GTX1050 vs 2GB one.
-2400MHz memory speed vs 2133Mhz
-32GB maximum 2 and I repeat (2) up-gradable memory modules.
-Way better color accuracy display(4K configuration) for (Photographers/Videographers/Artists).
-Full size HDMI port
-SD Card reader (Photographer/Videographers) will appreciate for sure.
-You can have additional 2.5" drive bay if you purchased the 56WHr battery.
I still recommend this configuration since a lot of CRIPPLED Dual Core UGLY looking ultrabooks still sells for this price point.

Best value, great screen, and incredible battery.
By Ahmad
Briefly, I do 3D modelling/rendering and software development, I use laptops heavily and almost all day long.
I watched and read lots of reviews before going for this laptop and I can say that this is the best PC purchase I've ever made and here is why:
- SCREEN, IPS panel is day and night different than the previous TN panel, viewing angles are great, color accuracy is respectable and contrast ratio is amazing. DO NOT go for the cheaper $799 that comes with TN, plus the cheaper model does not come with PCIe SSD drive and 1050 not 1050Ti.
- SIZE and WEIGHT; not the lightest but it is portable, I used it once while I was commuting size is fine if you wanna use it on you lap on a train and I can't feel the weight of it in my backpack considering that I don't carry the charger anymore, and here comes my next point.
- BATTERY, I cannot believe that Quad Core laptop with dedicated GPU can last that much, of course NVIDIA optimus play a big part in this, but I literally hit 11 hours on a single charge with 50% brightness and WIFI on all the time. I surfed, downloaded couple apps and compiled using Android Studio and MS Visual Studio. If hardcore looks do not matter to you this is better than the business style XPS15, and for me XPS15 do not have the 2.5" bay for models that come with 97WHr battery.
Bottom line, this laptop will give you full day of battery life, if you carry it to your work and use it in realistic way not (25% brightness with WIFI off) or having to use Edge instead of chrome to save battery life. Just charge it at night and leave the brick at home.
- GPU; this has the 1050Ti which is faster than the 1050 in the cheaper model and way way faster than my last 860M in my Lenovo Y50. I render using CUDA a lot and I have a desktop with GTX1070, so this will be for light stuff and on the go and it is really good enough for my needs.
- CPU; here was my only concern, I really wanted Bestbuy to carry the 7700HQ just for having 8 threads vs the 4 threads in the 7300HQ, but since I do my heavy lifting on GPUs nowadays, I don't mind having the i5, plus it consumes less power and thus will give you little bit better battery life.
- HEAT & NOISE; The two fans are quiet, they produce less noise than my Macbook Air when the fans kicks in, and less than my old Lenovo Y50. Heat is quite good, it’s ice cool compared to the Y50 and to the MBA.
HERE IS WHAT I DID:
- I added 500GB 2.5" SSD EVO Samsung that I bought from Bestbuy for $149 a while ago, and now I have enough storage without having moving parts HDD that will consume more power from the battery.
- I installed 32GB (16X2) memory sticks (LOW PROFILE ONES) I tried the Patriot Viper with heat sink and they did not fit because they are too thick for the slots.
- I uninstalled all the bloatware from dell and the free subscription McAfee that comes with it, updated the windows and registered the laptop using Dell website (INTERNET EXPLORER ONLY). And I forgot to mention that it comes with 20GB 1Year dropbox subscription, and for me this was great news since I am a heavy dropbox user.
- Shoutout to Bestbuy! This configuration is cheaper than if you wanna get it online from Dell, I don’t know how! But they did it. Plus, for me having to go to a store and picking it up the same day is priceless!
GOOD:
Stellar battery life.
Great value.
Matt IPS screen is awesome.
1050Ti, great for this price point.
256GB PCIe SSD, great for this price point.
BAD:
Looks, not so great.
Keyboard, not the greatest but above average.
Touchpad not the best (I am a mouse user anyway).
Stock software, just get rid of it.
Finger print magnet.

2.5" SSD
May 28, 2017
Hi,
Mine came with bracket(two side plates) screwed in place, and actually did not come with screws that fix the SSD to the brackets so I had to use some of the extra screw that came with my desktop motherboard. Again the bracket is two plates already screwed in the 2.5" bay, unscrew them, screw the SSD to them and then screw the whole thing back to the bay.
Cheers!!!

Great Gaming Laptop for the money
By Maximus
Great bang for the buck gaming laptop. IPS Screen is way better than the horrible TN screen in the other version. This one has the 7300 HQ quad core processor and the 1050 TI Graphics card. Plays most games at high between 900 to 1080p. Has a 256 GB M.2 SSD.
The only issues i have, and one that will affect all those hoping to add a second Sata hard drive in the empty Sata Bay. Dell is not putting in the hard drive bracket by default, so i cannot add a second hard drive. This only has the m.2 drive and no bracket to add the second sata drive. They provide the mounting screws but no bracket.
Other than that issue, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others. I will take off 2 stars as i feel the hard drive bracket should have been included in. Cmon Dell this is 2017.

2.5" Bracket
May 28, 2017
The 2.5" bracket is basically the two plates screwed on the sides of the bay. Though you have to find hard drive screws to the plates (I used extras that came with my desktop case/motherboard).
Cheers!

Yes this is more RAM
June 3, 2017
Yes this is more RAM this laptop support up-to 32GB Maximum memory, so I installed 2x 16GB (Pacific Sun) these are the only ones that I found with low profile of course they should be 2400MHz and 260PIN SODIMM. I used Patriot Viper and they did not fit since they have heat sink and this causes thick profile. As for the SSD, this is Samsung EVO that I bought for my old laptop from BESTBUY for $149 (it was on sale at that time). I think BESTBUY still have some deals one them you have to check this link.

This laptop have the longest battery life among all gaming laptops and I did not wanna ruin this with moving parts HDD :)

ARCH LINUX WITH THIS BEAST
August 8, 2017
I have been running Arch Linux on this laptop for over a month now and I wanted to share my experience. I first tried Unbuntu and Mint they both worked fine but they ate up the battery life really quick, I installed lpt package and it did not improve the battery life by much. I then decided to build my own linux (If you wanna go simple just install Antergos and choose GNOM and you will get the same results).
I get now around 12 hours of battery life (100% brightness) and 16 hours (50% brightness) and that's wifi on and my current day-to-day thing now is I am taking online courses so it involves a lot of video streaming.
Things to do:
- Disable AHCI on the bios for smoother dual boot with Windows 10 (if you wanna keep it :)).
- Windows might not boot on SATA (after disabling AHCI) but this is easy fix. I will provide the solution for people want to do it.
- Choose your distro (I went with arch and GNOM) I highly recommend Antergos (Arch Derrived) and it is rolling release as well so YES it is better than ubuntu.
- Install Bumblebee (NVIDIA optimus for linux) if you wanna use your discreet GPU once in a while.
- Install yaourt using (sudo pacman -Syy yaourt) and then this will be you package manager. If you go with Antergos yaourt is installed by default.
- start choosing from thousands of packages from AUR, use (yaourt -Qs <keyword>) for searching and (yaourt -S <package_name>) for installation.
Attached pictures:
- GNOM desktop environment.
- neofetch, shows the current specs after I upgraded the memory and drives.
- sensors, shows the system temperatures. I have never experienced over-heating with Linux.
- power, shows battery life from full charge, WIFI on and 100% brightness.
BTW when I installed ubuntu I was getting around

Is the BIOS locked down to stop Linux instal like the Lenovo Yoga 710 2-in1 Signature Edition? Is the SSD locked in a proprietary RAID-0 mode that Linux doesn't support? Can BIOS be set to AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) mode for the SSD?

I don't know if this answer will help, but I tried both Kubuntu and Ubuntu on it, and when I used Live CD to try them they worked fine and even the WIFI worked somehow. although when I installed Ubuntu, I could not configure the WIFI and there was no additional drivers that I could enable. Plus when I wanted to try the ones in the Live CD pools folder they did not work. I am pretty sure someone will find a way to make it work but I did not have USB to RJ45 adapter to get me connected to the internet so I stopped trying. I have no idea about the AHCI but I thought I can share my experience.

How long does the battery last due to WIFI browsing with screen on full brightness and the high performance power plan?

I tried mine with full brightness, WIFI on, and used chrome for browsing and I got around 4.5 hours, which is still great. This is a real life test not what manufacturers advertise for (Min Brightness, WIFI off mostly, and using Microsoft Edge instead of chrome). Although, I was not on a high performance power plan and that's because when I compile programs using (Visual Studio or Android Studio) or render 3D images, I am always plugged in anyways.

Can I add more memory? If yes, which memory do you recommend?

I put on mine 32GB (16GB x 2) 2400MHz speed. Please note that you have to pick low profile SODIMM 260 pin, I tried the Patriot Viper and they did not fit due to the thick profile caused by the heat sinks.
