Great mesh network for large properties
on March 19, 2024
Posted by: BostonBru
I have really enjoyed using and exploring the capabilities of this WiFi 6 mesh router. We have a small horse farm and I'm able to place nodes in the workshop and tack room to cover most of the main property with WiFi signal: and since upgrading to this system I have yet to see any incidents where our WiFi security cameras lose signal and don't record: We rely on these camera both to know when someone we aren't expecting shows up at the barn and to be able to keep an eye on the horses: When we're home its fine to take a walk out but when we're on the go its really great to know we can always rely on our WiFi to have coverage that enables checking on a large property like this. My kids can be over 1000 ft from the office where the modem and primary node of the router is and still stream shows etc. The setup experience was okay: Linksys advertises 10 minutes to running and that is technically true: I was able to setup the primary node and have have two secondary nodes working in different rooms of the house in about 11 minutes: but this was without update network SSID's, password or admin settings. Doing all of that work was really cumbersome since they make you use a mobile app: it would've been WAY quicker if I could reliably login to 192.186.1.1 to get configured. I have since added a could MX series LINKSYS nodes on given the size of our property and I'm happy to report that overall that was pretty easy.

Best entry level AMC headphones
on November 21, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I have a few other over-ear noise cancelling headphones: TLDR is that these are the cheapest model I've used and they do demonstrate that: but if you want to spend less than $100 on a pair of good over the ear noise cancelling headphones I would pick these.
The noise cancelling is adequate, it's not the best I've had but it better than my premium ANCs from 2018. I didn't like the out of the box sound balance, and I did notice that the noise cancelling isn't as effective in the treble ranges so it can be hard to hear that part of your media as well. The overall sound quality was less than either of my other over the ears, and I noticed but being reasonable these are roughly 1/2 the price of any other model I have now and while the others are better, "twice" as good is a very subjective threshold that I don't think my other pairs meet.
I do think you need relatively small ears for these to be a choice for you, I found the cups uncomfortable and the driver rubber my ear but my wife who is more petite didn't have any problems.
I do want to acknowledge that they weren't very effective for calls, if I was anywhere but my on quiet home it was difficult to hear me and overall the microphone quality was worse than if I was just on my phone, I heard everyone else well though.

Unmistakably a Dyson. Good but not best purifier
on November 1, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
In our house, we love our Dyson vacuums (both corded and cordless) and our Dyson hair dryer. We also love our Blueair air purifiers that I've purchased for most of the rooms in our house. As a family we've invested heavily in reliable air purifiers to make sure everyone in the house can breath well with our pets (2 cats, 2 dogs) but have really found them great now that we've had major wild fire air quality problems two years running. Given how much we like our other Dyson products I was excited for the Purifier Cool Gen1. It is a great purifier, and what I really like is that it oscillates and fans while it purifies so that you can really cycle air faster. It comes with a remote and while it asks you to setup the Dyson app as you open the box, it is NOT a smart device. I've liked my Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max that has a similar sq ft rating and is half the price of the Dyson because it does give me air quality history for review on my phone: see the historical air quality is important to me so it was frustrating not to have that feature.
The LCD screen provides lots of details regarding function but I foundmyself missing the simple color coded LED light that instantly told me the rough quality of air (white, blue, yellow, orange red)
Perhaps the biggest issue with it however is that the form factor and overall lightweight make it very tippy: it stands roughly 4 feet tall and weighs peanuts, so even the cats have the ability to knock it over when they're running through the house in the middle of the night.
Ultimately this is a great looking air purifier with great HEPA level filtration, nice LCD screen, great oscillating functionality to fan with purified air and an intuitive remote control. Like many things Dyson, the cost is a huge factor and in this particular case I think there are competing products (Blueair!) that also look great, perform well and for a fraction of the Dyson cost.

A great color all in one business printer
on October 16, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I started working remotely in 2009 and at the time I purchased a Dell 2335dn high volume printer with scanner. That was a beast, big, heavy and 2009 technology. It was becoming increasingly hard to setup the printer with new devices and really really hard to find toner for it. With an advertised volume slightly less than but comparable to my Dell, full color options, and LCD touch screen this seemed like it would be a worthwhile upgrade.
After using it for a while now I can say that overall my feelings are mixed, but over the long term I anticipate it being a worthy replacement to my home office needs. In addition to my home office needs, which admittedly see reduced printing needs year after year (I can do most receipts online and post pandemic most contracts have been executed on DocuSign), we as a family do have robust needs for printing on our social calendar. Between my wife and I we server on school committee, PTO, a couple local charitable orgs, the park and recreation department and coach one or two youth sport teams most seasons. This busy social calendar does mean color flyers, practice schedules and other documents are in high demand. I was please to see that this prints color far more efficiently than most ink jets that I've dealt with in the past, I haven't tried photos but adding a splash of color works really well: "business" uses. I will say for high volume print jobs in black and white, like research papers etc. that may run 40 - 80 pages this printer takes noticeably longer than my older one but not enough to be a burden.
I did give 4 stars instead of 5 for two major reasons: 1) This was the hardest device I've had to setup in a number of years. I'm wondering if part of the issue was use of wired LAN instead of WiFi but the out of the box network configurations didn't work and prevented registration, firmware, etc from working and made it very confusing. 2) I wasn't a fan of the Refresh subscription. 2a) I really didn't like being asked to commit to a plan before I had learned how much we really print in a month. If I had to guess I'd say over 100 pages a month, but the cost of that plan is around $180 annually. 2b) Doing that arithmetic made this feel like a bum deal, in 14 years on my last printer I bought toner 7 times at a rough cost of $65 to $110 depending on if I could find recycled cartridges. While I recognize CMYB is 4 times the cartridges of a simple black and white, I want the flexibility to print work documents that may run up to 200 pages and if in the long run I need to replace cartridges annually or more I'm probably not going to be happy.

The best FitBit/Smartwatch you can get for Android
on October 16, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I've used this watch for four days and I've really enjoyed it. I'm upgrading from a Sense 2 using a pixel 7 android phone and I feel like using the pixel watch 2 addressed some of my biggest frustrations with the sense 2. I had to replace a catch-fire-on-your-wrist Ionic and went with the Sense 2 which had the most robust feature set at the time and had three really big issues with it: 1) Its horrible to try and use with gloves (below freezing) or when its over 85 F and 90+% humidity, kinda like it was designed by a California company that was unaware the rest of the country has inclement weather. 2) I really (like really really) missed my buttons on the Ionic - the touch screen was always doing the opposite of what I wanted, especially on runs when it would pause or end my activity with the slightest bead of sweat or tug on my sleeve. 3) If I'm honest, I expected more and more functionality out of the Sense 2 but felt like the amount of third party of first party apps was going down instead of up. Having a Google Home integrated house and not being able to do anything about it on my Google-manufactured smart watch was really frustrating.
I bring all of this up to contrast my Pixel Watch: the Pixel Watch does a FANTASTIC job being my workout companion, I find it easy to get to my workouts and I can lock the screen so my run or bike ride gets recorded in full. Out of the box the Pixel Watch provides the kind of integrated Google experience I expect where I can manage my smart home, including unlock Yale doors or turn on Philips light bulbs without worrying about where my phone is. I also like how configurable the out of the box watch faces and widgets are: I was able to customize my watch face for the four stats I care most about (HR, outdoor temp, calendar and steps) and there are helpful widgets that provide better insights into my biosensor/fitbit data than any predecessor fitbit device provided. New features like sensing when I'm stressed are cool, but I haven't quite figured out how to make them valuable to me. I did tweak my screen settings so that it taps to wake screen and that's given me around a day and half battery for a charge: Great for a true smart watch but significantly less than most garmin and fitbit products
Observations that weren't dealbreakers for me: 1) I had to go onto the forums and learn how to do a hard reboot of the watch during initial setup since it didn't work the first time: worked perfect the second try. 2) In order to setup FitBit on the watch I had to migrate my fitbit account to a google account. This proved difficult since we have a fitbit family account and while I'm the primary guardian of our fitbit account my wife is the primary guardian in google. It was pretty frustrating but we eventually figured that out. 3) I have yet to get Google Wallet to work on my watch: this one actually bugs me a bit since I really want to be able to complete purchases without fishing out wallet or phone - much cleaner and safer. 4) I already have fitbit premium because I found the additional functionality worth it without a pixel watch, but not everyone will agree and you really should consider it to get the most from the watch.

Great smart lock for piece of mind
on September 13, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I really liked the Yale Assure Lock 2: from the outside it has a nice clean almost minimal look. Internal to the door it has a secure deadbolt that didn't make me feel like I was giving up security in order to add the convenience of smart features.
I installed all of the mechanical deadbolts in our house, and I found it easy to setup the Yale on my entryway door: the step by step instructions were good at answering the questions I had to make sure it was installed correctly, including the door sense. Door sense is basically a magnet that you install into the door jam that allows you Yale lock to know when the door is closed vs open.
I found the app setup relatively straightforward: At least as easy if not easier than most Google Nest products and far easier than Philips Hue to find my Yale Lock from within the App, sync it and get the app working. It was also really easy to add Yale Lock using Works with Nest functionality of my Google Home, this allows me to add the Lock to my Google routines and to ask my Nest Hub the status of the front door or to unlock it.
The one tricky spot I had to tinker with to figure out was that I ad to make my wife a guest in the home and then upgrade her from guest to owner to give her the same abilities to manage our house and the door lock that I had.
Overall I think this is a wonderful device: I like being able to look or ask google anywhere I am to make sure our front door is locked as we left the house and I also like that I can provide guest access to our dog sitters or baby sitters so they can use a temporary door code to get in and out without us having to worry about how many sets of keys to our house are floating around the neighborhood. In the limited time we've had this setup its been helpful and we've had no issues!

Great for tablets, too small for laptops
on September 10, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I liked the keystroke and the circular slightly concave keys. The keyboard is very comfortable to type with, but it is a little small, small enough that I have to think to type. I have a few different laptops and only my 13" has a smaller keyboard than this. If you use a full size keyboard with any regularity I think you will notice the awkwardness of the smaller size. Where I do think this keyboard is extremely useful is with tablets: this keyboard offers great functionality especially compared to onscreen keyboards.
One of my nits with wireless keyboards is delayed typing or repeat characters and while I won't say neither has happened its among the best.
I liked the mouse for its portability, much like the keyboard its compact and designed to travel, its the first one I've had that I can keep in my desk keyboard drawer and slide in and out. It is very responsive and smooth but ultimately I couldn't use it because it was just uncomfortable. For a compact mouse I still prefer vairiations on the logitech M317.
Both mouse and keyboard feel premium, and its great to know that there is recycled materials in them.
Ultimately I probably won't use the mouse owing to the discomfort but the keyboard has two great uses: use with pads or other tablets where its allows for faster typing and has more functionality than the on screen keys and for connecting to a smart tv to make it easier to find your favorite shows on streaming apps or reentering all the passwords.
To sum up: they keyboard is comfortable, if small, and has great uses just not with laptops: forget about the mouse logitech has lots of better options.

Great potential with a few rough edges
on August 31, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
I was genuinely excited to try this device out. I'm big on cord cutting and this felt like a great way to provide local channels to all of the TVs in my house with one antennae. It also offers an easy way to schedule recordings of those broadcasts to watch back later. Specifically sporting events and award shows are a couple things my wife and I feel like we always need a plan if we want to watch and this really gives us great options without having to get cable or satellite. We also like having local weather in the morning and have a small TV in our kitchen that is basically just to watch local morning news.
The physical setup of my tablo was relatively straightforward: plug all the wires in, but a good (ideally powered) antennae in the best location in your house and your whole house can use that one signal without running wires. When setting up the TVs and the your mobile phone is where the polish of teh tablo experience started to fade. You can scan a QR code, download the app and get moving quickly, but you're forced to install a firmware update that broke the link between the physical device on your online account during setup. I had to uninstall the app after firmware upgrade to fix, which is always a stressful did-I-just-brick-my-new-tablo experience. I'm an Android user and YMMV in iOS. I was excited that the scanning for tv stations and finalization of the setup was all smooth. Watching my antennae on my phone was fantastic and worked great!
I was disappointed in the overall TV experience unfortunately. The two largest TV brands are Samsung and LG and my nicest TVs are those models. Samsung has no native app for tablo and LG only has the old tablo app which is completely different despite the same naming. In order to watch on LG or Samsung you will need to get a chromecast of roku device, which feels a little redundant when this will be the only app you cast instead of using the TV's native app. To make maters worse the watching experience is inconsistent for me on Android TV's. My android TV worked great during the first setup, but on later attempts I never got tablo to work on Android again, it was just stuck on the loading screen.
Its not bad by any stretch, but a consistent experience on TVs, especially on premium TVs from LG and Samsumg would be the difference between being good and being great.

An amazing, minimalist all-in-one desktop
on August 29, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
Firstly I want to clarify: The lenovo website lists this computer as NOT touch screen and that is accurate: This is not a touch screen all in one. It is an amazing 32" 4k all in one with the latest intel i9 processor, solid state drive and comfortable amount of RAM and wireless keyboard and mouse included. I mention the wireless keyboard and mouse since I was happy with something that was higher quality than the typical Logitech K270 I look to add to new machines as a replacement, that isn't necessary here! I also love the built-in webcam that is the first I've truly found to be better than a USB webcam for Zoom/Meet/etc conferences. Everything overall runs very smooth and responsive: it was easy to load all of our family profiles from our other window devices just by logging into our Microsoft accounts. Aesthetically I love the looks of this machine: it is thinner than my 32" Samsung 4k monitor and includes premium speakers in the silhouette. If you're going to plugin some additional peripheral monitors you may have some issues with the Bezel not giving you that wall-to-wall screens experience: there is a lot more space than typical from edge of screen to edge of casing.
Ultimately this is a machine to take care of my hobby programming and design work (light coding, video editing and photo editing) and attend personal zoom calls and the performance and screen completely meet those needs. I love this computer for savings me space on the desk but delivering the performance with a large & crisp screen!

Great way to boost your PS5
on June 26, 2023
Posted by: BostonBru
Investing in a high performing, large, Solid State Drive for your PS5 is an excellent way to make sure that you have plenty of memory to play several games at once. My son has a PS5 that he got for Christmas and I've also added my account to it and downloaded some titles on it, with a stock system having 10 titles downloaded is a real stretch, and easy to accomplish with two different profiles on the same hardware. I found that it was relatively easy to install, Sony has a youtube video that walks you through the process in less than 5 minutes: Super helpful when the company themselves releases a video so you're not relying on some random dude who did it when you're opening up over $500 in hardware and looking to make sure you don't void your warranty. After the install we have plenty of space so that it will be a couple years before either my son or I have to make a hard decision about letting go of a game that we no longer play. You could look at the 4TB instead but I actually think that this is the right blend of size and price. As far as performance, A final note: I couldn't tell what loaded from the SSD and what loaded from original storage, any differences in performances are beyond my aging perception. I don't play competively so I can't comment on milliseconds of load difference, but things load comparable to original storage which is good enough for me

Does the GoPro 10 have the lighting capability to film indoor? I have the GoPro Hero 5. It’s awesome outdoors but is very records very poorly indoors. Wondering if this has changed on GoPro 10. Thanks.

I've used the Hero 10 in low light indoor situations and been thoroughly impressed with the output. I do notice a short wash out if I have a shot that goes from indoors to outdoors but it quickly updates to the new lighting condition.

How is the microphone with phone calls? Is the sound muffled or altered to the other line?

Its better than other head phones I've used but isn't ideal. If you're in a quiet office everything is great. They pick up less background noise then average but I had my wife use them while I called her on a walk and I could hear a lot of wind noise and she was a little "tin-ie"

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

This may have more to do with your network than the actual doorchime.

I can say that I have a -59dB signal at the front door and the delay in the live feed on my phone is less than a second.
