Cooking With Bluetooth!
on April 29, 2024
Posted by: mobilelawyer
Modern conveniences sometimes cause us to ask, “How did I ever live without one of these?”. We’ve had mechanical meat thermometers for years: stick the thermometer into the meat and look inside the stove for an exact reading of the internal temperature, so that you will know the meat is fully cooked. Most cooking instructions provide very general guidelines for the length of time to cook, but almost all will specify that you are to cook X hours/minutes for a piece of meat, “…or until the internal temperature is XXX degrees”. In preparing meat, cooking to the proper internal temperature not only ensures the meat will taste better because it is fully cooked, but is also kills any pathogens, such as salmonella, that can cause sickness in humans.
So, why this product? How about extreme convenience? It comes with two ¼ inch diameter probes that are about five inches in length. You stick the probe fully into the meat. In my case, I was cooking two pork tenderloins in my stove. You are advised to be sure to stick the probe completely into the meat so that only the handle on the end is visible. In my case, I had two one-pound tenderloins, and I used one probe for each. On a larger cut of meat, such as a roast or ham, you might want to use the two probes in different locations on the meat, to make sure that the entire cut has reached the proper temperature.
Now the fun part. The two probes come in a convenient charging case. A USB-C to USB-A cable is furnished, and you can use virtually any charger, and after only a few minutes, I was able to get the probes to a full charge. There is an indicator on the charging device to indicate the charge level. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in your phone settings. Download the app onto your iPhone or Android device, pair the charger, and you are ready to cook! You set an internal temperature for each probe, and, when the temperature is reached, an alarm goes off on your smartphone. That’s it! You don’t even have to crack the stove until you are ready to remove the cooked meat!
During cooking, the provided software provides both the internal temperature of the meat, as well as the ambient temperature inside the stove in real time, and the Bluetooth range is said to be up to five hundred feet! I was sitting outside having a drink when the alarm went off. It is that easy. The probes can also be used on an outside grill.
Even though it is not mentioned in the instructions, the device also comes with a small wire brush. I assume such a brush would be handy for cleaning hard to reach parts of the grill grate. I did not see an immediate use for using it to clean the probes. They were very easy to clean off and wipe clean after cooking. After use, the probes are stored in the charger which also serves as an attractive and useful protective case.
I had one glitch on my first cooking experience with these spikes. The internal temperature sensor went off far too early on one of the probes. I pulled the meat out of the stove and looked at the piece that had the early reporting probe. I found that I had accidentally inserted the probe all the way through the tenderloin so that it pierced the meat and came out the other side. The instructions advise that the meat must fully encase the probe, so I reinserted it so that it did not protrude, and all was well.
I highly recommend this product, and wonder how I ever lived without it!

Practical, Comfortable Headset
on April 3, 2024
Posted by: mobilelawyer
This headset provided a service that I needed and has been a pleasure to use. It is a noise reducing bluetooth headset with a boom mike. Ridiculously, the specs on the Best Buy product page show the weight to be 4.3 pounds. No way. The headset is 4.3 ounces. The box it was shipped in would not even come close to 4.3 pounds. It is easy to put this headset on and forget it.
The earpads are soft and pliable, and the headset produces great sound. I streamed music and marveled at the crystal clear sound. When used for hands free operation of my iPhone, I heard the folks on the other side of my calls clearly, and they heard me. Apple Music and YouTube Music sounded just fine.
People on the other end of telephone calls did not cut out when I spoke, and I could talk without them stepping on me. This headset was a much better solution than using the speakerphone feature on the iPhone.
Pairing the device with my iPhone was simple and immediate in execution. You can also pair your headset with your computer, if desired, to make VOIP calls, Google Voice calls or for Zoom conferencing. It just works!
Highly recommended.

It Smashes All My Buttons!
on March 28, 2024
Posted by: mobilelawyer
No laptop is perfect, but if you search for one that most completely matches your needs, you are likely to be pleased. I am greatly pleased with this Asus. At its price point, I have seen this model referred to as “midrange”. Using pricing as a measure, I can somewhat agree that the description is apt, but this model scores 100 per cent on meeting all my personal needs at a very reasonable price.
It is light. At 2.82 pounds, it is gorgeous in its Jasper Gray metal case and sports a beautiful 14-inch touchscreen OLED panel. It does not have 2.8K resolution, but for office work the color accurate 400 nit (500 nits with HDR enabled) screen with 1920 X 1200 resolution is just fine for me and should increase battery life for the snappy Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor. This model sports a hefty 75-watt hour battery.
Battery life is more important to me than extended resolution. If you must have 2.8K, there is another Asus model sold by Best Buy that meets that spec, albeit for a higher price. If you are torn on this issue, simply visit your local Best Buy and compare the screens. I could not be happier with mine. For office work and media consumption, it is perfect.
Sixteen gigabytes of DDR5 RAM and a1TB Gen 4 SSD further complement this Evo Edition package, and ports are plentiful. There is a single 3.2 USB-A port on the left side, and two USB-C ports on the right. Each USB-C port can pass video and serve as a charging connection, and they are both Thunderbolt 4 speced. There is also an HDMI port on the right as well as a headphone jack. If you need an SD card slot or ethernet, you’ll need a dongle. On a thin laptop like this one, there is simply not enough physical space to supply every possible physical port.
The lighted keyboard is comfortable, and the keys are well spaced with enough travel to make typing a pleasure. The webcam is 1080p and produces a natural, detailed picture. The camera is infrared and works with Windows Hello for hands- free login. There is no fingerprint sensor.
The Intel Core Ultra 7 processor literally tears through office work and web browsing. It is also more than adequate for light video editing and should easily handle your photo editing chores. I am not a gamer, so you will need to look to other reviewers for their opinions on gaming. I do not think this laptop is aimed at hard core gamers.
Neither heat nor fan noise has plagued me during my testing of this model. You should expect exemplary battery life, along with efficient performance. I can easily get a full day of battery life with my office productivity chores.
I love this Asus. Highly recommended.

Attractive alternative!
on March 27, 2024
Posted by: mobilelawyer
This attractive white active stylus looks just like my Apple Pencil. The dimensions are identical. It also magnetically attaches to my iPad Air, but cannot charge through induction like the Apple Pencil can.
It charges through a matching white USB-C cable, and you can connect the other end of the cable to any device such as a computer, phone, or iPad which can pass a charging current. An LED indicator tells you when the stylus has enough juice to work. I hooked the stylus to my iPad, and in just few minutes the LED changed from orange to white, indicating it was ready to put into use. A double tap on the top of the stylus turns it on or off.
The charge will last for many hours, and, once charged, the stylus is great for writing notes and any text entry that the user may want to try. I am not big on more sophisticated drawing, so for those who want that, I defer to those reviewers who have that skill and need such flexibility.
This product does everything I use the Apple Pencil for, at a fraction of the cost. It looks great, and its easy to use. Highly reccomended!

Scrappy Competitor
on February 20, 2024

My intentions did not comport with reality when I agreed to test this drive. I intended to replace the installed 512GB M.2 NVME drive in my HP Dragonfly Pro with the 1TB SanDisk Extreme M.2 NVME SSD I was to test. While I knew the Dragonfly Pro’s memory was soldered in and therefore non-replaceable, I assumed that the installed M.2 drive was removable and replaceable. However, when the drive arrived, I watched videos of some of the YouTube reviewers of the laptop and discovered that its SSD is not user replaceable.
I had no plan B. I no longer own a desktop, and the other products I own are MacBooks of recent vintage and therefore not candidates for any SSD replacement.
To test the SanDisk, I was relegated to installing it in a USB enclosure. Since I suspect other users may face the same dilemma, I decided to test the drive with the tools I had. For those who might consider using the SanDisk in this manner, be advised that you may not be able to get the advertised read speeds for this drive which are stated to be 5150 MB/sec. The limiting factor is the speed of the USB enclosure. Connected to the M.2 slot on my MacBook Pro, its installed 1 TB M.2 drive had a measured read speed of 6129.09 MB/sec and a write speed of 7393.54 using AmorphousDiskMark. The Dragonfly Pro’s installed M.2 drive had a tested read result of 7037.02 MB/sec and a write speed of 3771.62 MB/sec using CrystalDiskMark.
Both the MacBook and the HP have Thunderbolt 3 capable USB-C ports which can pass 40Gb/sec, however, my Orico enclosure is only specified for 10Gb/sec. Neither a heatsink nor a thermal pad was furnished with the SanDisk Extreme, but I only noticed occasional warmth when using the enclosure. Excessive heat did not appear to be any problem with SanDisk during use while installed in the enclosure.
The CrystalDiskMark results for the SanDisk showed a read speed of 1001.87 MB/sec and a write speed of 991.00 MB/sec. Again, the bottleneck in evidence is not the SanDisk, but a limitation imposed by the enclosure. I am endeavoring to order one of the more modern M.2 enclosures which advertise 40Gb/sec speed and will re-test and post the results in the comments below this review.
The SanDisk is a speedy and competitive drive and priced accordingly. Sizable photographic and video files transferred speedily and without issue for me, even under the limitations of my enclosure. I am looking forward to re-testing with a newer and better enclosure. I fully expect the SanDisk to come very close to the speed of the NVME drive mounted in the M2 slot on my Dragonfly Pro. I expect it to serve me for many years to come.

Hold on to your hat!
on November 8, 2023
Posted by: mobilelawyer
This is a feature- packed soundbar just a rung behind Samsungs q990c in features, but generally priced hundreds of dollars less and with almost all the features offered by its more expensive sibling, including the very specific sound placement of Dolby Atmos. The device offers 9.1.4 channel True Dolby Atmos, and Q-Symphony with some Samsung TV models that also blends in the built-in speakers in the TV to work in harmony with the soundbar. The subwoofer and surround speakers only have to be plugged into the wall for power: they have Bluetooth radios that connect them with the main soundbar, so the cables between the speakers are. totally eliminated. A Wi-Fi connection is also possible. In addition to your TV, you can also connect to a streaming or gaming device via HDMI or optical digital audio, and you can also pair your smartphone with the soundbar as well. Amazon Alexa is supported as is Apple AirPlay2. Dolby formats supported include Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS:X, DTS-HD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio. The availability of those formats depend on your having a TV or other device that can support delivery of that format to your speakers.
Why a soundbar as opposed to distinct components for your surround experience? For one thing, the sound bar is specifically engineered to direct the Dolby effects to your ears more efficiently than separate components could; to take up less space; and to be more aesthetically pleasing to your living area with the elimination of all the connecting cables. It succeeds on all counts. I’m not arguing that you could not assemble a surround sound system with discrete components that would blow this one our of the water, but how much would it cost, and how much space would it occupy in your listening environment? Believe me, this system delivers surround sound entertainment at every level!
When I received the soundbar for testing, the only requirement was that I owned a Samsung TV. I had a Samsung plasma set in my bedroom, but it has some age on it. It did not support HDMI ARC, so I had to connect the TV to the soundbar via the optical digital cable. The system was unbelievably easy to set up. Unbox the speakers, plug them in, turn the soundbar on, and you are in business. That Samsung TV had a soundbar attached in the past, but it was just a 2.1 set up. This surround system and the experience of watching movies with it was other-worldly. The only thing missing from the presentation was Dolby Atmos, which the older set was not able to deliver. And don’t fret if you don’t have a Dolby Atmos TV, but want effective surround sound. This soundbar will totally immerse you in an envelope of sound, with very specific front, back and surround effects that totally amazed me. I can only imagine what Dolby Atmos would add to the many other Dolby effects this soundbar has.
My main listening area is in a large living room with a very high ceiling, extending up to about 30 feet at its highest point. But the surround speakers were placed to the rear of the listening space an area where the ceiling only starts it’s slope, providing a reflective area for the surrounds within no more than about 14 feet above the speakers. This worked very nicely. The surround effects I enjoyed in the much smaller bedroom were duplicated in the larger room. This included prodigious bass output from the subwoofer. I literally had to turn the subwoofer volume down to suit my taste, and I am bass-loving listener.
Alas, none of my living room components, neither the TV nor the AVR supported eARC or Dolby Vision, but the soundbar otherwise delivered an incredible surround experience, again delivered through the optical digital connection. It was pretty hard to miss what I have never had, and this soundbar will be ready when I upgrade my TV in the future. I do have an AppleTV2 device which is supposed to support Dolby Atmos, but I could not get it to work through the HDMI cable to the soundbar, and Atmos cannot be delivered through the optical digital connection. Other Apple TV users in my dilemma have had to reconfigure their device to properly extract the Atmos, and I will probably need to do that as well. If I do, I will comment under this review and report on the results.
This is a wonderful soundbar, even if I experienced some quirks with my older equipment. I don’t see how anyone could get more surround excitement than this soundbar provides on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Highly recommended!

Compact and Stylish
on November 1, 2023
Posted by: mobilelawyer
This is a featherlight Windows ultraportable that is a snap to carry around, has very good battery life, and the gorgeous styling and build quality of a Surface product. The lid is metal, and the base is made of a composite material. This is the second sage green Surface product I have reviewed, and I am partial to the attention- grabbing body color.
If you are a student or professional and need to travel light, you need to drop by BestBuy and look carefully at this model. The 12.4-inch screen is small when compared to larger laptops, but the device is designed not to take up much room in your bag or backpack, and it weighs only 2.4 pounds. I think the glossy screen looks marvelous. It’s not quite 1920 x 1080 resolution, so it can’t be called HD, but given the size of the screen, I am hard-pressed to find any fault with it in everyday use. Webpages and streamed content look fantastic to my eyes, and it’s only sipping battery power while in use. The 3:2 aspect ratio was perfect for office work. The sound is more than adequate from the built-in speakers, and a headphone jack is also included- a relative rarity these days.
This is a Surface product, so it has a responsive touchscreen, and I found the keyboard delightful to use. The power key also serves as a fingerprint scanner for fast and secure login, but, alas, there is no facial recognition. My only disappointment with the keyboard is that it lacks backlighting. If that feature is must for your everyday uses, then you’ll probably rule this model out for consideration. This issue only came up for me when I was trying to type something in total darkness, which is a rare situation for me. Note that backlighting does reduce battery life, and the design intent with this model was to maximize battery life.
I have gotten more than 8 hours on a single charge doing document work, email, and media consumption. More intensive tasks, of course, will shorten the available battery life. The screen is plenty bright indoors with almost 400 nit performance. I always lower the brightness to increase battery life. The supplied 39 watt charging brick quickly replenishes the battery through the Surface Connect port, or you can also use the USB-C port to charge with other adapters. There is a single legacy USB-A 3.1 port as well. You can also use the USB-C port to connect to a monitor that accepts that type connection, without the need for any hub or adapter.
The webcam looks sharp at 720p, but you will need proper lighting for best performance with video conferencing.
My wife intends to use this laptop for work and play and it will fit her needs perfectly. If you need a larger screen, there are plenty of models out there to satisfy your laptop needs, but if you need compact, the field is much more limited. This model features a Core i5 12th generation Intel processor and 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD which will more than handle her everyday productivity and entertainment tasks.

Convenient and Compact Ethernet
on October 21, 2023
Posted by: mobilelawyer
It works. It's convenient. It's iPhone/Mac white. Why not?
Oh, the neglected ethernet connection. You won't find it on any iPad or Macbook. It just takes up too much space on that nice, thin device. But what if you are in an environment that does not offer WiFi, or an office that requires an ethernet connection only?
Simple. Plug this connector into your device's USB-C port, connect an ethernet cable which is connected to your network, and you are in business with this minimalist assessory that is super easy to carry in your briefcase, backpack, or whatever. Why tote around a hub if an ethernet connection is the only assessory you need?
It worked with my Macbook Pro and iPad Air. Once attached, each device showed a pop up window asking if I wanted to allow the device to access my Apple device. I answered yes, and an Ethernet connection showed up in my system folder. There was nothing to set up.
The adapter offers Gigabit speed, was faster than WiFi for me at home, and can offer a more secure connection in an office environment. All those features with the convenience of a connector that takes up virtually no space in my bag. What's not to like?
I don't have an iPhone 15, so I couldn't very well test this connector with current my iPhone which does not have a USB-C port. But I do have a Pixel 6a that supports USB-C, and this ethernet connector worked pefectly with it.
Highly reccomended.

Looks good and works well

This pretty four-foot USB-C to Lightning cable is practical and beautifully made. It's braided cover is designed to withstand up to 15,000 bends for improved durablity. I don't have a practical way to confirm that spec other than trying to bend the thing 15K times which I think would be a little silly.
This cable comes in premium packaging and appears to be built to last. It is MFi certified and compatible with all Apple devices with a Lightning connection.
For those who may be thinking, "Isn't Apple ditching the lightning connection on the iPhone? Why would I need this?" I ordered it becuase I will certainly need it for the foreseeable future. My iPhone 15 has been ordered, but I still have two sets of iPods that have to be charged, and no way that I am going to update either one of those just becuase Apple may change the connector.
This handsome cable will be getting the job done for me to charge up those devices for some time to come, and I am looking forward to using it as long as it hold up. And considering that it can take 15,000 bends, this cable may outlast yours truly!

Sits Pretty and Does it All
on September 29, 2023
Posted by: mobilelawyer
This keyboard is indeed Epic.
It is solid, heavy (in a positive sense: it is not going to skid around on your desk), and it is full size with a number pad. Of course, it is also lighted. No batteries are involved- you charge it with the included USB-C cable, and the charge is supposed to last for months. I have used it for a week, and the red LED, indicating it needs a charge, has never come on.
I quickly paired my Windows pc and my Mac Mini via the two sperate Bluetooth pairing buttons on the keyboard. You switch between them easily on the keyboard. Also supplied is a dongle that attaches via Wi-Fi. It was just as easy to set up: a separate 2.4gHz key lights up and you press it to connect to the dongle. I did not have a third computer available to switch between, so I stuck the dongle in the Windows pc. I could pull the dongle off the Windows pc and the keyboard was still connected via its Bluetooth pairing. By the way, you can stow the dongle when not in use underneath the keyboard.
You need to use the dongle and download the Jlab software to get full use of the programmable key functions, and there are a plethora of options available. You have 3 specialty keys that can be programmed as you please, but it does not stop there. All of the f keys at the top of the keyboard can be reprogramed to perform different tasks than their default functions, and if that method does not supply enough combinations, the software lets you switch between 3 different Programmed set ups. My head is literally spinning with all the possibilities!
This is not a clickety-clack keyboard. Its operation is virtually silent. I enjoyed typing on it, and got excellent speed, limited only by my typing skills. Having a keypad again when I had lived without one for some time felt really good.
And then there’s the media knob at the top right. It’s metal, solid feeling and fun! Use it to control the volume on the pc by turning it like an old school volume knob. Press it to pause a media file and press it again to resume playback. Double press it to track forward, and press and hold it to track back. You will wonder how you ever did without this feature.
The keyboard is very attractive. It is obviously marketed by Jlab to compete with the well-known Logitech MX line of products. The Jlab website touts a direct comparison between both models. I own both, and they each have their strong points. The Jlab Epic compares favorably to the MX line in many areas, and Epic’s price simply cannot be beaten for its level of utility and programmability.
Highly recommended.

Enjoy your favorite tracks with this iLive IHB603B stereo system, which supports Bluetooth 2.1 and features an FM radio, CD player and 3.5mm auxiliary input for a variety of listening options. A remote ensures simple operation.

Can you play the CD through a detached bluetooth speaker?

If I understand your question correctly, no. You have to have a means to get the sound from the CD: either from a corded or wireless connection. If you have a physical cord from the CD that terminates in a mini jack connection to the Sony, you could use that to connect the two, and, of course, the speaker has a Bluetooth radio as well, but I am not familiar with CD players with Bluetooth radios. So far, I have only used the speaker to stream from my smartphone through Bluetooth.

Enjoy playlists in private with these Sennheiser wireless earbuds. The three-button remote lets you take calls or cycle through music with a single touch, and the earpieces are magnetic, so they stick to one another to prevent loss while not in use. These Sennheiser wireless earbuds have a range of up to 30 feet from a paired device.

Are these earbuds sweat or waterproof?

They are not advertised as such, so I would not count on it. The are great sounding and light, but they are not listed as sport phones or waterproof.

Yes. One year depot through Lenovo. I upgraded to two years in home for only $69, which I think is a great deal.

can the hard disc of this machine be upgraded to 256g ?

Yes it can, if you are adept at carefully taking small things apart. Look in the Lenovo community website for discussion on how it is done. Many have upgraded to 256GB ssd's and some have increased the memory to 8GB.
