very good package with one compromise

I have been pleasantly surprised about the looks, overall quality and performance of the machine. granted, I have been using it only for a day, but I have tested quite a few machines lately that I think I could chip in my 2 cents. Biggest plus of this machine, is its unassuming looks. I bet average people wont guess it is a gaming laptop (besides the red marked WASD keys), the new omen design is quite nice. I particularly like the X-diamond back of the display, and the perforated bottom panel (looks to me like borrowed from the more expensive Zbook Studio design). the keyboard is nice, yet the trackpad texture is say an acquired taste but that most people will adjust to. Out of the box, the 8GB ram might be a limit to some people, specially middle to heavy gamers, but the machine is easy to upgrade and being only one dim populated, makes it cheaper to upgrade. from experience, it just takes 5-10 minutes to upgrade to 32GB ram, a standard screwdriver and some care with a plastic pick to pry open the bottom panel. From the other BestBuy gaming, I see BestBuy tends to save money on giving you only a spinning disk, well Ithink the two drives in this machine but with 8GB ram is a better deal than more memory and a spinning disk.
The machine is relatively quiet under load, yet BattleField 1 reached 95 celcius peak, average 86, but I think it is a decent compromise.
Other plus, HP update software is easy to use, and bloatware (at least things loaded at start-up) are limited. Acer VX15 had more bloatware and Acer website is quite primitive in comparison.
Other big plus to me, compared to say old Omen, and Acer cheap options is the mini-display port. the main benefit, is to be able to use a 4K external monitor at 60Hz. don't get me wrong, the 1050Ti will never play at 4k, but say for photo/video editing, it is quite a decent card and being able to pull a color accurate panel allows the machine to be an all in one machine.

extremely hot; needs upgrades

I have been gaming on this laptop for three days now. on battlefield 1 it easily reaches 98 Celsius after 15 minutes of gameplay. for long-term durability I will not recommend this product. if you were planning to buy extended warranty anyway, you might be OK, but I don't think this is a machine I would like to have out of warranty. maybe an obvious thing to say, but I don't understand why there are no vents exactly beneath the fans on the bottom panel. the position, size and amount of vents in the bottom panel (where cold air would come in) are ridicously small for a machine with this heat dissipation needs.
BestBuy model as only a spinning disk, you would likely want/need to upgrade to SSD or M2 SSD.
on the positive, the screen is really nice, keyboard is decent and portability for a 17 inches computer is great.

Excellent laptop for specs, no pen included.
By FatherOfDragon from Lynnwood, WA
Everything great! Touchpad is smooth, and supported with Precision touchpad with all the gestures, gorgeous 4K screen but not bright enough when outside, keyboard is top notch with blacklit lighting. Fingerprint is very responsive. Not to mention, this laptop is 2 in 1, acting like regular laptop or a tablet as you desire. I felt weird that the box included a small pen box, but there was no pen inside?! I kind of disappointed about it. The CPU is quad code and 8 threads, better than 2 cores U series out there. However, for some reason, I noticed this chip doesn't support Turbo Boost, so the CPU stays max at 2.8 Ghz, It is kind of letdown to me. But it makes battery last longer though. Fan runs quite after adjusting fan setting in BIOS to balanced.

I second your comment on the CPU turbo.
June 27, 2017
I think the lenovo response relates to the one core turbo, but this CPUs should turbo all four cores to about 3.3-3.5. I tried throttle stop software, and it clearly says Turbo is disabled out of the box.

The Best Ultrabook Under $1,500!!!
By AndroidPurity
I bought this computer from Lenovo's website directly about 4 weeks ago. As soon as Lenovo announced this laptop at MWC and i saw the specs and the price point, then I knew it was going to be worth the wait until it was released in April.
Overall I was right, now that i have had this lap top a few weeks I absolutely love it! I will go over each category so everyone looking at this laptop can get an idea of how amazing this laptop is for the price.
Build Quality: 10/10
The entire laptop structure is all aluminium. The back of the lid, the bottom, and the inside. The only thing not aluminium are the keys, but the keys still look and feel very premium. The aluminium is also pretty thick, when pressing on the keyboard area or the lid, then there is barely any flexing. Only thing I would change is wish there was no gap or less gap between the lid and base when it is folded back in tablet mode. But that is a very minor thing. So overall build quality is very premium!
Performance: 10/10
First let me make sure you all understand a couple things. This is the FIRST 2 in 1 laptop ever with a quad core processor. This is also the FIRST 2 in 1 laptop ever with a 10 series (1050) Nvidia GPU. So this is a ground breaking laptop for the market like no other laptop. With that out of the way, with the combination of the new quad core i7700hq, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, and a Nvidia 1050 GPU, this thing flies!!! I have had multiple chrome tabs open, and multiple applications open, and while playing a video at 4K, and I never saw any frame drops or freezing or stuttering. This machine is very powerful! The fans will of course kick on under moderate or heavy loads, but I have not found the fans to be loud at all. Just a very light swish noise. Barely noticeable at all.
Graphics: 8/10
This is the 1 area I have not really tested. I have not tested any games but it definitely plays 4K videos very smooth. I am not really a gamer on computers, I got this with the graphics so I can edit 4K video in the near future. If you would like to know how the graphics perform on this then just watch any graphics review of the Dell XPS 15 because it has the same processor and same graphics card. So the gaming and graphics performance of this Yoga 720 should be nearly identical to the XPS 15. My only critque of the graphics would be I wish it had 4GB of RAM for the 1050 graphics card (like the Dell XPS 15 has) instead of 2GB RAM. Thats why I knocked ot down to 8/10. BUT that shouldn't affect editing 4K video. This should still be very smooth if you do video editing or 3D rendering. I suspect the only thing that it should effect is very high graphics games (tomb raider, witcher 3, ect), they will maybe be just 2-4 FPS less than the Dell XPS 15 when gaming. So not a huge deal if you aren't a frequent computer gamer.
Display: 9/10
This is a 3840 x 2160 (4K) display. The colors are very accurate. Nothing looks washed out and nothing looks over saturated. The display is very colorful. So it is great for watching 4K videos/movies, and really good for photo editing, and really good for 4K video editing. I wish it was a bit more saturated with color, but that is more of a personal preference.
Keyboard/Track Pad: 9/10
The keyboard is very good! The keys have a shallow travel but not too shallow. Right in that sweet spot I think. There is pretty good tactile feedback with just very light sounding clicks. It is a joy to type on. Some people reported issues with the trackpad having issues. Like it just stops responding until you lift your finger and touch it again. But I have not experienced that on mine. So either that was just a few affected or it was fixed with driver updates earlier. I did experience click and drag not work correctly a couple times, but since this is a Microsoft Precision trackpad driver I am sure any remaining kinks will get worked out very soon. Also this has a finger print sensor to log into Windows with. It has worked flawless every single time!
Battery 8/10
It contains a 72whr battery. So a pretty good size! However since it is a quad core, with discrete graphics, and with a 4K display, then battery times can vary widely if you're doing gaming, rendering, or video editing. According to Windows battery report I have been averaging 5 hours and 36 minutes of screen time which was done with browsing, and media consumption. But when youre doing anything with graphics expect about half that. Overall 5 hours 35 minutes for a 4K display is pretty good!
Input/Output: 8/10
This has 1 USB 3.1 Type C port which also has Thunderbolt 3 support! However I been informed by Lenovo tech support it only has 2 lanes. So only 20GB per second total. The biggest impact that will have means you will only be able to run one 4K external monitor off it, instead of two. That was dsiappointing and I am not sure why Lenovo did that when this has a quad core processor could have handled 4 lanes. Anyways this also has 2 USB type A ports that are 3.0. So that is nice they don't waste space with any old 2.0 ports. Also good because you won't need to use any dongles/adapaters during the market transition to all USB Type c eventually. Having both Type A and C ports, the best of borth worlds! There is no HDMI or Display port, but to me this is okay because the Thunderbolt 3 port can be used as a display port, so no big deal. Also a little dissapointing there is no SD Card slot.
Speakers: 8/10
These are really great speakers that also have Dolby Atmos too. So the speakers are very clear, crisp, and loud! I never noticed any distorition. The only issue I have with them is they are downward facing in laptop mode. They also could use a bit more bass. Still overall they are way better than most laptop speakers.
SUMMARY: So there is only 3 cons about this laptop, the speakers are downward facing instead of upward, the GPU has 2GB instead of 4GB, and the Thunderbolt 3 port has 2 lanes instead of 4. So overall this laptop is really good in every category. There is not 1 aspect of this laptop that sucks or is just okay. So that makes this laptop excellent considering every aspect is really good.
If you compare this Lenovo Yoga 720 to the Dell XPS 15, the specs are nearly identical. Both have a premium build (Lenovo more premium because more aluminium), both have same processor, both have same amount of DDR4 RAM, both have same size PCIe SSD, both have same GPU, and both have 4K resolution displays. The only 3 things the Dell XPS 15 has better is the display has slightly more color range, the battery life is about 20% better, and it has 2GB more of RAM for the GPU. But on the other hand the Lenovo Yoga 720 has a way better webcam cause its better quality and the Lenovo actually has its webcam at the top of the display... instead of at the bottom of the display looking up your nose like the XPS 15 webcam. Also the Lenovo has a little better speakers as well. So considing the Lenovo Yoga 720 and Dell XPS 15 have nearly identical specs with only a couple minor differences, then clearly the Lenovo Yoga 720 is a wayyyy better deal because it is only $1,399 and the XPS 15 with the same specs is $1,999. So almost the same thing for $600 LESS.
So if youre comparing the XPS 15 and Lenovo Yoga 720, and you want the best deal, then this is by far the better deal for a powerful and beautiful laptop! Also even if money isn't an option and you use your webcam regularly, then I recommend this Yoga 720 over the XPS 15 too.

subtle differences vs the xps 15
June 27, 2017
while I think the Yoga 720 has its advantages, it is also useful to remind the reader a few differences, 1) it is not true the same size of DRAM at least not on maximum memory, XPS 32, Yoga 24gb for someone looking for a multi-year investment that could be relevant; 2) throttling, out of the box, the yoga 720 throttles at 2.8Ghz, XPS will sustain 3.2-3.5; 3) don't underestimate the difference between 2gb and 4gb of memory, it makes a significant difference in editing 1080p and 4k video, and of course in gaming.

good but not best 2-in-1
June 27, 2017
the 15 inches makes it extremely impractical to use as "tablet", the non-receding keyboard is a dealbreaker to me. I think both Lenovo's P40 and Surface Books are clearly better. of course if you need quad-core power and still pseudo-tablet, this is basically the only option.

good potential hindered by some lenovo decisions
By danrdz77
on paper it looks as a great more versatile alternative to the very popular XPS 15 and marginally cheaper. For students or more media consumers than creators the Yoga 720 should be a great option to take notes and to watch videos.
But there a few glitches that pushed me to return it; 1) out of the box, the cpu's turbo is disabled so when pushed it will coast at around 2.8Ghz instead of more common 3.3-3.5Ghz. while fixing this was a easy "hack", I cannot help but wonder what is lenovo hiding behind such decision? insufficient cooling; long life concerns; 2) decision to limit ram to 24gb (one 8gb soldered) one available slot; concerns for "future proof"; 3) the whole device looks quite fragile/delicate, not something that will last if continously put in yoga mode over normal nonperfect surfaces; in fact, my unit had a tiny dent in a hinge out of the box. 4) on a related matter, the keyboard remains exposed while in yoga mode; it will be better/safer the X1 Yoga or P40 Yoga trick of receding the keyboard while in yoga. 5) at this price point, the wacom pen should be included and not an additional purchase. 5) no video output, not even display port or hdmi, you need dongls with the thunderbolt 3; why? if this is meant for media consumption.

follow up useful.
June 28, 2017
Many thanks Lenovo expert. your memory clarification makes my case even better, 16GB Ram is bare minimum nowadays for enthusiast let alone professional use. it is a shame lenovo decided to soldered on one of the modules; even more if it iss true that the one slot can only take a 8GB (I returned mine already to BestBuy) but I would bet that if I install a 16gb module (to make it 16+8) it will work). it is well reported on you tube reviewers that the Yoga 720 coasts at around 2.8Ghz if say you push something to use 100% of the CPU for more than a minute. the XPS 13 coast at around 3.3 GHz instead. there is something either thermal limits or BIOS in the Yoga 720 that is blocking a faster speed. I personally got 2.7-2.8Ghz average if I were to push it. again, being Intel specs what they are, it is a fact for me, that the Yoga 720 is slower than similarly equipped laptops with the same CPU. On the keyboard, I would really prefer an X1 Yoga or P40 Yoga (I have used the P40 for long time) type of system in which the keyboard not only becomes inactive but also hidden/receded. It is not comfortable to hold the 720 with the keyboard extended (even if inactive).
on a 15 in laptop, there is no excuse not to include either a display port or a hdmi (of course, you are trying to pull "an Apple").
thanks again.

Excellent gaming laptop with a few annoying issues
By Anonymous
I'm not going to go in great detail with a review about the obvious as you can simply read others reviews about this laptop all over the internet. I will say one thing about this laptop - it's a powerhouse. It can handle anything that you throw at it at 80+ fps with everything maxed out.
Like I said above, rather than write a full review, I'm going to point out some "what you gotta do's" when you buy this as well as point out some possible "deal breakers."
**To the people who are thinking about purchasing this or already have it and are noobs - pay close attention to the following...
There are 3 things that you want to do with this as soon as you buy it.
1. Replace the 1TB hard drive. It' will get rid of the lag that you will hear people complaining about that have this model and the previous 6RF model.
2. Do a fresh install of Windows 10. Wipe all of the MSI junk and bloatware off of this laptop. You're stupid if you don't. Sorry to be harsh but if you'd prefer to keep the MSI junk just re-download it after you preform a fresh install. You'll thank me later.
3. Undervolt the CPU. As with most gaming laptops, the CPU is fed too much unnecessary power and causes temps to jump into the mid 90's while gaming. If you think this is OK then you're nuts. Simply go on youtube and search how to undervolt the i7 7700hq and download either program and undervolt the core by 0.100 volts. You'll notice that the CPU never goes over 85 celsius.
Also, for those that want to know - these are the temps that I'm getting after doing everything mentioned above.
Idle GPU(nvidia) - 50 celsius
Idle CPU - 45 celsius(down from 55-60 celsius before undervolting)
Gaming GPU(nvidia) - 85 celsius playing GTA 5
Gaming CPU - 82 celsius playing GTA 5(down from 95 degrees)
**Also, if you've ever heard of coil whining, be prepared to become it's best friend owning this laptop. There's an ambient yet sometimes annoying whining noise coming from the i7 kaby lake CPU when you have the power setting set to high performance. Set it to balanced to reduce the noise. Also, after undervolting it will also reduce the noise a little more so that you won't hear it anymore unless you try to hear it, if that makes any sense.
Any questions, reply to my review and I'll try to help out.

irresponsible advice; do not open the computer
June 28, 2017
the person posting means well I am sure, but double check on MSI laptops if you open the computer (to replace the disk as he.she sugguest) you will void your warranty and of course, BestBuy might not take it back even during the return period.

Slow machine has video driver issues
By BBPro
I purchased this machine to use with high end Photoshop work.
I expected that this machine would be fast, but since it does not have a solid state drive, its boot up was slow. Also it lagged when switching between applications. I expected much faster response times with its new Intel 7th gen i7 processor.
The most glaring issue is a known NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics processor and this ROG machine. When booting up the ROG machine, the NVIDIA processor is STUCK on Maximum screen brightness! There is NO WAY to turn the screen brightness down. I did some research online and found that yes, this is a known problem with this machine and users have to downgrade to old versions of Microsoft WHCL drivers. After downgrading to the specified WHCL driver, the ROG machine that screen brightness was indeed adjustable, but the brightness output on screen would then flicker at times. I used to do video driver QA when I was employed in Silicon Valley so I have quite a bit of experience in video driver matters. I cannot recommend this machine due to the video issues. I purchased an MSI G373VR 7RF Stealth Pro instead, which I am very happy with even though it has an older NVIDIA 1060 graphics card.

I agree with the slow boot
July 14, 2017
I share the disappointment of a machine of this raw power being crippled by an spinning disk; who knows, maybe this store clientele is not as picky with boot speeds and overall launching speed but I would guess that anyone who knows what the 1070 can do, would know how limiting a spinning disk is.
I must say that I was a bit surprised you went for the MSI if it were from this store, as I understand that has a TN panel (not IPS) and that cannot be good for photography, no?
