Good but not great

These buds seem like a step back from some of the better performing models. While they are still very good ear buds, they don't match the performance in sound quality or noise cancelling of other Jabra models. The one area where they seem to have improved is in fit and comfort. While the overall profile of the buds doesn't seem to have changed much, they do fit more securely in my ears and are less likely to be knocked loose with an accidental brush. They do work well at connecting to multiple devices at once. I tested these with connections to my phone and the streaming device for my tv. I could even leave my phone in another room and remain connected to it while I listened to content on the tv in my home gym. It was a bit ambiguous which device was being controlled by the ear bud buttons until I established which one I wanted to listen to. With both devices paused, pressing the play button on the buds started the music on my phone when I wanted to listen to the tv. But if the tv was already playing, then the buds would default to controlling the active device. The buds will automatically pause playback when one is removed from your ear, but unlike other models, playback does not automatically resume when you put the bud back in. You have to actively restart playback. So overall, really good design, but there are models with better sound quality and noise cancelling if that's primarily what you're after.

transportable gaming
on December 15, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
This isn't really a portable gaming platform, in the sense that you would be gaming on the go. More like, it's a transportable gaming platform, in the sense that you can take it different places to game, easier than you could a desktop rig. The thing that makes it so good, its giant 18 inch screen, also hampers your ability to use this anywhere other than on top of a stable surface that is not your lap. The screen itself is quite good. Bright, sharp, mostly non-reflective, with good color reproduction and dark blacks. Dell makes good use of the space with thin bezels around the edge of the screen. That also provides plenty of surface in front of the screen for a generously-sized keyboard and full number pad and a large touchpad. However, the base of the laptop also extends behind the screen, making the overall size of the machine larger than the 18" screen would necessitate. It's also not a very light laptop. Portable, sure, but not necessarily something you want to carry between classes or airport gates. The power brick itself is quite massive and not something you want to be having to plug in on the go. Some additional area in front of the screen is used for grates that facilitate airflow and speaker performance. During non-gaming use, I hardly ever heard the fans kick on, and they were fairly quiet when they did. Sound reproduction was excellent, so you don't really need external speakers unless you really crave a lot of low-end volume. Keyboard feel is smooth and responsive, with wide spacing to minimize accidental keystrokes. Not clicky, though, so if you want clicky keys you need to pick the model with the mechanical keyboard. Customization options for the rgb lighting is sufficient, though the app to manage it could be more intuitive and easy to use. Touchpad performance is acceptable, though clicking takes more effort than I would like. Overall, this is an outstanding gaming laptop, just not one you're going to be using on the go.

luxury headphones
on November 25, 2023

Though the sound is really good, it may be more about the materials and the craftsmanship with these headphones. There's just something intangible about a really well made piece of gear, and these headphones have that something. At a certain level, even an audiophile isn't going to be able to tell much difference between high-end speakers, but these headphones just feel better. I was skeptical about the purple color at first, but it's a subtle shade of purple, and it's set off well by the gold metal. These also feel quite substantial. They're mush heavier than your standard pair of plastic headphones, and the swivels on the earpieces make them fit just right. Unlike most over-ear models, the cups go completely around my ears and fit securely against my head. They are a bit snug, but not so snug that they become uncomfortable. I miss having touch controls a bit, but at least you don't have to worry about accidentally activating something when you brush up against them. I also don't find myself having to readjust these much at all. The sound quality is as good as you would expect from high-end headphones, and the noise cancelling works well too. A couple of minor quibbles: When you turn them on and they pair, the chimes that indicate both of those things are too loud, and there doesn't appear to be any way to turn that volume down. The app is also pretty limited from a customization/equalization standpoint. Other brands give you more ability to tailor the sound exactly to your liking.

Good size and options
on November 15, 2023

While this isn't going to be anyone's idea of a gourmet coffee maker, it does hit a sweet spot for size and the ability to brew either single-serve cups or full pots of coffee. I personally prefer having a warming plate under a glass carafe rather than just an insulated carafe so a brewed pot will stay warm longer. However, this pot is small enough that you might not need it to stay warm that long. It does have a compact size and shape so you will be able to fit it under most kitchen cabinets, though you do need access to the top to add water. The window for viewing the water level in the reservoir is only visible from one side, so you will need to orient it so you can see that gauge. It's nice that it comes with both a reusable strainer for drip coffee and a reusable pod for single serve, so you can get by without buying filters or Kcups. The attachments for changing between drip coffee and coffee pods is easy to swap out, but it can be difficult getting a used Kcup out of the holder. It also has a flip-down tray, so you can position your mug closer to the spout and off the heating surface when making a single cup of coffee.

Doesn't...quite...fit
on October 23, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
This is plenty serviceable as a game controller. Buttons and joysticks are responsive and comfortable. It syncs up quickly with the phone and there is zero lag to the game response. It's annoying but understandable that you have to turn on each half separately, but they conveniently slot together when not in use both to save space and facilitate charging. When they're joined up, they make an electrical connection so you can charge both halves with one plug. It charged fairly quickly and I had no issue with running out of power. So as long as you have the right size phone, this makes a great gaming accessory. On the other hand, if you have an iPhone 14 pro in an Apple silicon case, it's not going to fit so well. If you wedge the phone into the clip on the left side, you can make it work, but it won't feel quite secure, just a teeny bit off. It's mostly the camera lens bump that creates the problem. If it wasn't for that additional thickness, it would work fine. Ironically, it comes with two different sized sets of pads, so if your phone is too *thin*, you can make it fit better. I obviously did not try or need to use those. So I made it work, and it functions great, it just doesn't fit quite right.

The Detect Pro robot vacuum is powered by 3 deep-cleaning technologies that enable the robot to maximize performance by sensing mess level, floor type, and edges & corners. DirtDetect sees even the hidden debris and automatically increases suction and cleaning passes to remove the mess on carpets and hardfloors. Now with NeverStuck technology, this robot will navigate around obstacles AND lift itself up and over thresholds and onto thick carpets. Not only can the robot deep clean, but you also do not have to worry about it getting stuck. Detect Pro finishes the cleaning mission every time and with each clean will empty itself into its bagless base that contains a HEPA Anti-Allergen Seal trapping dust & allergens inside. The odor neutralizer technology will also ensure the odor is trapped in the base for a fresher smelling home and making it the ultimate end to end solution for pet hair pick up.

Convenient, but not that smart
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
I have used and been disappointed in various ways with several different brands of robot vacs. This shark is better in some ways but worse in others. The first good thing is that it runs well without getting stuck nearly as much. One brand in particular used to habitually get stuck in certain areas, but this one has been mostly jam-free. However, while the other ones would let you know they were stuck with a notification, this one just sat there until I happened to notice it wasn't on the base. It also seems to get around cat toys much better. I haven't had a single one get stuck in the roller or a wheel well yet. And for a self-cleaning model, the big advantage is that you don't have to buy vacuum bags for the base. It has a container you can empty like most upright or stick vacs now have. Now, for the drawbacks. While it did an excellent job of mapping the basement, you can't designate areas to be cleaned on different schedules. Oh, you can add all the rooms and areas you want to the map, but they are useless for scheduling. There is one area that needs to be cleaned everyday, but the whole floor doesn't need to be cleaned everyday. But with this "smart" vac, it's all or nothing. It also seems to ignore "no-go" areas that you create on the map. I don't want it running into the cat food dispenser everyday, but it does, whether it's in a no-go area or not. If you're not worried about the vacuum running into stuff and you need to clean everything every time it runs, then this could be the vacuum for you. Otherwise, you might want to look for something smarter.

BYO (high wattage) charging brick
on October 6, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
I used my old theragun so much, I completely wore out one of the attachments. This new one is a step up in several ways, some of them useless. One thing that I really, really like is the heated tip. It doesn't put out a ton of heat, and you need to move it around more slowly to feel the heat, and it needs to be on bare skin to feel the heat, but it does add a lot to the percussive massage. There is also a cold tip available, but you have to buy that separately, so I haven't tried it. I think I would get more out of the heat than the cold anyway. This new model also does away with the swappable rechargeable battery. It's not that big of a deal to just plug in the gun rather than the battery charger, so I don't think you're losing much that way. In a typical session, which I'm estimating at around ten minutes or so, with the heat going (but not the -IMO useless- LED lights), I'm only using 30-35% of the charge. The display helpfully shows you the battery level while charging, but not while using. You also can no longer change the angle of the gun, but I honestly never did that with the old one. The new model has more fine tuning of the speed, and you can also adjust the level of heat, but unless the heat is on high, I really can't feel it that much. The display can also show you how hard you're applying pressure. When used in combination with the app, it will tell you whether you're pressing too hard, too little, or "optimal." The controls on the gun are sufficiently intuitive, though it took me a few minutes of fooling around with it until I got it down. The app is much less useful to me. I have a routine that I like to use, and unless I try to build that routine in the app, it's not going to follow what I want to do. Maybe if you've never used a massage gun and need to be shown the proper technique, it could be useful. It is easier to directly modify the speed, heat, and light in the app, but it's not worth carrying my phone into the gym room for that slightly improved functionality. One last thing about charging: you need your own high wattage charging brick. The cable it comes with has an adapter to use either USB A or C as an input, but when I plugged it into a low wattage USB A port, it not only did not charge (though the status showed as charging), it actually *lost* battery level. When I plugged into a higher wattage USB C brick, it charged fine, though. Honestly, I would recommend upgrading to this model just for the heated tip, but there are a lot of other bells and whistles that are essentially useless for my purposes.

best workout buds
on September 26, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
I'm picky about ear buds, and I've tried a lot of them, so five stars to me really means something. These are, hands down, the best ear buds I've used to work out in. Yes, I have some higher end ones that aren't really designed for workouts, but even against those, the sound quality and noise cancellation on these Jabras holds up. When you combine that with the water (sweat) resistance and the stability in your ears while moving around, it's an unbeatable workout combo. If there's one nit to pick, it's that I don't necessarily want to pause my program when I take out one bud to wipe some sweat away, but even that feature will seem like a large positive to some users. And it doesn't just pause your music (or TV show if they're linked to your Apple TV) when you take out one bud. It also switches the other bud to ambient sound pass-through because it assumes you might be taking out one bud to hear what's going on. Then it switches back to noise-cancelling when you put the bud back in. And make no mistake, you won't hear what's going on around you when these are in and noise cancelling is turned on. It's like the floor fan doesn't even exist, let alone is blowing air past you on high. It blocked out all but the highest register of sound coming from the rowing machine. Other than the sound coming through the buds, the loudest noise was my own breathing. You know how when you're snorkeling, the water mutes everything and makes your breathing sound loud in your own ears? That's what it was like. The sound was great right out of the box. Good response across the entire dynamic range, and plenty of volume on the low end, which can make or break ear buds in my opinion. Completely stable in your ears during any range of motion I encountered, and very comfortable. These would be perfectly fine as your everyday set of buds, but you can't beat them for working out in.

lightweight, easy cleaning, smoke-free
on September 4, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
This is definitely my go-to for quick indoor grilling. Don't want to fire up the propane grill outdoors? Don't want to mess around with charcoal? This will cook your meat just as well, or maybe even better with less mess. It was easy to set up and use right away. The grill will fit six large burgers with no problem, and it will even toast your buns afterward. There was no smoke to worry about, so no need to use it under a vent hood. It also cleaned up super easy - just rinse and dry. I also used the griddle for ham and cheese sandwiches, frying with mayo rather than butter, and at a lower temperature than grilling burgers. I made four sandwiches, but I could have fit six on the griddle. The heat was nice and even, with no hot spots or concerns about swapping the locations on the griddle so they would finish at the same time. I even lowered the lid at the end to trap in some heat and melt the cheese better. The griddle, like the grill, is non-stick, so cleanup required nothing more than a wipe with a paper towel. The heat can be raised to 500F if you really need to sear something. There's no fan like there is with an air fryer or convection oven, so operation is noise-free. The hood is dishwasher-safe, so you can throw it in the dishwasher if you get a lot of grease spatter. You can also store it upright to save shelf or counter space. It does require some preheat time, and the dial isn't exactly precise when selecting a temperature, but it's still going to be more precise than using an outdoor grill. This should be an essential appliance in every kitchen.

Better than a blow dryer
on August 26, 2023
Posted by: bradcon
Overall, this is a solid styling tool. I've used it in both the wet hair mode and the dry hair mode on my thinner, slightly less than shoulder-length hair. I first used it in dry hair mode to see if it would smooth my hair and remove any frizz on a non-wash morning. When using the dry hair mode, it actually did get rid of any second day frizz. I did not use any hair care products when using it in the dry hair mode. I have naturally straight hair, so did not really create any curl or bounce, but it did extend my previous day's style each morning when I didn't wash my hair. There is only one setting for dry hair mode, and it does take a moment to warm up, so pay attention to the lights as indicated in the instructions. Don't try to use it until it’s fully heated when in dry hair mode, or you will not achieve smooth, frizz-free results. I also tried it in wet hair mode, which promises wet to dry styling volumizing, and no heat damage. It left my hair very bouncy and shiny and very soft; it felt better than any salon blowout. So, I would definitely recommend the SmoothStyle. When using it in wet hair mode, I noticed much more volume versus standard blow drying. I did use styling product (specifically a dollop of leave-in conditioner, palm, and a few sprays of heat protection) when using it in the wet hair mode. It worked very well to both dry and style my hair, while polishing and leaving my hair styled. It dried my hair fast, and there was no frizz. When using in the wet hair mode, I selected the highest heat setting to start and then went down to the second heat setting, and both worked well. The lowest heat setting did not seem to get the frizz out as well for my particular hairstyle, when in the wet hair mode. When using it in wet hair mode, it is recommended to section off your hair, and I found that advice to be correct. I used a large clip and just pulled out each section, one at a time starting from the bottom and back and working my way to the top and front. Then when I was done with all the sections, I flipped my hair over as recommended, and gave one final brush through from the bottom to the top or back to the front, depending on your hairstyle. Following those instructions gave me the most volume and wave in my everyday hair style. The only con is that the unit itself is quite large and fairly heavy, and therefore a little bit difficult to manipulate. The extra cool touch handle on the top of the unit did help with that somewhat, but it is still quite heavy.

Does the Sony 1000XM3 InEar have it's own volume control? I need to amplify my listening, while my wife listens to the normal TV volume. I have a pair of the Sony 1000XM# over the Ear Head Phones and of course they DO have volume control. Thanks.

No, the on-ear controls only control playback; you have to control the volume on the device you're connected to.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Can it use the same SSID as my TWC modem?

It will "clone" your SSID by adding a suffix to it, but it won't let you use the identical SSID. If you want to extend a network that way, you need to go with a mesh network.
