Good, but maybe ready for an update already

There are a lot of advantages to the Android TV OS, but some of the features need a little more polish. Right out of the box, setup was easy because I could use my existing Google account. I didn't even need to setup voice recognition - which caused its own problems. Trying to search using voice within apps was not working until I tried using the Google Assistant, at which point I was prompted to pair the remote using Bluetooth for voice commands to work. Had I not short-circuited that step by porting over my settings, I might have avoided the initial search issues. Along with the Google account transfer came some, but not all, of my passwords. I wouldn't necessarily expect everything to come over because some of that depends on the app developer, but I would have expected YouTube TV to already have my account info, which it did not. Some apps seemed ready to go out of the box, and others seem to need more development. For example, Vudu is not showing the lists feature, which is relatively new, but very useful if you have a large library. Other apps seemed to have issues with specific content. For example, Google Play could not stream one of the movies in my library but worked fine with other content. Oddly enough, the Starz app, which gives me all kinds of headaches on other platforms, has been working flawlessly on this TV. Being an Android TV, there is also support for games, but sadly, not enough storage to accommodate them. I had to uninstall the one game I put on there because otherwise, there wasn't enough room for all my streaming apps. I also was sad to see that Stadia is not supported yet. Even though there is Chromecast "built-in," I still have to plug a Chromecast dongle into one the HDMI ports to use Stadia. Operating system aside, the picture is quite good. It appeared a little washed out until I adjusted the settings, but there are plenty of preset options to choose from. Most of the shortcomings that exist can be corrected with app and OS updates, but even out of the box, Android TV has advantages over most of the other platforms.

sweeper not a blower

Good for what it's billed as, but don't expect to be blowing leaves out of your yard with this. It's more appropriate for blowing leaves out of your garage or off your porch. It's light and cordless, which makes it good for getting around obstacles in the garage, or around furniture on the patio. But the tradeoff for those advantages is less power. There's also not a huge amount of capacity in the battery. I didn't run it all the way down to see how long it would last, but 10 minutes of blowing out my garage had it down to half when I put the battery back on the charger. The suction end is also designed well so it will stand on end when not in use - a nice space-saving feature. Again, a really good sweeper, but don't overestimate what you're getting here.

fun, if you've got the right space
on December 6, 2019

The kids really enjoy playing with this, but you need to have the right area to use it in. You have to have enough space where you can swing it around without hitting anything, and you also need to be able to prop your phone up where you can see the app while you're swinging the saber around. The position sensors in the saber are pretty good, and the app can tell how close you are to making the prescribed moves with it. The lights and sounds add a lot to the experience, but it's more difficult than it should be to turn off the saber and to exit the game. However, both of those things could be addressed with future updates to the app.

super cheap android watch
on November 19, 2019

I have bought and worn all different types of smartwatches, including several that run Wear OS. This is by far the worst one I've worn. Build quality is extremely cheap. It was difficult to initially pair with an iPhone 11 Pro, and once it was setup, it never managed to connect again. Nothing would work: restarting the phone, the app, the watch, toggling bluetooth. Nothing. It would not work with iOS. It would however pair and stay connected to a Pixel 3. But then you're still working with a watch from the very bottom of the Wear OS line. There was problematic lag between touching the screen and getting a response from the watch, sometimes causing an incorrect selection from the next menu. If you dig deep in the options, there are some attractive watch faces available, particularly if you tweak the color settings. However, I could never get it to read heart rate, so you might as well skip that complication on your watch face. So, don't buy this if you only have an iPhone, and if you have an Android phone, only if you're willing to trade quality for price.

details matter

Evaluated solely on the basis of sound quality, this speaker ranks near the top of any bluetooth speaker I've tried. It has a surprising amount of low end, and the highs are crystal clear. You can adjust the level of bass and treble with two knobs on the top of the speaker, or you can go into the app and adjust five ranges in the equalizer. What truly sets this apart though is the looks. Just from across the room, you get the impression of a guitar amp, but up close, the details really stand out. The finishing on the metal accents is superb, and all the little dials and switches continue the theme of an amp. A really interesting detail is that there are no numbers around the knobs and no pointers on the knobs themselves. Instead you have red leds that light up as the volume (or bass or treble) are increased. And you can even control how bright those lights are in the app. My only criticism is that the on switch could have a better feel, and you shouldn't have to hold it for a couple of seconds for it to register. But apart from that minor quibble, there is nothing wrong with this. Just all around great sound and great looks.

Attention to detail
on November 2, 2019

Maybe my favorite detail about this laptop is the little spring-loaded cover over the USB A port on the left side of the case. When there's nothing in the port, the cover maintains the contours of the case, but there's enough of a gap that you can easily push it down with the bottom edge of the USB plug and slide your cable in. That level of detail seems to be extended to the rest of this laptop. The screen has great resolution and brightness and only the thinest of bezel space on the sides. The camera is minuscule and easily hidden in the bezel above the screen. The chicklet-style keyboard has great feel, and the backlight below the keys has two levels of brightness. The included pen pairs easily and operates with almost zero lag, and it responds to varying levels of pressure. Switching to tablet mode is quick and seamless by folding the keyboard back behind the screen. One of the USB C ports is in the notch at the top of the case, so the power cord stays more out of the way when you're using it while plugged in. The other notch conceals the power button, so you're less likely to accidentally hit it. There's plenty of graphics power as it handles a second, external monitor without any difficulty. I can find nothing really to criticize here. Just a really, good solid performer in an ultraportable package.

simple, solid performer

Dead simple to set up and operate. Just pull the tab from the battery compartment, turn it on, and pair. Works like any other mouse, but in a compact and convenient form. The one thing that seems like a true innovation to me is how they hide the battery compartment and USB dongle. The whole top of the mouse is held on magnetically, so instead of trying to dig a plastic latch back with your fingernail, the whole thing just pops off and on, simply and securely. It seems so obvious and simple, I wonder why I've never seen it done anywhere else before now. The USB dongle is also hidden there, so there's almost zero chance of losing it while traveling. Overall, it's a good size: small enough to use when traveling, but not so small that your hand starts to hurt after five minutes. One of the best "portable" mice out there.

Just ... wow

The haptic feedback on these headphones is incredible. I've never experienced anything like it. I mean, yes, I've used really good headphones that had so much low end, you might think they were vibrating the sides of your head, but these headphones actually do. Yes, the bass response is quite good, but there's a whole extra dimension added when the headphones themselves start vibrating along with the music. These are worth the price just for that experience alone. Now, the downsides. In quiet environments, I could hear hissing in the background, and that was even more noticeable with noise canceling turned on. Two, these don't seem quite big enough to be considered over-ear headphones vs. on-ear headphones. However, that may be purposely done to enhance the haptic feedback. Finally, if you pay attention closely, the haptic feedback seemed to kick in just a fraction of a second behind the actual sound, which makes it feel just a bit less natural. Still, you really, really ought to experience this.

sturdy, maybe too clicky

This is a good, sturdy case with plenty of protection for the phone. The back provides an unimpeded view of the color of your phone (if you're trying to show off a green one), but the sides add some visual (but not tactile) texture to the case. The buttons are very clicky and don't get in the way of operating the device controls. If anything, they might make it too easy. I kept inadvertently triggering Siri when I would pick up my phone or pull it out of my pocket.

Not as complicated as it seems
on October 15, 2019
Posted by: bradcon
from Hays, KS
Having become used to K-cup coffee makers, I wasn't entirely sold on the idea of this machine. It looks kind of complicated, and if you read the user's manual, it sounds really complicated. In practice, though, it's not. That's not to say there isn't a lot going on behind the scenes, just that when it comes to making a drink, it's quite easy. There is a bit of setup involved, but nothing that complicated. It will take some more maintenance down the line, but not really too much of that either, considering what's going on inside the machine. All you have to do is tell it what kind of beverage you want, push a few buttons and wait. Behind the scenes, it grinds the right amount of coffee for the strength of the brew and the size of the cup you choose, adds the right amount of water at the temperature you select, brews your cup, then dumps the used grounds into an internal bin (that really doesn't fill up that fast). Add a few steps if you want to froth some milk, but that's really it. My wife raves about how good the lattes are - she wanted to give it five stars - but I think it brews the straight coffee a little weak - hence only four stars. The manual says that it learns over time how to adjust the brew, and it wants you to wait until it's had some time to learn before adjusting the coarseness of the grind. So, I may be able to up the strength of the brew later, but not in time for this review. This really takes most of the pain out of brewing your own specialty coffee drinks at home. If those big, complicated espresso machines scared you off, this is the way to go.
